People who were sexually abused as children and later seek help for mental health problems are being failed by the NHS, according to The Royal College of Psychiatrists. The RCOP has issued a public apology, saying decades of mismanagement and misdiagnosis have left many survivors without the support they need. Anita Rani is joined by Caroline Thompson, a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, and Dr Jo Stubley, a consultant psychiatrist and clinical lead of the Tavistock Trauma Service, who are co-authors of the RCOP's position statement. Today in towns and cities across the country, parents are being encouraged to go on strike to raise awareness about, what the strike's organisers say are the rising costs of raising children and the impossible demands this puts on parents. Anna Whitehouse, the founder of Flex Appeal, and George Gabriel, who co-founded The Dad Shift, discuss the flexible working and parental leave policies that they are calling for with The Parent Strike and how the Government is responding. For more than a decade, armed gangs in northern Nigeria have repeatedly targeted schools, kidnapping children for ransom and forcing some educational establishments to close. BBC journalist Yemisi Adegoke has recently returned from the state of Zamfara, where ongoing insecurity has left many girls unable to attend school, threatening their futures.Bella Mackie's third novel, Claws Out!, is published this week. It's a witty crime caper about an ageing ‘gold-digger,' who is rumoured to have murdered three husbands and has a new suitor in sight. Bella - whose debut How to Kill Your Family is currently being turned into a Netflix series starring Anya Taylor-Joy - tells Anita why she loves exploring the British class system in her books and why she's determined to use her platform to talk openly about mental health.Presenter: Anita Rani Producer: Rebecca Myatt

Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Kidnappings may be relatively rare in many parts of the United States, but when they occur, they can quickly become some of the most complicated and dangerous cases police officers investigate. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. For Brian Brady, retired Chief of Police for the Novato Police Department in California, one such investigation began with a violent attack at a tennis club. It developed into the kidnapping of a woman, an intensive police investigation, and several arrests. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. #LawEnforcementTalk #Free #Podcast #Radio Brady shares the remarkable case, along with stories from his extensive law enforcement career, during an interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. The episode is available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major Podcast platforms. It is also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and additional social media outlets. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. The conversation explores the rescue of a kidnapping victim, the painstaking investigation that followed, and an unrelated barricade involving a mentally disturbed armed man. It also examines Brady's transition from police chief to corporate security executive and True Crime author. A Violent Kidnapping involving a California Tennis Club Management Couple The kidnapping case involved the attack of a married couple that managed a tennis club. What should have been an ordinary day suddenly turned into a nightmare when strangers confronted the couple. The husband was reportedly pistol-whipped, and his wife was abducted. The attackers were armed, violent, and willing to use force. Police were confronted with two immediate priorities: locating the kidnapped woman before she could be seriously injured or killed and identifying the people responsible for the crime. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. The conversation is available on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and most other major podcast platforms, where audiences continue discovering firsthand accounts from those who have lived them. “When a person is taken at gunpoint, every minute matters,” Brady explains during the interview. “The first concern is always the safety of the victim. At the same time, investigators have to begin preserving evidence and identifying everyone who may have been involved.” Unlike many kidnapping cases in which the victim and offender know one another, this case involved strangers. That created additional investigative challenges because there was no immediately obvious relationship or personal dispute pointing police toward a suspect. The victim had disappeared, her husband had been violently assaulted, and investigators had limited time to determine where she had been taken. Police Save the Kidnapping Victim The police response ultimately produced the result everyone had hoped for: officers found and rescued the kidnapped woman. Her safe recovery, however, did not end the case. Once the victim was protected, the focus shifted toward determining exactly what had happened, identifying every participant, and gathering enough evidence to support criminal charges. Brady describes police work as a process that frequently continues long after the most visible danger has passed. The public may see the rescue or initial arrest, but investigators must then reconstruct the crime in a way that will withstand scrutiny in court. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. “The rescue is the moment everyone remembers,” Brady says. “But the investigation is what holds the entire case together.” Detectives needed to examine the original crime scene, document the assault on the husband, interview the victims and witnesses, and trace the movements of the kidnappers. They also had to determine whether additional people had helped plan or carry out the crime. Investigators could not afford to assume that the first person identified was the only offender. Kidnappings can involve drivers, lookouts, planners, and others who knowingly assist before, during, or after the abduction. The detailed investigation eventually resulted in several arrests. Three people were reportedly taken into custody in connection with the kidnapping. The Investigation and Several Arrests A successful kidnapping prosecution requires more than suspicion. Investigators must establish the role played by each alleged offender and connect that person to the crime through reliable evidence. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. That evidence may include witness statements, physical evidence, photographs, surveillance footage, telephone records, vehicle information, fingerprints, forensic findings, and statements made by the suspects. Although Brady does not reveal every sensitive detail of the case, he emphasizes the importance of patience and coordination. “Complex cases are built one fact at a time,” he explains. “Investigators have to follow the evidence wherever it leads and avoid becoming locked into a theory too early.” Police also must consider whether the crime crosses jurisdictional boundaries. If a victim is transported across state lines or other circumstances bring the offense under federal jurisdiction, federal kidnapping statutes may apply. Under 18 U.S. Code § 1201, kidnapping can become a serious federal offense carrying severe penalties. California also has its own kidnapping laws and sentencing provisions. The precise charges depend on the facts, including whether a weapon was used, whether the victim suffered bodily harm, how the victim was moved or confined, and whether ransom, robbery, or another crime was involved. In the tennis club case, the violent assault, armed abduction, rescue, and eventual arrests illustrate why kidnapping investigations demand immediate action followed by methodical detective work. The case also demonstrates the emotional strain placed on victims. The physical rescue may occur within hours, but the psychological effects can last for years. When a Barricade Turned Deadly The kidnapping investigation was not the only critical incident Brady encountered during his law enforcement career. Earlier in his career, he tested for a police captain's position and was hired in Farmington, New Mexico. While serving there, he became involved in a dangerous call involving an armed, mentally disturbed man. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. The incident reportedly began when the man lost control and set his own residence on fire. As flames spread, the emergency became both a fire scene and an armed barricade. Police officers, firefighters, and tactical personnel faced an almost impossible situation. They had to contain the fire, protect neighboring residents, and attempt to prevent the armed man from harming himself or anyone else. Responders wanted to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion. According to Brady, officers considered using a fire hose to disable or disorient the man without using deadly force. It was an unusual strategy, but the circumstances were anything but ordinary. “They were searching for every reasonable option that might end the confrontation without someone dying,” Brady recalls. “The goal was to create an opportunity to take him into custody safely.” The plan changed when the suspect returned carrying a gun. At that moment, the threat was no longer theoretical. An armed man was confronting police during an active fire and barricade situation. A SWAT officer ultimately shot and killed him. Extraordinary Efforts to Avoid Deadly Force Officer-involved shootings are often judged through short video clips, incomplete reports, or information released before an investigation is finished. Brady's account shows how much may occur before an officer fires a weapon. Police had attempted to contain the suspect. They considered less-lethal and unconventional methods. They tried to create time and distance. Yet the suspect's return with a firearm forced officers to react to an immediate threat. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast continues bringing listeners real conversations from the front lines of crime, policing, trauma, survival, and healing. “No officer arrives at a scene hoping it will end with a fatal shooting,” Brady says. “The objective is to protect life, including the life of the person creating the danger. But circumstances can change in seconds.” Armed barricades involving mental illness create especially difficult decisions. Officers must balance compassion for a person in crisis against their responsibility to protect firefighters, neighbors, fellow officers, and the public. Mental illness may help explain a person's behavior, but it does not make an armed threat less dangerous. When a suspect presents a firearm, officers have only moments to assess intent, opportunity, distance, surroundings, and the risk to innocent people. The Farmington incident remained memorable to Brady because of the extraordinary efforts made to resolve it peacefully, and because those efforts ultimately could not prevent a fatal outcome. From Police Officer to Police Chief Brady's law enforcement journey carried him through several very different communities. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was inspired by the city's architecture, sports teams, traditions, neighborhoods, and colorful personalities. That environment later influenced both his police career and his fiction. His work took him from the eclectic streets of Berkeley to Farmington's Southwestern landscape and eventually back to the California Bay Area. He later became Chief of Police in Novato. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. Each assignment offered different challenges. A police officer in a major metropolitan area may encounter problems that differ from those faced by officers in a smaller community. Yet the fundamental responsibilities remain the same: protect life, investigate crime, communicate clearly, and make difficult decisions under pressure. Leadership added another dimension to Brady's career. As a chief, he was responsible not only for individual incidents but also for agency policy, officer development, public trust, emergency preparedness, and relationships throughout the community. The kidnapping investigation and armed barricade illustrate the range of situations police leaders must understand. One case required detailed investigative coordination and several arrests. The other demanded crisis management during an active fire and confrontation with an armed suspect. A New Career in Corporate Security After leaving municipal law enforcement, Brady moved into the private sector and became a corporate security executive. His experience led to executive positions with prestigious organizations, including NBC Universal and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The transition may appear dramatic, but many skills learned in police work transfer naturally into corporate security. Risk assessment, crisis response, investigations, personnel management, threat prevention, and communication are valuable in both professions. The show is distributed through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and other podcast platforms. Its interviews are also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels. Brady's career also brought him into contact with people from many backgrounds. Those encounters gave him a collection of personalities, conflicts, and stories that eventually inspired his work as an author. His professional journey became the foundation for a new form of storytelling, one that blends imagination with an insider's understanding of police work. From True Crime Experience to Fiction Brady entered the literary world with his debut novel, "Oh, What A Tangled Web", available through Amazon and Kindle. The Book introduced readers to San Francisco Police Department homicide inspectors whose investigations unfold against the city Brady knows so well. He continued their adventures in "Hiding In Plain Sight" and "Greed", his third Book, released in April 2025 by Palmetto Publishing. His fourth novel, Still Waters Run DEEP, was published in January 2026. It represents a departure from his familiar San Francisco setting and the SFPD homicide inspectors featured in his earlier work. Although the novels are fictional, Brady's law enforcement background gives him an understanding of police culture, investigative procedure, internal pressures, and the personal cost of confronting violence. His stories appeal to readers drawn to crime fiction, police investigations, mysteries, and True Crime themes. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. “A writer never has to reproduce a real case to be influenced by a career in law enforcement,” Brady observes. “The emotions, the personalities, the difficult decisions, and the unexpected turns all stay with you.” The Influence of Joseph Wambaugh The Podcast conversation also examines Joseph A. Wambaugh Jr., one of America's best-known writers of police fiction and nonfiction. Wambaugh joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1960 and served for approximately 14 years, rising from patrol officer to detective sergeant. He also earned bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University, Los Angeles. His novels frequently featured Los Angeles police officers as central characters. Rather than portraying them as one-dimensional heroes, Wambaugh wrote about flawed, complicated human beings affected by the pressures of the profession. Among his most famous works are The New Centurions and The Onion Field. His writing earned three Edgar Awards, and the Mystery Writers of America named him a Grand Master. Comparisons between Brady and Wambaugh naturally emerge because both transformed police experience into storytelling. However, each author brings a distinctive voice, background, and perspective to the page. Wambaugh helped change how police officers were depicted in American literature. Brady carries that tradition forward by drawing upon his experiences in California, New Mexico, municipal policing, police leadership, and corporate security. Life in Sonoma County Brady now lives with his wife in picturesque Sonoma County. Both are San Francisco natives. The quieter setting offers a contrast to the energy and congestion of the city, while San Francisco remains only about an hour away. That allows the couple to return whenever they want to reconnect with its distinctive neighborhoods, culture, and atmosphere. For Brady, the distance may also provide the space needed to reflect and write. His life has moved through several chapters: San Francisco native, police officer, captain, police chief, corporate security executive, and published author. Each chapter contributed experiences that now shape his books and public conversations. A Podcast for Police and True Crime Audiences Brian Brady's appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast provides much more than a summary of old police cases. It offers a firsthand examination of how police saved a kidnapping victim, conducted the investigation, and made several arrests. It also reveals the difficult choices officers faced when an armed, mentally disturbed man turned a fire into a barricade and deadly confrontation. The episode connects real police work with leadership, corporate security, books, crime fiction, and the lasting influence of writers such as Joseph Wambaugh. Listeners can hear the full interview through Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major Podcast platforms. Additional stories, photographs, and episode updates are available through Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and the show's other social media channels. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Brady's story is ultimately about far more than crime. It is about decisions made under extreme pressure, victims rescued from danger, investigators determined to uncover the truth, and a former California police chief who transformed decades of experience into a new career as an author. The badge may have represented one chapter of his life, but the stories did not end when his police career did. Breaking The Silence with Dr Gregory Williams Fault Lines, Family Trauma, and the Courage to Still Stand Dr. Gregory Williams speaks with author Tim Smith about childhood kidnapping, neglect, shame, therapy, memory, identity, and how telling the truth can turn trauma into hope, healing, and personal power. This week's guest is Tim Smith. Tim grew up in the rural South in an environment shaped by addiction, instability and neglect--experiences that would later form the emotional backbone of his writing. His book, "Faultline" was released recently. Guest Spotlight: Tim Smith Tim Smith is the author of Fault Line: Still Standing, a memoir rooted in his childhood experiences of family instability, neglect, trauma, and the long process of naming what happened to him. In this episode, he discusses being taken from his father by his mother at age six, the emotional “fault line” that shaped his life, the role of therapy in recovering memory and meaning, and the hard-won belief that a person's past can shape them without defining them. Opening From Houston With a Message About Trauma and Truth In this episode of Breaking the Silence, Dr. Gregory Williams opens from Houston, Texas, reflecting on birthdays, memories, and how significant moments can bring both good and painful emotions to the surface. Before introducing his guest, he continues a series of practical reflections on healing from abuse and trauma. His first point is to tell yourself the truth: admit what happened, acknowledge that it was not your fault, and stop hiding the reality of the pain. He also reminds listeners that trauma may affect behavior, triggers, and responses, but it is not the whole of a person's identity. Separating Identity From Experience Dr. Williams emphasizes that what happened to someone is not the same as who they are. He tells listeners that abuse, domestic violence, neglect, human trafficking, and other traumatic experiences may shape a person's reactions, but they do not define the person's worth or future. He uses his own life as an example, saying that aspects of how he showers, dresses, and responds to certain situations were shaped by childhood abuse, yet those experiences are not his identity. He frames this as a key part of healing: replacing “what's wrong with me?” with “what happened to me, and what support do I need?” Breaking the Silence Safely Another key lesson Dr. Williams shares is the importance of breaking silence carefully and safely. He encourages survivors to find someone trustworthy before sharing painful truths, whether that person is a spouse, counselor, pastor, teacher, friend, or another safe support. He recommends journaling as a first step, then sharing only a small portion when the time feels right. For Dr. Williams, secrets can become a prison, but safe disclosure can bring relief, healing, and resilience when the listener believes the survivor and does not push them away. Tim Smith and the Fault Line of His Life After apologizing for a scheduling mistake the previous week, Dr. Williams welcomes Tim Smith, author of Fault Line: Still Standing. Tim explains that the story had been inside him for years, but therapy helped him realize that what he had treated as mere facts were actually emotionally loaded experiences. The central “fault line” of his life, he says, was when his mother took him from his father at age six. He had not originally used the word “kidnapping” for the experience until his husband, who has a background in social work, pointed out that being taken against his will and hidden from his father for a year fit that description. Memory, Music, and the Body's Record of Trauma Tim describes how therapy reopened memories he had not revisited for decades, almost like a dam breaking. As he began writing, sensory details returned through images, sounds, smells, songs, and scenes from childhood. He explains that, as a photographer and visual person, the pictures in his mind contain “all of the data”: emotion, sound, smell, and memory. One song, Meat Loaf's “Two Out of Three Ain't Bad,” instantly pulls him back to a specific childhood scene. The conversation shows how trauma is stored not only as narrative memory, but also through the body, the senses, and emotional association. Kidnapping, Silence, and Dissociation Tim recounts the morning his mother took him, describing how she woke him, had him kiss his father goodbye, and led him toward a car driven by his soon-to-be stepfather. He remembers becoming immediately frightened, crying in the back seat, and later being threatened that he would be left on the side of the interstate if he did not stop. Afterward, he lived in trailer parks and became nonverbal at home for about a year, using silence as the only weapon available to him as a small child. He also describes staring out windows and mentally leaving situations he could not control, a pattern of dissociation that continued as a survival tool. Shame, Neglect, and Reclaiming Worth The middle section of the interview explores Tim's childhood neglect, poverty, and shame. He remembers not being fed breakfast, being placed on free breakfast and lunch programs, and being mocked at home for his body and perceived effeminacy. He says that abuse, neglect, and homophobic shaming made him fearful and ashamed for decades. Later in life, even while working in private equity in Beverly Hills, he still had to challenge the internal belief that he was somehow less than everyone else. Through therapy, reflection, and the writing of his memoir, Tim came to see that the darkness of his past was not who he was. Therapy, Meaning, and the Ingredients of Peace Tim and Dr. Williams discuss therapy, trust, medication, shutdown, suicidal despair, and the search for meaning after Tim's mother died, September 11 happened, and he lost his job in quick succession. Tim says writing the book became therapeutic, though it also brought intense PTSD moments and painful memories. When Dr. Williams asks him to imagine cooking up “peace” on a Waffle House grill, Tim names ingredients such as believing in yourself, knowing who you are, stability, routine, love, a safe relationship, dogs, and the feeling of taking a nap on a rainy Sunday afternoon. His definition of peace is simple, embodied, safe, and deeply earned. Taking Back Power and Choosing Hope Near the end, Dr. Williams asks Tim what he would say to listeners who have carried trauma for decades. Tim tells them to be brave, to understand that healing may require burning like a phoenix, and to remember that pain may be part of them but does not control them. He urges people to take back power from the false narratives in their heads, from abusive or neglectful parental voices, and from a past that is not their identity. The episode closes with Dr. Williams recommending Fault Line: Still Standing, sharing Tim's website faultlinememoir.com and Instagram Tim.Smith.writes, and reminding listeners that there is always hope, no matter what happened to them.

Episode 427: In the summer of 1934, John Sackville Labatt was one of the most recognizable names in Canada. The fifty-three-year-old president of John Labatt Limited had spent nearly two decades running one of the country's largest and oldest breweries, a family business built across three generations and tested by Prohibition, the Depression, and the rum-running trade that kept it alive through both. On the morning of August 14, he left his Lake Huron summer home running late for a meeting and took a shortcut through the forest on a little-used dirt road outside Sarnia. What happened on that road set off the largest manhunt in Canadian history, triggered Canada's first kidnapping trial, and sent an innocent man to prison for a crime he had nothing to do with. Nervous System Hacking, Willpower vs Habit Systems, Calendar Time Blocking, and the Wallet Posture Fix Damaging Your Spine Most people think surviving a life-threatening situation comes down to luck. Jordan Harbinger did it twice, and what got him out wasn't luck, it was a nervous system he had trained to override panic. This episode breaks down what actually happens in your body during a real fight-or-flight response, and how those same tools power his approach to human performance and hacking the excuses that keep most people stuck. Host Dave Asprey sits down with Jordan Harbinger, founder of The Art of Charm, one of the top podcasts in the world on charisma, negotiation, and relationship building. Jordan built his expertise the hard way, surviving two real kidnapping attempts using the same psychological principles he now teaches to entrepreneurs and high performers. That firsthand experience under extreme pressure is exactly what makes his insight into stress, willpower, and behavior change worth trusting. Jordan and Dave dig into what your nervous system does under real threat, why adrenaline hijacks rational thought, and how to build resilience that holds up when it matters most. They unpack why willpower fails as a long-term strategy, and why building smarter systems, not more discipline, is the real key to lasting change. Jordan breaks down his calendar-based productivity method, explains how sleep optimization and chronotype shape daily performance, and reveals a bizarre, physical habit quietly wrecking most people's spine and posture without them realizing it. This is essential listening for anyone serious about biohacking, human performance, hacking the nervous system, brain optimization, neuroplasticity, and longevity, and building resilience that performs under real pressure, not just in theory. You'll Learn: How Jordan Harbinger used psychology to talk his way out of two real kidnapping attempts What actually happens in your nervous system during a fight-or-flight response Why willpower fails as a long-term strategy and what to build instead How a calendar-based system eliminates decision fatigue and boosts daily performance How sleep optimization and chronotype affect brain function and productivity Why your wallet might be quietly damaging your spine and posture How to rewire ingrained habits and reactions through neuroplasticity and awareness Thank you to our sponsors! - PredictiveMind™ | Get your Brain Pattern Mapping report at predictivemind.io/dave and use code DAVE for 10% off. - EMR-Tek | https://www.emr-tek.com/DAVE and use code DAVE for 40% off. - iRestore | Reverse hair loss at www.irestore.com/DAVE and get exclusive savings on the iRestore Elite, use code DAVE Dave Asprey is a four-time New York Times bestselling author, founder of Bulletproof Coffee, and the father of biohacking.
