Send us Fan MailFor decades, stories of UFOs, extraterrestrials, and unexplained aerial phenomena have captured the imagination of filmmakers and audiences alike. Inspired by my father's seventeen years working for NASA—and the stories he shared about humanity's enduring fascination with the possibility of life beyond Earth—I take a deep dive into some of cinema's most influential UFO and alien-themed films. In Part One of this two-part series, I explore classics such as THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, E.T. THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, STARMAN, THE THING, THEY LIVE, THE ABYSS, FIRE IN THE SKY, and CONTACT. Rather than debating whether UFOs or extraterrestrials exist, this discussion examines what these films reveal about us: our fears, our hopes, our politics, our faith, and our relationship with authority. From Cold War anxieties and government secrecy to environmental concerns, media manipulation, consumerism, and the search for spiritual meaning, these films often use alien encounters as mirrors reflecting the societies that created them. Join me as I look beyond the flying saucers and little green men to uncover the deeper messages hidden within some of science fiction cinema's most enduring works. The truth may be out there—but the stories we tell about it can reveal just as much about humanity as they do about what might exist beyond the stars.Thank you for listening!

Welcome to Day 2887 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2887 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 136:10-16 Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2887 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2887 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. The Title for Today's Wisdom-Trek is: Shattering the Shackles of the Rebel Gods In our previous episode on this grand, historical journey, we scaled the opening heights of the Great Hallel: Psalm One Hundred Thirty-Six, verses one through nine. We immersed our minds in the grand, cosmic architecture of creation. We stood in the celestial courtroom, and we shouted our praise to the God of gods, and the Lord of lords—the absolute, supreme Sovereign who rules over the entire heavenly host. We saw how His Hesed—His fierce, unyielding, and covenant-keeping faithful love—was the precise engine that skillfully forged the heavens, pinned down the chaotic primordial waters beneath the dry land, and masterfully organized the sun, moon, and stars to govern our days and nights. We learned that the very fabric of physical reality is held together, every single microsecond, by this enduring, loyal affection. Today, the grand temple liturgy takes a dramatic, breathtaking turn. The congregation is still standing in the sunlit courts of Jerusalem, and the antiphonal chant continues to echo off the stone walls. But the focus of the song shifts away from the creation of the cosmos, and steps directly onto the blood-soaked soil of human history. We are exploring Psalm One Hundred Thirty-Six, verses ten through sixteen, in the New Living Translation. The psalmist demonstrates that Yahweh's faithful love is not just an abstract, distant force that manages the stars; it is an active, aggressive, and liberating power that breaks into our physical reality to rescue His people, crush abusive empires, and violently dismantle the rebel spiritual principalities who hold humanity in bondage. Let let us step onto this historic section of the trail, listen to the thunderous roar of the refrain, and watch the Divine Warrior march to war. The first segment is: The Decapitation of the Egyptian Pantheon Psalm One Hundred Thirty-Six: verses ten, eleven, and twelve. Give thanks to him who killed the firstborn of Egypt. His faithful love endures forever. He brought Israel out from among them. His faithful love endures forever. He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm. His faithful love endures forever. The historical narrative explodes into the liturgy with a shocking, deeply unsettling declaration of judgment: “Give thanks to him who killed the firstborn of Egypt. His faithful love endures forever.” To the modern, Western mind, linking the death of the Egyptian firstborn with the phrase “His faithful love endures forever” sounds like a massive, moral contradiction. How can an act of mass fatality be described as an expression of love? To resolve this tension, we must view the Exodus through the profound lens of the Ancient Israelite divine council worldview, as masterfully taught by Doctor Michael S. Heiser. We must look back to the cosmic geography of Deuteronomy, chapter thirty-two, where the nations were disinherited by Yahweh, and handed over to the jurisdiction of lesser spiritual beings—the sons of God. Egypt was the premier, terrifying superpower of the ancient world, operating under the direct, dark inspiration of these corrupt, territorial elohim. Pharaoh was not viewed merely as a human politician; he was worshiped as an incarnate god—the living proxy, and the physical avatar, of the rebel principalities. For four hundred years, under the direction of these dark forces, Egypt systematically crushed, enslaved, and attempted to completely erase Yahweh's personal allotment—the family of Israel. The book of Exodus explicitly states that the plagues were not just a leverage play against human economics; they were an open, aggressive execution of judgment against all the gods of Egypt. When the Lord struck down the firstborn, He was striking the ultimate, legal root of the empire's legacy, and divine claims. The firstborn son represented the strength, the inheritance, and the future succession of the household, and the throne. By taking the firstborn, Yahweh broke the spiritual backbone of the rebel principalities. He proved that the Egyptian gods were entirely impotent, completely unable to protect their own biological, and spiritual, lineages from the superior authority of the Creator. For the oppressed slaves, this act of terrifying justice was the ultimate manifestation of Hesed. Love for the victim requires the decisive execution of justice against the abusive tyrant. The text records the immediate, glorious consequence in verses eleven and twelve: “He brought Israel out from among them... He acted with a strong hand and powerful arm.” The language of the “strong hand and powerful arm” is a direct, deliberate polemic against the royal propaganda of Egypt. Pharaoh's monuments always depicted him with an outstretched arm, crushing his enemies. But the psalmist clears the field, declaring that Pharaoh's arm was easily snapped by the true Divine Warrior. Yahweh reached into the dark, heavily fortified territory of the rebel council, grabbed His treasured possession, and physically wrenched them free from the grip of the superpower. He broke the chains of the empire, proving that no spiritual principality can legally hold a prisoner when the Supreme Commander issues a warrant for their release. The second segment is: Slicing the Abyss and Shaking Off the Tyrant Psalm One Hundred Thirty-Six: verses thirteen, fourteen, and fifteen. Give thanks to him who parted the Red Sea. His faithful love endures forever. He led Israel safely through. His faithful love endures forever. But he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea. His faithful love endures forever. The historical procession moves from the borders of Egypt, directly to the edge of the impossible. “Give thanks to him who parted the Red Sea... He led Israel safely through... But he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.” Once again, the congregation responds to each movement of the narrative with the unyielding, rhythmic drumbeat of faith: “His faithful love endures forever.” To fully appreciate the cosmic drama of this moment, we must understand how the ancient world viewed the geography of the sea. In the biblical and ancient Near Eastern mindset, the deep, wild, and untamed waters of the ocean—known as Yamm—represented the terrifying forces of primordial chaos. The sea was considered a chaotic deity, a dark, churning abyss that swallowed human lives, and actively fought against the ordered creation of the Almighty. When Israel stood trapped between the advancing chariots of Pharaoh, and the roaring waves of the Red Sea, they were caught between the twin jaws of death: the physical might of the empire, and the spiritual chaos of the abyss. But Yahweh executed a masterclass of cosmic subversion. He didn't just build a bridge over the sea; He violently parted the waters. The literal Hebrew text says He sliced the sea into distinct pieces. He drove back the chaotic deep, carved a highway right through the middle of the abyss, and transformed the very realm of death into a dry, safe corridor of life for His covenant family. He led them safely through, insulating them from the walls of water on either side. Then, in verse fifteen, the trap slams shut: “But he hurled Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea.” The Hebrew word for “hurled” is na'ar, which carries the visceral graphic meaning of shaking off a bug, or flipping dirt off your clothes. This is a brilliant, mocking piece of historical sarcasm. Pharaoh had mobilized the entire military industrial complex of the ancient world—hundreds of iron chariots, elite horsemen, and weapons of terror. It was an intimidating display of imperial pride. But to the Creator of the cosmos, this terrifying army was nothing more than an annoying insect crawling on His sleeve. With one effortless flick of His wrist, Yahweh simply shook Pharaoh off into the water. The tyrant who had arrogantly commanded that every Hebrew baby boy be drowned in the Nile river, was himself drowned, along with his entire army, in the very chaos waters that his rebel gods claimed to control. The empire was swallowed by the abyss, completely neutralized, and buried beneath the waves, providing an eternal, undeniable proof that the loyal Hesed

The show combines elements of horror, science fiction, mystery, coming-of-age, and drama. Set in the 1980s, the series centers on the residents of the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, after a young girl with psychokinetic abilities named Eleven inadvertently creates a wormhole known as the Upside Down at a nearby secretive government research facility, connecting Earth to a hostile realm called the Abyss. The ensemble cast includes Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Cara Buono, Matthew Modine, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Dacre Montgomery, Sean Astin, Paul Reiser, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Linda Hamilton, Jamie Campbell Bower, and Nell Fisher. For thousands of years, people have claimed to encounter animal guides that offer wisdom, protection, healing, and spiritual insight. From ancient shamans and spirit guides to modern power animals and New Age practices, these traditions continue to influence millions of people today. But where did these ideas originate?Joel traces the history of familiar spirits, tutelary spirits, ancestral guides, and modern spirit animal teachings while examining their connections to occultism, esoteric societies, and contemporary spirituality. Along the way, he explores the symbolism attached to animals such as the wolf, bear, bat, raven, and dragon, as well as the role these beings play in shamanic journeying and mystical experiences. The conversation also ventures into deeper territory, examining Michael Harner's Core Shamanism, the rise of neoshamanism, the Sirius mysteries, spirit guides, and Aleister Crowley's teachings on ego death, Crossing the Abyss, and the City of the Pyramids. Are spirit animals merely symbolic archetypes? Are they psychological constructs? Are they spiritual entities? And what does Scripture have to say about seeking guidance from unseen spiritual beings?Join Joel as he investigates one of the most popular concepts in modern spirituality through the lens of history, occult traditions, and biblical discernment.Merchandise: https://freetherabbits.myshopify.comBuy Me A Coffee: DonateFollow: Website | Instagram | X | FacebookWatch: YouTube | RumbleMusic: YouTube | Spotify | Apple Music Films: https://merkelfilms.com Email: freetherabbitspodcast@gmail.comDistributed by: merkel.mediaIntro Music:Joel Thomas – Free The RabbitsYouTube | Spotify | Apple MusicOutro Music:Joel Thomas – GreyYouTube | Spotify | Apple MusicTopics DiscussedSpirit Animals, Power Animals, Totem Animals, Familiar Spirits, Spirit Guides, Shamanism, Neoshamanism, Animism, Michael Harner, Carlos Castaneda, Mircea Eliade, Native Traditions, Dog Star Sirius, Dogon Tribe, Freemasonry and Sirius, The Blazing Star, Occult Symbolism, Animal Totems, Wolf Symbolism, Bear Symbolism, Bat Symbolism, Dragon Symbolism, Raven Symbolism, Sheep Symbolism, Turkey Symbolism, Ladybug Symbolism, Ancestor Spirits, Tutelary Spirits, Familiars in European Folklore, Spirit Journeys, Vision Quests, Dreams and Spirit Animals, Aleister Crowley, Crossing the Abyss, Choronzon, Babalon, City of the Pyramids, Ego Dissolution, Biblical Discernment.

Ian Hunter has spent four decades building miniatures, supervising visual effects and thinking like a filmmaker on some of the most demanding productions in Hollywood. In this episode, he traces a career that began in a garden shed with a punched-up piece of German black velvet and ended up — via James Cameron, Tim Burton, the Coen Brothers, and Christopher Nolan — on some of the most iconic screens in the world.Ian grew up surrounded by art. His father painted oils and acrylics, played music and did pastel portraits, and encouraged his three sons to make things — even when those things destroyed the materials he'd given them. The moment that really clicked, Ian recalls, was being handed a model kit as a kid and taking to it immediately. That creative instinct only grew stronger. In high school, he and his brothers were making Super 8 films, scratching laser effects onto the film with a pin and blowing up overloaded resistors for explosions. One of those films required them to fake-rob a local bank — and the encounter that followed, with the surprisingly enthusiastic vice president of the Monrovia Wells Fargo, led to a meeting with the mother of Rick Baker, whose work Ian had recently encountered in a traveling special effects exhibition and been completely floored by.After drifting away from an aerospace course at Cal Poly Pomona and working in an acid bath plastics factory, Ian answered a classified ad looking for model makers — and on the strength of a modest portfolio, was hired the same day. His first feature was The Abyss. He and fellow model maker Jim McGee built the flooded engine room of the Montana submarine with almost no direction beyond James Cameron's bare-bones description, and shipped it to South Carolina having never seen a frame of the live action. The production was not without its disasters — Ian found himself entangled in the notorious wax crane fiasco, and talks about the valuable early lesson of knowing when to call something out before it goes wrong. From there, a friend pointed him toward Boss Film, Richard Edlund's company in Marina del Rey, where a chance encounter with departing model supervisor Mark Stetson changed everything. What was supposed to be a one-week favour on a music video turned into six years. Working with Stetson took Ian from being a junior model maker building things in isolation to visiting sets, talking directly with directors, and understanding that miniature work only succeeds when it becomes invisible — just more shots in a movie, telling the story rather than showing off the technique.Among the projects from that period, Ian talks at length about Total Recall — including the behind-the-scenes chaos of a scale miscommunication on the final day of shooting, a scene involving a little person that nobody had accounted for, and the moment he glued a Coke can to a model building because they were running out of time. That Coke can, dressed up and shot from the front, made it into the finished film. So did one in Waterworld. And Inception. And Interstellar. And, after the story apparently got around, director Fede Álvarez greeted Ian on Alien: Romulus by asking exactly where he was planning to hide it.Ian built the suburb for Edward Scissorhands — deliberately making it more bland and mundane than real life — and talks about one of his proudest in-camera shots: the final view through the bedroom window and out over the snow-dusted neighbourhood, achieved with a 1:24 scale model and real snow shakers on the night. On Batman Returns he built the Penguin's zoo, and describes receiving one of his all-time favourite compliments from Tim Burton — who, after watching a pyrotechnics test, asked simply: "Where did you shoot this?" Not realising he was looking at a miniature. The zoo also gave Ian one of his best examples of a happy accident: a polar bear sculpture that was supposed to explode but instead toppled slowly sideways with flames coming out of its feet. Tim Burton loved it. The entire subsequent engineering challenge was figuring out how to recreate the mistake. On the X-Files movie, Ian and his partner Matthew Gratzner built a collapsing federal building on a tight budget, referencing Oklahoma City bombing photographs for the detail of damaged concrete and exposed floors. The late Roger Ebert reviewed the finished film and said the sequence should have been cut — because it was too reminiscent of real tragedy. Ian reflects on that as a marker: they'd gotten past the technique and into the emotion. The conversation turns to Christopher Nolan, with whom Ian has worked across multiple films. Ian describes Nolan as collaborative but definitive, someone who discusses a shot in depth and then tells you exactly what he wants. He talks about the liberation Nolan offered on Interstellar when he told the crew to stop following the previs — pre-vis is just a guy at a computer on a Friday trying to get the shot out the door, Nolan told them; if you can see a better angle, do that instead. The result was that the miniature crew started shooting faster, and a number of shots that had been planned as digital moved across to the physical side. Ian also describes the meticulous sun-angle calculation that went into matching the Inception hospital sequence — setting up models in a parking lot at a precisely calculated skewed angle to hit the exact quality of light that had been captured in Calgary on a specific date.On First Man with Damien Chazelle, Ian had drawn storyboards before the first meeting proposing a documentary approach — cameras attached to the spacecraft, nothing sweeping or cinematic, everything either very close or very wide as if shot from another ship. Chazelle walked in and described exactly the same idea. They spent twenty minutes together going through the sequence, working to an animatic cut to music, and Ian went off and shot it. That shorthand — that moment of being in sync before the conversation has really started — is something Ian describes as central to how he has survived in an industry where so many practical effects houses have not. He's a model maker, yes. But more than that, he's a filmmaker. This podcast is completely independent and made possible by listener support. BENEATH THE WAVES ROILS A MURKY STEW OF KILLER ALIENS, MONSTROUS MUTANTS, PSYCHOTIC SOLDIERS, AND EVIL CORPORATIONS!! Welcome to another of Genre Grinder's patented deep(sea)-dives into a single year in cinema when a specific genre fad peaked. This time, Gabe and Patrick Ripoll are looking at a strange moment in time, the year 1989, when seven different undersea sci-fi/horror/adventures were released*. How did this happen? Your intrepid podcasters will attempt to answer that and other questions in this very damp two-part special episode. Part one covers the three studio releases: James Cameron's The Abyss, Sean S. Cunningham's DeepStar Six, and George P. Cosmatos' Leviathan. Part two will feature the B-to-Z-grade examples: Mary Ann Fisher's Lords of the Deep, Antonio Margheriti's Alien of the Deep (Italian: Alien degli abissi), Jean-Claude Dubois & Wayne Crawford's The Evil Below, and Juan Piquer Simón's The Rift (Spanish: La grieta). * Technically six, but we'll get into that in part two. 00:00 – Intro: An Abridged History of Underwater Science Fiction and the Impact of Alien & Aliens 20:04 – The Abyss 1:07:53 – DeepStar Six 1:45:38 – Leviathan 2:17:44 – Outro
Eden makes Peter watch the 1994–95 OVA You're Under Arrest, a four-episode anime about two traffic cops in Tokyo. Peter goes in skeptical but comes out admitting it was fun, charming, and visually stunning. The siblings unpack what makes 90s hand-drawn animation special, how the direct-to-video OVA format enabled lavish production values, and why the 2017 revival is a cautionary tale in digital downgrades. Plus: Peter wraps up Dungeon Crawler Carl book 8, Eden makes a pilgrimage to giant troll sculptures in Iowa, a hotel bed that doesn't suck, and Peter's genuine enthusiasm for the new I Built the Sky album.Show NotesYou're Under Arrest OVA (1994–95): A four-episode direct-to-video anime about traffic cops Natsumi Tsujimoto and Miyuki Kobayakawa at Bokuto Station in Tokyo. Despite the title, zero arrests occur across all four episodes — the show is closer to a workplace slice-of-life comedy. Created by Kōsuke Fujishima. The OVA format explained: Original Video Animation — direct-to-video releases that bypassed broadcast TV. In the 90s, OVAs were often more lavish than TV anime because VHS tapes sold for $40–$70 per episode, guaranteeing ROI. OVAs also had fewer content restrictions than broadcast — though You're Under Arrest stays remarkably tame.Kōsuke Fujishima's broader work: Beyond You're Under Arrest, Fujishima created Oh My Goddess! and served as lead character designer for multiple Tales games, including Tales of Phantasia, Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, and Berseria. The infamous "silly goose" meme: Eden discovered that a reaction image she's been seeing online for 20 years — a character sticking out her tongue with hands on her head — originates from You're Under Arrest (character Yoriko in episode 3).English dub vs. subtitles: Peter found the English dub surprisingly good — the dialogue was looser and more entertaining than the literal subtitle translations. Eden watched subbed. Peter says the dub actually improved the experience for a light show like this. The 2017 revival: Eden showed Peter the opening to the 2017 You're Under Arrest series — cheap digital animation, worse music, and gratuitous bikini volleyball shots. A textbook example of how 90s hand-drawn cel animation aged better than early digipaint.Dungeon Crawler Carl Book 8: A Parade of Horribles: Peter finished it. Covers floors 10 and 11 — down to 23 crawlers alive from an initial ~2 million. Bleak but sets up the final book. Peter's verdict: good, but he mainlined too many DCC books in a row and needs a break.Anji Kills a King by Evan Leikam: Peter's next read — a debut fantasy novel from a book influencer he follows. A one-off palate cleanser before diving into Discworld.Forza Horizon 6: Set in Japan, released May 2026. Peter earned his legendary gold wristband. Won the Titan (14.4-mile cross-country race) in a Koenigsegg but hasn't cracked the 54-mile Goliath loop yet.I Built the Sky — Promise Me You'll Thrive: Solo guitarist Rohan Stevenson's latest. Instrumental, joyful, heavy in places. Peter's been listening on repeat since it came out and calls it "next level" — it made him love guitar-centric instrumental music again.Evergrey — Architects of a New Weave: The Swedish progressive metal band's 15th album, out June 5, 2026 via Napalm Records. Peter describes them as melancholy progressive power metal — never cheesy. Tom Englund's voice "could sing the Hallelujah chorus and you'd still be like, this is so sad."Godthrymm — Projections (2026): British doom metal, third album via Profound Lore. Pulls from the My Dying Bride vein — former MDB vocalist Aaron Stainthorpe guests on a track. (Peter refers to their 2020 debut Reflections and 2023 follow-up Distortions.)The Apothecary Diaries Vol. 16: Eden devoured it in a day and a half. Their endorsement: "You want something fun and simple and light and still intriguing? Apothecary Diaries is it."Thomas Dambo trolls in Clinton, Iowa: Danish artist Thomas Dambo builds giant recycled-material troll sculptures worldwide. Clinton has three prominent trolls plus a fourth hidden in a park — the extra one exists because locals were so helpful Dambo had spare time.Moxy Hotels: Marriott's quirky sub-brand. No check-in counter — the bartender handles it with a complimentary drink. Rooms include a guitar and amp. Bedtime stories available by phone. Eden declares the bed the most comfortable hotel bed they've ever slept in.The Lodi Pencil Sharpening: The 5th annual sharpening of a giant pencil at Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis. Happened Saturday, June 6, 2026. Eden and Cassi attended for the second year.PowerWash Simulator 2: Eden's catharsis game of choice. Currently 71% through a very large barn. The Batman (2022): Eden rewatched it at the hotel. Still great, still too long — three hours, with "a whole fifth act that didn't need to be there." Cassi fell asleep. The bed was comfortable, so it balanced out.

Co-hosts Jared Yates Sexton and Nick Hauselman unpack a crucial day of reckoning as Iran officially ends negotiations with the United States. With fuel reserves dwindling and the Strait of Hormuz facing a total shutdown, the inevitable energy and economic crises are poised to deepen. Jared shares insights from a recent security briefing regarding Iran's long-term strategy, backed by China, while Nick analyzes the regional chess moves involving Israel and Lebanon. The duo also pushes back on Donald Trump's latest Truth Social claims regarding his supposed phone calls with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hezbollah. The conversation then shifts north to a troubling report from the Global Center for Democratic Resilience. The intelligence reveals that American and Russian influencers are actively collaborating to fuel the separatist debate in Alberta, Canada. Jared and Nick break down how this state-organized crime operates on the margins, drawing historical parallels to the annexation of Texas and Vladimir Putin's use of green little men. Finally, they audit the Democratic Party's newly unveiled Project 2029 platform. From corporate utility monopolies to the annoyance economy, they question why vital working-class issues like billionaire taxation, anti-corruption, and reproductive rights are completely missing from the plan. They close the episode navigating the messy landscape of modern political scandals, including the latest allegations against Maine senate candidate Graham Platner.
Welcome to Day 2874 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom. Day 2874 – “Freedom From Bondage” based on Luke 8:22-39 Putnam Church Message – 05/03/2026 The Good News According to Luke: “Freedom from Bondage” Last week's message was: “Where Are You in This Picture?” We reflected on what type of soil our lives represent and whether we are hiding the light of Christ rather than sharing it with others. Today, we continue with our twenty-first message from Luke's narrative of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Today's message is: “Freedom from Bondage.” Our core passage today is Luke 8:22-39, which is found on page 1606 of your pew Bibles. Jesus Calms the Storm 22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger. 24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we're going to drown!” He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[a] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don't torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places. 30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” “Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss. 32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus' feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. Opening Prayer Heavenly Father, thank You for Your living Word and for the Gospel of Luke, which continues to show us more clearly who Jesus is. Thank You that You did not leave this fallen world to sink under the weight of sin, fear, and evil, but You sent Your Son into our darkness. As we come to this passage today, open our eyes to the power of Christ, open our hearts to trust Him more fully, and open our lives to the freedom only He can give. Calm what is storming within us. Break what has held us captive. Strengthen what has grown weak. And let us leave today with a deeper confidence that Jesus is Lord over every force that terrifies us. In His name we pray, amen. As we continue with our twenty-first message in this Luke series, we come to a dramatic turning point. Up to this point, Luke has shown Jesus healing diseases, cleansing lepers, forgiving sins, raising the dead, and receiving the broken. We have watched Him touch individual lives with compassion and power. But in Luke 8:22–39, the curtain pulls back even farther. Here, Jesus does not merely ease suffering. / He confronts the larger powers behind suffering. / He speaks to the wind and the waves. / He commands demons. / He crosses into hostile territory. / He delivers a man no one else could help. / And then He sends that healed man home as a witness. This is not just a story about weather and one troubled man. This is a revelation of the King who has come to reclaim enemy-held ground. The world we live in is not the world God originally made it to be. Genesis tells us that God created a good world, ordered, fruitful, beautiful, and fit for human flourishing. But because of sin, our world has become a place of storms, sorrow, chaos, fear, bondage, disease, death, and decay. We all know this, not just from theology, but from experience. We have all ridden through storms. We have all seen chaos. We have all known people in bondage. And if we are honest, some of us know bondage from the inside. So, this passage asks us a very important question: When the forces of chaos and darkness rise, who is Jesus really? Luke's answer is clear: He is Lord over the storm. He is Lord over the demons. He is Lord over the broken human heart. And He is Lord over the mission that turns the delivered / into witnesses. A Simple Object Lesson Hold up a small chain connected to a padlock and a set of keys. “This is what bondage looks like. Sometimes it is visible, sometimes invisible. Sometimes it is addiction. Sometimes fear. Sometimes bitterness. Sometimes shame. Sometimes torment of mind.” Hold up the keys and say, “Chains are strong, but keys represent authority. The chain may look powerful, but the one with the key has the final word.” Luke 8 shows us a man whom everyone else tried to bind with chains. Those chains failed. But when Jesus arrived, no chain, no demon, no storm, and no chaos could stand against Him. Christ has the key. That leads us to our first of four truths. Main Point 1: Jesus has authority over the chaos that terrifies us. Luke tells us that Jesus said to His disciples, “Let's cross to the other side of the lake.” So, they got into a boat and set out. Then, as they sailed, Jesus fell asleep. A fierce storm came down on the lake. The boat began to fill with water. The disciples panicked and woke Him, crying, “Master, Master, we're going to drown!” Now pause there and feel the scene. These were not children afraid of a little rain. / Several of these men were seasoned fishermen. / They knew this lake. / They had read the sky before. They had handled boats before. But the Sea of Galilee could turn violent in moments. Sitting far below sea level, surrounded by hills, and cut by sudden winds, it could quickly become dangerous. Ancient people often saw the sea not merely as water, but as a symbol of disorder and threat. To them, the sea represented what could not be controlled. The mighty sea serpent. So, when experienced men panic, this was no small inconvenience. And where is Jesus? / Asleep. That detail matters. It reveals both His humanity and His calm. He is weary enough to sleep through danger, and secure enough to rest in the middle of it. Then Jesus rises and rebukes the wind and the raging waves. Immediately, the storm stops, and the lake becomes calm. What a moment that must have been. One instant: shrieking wind, crashing water, frantic bailing, shouted voices, terror in the eyes. The next instant: stillness. Silence. Water settling. Hearts pounding. The disciples staring at Jesus in stunned fear and wonder. And then Jesus asks, “Where is your faith?” / Not, “Why were there waves?” / Not, “Why were you surprised that life got hard?” / But, “Where is your faith?” This passage does not teach that real...

How did Nikoli plan for our escapees returning from the labyrinth? Would they confron Vizerin? We present ARCHIVE! A companion series where Nikoli & Amy sit down and discuss the DM notes for each episode of Abyss as it happens. This will include recaps of the previous Abyss episode, Nikoli's outline for the next episode and some details of how this compares to what the source material originally planned. Hopefully Archive will satisfy the "behind the scenes" cravings we know some fans have for our DM notes and reasoning behind what we changed and why.
