What does safety really mean when you're trapped in an abusive relationship? For forty years, Genesis Women's Shelter & Support has been answering this question through action, evolving from a seven-room emergency shelter into a comprehensive support system that recognizes both physical and emotional dimensions of safety. In this revealing conversation, Genesis CEO Jan Langbein and Chief Residential Officer Jordyn Lawson take us through the history of domestic violence services in America—a journey that began long before shelter doors opened, tracing back to women's suffrage and the fight against laws that once permitted husbands to beat their wives legally. They share how Genesis has continuously adapted to meet survivor needs, from adding transitional housing to legal services to innovative occupational therapy for traumatized children. The most dangerous misconception about domestic violence? That victims are safe once they leave. In reality, 75% of women murdered by partners are killed after separation. This stark reality explains why "just leaving" isn't simple, especially when abusers use isolation, financial control, and threats as weapons. Lawson expertly dismantles our understanding of abuse, explaining how controlling behaviors combined with any physical aggression represent the highest risk for homicide, while strangulation increases murder risk elevenfold.Perhaps most importantly, Langbein and Lawson offer practical guidance for everyone who suspects someone might be suffering. "Trust your gut," they urge, explaining that even when victims deny abuse initially, simply knowing someone cares enough to ask can become a lifeline. Whether you're concerned about someone you know or working in a position to help survivors, this episode provides the knowledge to recognize warning signs that media sensationalism often obscures.Ready to be part of the solution? Genesis offers 24/7 support at 214-946-HELP. Because as this episode reminds us: abuse won't stop until abusers stop abusing—but we can all help create pathways to safety.

Dallas' new children's hospital is getting another $100 million donation toward the construction of a $5 billion pediatric care facility, Children's Health and UT Southwestern announced Tuesday; While 1 in 4 women in the United States will experience some form of domestic violence in her lifetime, Langbein said that statistic increases to 1 in 3 in Texas. In Dallas, police statistics show there have been more than 6,600 intimate partner crimes in 2024. Nine were fatal; Armyworms — named for their tendency to march in troops — have hatched in throngs this fall across North and Central Texas, where they are wreaking havoc. Gardening groups on Facebook are rife with photos of the caterpillars and once-green lawns turned brown. Lawn care companies say they are receiving far more calls than usual, and agricultural organizations have published alerts; and, what makes a taco a great taco? Is it the tortilla? Is it the meat? Is it the salsa? Is it some mysterious secret ingredient? Surely, you have tried more than one taco in your life. Some have been good, some have not. We asked four North Texas Hispanic restaurateurs to help solve the riddle. These restaurateurs primarily deal in tacos, focusing in on what makes the dish a delicacy worth coming back for more. The book is called ‘Save the Last Bullet: Memoir of a boy soldier in Hitler's Army' and it vividly explores the use of propaganda and misinformation to give moral weight to an otherwise losing and abhorrent cause. It is also a story of lost innocence and despair in the face of circumstances beyond the control of fully grown adults, let alone children and teenagers. But it is also a story of determination, resilience, and hope, nurtured in the ruins of post-war Germany. Some of the topics we covered are: Nazi propaganda's deliberate targeting of children and youth Indoctrination techniques used in organisations like the Jung Volk and Hitler Jugend Structural changes made to history and national narrative to align with Nazi ideology Willi Langbein's personal motivation to share his story and experiences The brutal enforcement of collective punishment and forced submission to authority by the SS The significance behind Willi's first battle and the concept of ‘saving the last bullet' Willi's experiences during the physical end of the war and his treatment as a person under confinement How German soldiers and citizens perceived German atrocities during the war Germany's handling of collective guilt in the aftermath of World War II Transforming despair into hope in the face of post-war challenges Heidi's upbringing with an emotionally unavailable father and its impact on her life The positive reception of the book and its ability to resonate with young readers The reasons behind positive reviews from the Jewish community regarding the book Heidi's ongoing projects and plans for the future

Today I talked to Heidi Langbein-Allen about Save the Last Bullet: Memoir of a Boy Soldier in Hitler's Army (Pen & Sword Military, 2022). Willi Langbein was just thirteen when the Nazis took him away from his parents under the pretense of protecting him. Their real reason was to turn him into cannon-fodder for use against Hitler's enemies. Deployed to the collapsing Eastern Front in the last days of the war, Willi, now aged fourteen, and his schoolmates were ordered to stave off the relentless Russian advance. None were expected to return alive from the final battles of the Third Reich. Yet, against all odds, Willi does survive but his ordeal is far from over. He returns home to find everything he knows destroyed. Numb and confused, he is mandated to serve one year of forced farm labor. After his release, he gradually realizes that all he was taught to believe in was a lie and he sinks into depression. Eventually, thanks to his friendship with a kind British soldier, he begins to heal. It begins to dawn on him that he can play a part to ensure that the evil he witnessed is never repeated. Ultimately, he succeeds by earning the Medal of European Merit in 1979 for his contribution to the advancement of European democracy. Willi's graphic and moving story, told from a Nazi child soldier's perspective, is an inspiring memoir of lost innocence and despair, but also of determination and hope restored. Broke English teacher Penelope Schleeman is as surprised as anyone when her feminist novel American Mermaid becomes a best-seller. Lured by the promise of a big payday, she quits teaching and moves to L.A. to turn the novel into an action flick with the help of some studio hacks. But as she's pressured to change her main character from a fierce, androgynous eco-warrior to a teen sex object in a clamshell bra, strange things start to happen. Threats appear in the screenplay; siren calls lure Penelope's co-writers into danger. Is Penelope losing her mind, or has her mermaid come to life, enacting revenge for Hollywood's violations? American Mermaid follows a young woman braving the casual slights and cruel calculations of a ruthless industry town, where she discovers a beating heart in her own fiction, a mermaid who will fight to move between worlds without giving up her voice. Langbein told Tim Dower, Rose has been living in hole in the wall apartments for a long time. “She can make do with very little, and the brilliant thing about this book she said, mum I want to have a restricted pantry so that you don't go out and you buy all these ingredients, often they can be expensive and you use them once.” LISTEN ABOVE

Please remember that no episode of the MyoMinds podcast can be used as a replacement for medical advice and/or care. In today's episode, I speak with (soon to be Dr) Rachel Langbein, a PhD student and ex-endurance athlete whose first academic paper has recently been published. Rachel has spent the last 3 years researching the experiences of athletes who have gone through Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S). RED-S is a blanket term for the repercussions that come from low energy input in athletes/exercisers. We share a lot of areas of interest and go down many different paths. This was such a fun and interesting episode to record, and I hope you all enjoy it! Every nine seconds a woman is assaulted in America. It’s the kind of staggering statistic that shocks you into silence. It can make you feel powerless to help. When Jan Langbein first heard that statistic, it rocked her. She found an avenue to get involved with violence intervention and was eventually hired to run Genesis Women’s Shelter & Support in Dallas. Now, she’s worked to end violence against women and children for more than 20 years. God’s plan for her was bigger than she ever dreamed. On the podcast, she shares from the wealth of what she’s learned about: How to identify abuse in your own life and in others’ How to respond to a friend in an abusive relationship What we can all do to work toward ending and preventing violence, especially in faith communities “It's very hard being friends and family of someone who's being abused, because it's as if they are overcome by smoke. We see the house burning down, but they're tripping around in a house filled with smoke. So you say things like, you know what, when you are ready to talk about this, know that I'm going to be here for you. When you do feel like you ready for some resources, I'll have them for you.” Warning: There are some very hard things to hear in this episode and some potentially triggering things if you’ve been in an abusive relationship of any kind. I’m so thankful for Jan’s guidance and clarity on these hard topics. As believers, we’re called to press in to these uncomfortable places and be God’s hands and feet for women and children who are suffering. I pray you will listen with that in mind. “I think God hates divorce. I know he hates abuse even worse. I think this makes God cry that women are not allowed to live the fullest life. We can serve others, but that doesn't mean at the risk of our own bodies and souls and our children's lives.” What we chat about: How Jan got involved with violence intervention and eventual hired to run Genesis Women's Shelter & Support Every nine seconds, a woman is assaulted in this country and 1 in 3 women have experienced abuse The ways abuse affects the children in a marriage/relationship How to respond to a friend who may be in an abusive relationship The services offered at a shelter like Genesis can provide for multiple needs from housing to legal help to counseling Faith communities and other men can be a part of the solution calling out abuse and not sweeping it under the rug Fear is an indication of abuse and verbal and emotional abuse precedes physical abuse Helping a friend go through the stages of change in coming out of abuse Abusers have the power and control in the relationship and the person being abused has the responsibility to serve their abuser What to watch for in our kids for signs of abuse

Ekte ung veteran!
