Max Lander and Aaron King dig through RPGs of yore to bring you valuable nuggets of mechanics, lore, and strangeness. They read the fucking manual so that you don't have to. We continue on our journey to cure our brains of D&D. This time, our delicious medicine is Dream Askew/Dream Apart by Avery Alder and Benjamin Rosenbaum. We recorded it a while back, so I don't remember what else we talked about. If you want to chat about the episode, join our Discord. And check us out on Patreon for extra episodes!
This week I sat down with a crew of folks to talk all about our favorite, non-Dragon Game(tm), tabletop RPGs. We go through a LOT of them, so buckle up and hopefully you learn about a new game you want to try! A few standouts we spend a bit of time on: Masks by Magpie Games Galactic 2e by riley renthal Games built on Belonging Outside Belonging (Crisis, Dream Apart, Dream Askew, Sleepaway) There were a ton more, so be sure to jot down your favorites! Jahrhunderts.
Part of a series of table-top RPGs set in a Weird West, run for The Gauntlet. Dream Aflame is a GMless three-player tabletop RPG in which you play as desperate survivors in a desolate land of magic and danger - and also as the land and its denizens. In it, you are responsible for your own survival, and that of your Wicked triad. It's up to you to learn how well you handle that responsibility, and what relationships grow as a result. Will you learn strange secrets? Will you build something that can last? Will you simply survive, bickering and bitter all the while, or will something sweeter bloom from the toxic ground? The game uses the Belonging Outside Belonging system, famously originated in Avery Alder's game Dream Askew, and draws inspiration from a multitude of sources, including the video game Pyre and the music of The Dead South. Dream Aflame is by Quintessential Gaming and is available here https://quintessential-gaming.itch.io/dream-aflame

What happens when a jaded spy and a blackmailed droid get handed an innocent new recruit to bring along on a high-stakes suicide mission? The answer might inspire you, make you cry, or hopefully even both! Find out on this episode, in which regular guests Fae and Bridget play the game going rogue with special guest—and the creator of the system herself—Jess Levine. Consider backing the ongoing crowdfunder on Game on Tabletop for Jess's new game “I Have the High Ground” to help it secure a print run and the stretch goal of an actual play from Bridget and Fae! going rogue is an expansion for galactic 2e by riley rethal. It is built on the Belong Outside Belonging engine originally constructed by Avery Alder and Benjamin Rosebaum for their games Dream Askew and Dream Apart. Jess also makes music, which can be found on her Bandcamp. The intro music from this episode comes from the track Glass & Steel off of her album Archive. All of her work can be found on her website jessfrom.online and on her Twitter @jessfromonline. You can find Bridget on Twitter as @unsatisfiedkitt.

Coming onto the show is Avery Alder, a game designer bringing a queer perspective to roleplaying games. Mary Anne and Ben talk with Avery about her various projects, the interesting aspects of narrative scaffolding and restraint offered by RPGs, and the genesis of Ben and Avery's collaboration on "Dream Askew" and "Dream Apart", two games of Belonging Outside Belonging. In our FINAL SEASON ONE EPISODE (!!) Nat and Nina are joined by Ellie Yanigasawa, Delesslin "Roo" George Warren, TreaAndrea Russworm, and Austen Osworth in the second half of our live play of Dream Askew. It's post-collapse mayhem, relationship talks and glowing mushroom bacchanals with a little gang fighting thrown in there for good measure. Then we're taking a break for the fall, and we'll be back with season two of Queers at the End of the World in January 2022! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/queerworlds/support
Gil and Sen are delighted to have RPG/story game designer Avery Alder on the show to talk about her games that show how communities deal with upheaval and change. We also discuss the change that RPGs saw in the past 20 years, going from the expectation of custom, bespoke systems for each game to the consensual adoption of systems like Powered by the Apocalypse and Forged in the Dark. SHOW NOTES 02m39s: The Forge is no longer active, but you can read its archives here. Also, My Life With Master. 04m24s: The RPG Top Secret. 07m52s: Jiangshi. 10m36s: Here's Avery's talk at NYU's practice convention. Also, Dream Askew, and Apocalypse World. 14m09s: Dungeon World (note that its designer Adam Koebel has behaved problematically in the past, showing issues with consent in games - content warning for mention of sexual assault in link), Monster of the Week (and the Adventure Zone podcast), Avery's game Monsterhearts (now implemented as Monsterhearts 2), and the Powered by the Apocalypse system. 15m17s: Blades in the Dark, the Forged in the Dark system, and Scum & Villainy 16m36s: Dream Apart, Sleepaway, and the Belonging Outside Belonging system. 29m34s: Volley Boys, based on the anime Haikyu!! 39m19s: The Quiet Year 44m34s: Bohnanza 50m09s: Dramatic structures, including the 3-Act Structure, and the Hero's Journey 57m13s: The minis game Hordes, and its Legion of Everblight expansion. 1h07m13s: Geoff and Gil discussed hard vs. soft incentives in Ludology 185 - Soft Boiled. Nat and Nina interview Avery Alder, who designs queer table top roleplaying games of monstrosity, love and community—like the acclaimed Monsterhearts 2 and the post-apocalyptic game The Quiet Year. Avery's game Dream Askew, is designed to help folks imagine what queer community looks like in a post-collapse society, and that makes it the perfect vehicle to help Queers at the End of the World put our money where our mouths are and get some of this season's guest on the show—Ellie, Austen, TreaAndrea and Roo—together to try and create a story of queer utopia together in the ruins. We talk to Avery about what it's like to make queer games, what community means to her, growing up without tech and making slow connections to people, among many other things in this fantastic conversation. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/queerworlds/support
Emma and Gil chat with Jeeyon Shim, game designer, nature fan, and mushroom enthusiast. Jeeyon's games are about connecting with one's environment, and we discuss what it's like to make games like this. We also discuss playtesting (or not playtesting) indie games, the conception of "nature" and its connection with humanity, and how cute our pets are. SHOW NOTES 1m53s: The IGDN is the Indie Game Developer Network, an organization supporting indie tabletop designers. They offer mentorships and convention scholarships; one of these is to Metatopia, a tabletop game design convention in New Jersey. 4m25s: Jeeyon's games Dear Poppy, First Lesson, Your Dead Friend 8m30s: Daniel Kwan, half of the Asians Represent podcast. 12m09s: Avery Alder's Belonging Outside Belonging and D. Vincent Baker and Meguey Baker's Powered by the Apocalypse (PbtA) are both tabletop RPG "engines" that can be used to make other games. This week, we gush about trans people in tzitzit, discuss environmental justice via wells, and try to determine what the Torah thinks is a good sibling relationship, while this parsha spins us a tale of a very bad sibling relationship. Also, we tell our ancient spiritual ancestors that, while they were definitely hella dramatic, they could have been more creative liars. Also, we wish they had access to therapy. The Psychic Maelstrom brings both terror and understanding as it reveals people's most painful memories to one another. Robyn tries to learn about her future from Pity, but instead learns the high cost of Pity's foresight. Lark tries to extend the kindness the Enclave has shown them to a newcomer, but he needs more help than Lark can give. Fed up with people coming home wounded, Mischa warns the enclave against the dangers of the outside world. And Finch is too excited about having internet access to question the "free gift" Robyn brought back from the market. Robyn convinces Finch to save a stranger, Mischa learns in bloody detail what Shadow's gang did to Lark, and Pity plans to destroy Finch's latest project. And none of them heeds the signs of something far more dangerous than Shadow's gang approaching. This session was organized through the Gauntlet gaming community at https://www.gauntlet-rpg.com. Finch performs boat repair and heart surgery in the same afternoon, and they're still having the easiest day of anyone in the enclave. Lark and gang leader Aadita are attacked by mutant hyenas. Mischa tries to pry her students away from Aadita's influence, but they've already kidnapped a rival gang member. Robyn makes a dangerous bargain with Society Intact. Dream Askew actual play series -- In this session, we meet Pity (João), Robyn (Barry), Finch (Sarah), Lark (Bethany), and Mischa (Ben), and their queer enclave on a flooded tech campus. After a brutal gang attack, Lark is forced to settle down and accept help from their friends -- and face their old flame, Mischa. Robyn reluctantly participates in Mischa's ritual and is less than careful with Finch's belongings. Pity's source of stories is broken, affecting their relationship. And everyone needs Finch to fix something important ASAP. The first half of this session is character and enclave creation. Gameplay starts around 1:21:15. Hey peeps, I hope you're ready for something we've been hinting at for MONTHS. This is the Covingridge Adventuring Party, with Luke, Sunshine, David, Michael and James being run through a very special Jimbles-envisaged world, using Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Rules. This adventure is a different style to Wrath of the Righteous - A greater focus on personal drama, shared history, and the atmosphere of a world left open to the players to discover. All plotlines are made by Jimbles, and made worth listening to by the players. I strongly suggest you check out the Facebook page for this adventure, because we have official character portraits by the talented FalseSecurity and a map by Jimbles, using https://inkarnate.com/. Delve deep into this world, because this is taking the Wrath of the Righteous spot for EIGHT AWESOME SESSIONS. Also note - Avery Alder of Monsterhearts, Ribbon Drive, Dream Askew and The Quiet Year fame is creating an Emerging Designers Mentorship Program. If you want to get into this crazy-creative world, there is no better designer to learn from. Check out their website at https://buriedwithoutceremony.com/mentorship to learn more. If you don't have the time or inclination to be menteed, check out the page anyway, as there are ways to support Avery in this endeavour. Professor Jimbles' Dice Bag is a hobbyist podcast - We create episodes for fun! Please rate and subscribe on iTunes in your favourite app, and tweet your favourite parts to @ProfJimbles on Twitter. If you think anyone would enjoy listening to us, send them a link! If you think we're idiots, tell us so with a 5 star review in iTunes, I promise I'll read them and be sad. Finally, you can always contact Jimbles and the crew on the facebook page: www.facebook.com/ProfessorJimblesDiceBag/ or at ProfessorJimblesDiceBag@gmail.com
