Exploring the Intersection of Autism and Gender Diversity

Send us Fan MailAutism and gender diversity often seem to show up together in our kids. There's been some really interesting research exploring this correlation, finding that people with autism are more likely than the general population to identify as transgender or gender diverse. That doesn't mean one causes the other, but it does mean that for many of us, learning how to support a trans child has also meant learning about neurodivergence in entirely new ways. What we've discovered along the way is that so many of the things that help autistic kids thrive are the very same things that help us raise queer kids, too. This week In the Den, Sara chats with coach, speaker, and author of Grandparenting on the Spectrum: A Journey from Both Sides of the Desk, Jennifer Kaufman. Jennifer brings a unique perspective, not only as a professional who has spent years supporting families, but also as a grandparent whose own family has walked this journey. Her book is written for grandparents, but honestly, the wisdom reaches far beyond that audience. Whether your child is autistic, ADHD, otherwise neurodivergent, queer, transgender, or some beautiful combination of those identities, we think you'll hear themes that resonate deeply. This conversation is full of practical wisdom, compassion, and reminders that our kids don't need us to fix them—they need us to know them, trust them, and love them for exactly who they are.Special Guest: Jennifer KaufmanJennifer Kaufman brings a perspective on autism that few people can claim. As a school principal with over a decade serving students with autism and the grandmother of a child with autism, she lives this world from both sides. She is the author of Grandparenting on the Spectrum: A Journey from Both Sides of the Desk and speaks to grandparents, families, and first responders about navigating the autism journey with confidence and compassion. She is also the founder of First Response Autism, where she trains police, first responders, and college campus security teams on ways in which to best support autistic and neurodivergent individuals in their communities.Links from the Show:Grandparenting on the Spectrum bookGrandparenting on the Spectrum WebsiteGrandparenting on the Spectrum FBFirst Response Autism WebsiteGrandparenting on the Spectrum IGJoin Mama Dragons todayGo deeper with Empowered Parent Learning - Mama Dragons' on-demand library of video courses and webinars for parents of LGBTQ+ kids. Then, in a move straight out of the "let's have the robots write the laws" file, members of Congress are apparently using ChatGPT and Claude to draft legislation so badly that House lawyers have to clean up the mess, and some staffers aren't even learning the issues their bills are supposed to address. David Fishman spent eight years in the Coast Guard, started on a temp desk, and launched Sparrow Company in 2009 when the alternative was going broke. Thirty years into the business, his desk regularly produces $1.5 million a year, his longest client relationship has lasted three decades, and he recently ran a streak where ten straight presentations turned into ten placements. First candidate presented, first candidate hired, ten times in a row. In this conversation, David breaks down how he built all of it without a college degree and why the chip on his shoulder became his biggest advantage. He shares the intake questions that shape every search, explains why he reads a resume like a photograph, and reveals how patience let him win back clients he lost three or four times by simply outliving the tenure of the HR leaders who cut him. He also unpacks why he stopped tracking dollars and started tracking deals, how the wave cycles of recruiting punish anyone who gets comfortable, and why the first three days of your week decide whether you have any momentum left by the next Monday. You will also hear how David expanded into the temp business by recruiting his own business partner, what it means to have his son and daughter working inside the company, and why at 58 he still wakes up feeling like something is chasing him. What You'll Learn: The resume-reading method behind a 10-for-10 presentation-to-placement streakThe intake questions that tell you if the wind is at your back or you are digging through mudHow to win back a lost client by outliving the tenure of the person who cut youWhy tracking deals instead of dollars protects you from the summer complacency trapThe Monday-through-Wednesday work rhythm that keeps your momentum aliveHow to turn a no-degree chip on your shoulder into a 30-year career Sign up for The Recruiting Agents Workshop (Aug 25-26):

Sal Ferreira is seventy-six and the last person alive who remembers the copper — and he knows the frequency by name. The linemen called it the ghost line: the old mutual-aid channel between two small stations that used to cover each other's worst nights, so neither one ever had to be alone in it. Both stations are being torn out in the same cutover. Same contractor, same week. And in the gap between one disconnection and the next, the copper is still live. He isn't a ghost.

Get in Touch! Send us a message. It's 6:05 PM. You're still at your desk. The showroom closed over an hour ago. Your team left. You have not left. You're not exactly working. Twelve browser tabs open. An email started this morning, minimized at the bottom of the screen. A text you've read three times and haven't answered. A sticky note from last week you can no longer fully decipher.Every time you try to stand up, something else surfaces. Did you confirm the Garcias' install date? What was that vendor thing you were going to follow up on? You had a thought in the car this morning — what was it?So you sit there. You're not stuck because you're inefficient. You're stuck because your brain doesn't trust the system to hold what's still open. There's no place where the unfinished things live — so your brain is holding all of them, at once, on an internal loop. Because if it stops, something gets dropped. In this episode, we walk through the end-of-day brain dump: the three-minute recording that gives your brain permission to stop holding everything — and gets you out the door. What you'll hear:Why you can't leave your desk even when you're not working — and what's actually keeping you thereThe three-minute recording that moves open loops out of your head and into a systemHow the brain dump compounds over time into a pattern map of what's actually weighing on your business

We’ve told kids for years that effort changes everything. But the biggest review of growth mindset research in decades just found the results are tiny… sometimes nothing at all. So should parents and teachers stop talking about “not yet”? In this Doctor’s Desk episode, Justin and Kylie unpack what the science really says, why the data might be missing the magic, and the simple belief that still changes lives for many children. KEY POINTS A major new review analysed 24 gold-standard studies on growth mindset interventions. The strongest research found very small or zero academic improvement. Real classrooms and real families are far more complex than controlled trials. No study shows growth mindset causes harm. Language, belief, and persistence still influence motivation for many kids. We should be careful about promises — but not abandon hope. QUOTE OF THE EPISODE “I don’t want to be the adult who looks at a child and says, ‘You just can’t.’” RESOURCES MENTIONED Gazmuri, C. (2025). Growth mindset interventions and academic achievement. Review of Education. ACTION STEPS FOR PARENTS Swap limits for possibility: invite effort and exploration. Focus on helping your child stay in the uncomfortable learning zone. Offer support after they’ve tried, not before. Remember: neutral evidence is not negative evidence.
