In Season 10, Episode 14 of the Remarkable Retail podcast, co-hosts Steve Dennis and Michael LeBlanc deliver a jam-packed episode that blends sharp commentary on today's global retail turbulence with a thoughtful five-year retrospective on Steve's landmark retail strategy book, Remarkable Retail. The first half of the episode centers on the mounting global trade tensions, specifically the deepening tariff war between the U.S. and China. Steve breaks down the financial ripple effects of Trump's temporary tariff pause, from bond market volatility to persistent inflationary pressure. Despite a temporary reprieve, tariffs remain four times higher than pre-war levels, impacting major retail players like Nike, RH, and Lululemon. Smaller retailers are particularly vulnerable, lacking the scale and capital to weather uncertainty. The hosts also tackle other pressing news stories: consumer confidence plummeting, the fallout from the looming de minimis policy change affecting Chinese factory-direct models like Temu and Shein, and the ripple effect this may have on Canadian exporters to the U.S. They highlight luxury retail turbulence as Prada acquires Versace and Saks Global—parent company of Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus—faces vendor shipment cutoffs and empty shelves as seen in a Las Vegas store visti. A brief silver lining emerges in Dallas, where a threatened Neiman Marcus flagship gets a temporary lifeline. The second half of the episode is a deep dive into Remarkable Retail: How to Win & Keep Customers in the Age of Disruption, five years after its original release and four years since the COVID-updated second edition. Steve reflects on what inspired him to write the book—observing the collapse of retail's middle and the rise of bifurcation—and how the Eight Essentials framework continues to shape thinking in the industry. He shares which essentials remain relevant, which are now mere table stakes, and why “radical” as a term can be misinterpreted.Steve and Michael explore whether new tech, especially AI, can level the playing field—or merely amplify the advantages of already powerful retailers. Steve hints that if there were ever to be a third edition, it would put more emphasis on human-centered retail and leadership adaptability. The episode closes with reflections on the podcast's role as an evolving extension of the book, helping retail leaders stay agile and ahead in a rapidly shifting marketplace. Here is a 10% off code for the CommerceNext Growth Show exclusive to Remarkable Retail listeners: REMARKABLE. On this week's episode of the Glossy Podcast, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and international reporter Zofia Zwieglinska discuss two big news stories: the tariffs' last-minute delay and the impact on the fashion industry, and Prada's acquisition of Versace (16:44). Later in the episode, we're joined by Glossy editor-in-chief Jill Manoff for a roundtable discussion on the state of the department store (23:55). We cover everything from the graveyard of department stores that have closed — like Barneys and Henri Bendel — to the reasons European department stores have thrived while their American counterparts haven't. We also touch on Saks Fifth Avenue's notorious delay of vendor payments and brands and retailers' evolving relationship.
In the never-ending saga of American department stores, Saks Global's acquisition of the Neiman Marcus Group for $2.7 billion will go down in history as one of the most complicated—and consequential—plot points. Lauren and Saks Global C.E.O. Marc Metrick run through the list of complaints against the luxury department store super group, which includes Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman—from issues paying vendors to customer return snafus. And then, Marc outlines why he believes the deal was inevitable, and why it'll be better for the customer in the long run. Summary: You've heard it before: "The customer is always right." For many businesses, that's sound advice. But for premium brands, the road to success often takes a different route. Rather than reacting to every shift in demand, it's about staying rooted in a philosophy: delivering quality, staying authentic, and fostering relationships that stand the test of time. Today's guest has fully embraced this approach, leveraging his brand's strengths to set a new standard of excellence in the technical apparel market. Stuart Haselden has been the CEO of Arc'teryx since 2021 and brings over 20 years of global experience in retail and premium brands to the company, having worked in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia for brands such as Away Travel, Lululemon, J.Crew, and Saks Fifth Avenue. His career began in the United States Army where he served as a Cavalry Officer—a defining experience for him that has shaped his views on leadership. It was also the beginning of a lifelong love of mountain and alpine sports, as Stuart learned to ski in the Austrian Alps while stationed in Germany. In this episode, Stuart shares how Arc'teryx has expanded its direct-to-consumer model while preserving the brand's authenticity. He explains how a relentless focus on performance and innovation has fueled the company's growth and set it apart in the competitive technical apparel space. Stuart also talks about the leadership strategies that have guided Arc'teryx's evolution—and how they're shaping its future. My Aunt Lucy Jane Watson of 902 Quintard Avenue in Anniston, AL married Julian Saks, a less well known cousin of the Saks of Saks Fifth Avenue. He closed up his small store and moved to Houston, Texas where they raised my cousin Judith Ann, a brilliant painter, and she married Haskell Rosenthal and they too had one child Brian who is a brilliant guy who graduated Harvard and worked for years for Facebook and now he and his wife have a whole bunch of kids and Judith Ann moved up to New York state to be with them. For THOSE kids, I want you to always have a memory of your great grandmother’s voice. A REAL recording of her telling a part of her story - NOT AN AI REPLICA.
Consumer spending is the heart of the US economy—more specifically, spending by high-income, or luxury, consumers. These luxury consumers are optimistic about the economic landscape, and how and what they spend their money on reflects this attitude. But while not everyone can spend like a luxury consumer, can their attitudes provide economic insight for the rest of us? Just in time for the holiday shopping season, this episode we talk with Emily Essner, the Chief Marketing Officer for Saks Fifth Avenue. Saks is a well-established luxury department store chain, operating its brick-and-mortar stores and e-commerce platform as separate entities. Emily started at Saks Fifth Avenue in 2011, holding multiple roles before ultimately becoming the CMO for Saks, the standalone e-commerce platform of the brand. Prior to Saks, Emily was an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley, as well as a senior associate at McKinsey & Company. She holds an MBA from Columbia Business School, as well as a Bachelor's Degree from Mount Holyoke College. Science and design"Article on Thérèse MollAbout Jacqueline (Jackie)Jacqueline Casey was a pioneering graphic designer whose work defined the visual identity of MIT for over three decades. Born in 1927 in Quincy, Massachusetts, she studied fashion design and illustration at MassArt before finding her way into graphic design. In 1955, her lifelong friend Muriel Cooper recruited her to the MIT Office of Publications, where Casey absorbed the principles of Swiss modernism and gave them her own twist—infusing wit, visual metaphors, and bold typography into her work.As Director of MIT's Design Services Office, she led campus-wide design efforts, creating posters and materials for scientific conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events. Rerun: Winona Ryder was arrested for shoplifting from Saks Fifth Avenue, Beverly Hills on 12th December, 2001. Amongst the products she had stuffed into her hat was a Marc Jacobs sweater worth $760, and Frederic Fekkai hair adornments listed at $600. At first, the Oscar nominated actress claimed she had been under the impression that her assistant would pay for the items later. Then, she said she had stolen them as research for a forthcoming role. But in court, the security guards said they'd seen Ryder clipping the tags off some items with scissors. She got 500 hours of Community Service, and her career was derailed for a decade. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider whether Saks leveraged the opportunity for publicity purposes; examine the strange composition of the jury who decided Ryder's fate; and ask if her appearance in a ‘Free Winona' t-shirt was indulgent or amusing… Further Reading: • ‘A grass roots campaign to "free" Winona Ryder helps make $15 T-shirt LA's hottest style statement' (British Vogue, 2002): https://www.vogue.co.uk/article/free-winona • ‘Ryder possessed 8 drugs during arrest, memo says' (Chicago Tribune, 2002): https://www.chicagotribune.com/news/ct-xpm-2002-12-04-0212040374-story.html Winona Ryder Convicted of 2 Counts in Shoplifting - The New York Times (nytimes.com) • ‘America's Dumbest Criminals' (Channel 5, 2002): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unyKRYb7WPo ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' About Rhonda Parker Rhonda Parker Taylor wanted to write a book to prove to herself that she could. For many, like Parker Taylor, writing is a difficult task. Growing up, she wasn't a good student in English, reading or writing. She struggled with McGuffey Readers. And the phonetic concepts escaped her as a child. But she was still drawn to books, mostly encyclopedias, where she could read about the world, daring young women and journeys away from her small hometown of Noblesville. So, writing became about telling a story that was within her. https://rhondaparkertaylor.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/rhondaparkertaylor/ --------------------------------- About Marie Birtel I published my book in German and English beginning of 2024 about narcissistic abuse in family-systems. The name of my heroine is Emma. In fact it is my story: Emma grows up in the illusion of a perfect family, shielded by external prosperity and a façade of good upbringing. However, behind closed doors, a toxic family system thrives - led by a covertly narcissistic mother and a narcissistic-sadistic father. In "I love you when...", you embark on a captivating journey through the seemingly idyllic family's own world, unraveling the intricacies of manipulative tactics woven over decades. https://mariebirtel.com/ https://www.instagram.com/i_am_maryc/ ---------------------------------- About David Doss David Doss is the visionary Founder of CKC.Fund, an asset management consulting firm that bridges the gap between traditional finance and emerging technologies like blockchain. He also discussed the difference between running a fashion brand in the U.S. versus Europe, the challenges of heading up both the business and the creative side of his company, and the scenario in which he'd take on an investor.

Calling all brick-and mortar business owners! If you want to get more eyes on your business and more people IN your location, this coaching session has your name written all over it! As a young girl, Heather Davis had always loved baking sweet treats, and although she initially took a traditional career path to become a teacher, she continued to develop her craft as a baker. Though Heather would often bring her fresh baked goods to her school just for the love of baking, her fellow teachers started placing orders, and encouraged her to sell them! So in 2011 she made the life-changing decision to launch a bakery, Chic Sweets Fine Desserts. Since 2014, Chic Sweets Bakery has partnered with the finest coffee shops and cafes including Nordstrom Department Stores, Saks Fifth Avenue, Rice University and Aramark Corporation. A little over a year ago, Heather opened her first brick-and-mortar location in a suburb north of Houston, Texas, and that's exactly what we're talking about today! Although I've never owned a brick-and-mortar myself, I have a LOT of tricks up my sleeve for Heather to get more organic and paid customers, and I just know you'll benefit from them, too.
