Can an artist from outside a community become an effective force for change—or does arriving with good intentions risk repeating the very patterns the work is meant to challenge?Bill Cleveland joins Alice Lovelace and Barbara Schaffer Bacon to examine one of community arts practice's most persistent questions: when outsiders enter a community, what allows their work to take root, and what turns a promising intervention into a brief visit—or even a source of harm? Through stories from Serbia, Atlanta, Ohio, and rural Georgia, the conversation moves beyond simple answers and into the practical ethics of entering another community's living room.Listen for three ideas that can change how artists, hosts, and funders approach community-based work:Why local knowledge and leadership must shape the work from the beginning—not merely approve it afterward. How an outside artist can sometimes become a catalyst, witness, or lightning rod when local people cannot safely raise a difficult issue themselves. Why the deepest measure of success is not the artwork left behind, but the relationships, skills, confidence, and community power that remain after the artist leaves.Join us for a candid exploration of what it means to enter with humility, listen for the truth of a place, share leadership, and leave a community more able to tell—and act upon—its own story.Notable MentionsPeopleAlice Lovelace: Poet, educator, performer, and Executive Director of ArtsXchange whose decades of community-based practice inform the episode's most vivid stories about the opportunities and risks faced by visiting artists.Barbara Schaffer Bacon: Cultural policy leader and co-founder of Animating Democracy, known for advancing ethical, reciprocal, and civically engaged arts practice.Bill Cleveland: Host of ART IS CHANGE and longtime community arts practitioner whose book Art and Upheaval examined artists working amid war, oppression, displacement, and social crisis.Dijana Milošević: Serbian theater director, activist, and co-founder of DAH Theatre, cited for describing artists resisting tyranny as citizens acting inside their own community.Slobodan Milošević: Serbian and Yugoslav political leader whose authoritarian rule and the wars surrounding Yugoslavia's breakup form the historical setting for the discussion of DAH Theatre.John O'Neal: Civil rights activist, playwright, co-founder of the Free Southern Theater, and a major developer of story-circle practice in community cultural work.Liz Lerman: Choreographer, educator, and civic arts pioneer whose residencies model inquiry, participation, and shared creative leadership.Michael Rohd: Theater-maker, facilitator, and civic-practice leader whose community residencies use creative process to support public dialogue and local problem-solving.Organizations & InitiativesCenter for the Study of Art & Community: Producer of ART IS CHANGE and a resource for arts-based community development and cultural organizing.ArtsXchange: Atlanta-area interdisciplinary arts center connecting artistic practice, community development, environmental work, and social justice.DAH Theatre Research Center: Belgrade-based theater laboratory founded during the breakup of Yugoslavia, using performance as a form of resistance, memory, and civic engagement.Urban Bush Women: Black women-led dance company and social-change organization that combines performance, artist development, education, and deep community engagement.Animating Democracy: National initiative documenting and strengthening the role of arts and culture in civic dialogue, community change, and democracy.Appalshop: Appalachian media, arts, and education organization dedicated to telling stories from within the region and challenging stereotypes through locally rooted cultural work.CETA Arts Legacy Project: Project preserving the history of federally supported artist employment under the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act, referenced through artists who worked in communities with unusually open-ended assignments.Events & ProgramsHurricane Katrina: The devastating 2005 Gulf Coast hurricane whose aftermath prompted many artists to seek ways to enter affected communities and help—raising difficult questions about urgency, expertise, and the impulse to parachute in.Story Circle: A structured method for sharing personal experience, discovering common ground, and grounding community work in local voices; used in the Lima, Ohio residencies discussed in the episode. Macoskey explains that while language models have improved with internet connectivity, they still struggle with outdated information and proprietary data. He highlights Lovelace's context engine, which integrates data from various sources into a knowledge graph, addressing issues like entity resolution and recall. This system ensures AI agents can provide accurate, cited information, enhancing trust and decision-making. The conversation also touches on the challenges of scaling large language models and the importance of grounding AI responses in reliable data.

Submit here.A rarely staged musical comedyChristine Sweet, a retired classical music radio host in St. Paul, is looking forward to seeing Minneapolis Musical Theatre's production of "Grumpy Old Men," a musical adaptation of the 1993 romcom set in Wabasha. The musical runs April 3–19 at the Conn Theater in Minneapolis.Christine says: MMT brings us new and rarely performed musicals, digging deep to find forgotten gems and often presenting the local premieres of chosen works, which is the case with this production of “Grumpy Old Men.” After a hard winter, we could use some belly laughs at the foibles of two lifelong rivals vying through snow and ice-fishing for the attention of their attractive new neighbor.MMT draws on the Twin Cities' wealth of vocal, instrumental and theatrical talent, and I can't wait to hear what they do with the soundtrack, which was commercially recorded just two years ago.”— Christine SweetA poetic look at a scientific pioneerCarolyn Pool, a writer and performer in St. Paul, recommends seeing “Ada Lovelace: Bride of Science,” a new play staged by nimbus theatre. Daughter of the famed poet Lord Byron, Lovelace (1815-1852) was a mathematical genius who invented the Analytical Engine, a prototype for early computers. Carolyn says this play offers a great way to introduce children to an important historical figure in STEM. This show has sliding scale tickets. It runs April 4–19 at The Crane Theater in northeast Minneapolis. The play is written by Twin Cities performer Nissa Nordland, who is also the head of the Twin Cities Horror Fest. Carolyn says: [Nordlund] has a very, very big interest in both science and beauty and poetry. And so this is going to be, yes, a play about a woman in science, and it's going to be poetic, full of beautiful language and stellar performances.— Carolyn PoolContinuing a quiltmaker's legacyBrie Taralson owns Lykke Books, across the street from the Grand Center for Arts and Culture in New Ulm. She wants people to see the beautiful quiltwork on display in the Grand's current exhibition, “Picking Up the Piecework: A Legacy of Creativity Through the Lens of Mary Hartten.” After Hartten, an avid quilter, died, her family gave her fabric and unfinished piecework to be sold to benefit The Grand. This exhibit features quilts that have been made — in a variety of styles — using those pieces, thus continuing Hartten's legacy. The exhibit runs through April 24.On Sat. April 10 at 5 p.m., Mary's son Randy Hartten will give a presentation about “An Unfinished Project,” a printed book of 54 of Mary's quilt squares. Brie describes that project.Brie says: What's really neat is you can actually see the “finished side” on one and flip the book over and see exactly how precise she was and how complicated the stitching was on the other side. And so you get a true behind-the-scenes look at how much math and geometry and and precision that was needed to do this well. [Mary's children] had this bound, and the the book itself is a piece of art. It's quite literally stitched together of her quilt pieces.— Brie Taralson

The conversation emphasizes the importance of regulatory specialists in product development, best practices around documentation, and how brands, big or small, should prioritize compliance to prevent costly mistakes. This is not another book about how machines are becoming too smart, or a lecture about how we may lose control. It is the story of how artificial intelligence was born from human longing, grief, and ambition. And it is the story of the humans who are at the forefront of this field, from Hinton to Lovelace, Turing to Altman.Always the same: Are you scared? Should I be scared?' We have all heard the stories and had barroom conversations. There is no point in beating around the bush. The conversation about AI can be terrifying. From the far- fetched fantasy of killer robots taking over to the very real threat of mass automation, it seems like AI captured the public imagination overnight.”He is the author of "Artificially Intelligent: The Very Human Story of AI." https://www.amazon.ae/Artificially-Intelligent-Very-Human-Story/dp/1487567677http://www.yourlotandparcel.org

As healthcare systems worldwide face rising costs, workforce shortages, and increasing pressure to balance quality with financial sustainability, traditional classroom-based management education is struggling to keep pace. According to the World Economic Forum, healthcare spending now accounts for nearly 10% of global GDP, making leadership decision-making more consequential—and more complex—than ever. At the same time, educators and executives alike are searching for ways to prepare leaders for real-world uncertainty, not just theoretical case studies. So how do you train healthcare leaders to make better decisions when the stakes are high, the data is imperfect, and the environment is constantly changing? That's the core question explored in the latest episode of I Don't Care, hosted by Dr. Kevin Stevenson, featuring Jeremy Lovelace, Founding Director of HFX Technologies Group. Stevenson and Lovelace dive into how simulation-based healthcare management education is reshaping the way future and current healthcare leaders learn strategy, finance, and human-centered decision-making—across borders, systems, and sectors.Key Takeaways from the Conversation…Simulation over static cases: Dynamic, financially driven simulations provide a more realistic and measurable way to train healthcare decision-makers than traditional case competitions or lectures.Global adaptability: A simulation originally modeled on a leading Brazilian hospital has proven effective across diverse systems, including U.S. health systems, European providers, and the UK's NHS.Human skills under pressure: Beyond financial metrics, simulations reveal leadership gaps in teamwork, stress management, and judgment under uncertainty—often the most powerful learning outcomes.Jeremy Lovelace is the Founding Director of HFX Technologies Group, a firm specializing in simulation-based training for strategic and financial decision-making. With a background in management consulting and decision science, Lovelace has worked extensively with universities, healthcare organizations, and public-sector institutions across Europe, the Americas, and beyond. His work includes partnerships with global business schools such as University College London and simulations inspired by top-tier healthcare institutions like Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein in Brazil. Lovelace holds an MBA and brings decades of experience in leadership development, education technology, and applied strategy.
