When Halloween “Hyper” Meets ADHD: What a New Study Reveals About Overdiagnosis

Every October 31st, kids go wild - costumes, sugar, excitement - but what if that same energy is quietly shaping ADHD diagnoses? In this Doctor’s Desk episode, Justin and Kylie unpack a fascinating new study showing a 14% spike in ADHD diagnoses on Halloween day. They explore what this says about subjectivity in diagnosis, the risks of overlabelling kids, and how our environments - not just our children - might need rethinking. KEY POINTS: A new Harvard study found ADHD diagnoses rise 14% on Halloween compared to surrounding days. ADHD remains a subjective diagnosis — there’s no blood test or scan to confirm it. Why environment and maturity often explain behaviours mistaken for “disorder.” The real risks of misdiagnosis — medication, labelling, and self-perception. Why it’s time to look at what’s happening around kids, not just within them. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “There isn’t anything wrong with her — she just doesn’t fit the mould of what we consider normal.” RESOURCES MENTIONED: Study: Halloween, ADHD, and Subjectivity in Medical Diagnosis (National Bureau of Economic Research) Searching for Normal by Sami Timimi The Parenting Revolution by Justin Coulson ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS: Before seeking a diagnosis, consider context — sleep, stress, diet, and school environment. Avoid rushing to label; focus on understanding and supporting your child’s unique needs. Ask questions — about treatment pathways, environment, and alternative perspectives. Create calmer spaces where kids can regulate, play, and thrive. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

'Tis the season for sequel films here on the Couch, and coming off of our discussion of Moana not too long ago, we've got the perfect perspective on its totally-not-planned-to-be-a-TV-series-originally-but-was-then-haphazardly-converted-into-a-feature-film sequel, 2024's Moana 2. It's a tall ask to follow up a film like Moana and while the gang agrees that the story and narrative feel pretty fresh as far as sequels go, there are a few...other issues...with this film that do elicit feelings of "soulless cash grab" in certain moments. A great metric on judging a film's writing quality is how many mini-Writer's Desk segments we can cram into the episode to see just how much more this film could have been compared to what we got. Content warning: SPOILERS, strong language.

This week on the Sinica Podcast, I speak with Jonathan Czin, the Michael H. Armacost Chair in Foreign Policy Studies and a fellow at the Brookings Institution's John L. Thornton China Center. His new essay in Foreign Affairs, “China Against China: Xi Jinping Confronts the Downsides of Success,” challenges the dominant Western narrative of Xi Jinping as either Mao reincarnate or a brittle autocrat presiding over imminent collapse. Instead, Czin argues that Xi's most illiberal reforms can be understood as attempts to cure the pathologies of China's own success. We discuss his framing of Xi's “Counterreformation,” how it helps explain China's current political direction, and what it reveals about our own analytical blind spots in the West.7:15 – Xi's “reformation” and Carl Minzner's “end of reform and opening”12:18 – Corruption, decentralization, and the “lost decade” under Hu and Wen20:12 – Defining “resilience” and what Xi means by “eating bitterness”29:45 – The “downsides of success”: property, corruption, and governance contradictions45:30 – Counter-reformation vs. counterrevolution: what Xi wants to preserve and discard54:20 – The myth of yes-men: triangulation and feedback in Xi's leadership style1:07:07 – Cognitive empathy and why most U.S. analysis of Xi falls short1:15:35 – Systems that can't course-correct: comparing the U.S. and China1:22:05 – Cognitive empathy, ideology, and the problem of American exceptionalismPaying it forward:Jonathan: Allie Mathias and Dinny McMahonRecommendations:Jonathan: The Thirty Years War by C.V. Bongani Bingwa speaks to Nokukhanya Mntambo about South Africa’s historic G20 Presidency and what it means for the continent’s future. As the only African nation in the G20 since its founding in 1999, South Africa now holds a critical platform to champion Africa’s priorities on a global scale. With Trade and Investment high on the agenda, corporate backing from FirstRand — through RMB and FNB as platinum sponsors — is helping to drive this mission forward. FirstRand CEO Mary Vilakazi is also serving as co-chair of the influential B20 Task Force, which places South Africa in a strategic position to attract much-needed foreign direct investment. It’s a moment of opportunity, not just for the country, but for Africa as a whole. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station. Bongani Bingwa speaks to political analyst and academic Asanda Ngoasheng about a whirlwind week in South African politics. From the Director-General of Social Development facing dismissal over alleged dishonesty, to the ANC in a scramble to unfreeze its bank accounts following a dramatic court order, the headlines have been nothing short of explosive. Tensions are also rising within the police service, with a public fallout between Lieutenant-General Sibiya and Provincial Commissioner Mkhwanazi raising serious questions about leadership and internal divisions. Corruption, accountability, and political fallout are dominating the agenda — and Ngoasheng helps us unpack what all of this means for the future of governance in the country. 702 Breakfast with Bongani Bingwa is broadcast on 702, a Johannesburg based talk radio station.
