Want to know what kind of reader you are? TAKE OUR QUIZ: https://www.currentlyreadingpodcast.com/quiz   In this episode of Currently Reading, Meredith and Kaytee are back together to discuss their bookish moments of the week, and then tell you about three current reads each. For this week's episode, our current reads vary from ones we felt bland about, to books that we loved. For our Deep Dive, we answer a listener question about how to utilize the library well. We'll always end with our Before We Go segment, where we shout out a Bookish Friend of the week or talk about a specific small piece of our reading lives that we want to share with you. Today, Meredith shouts out a bookish friend who shared a neat graphic and Kaytee brings something she read about because Meredith read and brought it to the show. This daily comedy show starts with America's latest accidental export: ranch dressing. Apparently visitors from overseas are treating Hidden Valley like it's some kind of forbidden miracle sauce, which naturally leads to TSA reminding everyone that ranch is, in fact, a liquid. Yes, this is apparently the timeline we live in.From there the gang admits way more than they probably should about their eating habits. Secret snack stashes. Bathroom snacks. Car snacks. Desk snacks. Entire bags of Doritos disappearing in one sitting. Pringles eaten like communion wafers. If you've ever looked at a family-size bag and thought, "Challenge accepted," congratulations—you'll fit right in.Things only get weirder when the conversation shifts into early-bird dinners, GERD, gout, Tums lingerie, and the universal struggle of realizing adulthood slowly turns everyone into someone's grandparents. Turns out eating at 4:30 isn't a personality flaw... it's just scheduling. The Food News somehow manages to get even more ridiculous as Crumbl's insanely sugary dirty sodas make an appearance, along with customers who somehow think adding nearly 150 grams of sugar to ten cans of Coke is a balanced lifestyle choice. We are both impressed and deeply concerned. Then Rafe delivers another unforgettable edition of the E-Memoriam, saying goodbye to catalytic converters after thieves strike local station vehicles, roasting the show's own narcissism, reliving the heartbreaking Little League roster disaster that crushed one eight-year-old's dreams, calling out "24/7" HVAC companies that apparently define time differently than the rest of us, and finally honoring the Kentucky Fried Chicken employee who tackled an armed robbery suspect like he was auditioning for the next Jason Statham movie.Naturally, the story escalates into a completely fake blockbuster trailer starring Jason Statham as Colonel Sanders and Marvin Diesel—the practical cousin nobody asked for but everyone somehow needed. It's another completely unhinged daily comedy show packed with weird news, sarcastic debates, food obsessions, pop culture nonsense, and the kind of conversations that somehow make perfect sense before 10 a.m.If you love hilarious stories, ridiculous hypotheticals, celebrity commentary, strange internet trends, and friends roasting each other nonstop, you've found your people. Thanks for listening to another daily comedy show from The Rizzuto Show. Kelly Monahan, Co-Founder of Beyond the Desk, joins host Sima Vasa to challenge the assumption that AI is responsible for today’s workforce crisis. Kelly argues that shareholder-primacy doctrine, adopted wholesale since a 1970s Milton Friedman op-ed, created the fragile leadership culture now cracking under macroeconomic pressure — and that AI is being used as a convenient scapegoat. Kelly also covers Gen Z’s rejection of corporate theatrics, the three foundational skills for AI literacy and why the future of work is likely to be smaller, more distributed and harder to navigate without domain expertise. KEY TAKEAWAYS 00:00  Introduction. 03:50  A single 1970s op-ed reshaped business philosophy and created today’s command-and-control culture. 07:45  Predicting engagement scores from one boardroom question about trust reveals deep leadership gaps. 12:30  AI is being used as cover for bad strategy, not as the primary cause of workforce disruption. 17:20  Only 30% of Gen Z aspires to leadership, signaling a values crisis for corporate America. 23:00  The PLOT framework helps leaders share power, listen, own outcomes and extend trust to Gen Z. 27:30  Domain expertise, not tool familiarity, is the true first pillar of AI literacy in any organization. The Resolute Desk is arguably the most famous desk in the world. It is certainly the most iconic of the six desks that have been used by sitting presidents in the Oval Office. Stewart McLaurin, President of the White House Historical Association, traveled to England in order to learn more about the history of the desk which was gifted in 1880 to President Rutherford B. Hayes from Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom as a sign of goodwill between the two nations. Though it was used throughout the White House since President Hayes, the desk was first used in the Oval Office by President John F. Kennedy. It has also been used by Presidents Carter, Reagan, and every president since George W. Bush. The episode begins at The Historic Dockyard Chatham where the British ship HMS Resolute was docked before it was decommissioned, broken apart, and its timbers turned into various items - including a desk for the U.S. President. Almost 30 years earlier, the HMS Resolute had been part of an Arctic rescue expedition in search of a British explorer who went missing on the hunt for the Northwest Passage to Asia. The rescue expedition got stuck in the ice, and after a few seasons, the crew abandoned the ships. It was an American vessel that eventually found the Resolute which had broken free of the ice. The U.S. Congress appropriated the funds to refit the ship and return it to England's Queen Victoria.  Stewart and Paul Barnard, Deputy Chief Executive at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, tour the dockyard and climb aboard a Victorian naval sloop called the HMS Gannet, a similar ship that was introduced into service around the time the Resolute was decommissioned. As we'll learn, the Gannet also has its own tie-in to White House history. Then they visit the space that was once the shop where the Resolute Desk was built. Stewart and Paul are joined by Paul Wright, Interpretation Officer at The Historic Dockyard Chatham, who talks about the skills and craftsmanship of the people who once worked in the yard.  Then Stewart heads to the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London and meets with Senior Curator, Dr. Claire Warrior, for a special look at several items not on public display, including an actual piece of wood from the HMS Resolute, as well as proposed designs for the famous desk. During his State Visit in April 2026, King Charles III gifted President Donald Trump a framed, high-quality reproduction of these same plans.  Join us for this fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the most recognizable desk in the world.

Between hosting an 11-kid birthday party with a piñata, Erin's washing machine dying right when she needs to wash couch cushion covers, and a slammed hand in a truck door, the stress is very real. We crack open a full sugar Red Bull and a Spindrift to try and get through it. We kick things off with some "anti-motivation" for your hot summer runs: when the wind and heat are getting you down, just remember that you could be enduring 36 hours of labor or passing a kidney stone. We also vent our absolute rage over our posture after seeing photos of our rounded shoulders in the new Team Struggle Run shirts. Desk life and side-sleeping are clearly taking a toll, but we do have some positive fitness updates, including Erin mastering the dead hang and building sturdy wiffle ball strength through her pull up training. Next, we go on a massive rant about app registration requirements. We are completely sick of immediate pop-ups, cookie preferences, and forced account creations. Honestly, it would be easier to just hand-deliver our passwords, blood tests, and retinas straight to Jeff Bezos so he can just have all our data once and for all. We celebrate our former podcast guest and track-and-field Paralympian, Beatriz Hatz, who is making history as the first differently-abled contestant on Love Island. We also touch on the crazy drama of a local police officer quitting his force to join the same show. We then dive into a dedicated FIFA segment, covering three wild soccer stories. First, there's an alleged ban on outside water bottles that will force fans to buy overpriced water in the blistering heat. (I think FIFA recently repealed this, but we recorded before that.) We also discuss Heineken's clever "solo fan" commercial featuring Xavi, which leads us to admit we would absolutely fail to recognize a celebrity like Bad Bunny if he sat next to us undercover. To wrap up the sports talk, we share a wholesome video breakdown of the Japanese national team arriving in Nuevo Leon, Mexico, in matching suits to receive traditional rancher hats from the governor. Moving into pop culture, we give a behind-the-scenes look at how TMZ actually gets the scoop, from keeping producers stationed daily at hospitals and courthouses to instantly calling everyone from mailmen to neighbors when news breaks. We also issue a quick reality TV PSA regarding Amanda Batula from Summer House: beta blockers are for lowering your heart rate during fight-or-flight moments, not for zoning out like benzos. For our "No Bad, No Sad" segment, we review arguably our best viral video yet, a corporate dad letting his inner DJ out on the turntables at a Guitar Center with his daughter. "Dead AI Startups Keep Landing On My Desk!" | CEO @ Clari + Salesloft, Steve Cox

Topline

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 14, 2026 67:11

Steve Cox, CEO of Clari + Salesloft, joins Sam Jacobs and Asad Zaman to argue that SaaS is far from dead. Steve took the CEO role in December 2025 to merge two of the biggest brands in go-to-market tech into what he calls the world's first predictive revenue system. Topics include the narrative war pushing investors to bet against SaaS-era companies, his one non-negotiable hiring trait, and how to merge two former rivals without one culture eating the other. Plus, a Quiz Pro Quo on go-to-market headcount across US tech and a Bulls and Bears round to close. Key Takeaways: - The AI-native startup boom is already hitting a retention wall, and Steve is watching it arrive deal by deal. As Steve Cox, CEO of Clari plus Salesloft, put it: "the amount of AI native companies that come across my desk now that... are up for sale, you know, they've run out of funding... they grew to 2, 3, 4 million of ARR pretty quickly and then struggled with retention." His read is that everyone knows AI exists now, so driving real adoption "has become more important than ever." - Steve reframes the AI hype cycle as the next layer of infrastructure the industry will absorb, the way it absorbed cloud and big data. As he points out, "how many of us are gonna be talking about AI 3 years from now, 4 years from now?... when was the last time someone mentioned the cloud or Internet of Things or big data?" He expects AI to "layer into everything that we do," which is why he is embedding it into existing revenue workflows rather than fundamentally rebranding the company around it. - The one non-negotiable trait Steve screens for in every executive hire is low ego, because he believes "high ego kills innovation and kills speed." He pairs that with blunt clarity for a merged workforce, telling his first all-hands "It's okay to not to want to be here," so the people who do not buy into the combined company can find the exit fast instead of dragging it down. - Sam Jacobs, CEO of Pavilion, argues a profitable SaaS business with strong retention should ignore where the market trades today. "In the short term, markets are voting machines. In the long term, markets are weighing machines," he said, adding that if you are profitable with good retention, "your customers are voting for you on behalf of the market." The job, in his framing, is to be right long enough that you never have to tap the capital markets at the wrong moment. CannCon and Zak Paine open the Monday show with California's election count turning into a full display of the machine in operation. Spencer Pratt held a lead of over 20,000 votes on election night in the LA mayoral race, then batch after batch of late mail-in ballots arrived giving Nithya Raman 40% while she had been polling at 23% all week. The statistical probability of that shift is compared to finding a single grain of sand on Earth twelve separate times. CannCon maps out California's full fraud architecture: Smartmatic VSAP machines, motor voter automatic registration of noncitizens, gym memberships as valid voter ID, ballot harvesting with no limit on collectors, and mail-in ballots sent to every registered voter with a seven-day post-election acceptance window. The DOJ has been fighting California in the Ninth Circuit for over a year to audit the voter rolls. Trump calls it a rigged election live in his NBC interview with Kristen Welker, tells her she is either crooked or stupid, and walks out. CannCon plays the full exchange and makes the murder witness analogy: evidence dismissed on procedural grounds is still evidence. Zak and CannCon close by discussing the Resolute Desk bugging theory, noting Trump removed it on day one of his second term.

Is your home office working for you — or against you? In this solo episode, Janet Taylor, your Life Organizer, walks you through seven practical steps to take back control of your workspace, clear the clutter, and create an office environment that actually supports howyou work and live. Whether you work from home full-time, manage household paperwork, or just need a space that helps you think clearly — this episode is for you. In this episode Janet covers: Step 1: Create a retention schedule — talk to your tax professional, attorney, or financial advisor to know exactly what you need to keep and what you can finally let go. Step 2: Start with the outer areas — the corners, floor space, bookshelves, and ledges you haven't touched in months. Step 3: Clear off your desk — everything comes off, then only the daily essentials go back. Step 4: Clear the bookcase — are those books and periodicals still relevant to your life today? Step 5: Purge the filing cabinet — it should be functional, not a paper graveyard. Step 6: Find a shredding event or schedule time to shred — protect your personal information and free up space. Step 7: Repeat seasonally or quarterly — maintenance is so much easier than starting from scratch. Janet also shares this week's Organizing with Janet story — a virtual client session that started with three-and-a-half inch floppy disks and outdated binders, and ended with a fully functional, efficient workspace. Taylor's Tip Time: Set a 15-minute timer and tackle just one area of your home office this week. That is all it takes to get started. TossItTuesday: Janet is letting go of greeting cards she no longer feels attached to — some going back more than 30 years. Quote of the week: "A clear desk is not just about organization. It is a declaration that you are in control of your space, your time, and your focus."   Clear the Clutter. Claim Your Power. It starts with your desk.   Subscribe, leave a review, and share this episode with someone whose desk needs a little love.   Connect with Janet M. The Learning Leader Show with Ryan Hawk www.LearningLeader.com New Book -- The Price of Becoming www.LearningLeader.com/Becoming Austin Kleon is the NYT bestselling author of Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work, and Keep Going. He's a writer who draws, a former librarian, and one of the most original thinkers on creativity working today. His new book is Don't Call It Art: 10 Ways to Create Like a Kid Again. This is brought to you by Insight Global. If you need to hire one person, hire a team of people, or transform your business through Talent or Technical Services, Insight Global's team of 30,000 people around the world has the hustle and grit to deliver. Key Learnings   Stay light. Bill Murray told ballplayers that if you stay light, loose, and relaxed, you can play at the highest level. Same with acting, writing, anything. Austin keeps a photo of Bill in his studio as a reminder. Play is the work. A lot of Austin's best work requires a sense of play. It's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Go to the analog desk first. Austin has a digital desk and an analog desk. Nothing electronic is allowed at the analog desk. He starts there with nothing and sees what comes. Most people never give themselves the time, space, and materials to make something of what's swirling inside them.  People want to watch someone who is activated. "People will pay every night to show up and see somebody believe in themselves." (Kim Gordon, Sonic Youth) The market for something to believe in is infinite. (Hugh MacLeod) The world is full of people just doing their thing. They're hungry to see someone on fire for something. The writer's job: take what everyone is thinking and put it into words. "You gave me the words" is the highest compliment a reader can give. Effortless is earned. People say the Friday newsletter looks easy. Austin's reply: Do it every Friday for 13 years, then call me. A place to put things makes you notice more. Thoreau took morning walks knowing he'd write later, so he paid closer attention. Carry a camera, and you start seeing shots everywhere. Live for the living, not for the writing. There's a tension between living your life and documenting it. Don't lose yourself to the feed. Your attention is the most valuable thing you have. Everyone wants to take it. The real challenge of modern life is making sure you're the one who decides where it goes. The best teachers are perpetual students. You realize what you know and don't know only when you try to teach it. Toggle between knowing and not knowing. The moment you think you know what you're doing, the work gets stale. You start running on routine instead of need. To be an amateur is to be a lover. The French root means "lover of." An amateur does it out of love, not material reward. Every great CEO should be put in a room with a four-year-old. They'd both learn something. Kids knock the pompous certainty right out of you. "I don't know. How do you think we should figure it out?" Austin's kids taught him it's less important to know everything than to know how to find out. The leader isn't the one who speaks while everyone listens. The leader listens, asks questions, stays curious, and wonders how everyone is doing. Look for who's having fun, not who's successful. Fun is underrated. Serious people have a serious time. Do it with lightness and it's contagious. "A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play." (Lawrence Pearsall Jacks) He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he's doing and leaves others to decide whether he's working or playing. To himself, he always appears to be doing both. Ask "What does the universe want to show me today?" A useful fiction. Tell yourself the world is trying to send you messages and suddenly you see a hundred of them. Have the toy before you know what you'll do with it. Austin buys typewriters, then asks what to make. Get the bicycle first. In six months you'll know what kind you actually want. Steal an idea someone only did once and turn it into a whole thing. Austin saw a single typewriter interview, made it a series, and has done more than 20. Put the human hand in the work. Austin decided 20 years ago to make it obvious a human made his stuff. In the age of AI, it stands out more than ever. People want the imperfection. Writing is thinking. People think you gather your ideas then write them down. The act of writing is the act of figuring out what you actually think. That's the hard part. Differentiate yourself by reading a book outside your field. Swim a little further out than everyone else and you find new water. Focus on what you can control. A writer controls only what's between the covers. Did you do a good job? Were you clear? Were you helpful? The rest isn't up to you. Austin's champagne moment a year from now: his kids flourishing. The older he gets, the less the books mean and the more his family does. Reflection Questions Where is your analog desk? Do you have a space with no screens where you go to make something of what's swirling inside you? Are you activated? When people watch you work, do they see someone on fire for it, or someone just going through the motions? What's one idea from outside your field you could steal this week? Where could you swim a little further out and find new water?
