CW pretend violence, manipulation, body horror, forgetting, mention of suicidal ideation Geath and Arren and Way pleaded, and promised, and declared their love and innocence, but all in vain. No word the trio spoke would sway Celadore. She saw dishonesty in every tear, betrayal on each beloved face, and further treason with every moment her three subjects stood united. And she was fierce, and cold-hearted, and treacherous like the sea, and so in her rage and grief she did what the sea does. Lightning smote the palace. High winds screamed. The waves crashed and roared. In one terrible moment, storm and sea tore Giant’s Dock from the living rock of Fairyland and dragged it down ten fathoms deep to drown where even mermaids fear to swim. And no-one has seen or heard from the Queen, these countless summers and winters since. Beside the shore of the Sea of Sunken Sorrows, the Circus Under the Hills plans a performance with higher stakes than any they’ve ever known. Esmerelda Cortada steps into the ring to lead, Fimbly Dun puts on a play, and Tingley Grimbles gets some things off their chest. And then, backstage, our circus ends their tour and says farewell... CW strangulation, mention of injuries, burn scars, drowning. The years passed. The river of time flowed by, as it must—summer to autumn, autumn to winter. The weather grew fierce. The people’s hearts grew cold. The sea grew treacherous. And in turn, Queen Celadore grew fierce, and cold-hearted, and treacherous. The friendship between her beloved subjects—the wizard Geath, Prince Arren, and her consort Way—had once brought her great joy and contentment. Now the smiles and embraces and soft laughter between them filled her with dread, and fear, and jealousy. And in the bitter depths of one terrible midwinter, she resolved to confront them for their treachery... As the toll of being trapped Between Worlds shows itself, Esmerelda asks for some mortal advice, Fimbly Dun goes looking for answers, and Tingly Grimbles has some choice words for a distant monarch. CW graphic descriptions of injuries, blood, disassociation, flashbacks, dead bodies, drowning, burn scars. Once upon a time, many a summer and winter ago, there was in Fairyland a kingdom called Giant’s Dock. And the weather there was gentle, and the fisherfolk there were happy, and the seas all around were kind, for they all loved their ruler, the giantess Queen Celadore. And Celadore was gentle, and happy, and kind, for she had in her court three subjects who she dearly loved: Geath, the wizard; Prince Arren, the hero; and her handsome selkie consort, Way. Once upon a time, many a summer and winter ago. Before the Giant’s Dock was drowned, and lost between worlds… Slipped between worlds in their desperate flight from Mortal London, the Circus Under the Hills find themselves bedraggled and gasping on the shore beside the Sea of Sunken Sorrows. Esmerelda goes exploring, Fimbly Dun feels rather perturbed, and Grimbles lends a hand. CW discussion of poverty, threats of violence, insects, heart attacks, misgendering You travel through fairyland and the mortal world, performing as you choose. Wherever you perform, you change: you change the seasons, you change the fortunes of those you perform for, you change their hearts. You change yourselves. This is the game: we change. The circus gains two more members. Fimbly Dun delivers a warning and a promise, Esmerelda Cortada puts their affairs in order, and poor Tingley Grimbles finds herself once again laid low and quite all over the place. CW insects, police, discussion of poverty, nudity, threats of violence, aggression towards children. Paper WAYght, Westfield Olympic Park ★★★★☆ 10 reviews ★★★★☆ Paper WAYght—everything you need to know is in the name! Their range of paper, stationery tools, and greeting cards for every occasion are just what I was looking for. Whether your printer is out or you need a card pronto, they really will show you the way! (Ted Smith) ★★★★★ I was initially disappointed by long queues, inattentive staff, and a lack of truly unusual products on offer. However, with the help of a new friend and a little patience, my collection is all the richer today thanks to this store. It may take some patience and dedicated searching, but stick at it and you can walk away with some real treasures. (Angela Dawson) ★★☆☆☆ Poor service, inflated prices, and a bizarre opening day “performance” left a bad taste in my mouth. I knew then I wouldn’t be returning to Paper WAYght, but the horrific behaviour of the centre’s manager means I will never set foot in Westfield Olympic Park again (Marcus Boot). ★★★★★ A charming new store, and a magical day out for the whole family. Fingers crossed they invite the circus back for Christmas—Eric and Lucy loved the giant beetle puppet! (Sarah Connelly) As the show continues, Tingley Grimbles gives some advice, Esmerelda Cortada takes a break, and Fimbly Dun wins the day. Content warnings: Violence and death One brass and wax blunderbuss of mortal make, enchanted by goblin cunning to fire cantankerous and rather deadly hornets (Received by Cove, Steward of Scissures, on the 42nd day of Mud Season) One mirror, sans reflection. Otherwise unremarkable. (Received by Cove, Steward of Scissures, on the occasion of Gildebrand’s three-thousandth birthday) A trio of eggs, laid by a rooster stolen from the menagerie of the mortal Queen Isabella I of Spain. Containing variously the following: • A sprightly and sweeping spring breeze • A wicked and unquenchable fire • An inalienable right to usurp the throne of Castile (Received by Cove, Steward of Scissures, on the 36th day of Spring) A bone harp, strung with a selkie’s hair and carved from her beloved’s ribs. Plays itself beautifully, and allegedly foretells how listeners will die. (Received by Cove, Steward of Scissures, on the 3rd day of Winter) Joy, the magic thereof. (Received by Meg Pie, Steward of Underfoot, on the 102nd day of High Summer) As the Circus Under the Hills moves on, Esmeralda Cortada has satisfaction and makes a change, Fimbly Dun returns something precious and offers some advice, and Tingley Grimbles gives an apology and falls apart. CW Bullying, shapeshifting, threats, violence. Faerie is a land built upon metaphor and symbol. The world is both stage and oyster; night is a curtain and fortune a sea of well-armed troubles. People die for curiosity, and words cut deeper than knives. Promises are heavier than chains, obligations less gentle and still more binding, and insults are blank cheques inviting untold catastrophe. In such a place, wordplay is a dangerous game to play. “Deliver all magic unto the regent”, read the laws of Gildebrand’s Hollow. Can the Circus Under the Hills deliver the magic of joy as promised? It’s showtime at Gildebrand’s Hollow. Esmerelda Cortada offers reconciliation and seeks revenge, Fimbly Dunn gives a beautiful gift and explains (at some length) its significance, and Tingley Grimbles goes to work. CW body horror, violence, non-consensual bodily transformation There is a solemn hush to the corridors of Gildebrand’s Hollow, a stately silence that echoes longer and louder than every sound. Speech and steps are equally small before the towering grandeur of the giant’s slumber, as tiny as the fey of the Hollow are within the tunnels that honeycomb Gildebrand’s vast stony visage. But no silence is absolute. Here a rippling arpeggio hums within a grotto, a song without a player; there an empty cave bears witness to a cavalcade of conjuring punctuated by pacing patter; outside on the great cliff-face a smaller lonely quiet joins the greater silence. And as the Circus Under the Hills arrives, Fimbly Dun meets first a mirror and then a wall and finds them both unwelcome, Esmerelda Cortada leads a new suitor somewhere quite extraordinary, and faithful Grimbles finds yet again that there are things to be learned on the margins which others overlook. CW violence, murder, poison, snakes, depictions of loved ones suffering severe memory loss, assisted dying A monarch crowned with forgetfulness, a ruined kingdom crumbling as autumn sprawls on, and a throne filled by someone more strings-cut puppet than prince. And three viperous heirs, each with their own unique venom, coiled close and ready to bite. For a just king who hoped his now-forgotten children would grow close as brambles, strong as briars, and sweet as berries, could there be any bitterer end than this? After intermission, the show at Yarrow’s Folly goes on. Content warnings for threats of violence and depictions of loved ones suffering severe memory loss From days of bronze and marble to this age of wires, mortalkind have made the mind as landscape, and memories as palace. Sorrow stacked on delight, every recollection placed in a perfect order, faint childhood impressions carved and shaped into keystones. To mayfly-lived mortals, palaces boast proudly of outliving generations of flesh. But on a faery’s timeline, stone is as sand in the wind. And what might happen to a palace of a mind when the weight of years tumbles down the walls, twines ivy through the mortar and brambles through the rubble, and all is left in ruin? Amidst the Folly’s disarray, Fimbly Dun and Tingly Grimbles follow their noses to the kitchen to hear some frank truths, and meet the final claimant to the Folly’s throne. Friendship is a tree that bears many fruits: false and true, fairweather and fast, old and new. Keep your friends close, the mortals say, but when hearts and faces change with the seasons and the whirligig of time makes strangers of us all, who can tell who their true friends are. And closeness is a tricky proposition in a neglected garden where feral, choking growth has sprouted thorns. As the stage is set to meet an absent sovereign, the Circus meet the second claimant to the Folly’s throne, Tingley Grimbles makes a new friend and grows a backbone, Fimbly Dun catches up with an old friend, and Lady Esmerelda Cortada of the Fanciest Jigs hears some bad news she’d already suspected and begins to plot how to prune these brambles... CW: body horror, snakes, violence, tyrannical politicians Yarrow’s Folly slumps amidst golden fields and laden orchards, lost in the drunken stupor of an eternal late autumn sunset. Pine smoke rises from the ovens, canes and briars tangle wildly over each other, and nothing changes. Nothing has changed here for a very long time. But no autumn lasts forever. Ripeness has turned to rot, and berries spoil on the bramble. A change is needed, whether winter’s harshness, spring’s revels, or summer’s lush beauty. Amidst all this, Lady Esmerelda Cortada of the Fanciest Jigs leads a dangerous new friend down a dangerous path. CW: Bullying, Yarrow’s Folly sprawls and twines across gentle hills, amidst fields of sun-bronzed wheat grown heavy with autumn bounty and apple trees drooping boozily under the weight of cider apples. Rosy bricks lay scattered amidst the grass, towers lean and walls sag under the weight of briars and brambles, and everywhere the blackberry scrambles and clambers and curls. Inside those tumbled walls, plots and schemes and ambitions spring up like weeds while their gardener gathers wool and watches clouds. Riotous flowers flourish and thrive, feral and lush and overripe, hiding hooked and savage thorns. And what is that colourful blur on the horizon (If only you were but a colourful blur vanishing on the horizon, Esme, saith Fimbly Dun. Leaving the Grand Chandlery behind them - snow thawing, hearts melted, warmed and delighted by the show - the circus comes to a crossroads. And many more crossroads still lie before them. For one show alone, however excellent, does not a grand tour the realms make. In the aftermath of our first performance, we follow the rules of the game and plan four more anchoring shows for our tour. We daydream some places, invent some occasions, and idly wonder what things they might have in plenty and might hold dear. And then, tour planned, we choose where the circus will go next: springwards to wildflowers and gentle sunshine, or fallwards where brambles creep and tangle amidst ruined stone. CW: Bullying and abusive relationship dynamics. Bitter and sweet, sorrow and mirth, comedy and tragedy. Good times, and bad ones too. The circus, much like life, brings both in turns: sometimes stark and separate, and other times melting into one another like bright dye in pale beeswax. Lost and hidden in the dark, Fimbly Dun discovers unexpected sweetness in an encounter not planned for. Back at the wagons, Esmeralda Cortada of the Fanciest Jigs offers kindly advice and a sympathetic ear, and makes a new friend along the way. The Grand Chandlery is a place of silent focus and skillful work. Lumens and chandlers, dyers and perfumers and herbalists, famed artisans and strong-backed workers: all know the rules, all know the importance of their work, all remember their place. Or so the Head Lumen would have you believe. But every candle casts a shadow, and discontent and grievances thrive in the dark. In a cold stone chamber before a messy desk, a stranger shrugs furs close against the cold and dreams of howling under the moon. In a cold stone corridor, a labourer resigns themself to their lot and struggles under a heavy load. And in cold, stone rooms all through the Chandlery, secrets and forgotten things sit silent in the dark. There is a traveling circus under the hollow hills. We are its performers, its ringmaster, its clowns, its sideshow, its stars. We are fairy kind and human kind, and we perform for great and small, revelers all. As we prepare for this campaign we talk about media inspirations, welcome Gwen to the family, Luke yells about faeries, we discuss the media language we want to use to frame the season, agonise over playbook selection, create and introduce our characters, and talk about how everything in this game is “very good, actually”. The Grand Chandlery is a place of quiet diligence and perfected craft. Lowly lumens tend the fires that melt the comb, proud artisans produce pillar after perfect pale pillar, and the herbalists grind spices and steep dyes to make the elaborate royal candles for which the Chandlery is known. But there is a buzz in the air tonight: hushed distraction and whispered excitement in each soft-edged pool of friendly candlelight. For some, the circus offers diversion from the monotony of a thankless job. For others, it brings nothing but disruption and displeasure. But for most, the Circus Under the Hills promises relief: irreverent where they are mannered, free where they are closely watched, and above all raucous where they are small and silent. “Behold, my brethren, it is given unto you to judge, that ye may know good from evil; and the way to judge is as plain, that ye may know with a perfect knowledge, as the daylight is from the dark night. The world is hard, and there wolves and crueler things roam free, and so by the King of Life are appointed the Order Set Apart to the Preservation of Faith and the Faithful to watch over His people, and guard against wolves and wickedness, as the watchdog does to the shepherd’s flock.” We set up to play Dogs in the Vineyard, a game about young people called upon to preserve the Faithful in a hostile frontier territory. We talk about our intentions for the game, discuss mood and tone, establish Lines, Veils, and safety techniques, and create character to provoke, challenge, and drive towards conflict.
