I've spoken quite a few times on this podcast about how tall women are masculinized. It can look like people saying they feel “so small” around you. Always asking you to carry the heavy stuff because you're “big and strong”. Being told you're intimidating or scary. Misgendering even. There are many examples of this actually happening to us, but not really the other side of things: us internalizing this and finding it weird or awkward to portray ourselves in a feminine way. This is a struggle that many of us tall women face. So we're gonna talk a little bit about this in today's episode and even take it a step further and talk about how when some tall women try to come across as/be feminine, they are “punished” for it. The final episode of the Queer Forms and Pronouns series got a bit more personal than I expected. The incredible Teagan Bradway and I speak about misgendering ourselves, giving the gift of language to our loved ones and why not just the function but also the beauty of gender-nonconformity pronouns is politically and personally significant. We speak about my anxieties about it pronouns and how this plays out in different genres from speculative fiction to memoir. Federico in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit on September 10, 2025. Argued by Institute for Free Speech Senior Attorney Del Kolde (on behalf of Gays Against Groomers, et al.) and Edward T. Ramey (on behalf of Garcia, et al.)Background of the case [from the Institute for Free Speech case page]:Colorado legislators' actions to suppress and ban disfavored speech during public comment time on HB24-1071, dubbed “Tiara's Law,” represent an alarming assault on First Amendment rights. Trans ideology requires adherents to use a trans-identifying person's preferred pronouns and adopted trans name. Doing otherwise is called “misgendering” or “deadnaming.” During hearings on what its sponsors called “Tiara's Law” certain legislators required that all speakers refrain from misgendering or deadnaming and engage only in “respectful discourse.” Speakers who failed to comply were interrupted, cut off, and prevented from expressing their opinions, including that “Tiara” is a male felon who illustrates why name changes should not be so easy.
