Today's investment world has been called a “factor zoo,” but value was arguably the first. With name-dropping candidates from Graham-Dodd to Fama-French to Warren Buffett, the original style, termed an investment “superfood,” earned that label by outpacing growth over the better part of a century. The tide turned for value around the time of the global financial crisis (GFC), with its popularity fading as growth soared. Despite the slump, a lot is happening in the “other half.” At the index level—and more so among industry leaders—dozens of strong growth and market-share stories have largely flown under the radar, judging from asset flows and multiples. It might be time to change that. US banks continue to garner headlines—almost a year removed from the heart of the regional crisis, and with the looming end of the Fed's program to help stop the bleeding. Commercial real estate's challenges remain—as does the pressure on banks, which delivered a healthy share of capital. But a bigger story has been afoot: the incredible shrinking US bank sector. Its numbers, which have withered for decades, are the lowest in over a century. The current environment should accelerate that decline, raising multi-trillion-dollar questions: Why? What does it mean for consumers and investors? Listen to the latest episode as we dig in. Description: Housing is the biggest asset many of us will ever invest in, and COVID-19 and its related policy decisions caused mass disruption. As mortgage rates plummeted to record lows, refinancing exploded and home values surged. When rates then rebounded to multi-decade highs, housing inventory evaporated. Many of the big storylines in residential real estate today and tomorrow, however, are actually rooted in the global financial crisis (GFC), translating into diverse investment implications. Most advisors know that when markets are volatile they will be having challenging conversations with emotional clients. Very few advisors know how important it is to initiate conversations and engage clients about possible volatility before they get upset.
The common wisdom may say that the impasse will be worked out because the cost of failure is too steep, but at the center of the debate two key questions always emerge as markets monitor the give-and-take: How much debt is actually too much? And what determines when a country reaches that point? In the latest installment of the AB Disruptor Series, Unpacking the Debt Problem, Rick Brink, AB's Chief Market Strategist, and an expert panel will start with a deep dive into the US debt-ceiling discussions and then look more broadly at the debt question both here and around the world. Research from behavioral finance has revealed a stunning number of decision-making vulnerabilities that make it challenging for investors to successfully navigate capital markets. Hundreds of these heuristics have been discovered over the past few decades, and many are common behaviors that advisors see in clients every day. But advisors are people, too, and they are just as vulnerable to decision-making biases as clients. As the saying goes, “Failure to plan is a plan to fail.” And with global markets down significantly, many financial advisors are unprepared for the declining revenues that come from a reduced asset base or unexpected client attrition. However, an advisor “Go Bag”—specific, tangible resources to help your practice and clients—can make a big difference in this environment.
