Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

“The Church from You, dear Master, Received the gift divine; And still that light is lifted O'er all the earth to shine. It is the chart and compass That, all life's voyage through, Mid mists and rocks and quicksands Still guides, O Christ, to You. “O make Your Church, dear Savior, A lamp of burnished gold To bear before the nations Your true light as of old! O teach Your wand'ring pilgrims By this their path to trace Till, clouds and darkness ended, They see You face to face.”

Most people don't really understand that love is something that people want to give. In fact, to give love is a human need. And they don't see that a person feels loved when the love they give is fully received. Let's dive into that in this episode.

(This podcast was previously recorded and published on November 30, 2020)   Jesus Ministries, Joan Boney  ...   It is God who created each of us as HE wills.  One differs from another as we fulfill the will of God and our purpose on this present earth.   And we function as one body when we belong to God and have the Spirit of God.   Paul tells us to stay in the place where we are called by God.   Make your calling and election sure.   We are God's workmanship, created by God to do HIS will.   But some fill their lives by trying to copy other people instead of being created by God.  And Jude calls them "mockers".   Jude 17-20  But, beloved, remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ;  How that they told you there should be mockers  (imitators) in the last time, who should walk after their own ungodly lusts.  These be they who separate themselves, sensual, having not the Spirit.  But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith ...   As the body of Christ we have different purposes, different functions in the body.   Know what you are!  Serve in those gifts given you by God.

Romans 8:15 — Within certain streams of popular Bible teaching, the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit is significantly diminished. Some have emphasized the responsibility to “take” the Holy Spirit by faith. In other words, God wants to give the Spirit, one just needs to “lay hold of” Him. In this sermon on Romans 8:15 titled “Knowing You Have Received,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones finds this teaching unbiblical and troubling. In order to refute this defective teaching, he patiently works through all the New Testament references to the word “receive” and draws proper theological conclusions about the Holy Spirit and faith. Dr. Lloyd-Jones reminds that as the blessed third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit is a sovereign Lord. One must never talk as if they control Him. Nor should they, he warns, think they can simply use “faith” to “lay hold of” or “take” the Spirit. As Paul teaches in Romans 8:15, the Christian merely “receives” the Spirit of adoption. This is the consensus of the Scriptural witness. Watch how Dr. Lloyd-Jones models the proper way to handle Christian doctrine and engage those who teach heterodox views. Moreover, listen to Dr. Lloyd-Jones teach the true nature of the Spirit's sovereignty and how He comes to the believer.

David Hutchens: Story Dash David Hutchens works with leaders around the world to find, craft, and tell their most urgent stories for the purpose of creating shared meaning, preserving culture, disseminating learning, and speeding change in organizations. He has taught the Storytelling Leader program at some of the most influential organizations, including NASA, Paypal, Loreal Paris, Cisco, Walmart, Google, and FedEx. He's written many books, including the Circle of the 9 Muses, Story Dash, and The Leadership Story Deck. When organizational change is happening, leaders need to be intentional about lining up with culture, especially if it's the time to shift that culture just a bit. We often do the logistics well, but we miss the power of both the human and emotional connections. In this episode, David and I discuss how story can help us make a meaningful shift. Key Points The organizations that are being intentional about culture are also being intentional about story. Getting beyond the logistics of changes and leaning first into humanity and emotion help people frame cultural shifts. Leaders go first. Embodied stories from leaders are surprising, counter-cultural, and repeatable. Asking for stories is rarely sufficient. Instead, invite stories through intentional prompts like, “Tell me about a time you felt more engaged, alive, and happiest in your work here.” Received stories are the ones told by employees. Adding an emotion word to an invitation such as, “What's a time you were proud?” often surfaces more genuine stories. David is now a Coaching for Leaders expert partner.
