Jesus casts a legion of demons out of a man who was exiled from society. Now the townspeople are no longer afraid of the formerly possessed man, they're terrified of Jesus. We ask Lars Olson: Why do the demons ask Jesus for permission to enter the pigs? Why does Jesus grant the demons' request? And why are the people so afraid of Jesus? Lars teaches us that God wants us to fear Him above all else. Why? Because what we fear has all of our attention. CARE OF SOULS - ADDICTIONIn Care of Souls, a special mini-series podcast from Luther House of Study, Lutheran pastors and theologians come together to explore the deeply personal and pastoral task of preaching to and caring for those struggling with life's challenging situations: addiction, death, family disharmony, and more. Rooted in the theology of the cross and the Lutheran tradition of radical grace, this series offers both theological depth and practical guidance for pastors, church workers, and lay leaders. With conversations, real-life stories, and reflections from the front lines of ministry, Care of Souls equips listeners to enter the broken places of addiction not with easy answers, but with the crucified and risen Christ. Because in the end, it's not about fixing people—it's about preaching the Gospel. Listen to Care of Souls wherever you listen to podcasts or on the Luther House website: Care of Souls - Addiction GOSPEL Luke 8:26-39 26 Then they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 As he stepped out on land, a man of the city who had demons met him. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he did not live in a house but in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he fell down before him and shouted at the top of his voice, "What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me" -- 29 for Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many times it had seized him; he was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the wilds.) 30 Jesus then asked him, "What is your name?" He said, "Legion"; for many demons had entered him. 31 They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss. 32 Now there on the hillside a large herd of swine was feeding; and the demons begged Jesus to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. 33 Then the demons came out of the man and entered the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned. 34 When the swineherds saw what had happened, they ran off and told it in the city and in the country. 35 Then people came out to see what had happened, and when they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told them how the one who had been possessed by demons had been healed. 37 Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them; for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned. 38 The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you." So he went away, proclaiming throughout the city how much Jesus had done for him. Around the edges of the reality easily perceived by men seems to lurk another- A world home to entities and intelligences for which we have many names but little understanding. Reports passed down throughout history catalog a menagerie of angels, alien beings, shadowmen, sentient lights, demons, and disembodied voices who walk and stalk the plains of this alternate plane, sometimes stumbling over the borders which separate us from them and making their way into our own. One alleged diabolic denizen of the nether is said to invoke such a sense of dread and terror into those who have witnessed him that even uttering the simple moniker by which he is most known can reignite the feelings of horror long after the initial encounter has passed- The Hatman. Tonight on the return of MIKs firsthand testimonial series, Transmissions from the Abyss, we'll hear from our very own Jamie Lee on her recurring encounters with the ominous entity himself and just how his appearance has left a lasting impact on her life and her perceptions of the unknown. In the intro to this episode we'll also briefly touch on our own personal recent encounters of mysterious unmarked black helicopters and just how these events and others seem to indicate an ongoing communication with something larger than ourselves.MIK theme by B. Interview by Kris PetersThe Funeral Portrait have always been true champions for the underdog; the outcasts of society who are struggling to find their identity or be accepted in a world that is often harsh and judgmental.Their musical world is one of acceptance and unequivocal belonging, with a flair for the theatrical and a need for unity. In little over a decade, The Funeral Portrait have steadily ploughed through the ranks, loudly going about their business with an air of defiant arrogance that only comes from a band who know they have something special.Since joining forces with Better Noise Music for last year's smash hit album Greetings From Suffocate City, The Funeral Portrait have become one of the most in-demand bands on the planet, touring with Ice Nine Kills, Five Finger Death Punch, Marilyn Manson and more to solidify their obvious potential. The campaign cycle for that album began long before its release, with attention to even the smallest details providing a solid platform from which the band launched their global assault.Greetings From Suffocate City expanded the group's mythology to new heights and dimensions with invigorating, authentic, and passionate anthems. Songs like Alien, Voodoo Doll, You're So Ugly When You Cry (featuring The Used's Bert McCracken), and the title track (featuring Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills) have forced the world to stand up and notice, culminating in the release on June 13 of GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY - FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS: DELUXE EDITION. The updated release contains 24 songs, including tracks from the CASSANOVA EP and the FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS EP, as well as the recently released versions of Holy Water feat. Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, Hearse for Two feat. Lilith Czar and three brand new songs: Skinny Lies, Evergreen, and Lost Boy.The album that was originally released September 13, 2024 via Better Noise Music, consisted of 14 tracks of theatrical, dramatic, unapologetic, full-throated flair with guest appearances from Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria and Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire. It was - and is - a remarkable album from a band only now starting to find their musical identity, and looks set to reach a new generation of ears with the deluxe edition on offer this week.HEAVY caught up with frontman Lee Jennings on one of his rare down days to force him to talk shop. We ask him about the response to Greetings From Suffocate City and if it was what they were hoping for."Completely, yes," he nodded. "I think at first we had been building fans along the way. So it was definitely a cool stretch at the beginning. But I think the better part is what we're building now. We're still supporting some huge tours, and it's growing every single day. Every day, we're selling copies at the merch table or online. You can go to your local record store a lot of the time and get it. And for us, it's about that growth. It's not about that direct, right when it's out, everybody's freaking out about it. To me, it's about the build. And I feel like what we're building towards is this next record that I hope that will be more that moment of like, oh, the new Funeral Portrait record is coming out. I'm very excited for that instead of right now. We're in discovery mode still now, I think, is the easiest way to say."In the full interview, Lee discussed the upcoming release of the deluxe edition of Greetings From Suffocate City - scheduled for June 13 - reflecting on the five-year journey of creating the original album, which was impacted by the pandemic and other factors. Lee expressed enthusiasm for the new songs on the deluxe edition, particularly Skinny Lies and Evergreen, which tackle personal themes and mental health, and explained the inclusion of both original and guest versions of certain tracks to showcase the band's creative evolution. We also explored the role of guest features in modern rock music, with Lee open to collaborations across genres, emphasizing a process that allows guest artists to contribute while maintaining the song's essence. We spoke about The Funeral Portrait's touring schedule, how they integrate the new songs into live performances, and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

More than just a writer, more than just a science-fiction icon, Benjamin J. Carp was a cultural revolutionary. Across 44 novels and hundreds of short stories-including the counterculture classic The Man They Couldn't Erase-Carp pushed the boundaries of literary respectability for the sci-fi genre and his readers' perception of reality itself . . . until decades of amphetamine abuse and Southern California excess finally ended a mind-bending career that always just escaped mainstream success. He died in 1982. Until 2025 . . . when Benjamin J. Carp awakens, alive, in a burned-out motel on the fringes of Los Angeles. He remembers dying. He knows he shouldn't exist. Is he a dream? A robot? A ghost? A clone? A simulation? In his own time, Carp pondered all of these scenarios intensely through his fiction-and, now, as he treks from Studio City to Venice Beach and onward into the paranoid sprawl of 21st-century Los Angeles, he will be called to investigate his greatest mystery yet: himself. In the tradition of Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly and Thomas Pynchon's Inherent Vice comes a uniquely fascinating and hilariously deranged excursion into the metatextual nexus where existence and oblivion, past and future, genius and madness, and glitter and grim reality all meet just beyond Hollywood Boulevard . . . [rating: 3/5] DISCUSSION PEANUTS 1950 Writer/Artist: Charles Schulz This first volume, covering the first two and a quarter years of the strip, will be of particular fascination toPeanuts aficionados worldwide: Although there have been literally hundreds of Peanuts books published, many of the strips from the series' first two or three years have never been collected before―in large part because they showed a young Schulz working out the kinks in his new strip and include some characterizations and designs that are quite different from the cast we're all familiar with. (Among other things, three major cast members―Schroeder, Lucy, and Linus―initially show up as infants and only "grow" into their final "mature" selves as the months go by. Even Snoopy debuts as a puppy!) Thus The Complete Peanuts offers a unique chance to see a master of the art form refine his skills and solidify his universe, day by day, week by week, month by month. Continuing our dive into James Cameron, we cover The Abyss (1989). Notoriously known as one of the most difficult and dangerous movies ever made, The Abyss follows Bud Brigman (Ed Harris), a civilian deep-see engineer and his crew as they make a dangerous journey to recover a nuclear submarine. Nearly half of the movie is shot underwater, using specialized diving equipment for the crew and cast. Ed Harris was so traumatized by the experience that he refused to talk about the making of the film for many years. One of the unofficial names of the film given by a crewmember is: "Life's Abyss And Then You Dive". Cinema Spectator is a movie podcast hosted by Isaac Ransom, Juzo Greenwood, and Cameron Tuttle. Episode 381 – Summer Game Fest Things, Night Springs, and Big SwingsFred's back in the spooky saddle after diving into the Alan Wake II DLCs—he's completed Night Springs and has just cracked open The Lakehouse. Meanwhile, Jake rolled credits on Expedition 33 and while the ending didn't totally land for him, the journey was strong enough to make it one of his recent favorites. He also dipped into Doom: The Dark Ages, because of course he did. This week, we take a deep breath and unpack Summer Game Fest 2025. From the hype around sequels like Resident Evil: Requiem and Atomic Heart 2, to the weirdly compelling ILL and Reddit darling Stranger Than Heaven, the show had a little something for everyone—or maybe too much of everything. We talk about the odd bait-and-switch with Capcom's teaser, how ILL might be more tech demo than game, and whether Atomic Heart really needed a multiplayer spin-off called The Cube.We also take stock of upcoming DLCs (Lies of P: Overture, 007: First Light), roster updates (Street Fighter 6), and stylish indies like Mixtape, Blighted, End of Abyss, and Scott Pilgrim EX. Some reveals had us curious—like Onimusha Way of the Sword and Jurassic World Evolution 3—while others, like Sonic Racing: Crosswinds and the Marvel DLC, barely got a shrug. Then it's on to the PS5 flood that came from the Xbox Showcase of all places—Persona 4 Remake, The Outer Worlds 2, Gears of War Reloaded, Ninja Gaiden 4, Final Fantasy Tactics Remaster, Metal Gear Solid Delta, and 007 First Light all made strong showings. Sprinkle in Astro Bot, Thief VR, and a few curveballs like PAC-MAN in Hot Shots Golf and you've got a showcase that left us wondering if Xbox accidentally threw a better PS event than Sony's recent State of Play (Which we also discuss)We wrap things up with the latest releases, including the Alien Hominid double drop, MindsEye finally hitting shelves, and newcomers like The Alters, Wizard of Legend 2, and Zombie Army VR shaking things up. Whether you're into body horror, magical roguelites, or cloning alternate versions of yourself to survive, it's a packed week.Let's get into it.By joining our Patreon community for ONLY $1.00 per month, you'll also enjoy these exclusive benefits:Early Access: Be the first to listen to our episodes as soon as they're ready. Signs of a softening for-sale home market are making some worry about a larger economic downturn, and apartment rent growth has faltered, growing less this year than in the past. That being said, apartment market performance varies considerably from region to region. Midwest and Northeast markets have rent growth close to 3-3.5%, while the South and West are less than 1% (and sometimes negative). Apartment construction trends point to a more balanced market as 2025 moves into 2026, but higher supply markets may take longer to get to this equilibrium.Sources discussed in this episode:GlobeSt: “Experts Warn Housing Could Be the Tipping Point for the Next Recession” - https://www.globest.com/2025/05/28/experts-warn-housing-could-be-the-tipping-point-for-the-next-recession/Cotality: "US home price insights — June 2025” - https://www.cotality.com/insights/articles/us-home-price-insights-june-2025Apartment List: “May 2025 National Rent Report” - https://www.apartmentlist.com/research/national-rent-dataColliers: “Path to Performance: Fundamentals Strengthen in 2025 - Multifamily Capital Markets Report” - https://www.colliers.com/en/research/nrep-uscm-usmf-colliers-capital-markets-multifamily-report-2025Learn more about Gray Capital's Midwest Multifamily Fund: https://www.graycapitalllc.com/midwestDownload Gray Capital's latest report: https://www.graycapitalllc.com/midwest-report/Sign up for our free multifamily newsletter here: https://www.graycapitalllc.com/newsletter DISCLAIMERS: This video does not constitute professional financial advice and is for educational/entertainment purposes only. The Greater Portland Crab Caper-The Crabbe Family: Eastern Prom's Enduring Legacy & The Fisher Family: Western Prom's Steadfast Guardians (Updated)Today, we're deepening the lore around the Crabbe and Fisher families, intertwining their distinct identities with the historical fabric of Portland, particularly through the lens of the Munjoy Hill and Bramhall Reservoirs and their ultimate demise. This will lay the groundwork for the central conflict, "The Crab Caper."Family Name & Symbolism: "The Crab Caper"The name "Crabbe" perfectly embodies their essence. The crab, with its hard shell and sideways movement, symbolizes their tenacity, their guarded nature, and perhaps an ethical ambiguity. Their deep connection to the marine world is undeniable, but it's a connection born of exploitation rather than stewardship.Location: The Eastern Promenade, Munjoy HillTheir placement on Munjoy Hill, the "other side" of the city from the Fishers, immediately establishes a geographical and ideological divide. The Eastern Prom's history of hardworking families, fishermen, and shipbuilders provides a rugged, insular backdrop, contrasting sharply with the Western Prom's perceived grandeur. This is where the Crabbes forged their empire through sheer will and cunning.Marine Industry Focus:Initial Wealth: Modern Business: Today, their legacy manifests in a highly efficient, perhaps legally dubious, commercial fishing conglomerate or a marine logistics company. Their shadowy ties to modern shipping lanes and even offshore wind development hint at how their less-than-ethical practices continue to give them an advantage in contemporary ventures. They are the silent operators, the ones who know how to bend rules and exploit loopholes.Personality & Traits (Antagonists):Ruthless & Ambitious: Their primary drivers are profit and power. They are fiercely territorial, protecting their family name and their dominion over the Eastern Prom with an iron fist.Secretive: Like the hidden depths of the Munjoy Hill Reservoir, the Crabbe family harbors deep, unspoken secrets. These secrets are intrinsically tied to their past, perhaps involving illicit gains from the 1893 reservoir burst, or shady deals made during times of public vulnerability. This secrecy is a key element of their enduring power.Old Money, but "Newer" Grit: Potential Link to Munjoy Hill Reservoir & Hidden Network:The Munjoy Hill Reservoir, built in the 1880s, tragically burst in 1893. An ancestor of the Crabbes could have been deeply involved in the subsequent repairs or even benefited from the disaster itself, perhaps through illicit profits or opportunistic land acquisition. This established their connection to the Eastern Prom's infrastructure.Family Name & Symbolism:The name "Fisher" immediately evokes tradition, sustainability, and an ethical approach to the ocean. It represents integrity, patience, and a deep, respectful connection to the sea, contrasting sharply with the Crabbes' exploitative nature. They are the guardians of Portland's maritime soul.Location: The Western PromenadeTheir residence on the Western Promenade positions them among Portland's older, more established families. Their connections trace back to the city's early mercantile and shipping elite, with grand, historic houses overlooking the harbor, symbolizing their long-standing, respected presence.#TheFishers,#WesternPromHeroes,#PortlandProtagonists,#MaritimeHeritage,#EthicalSeafood,#GrandpaBillsGoodGuys#GuardiansOfTheBay,#FisherMansionSecrets,#UncoveringPortland,#SubterraneanQuest,#BramhallUnveiled,The Crabbe Family: Eastern Prom's Enduring LegacyThe Fisher Family: Western Prom's Steadfast GuardiansThe Rivalry: A Tale of Two Sides of PortlandTitles & Hashtags for the Families & Rivalry
Episode 21 — Life Beyond Porn — The Pearl to be Snatched from the Murky Abyss____________________________________________________Every mindful man eventually faces this question: how do we navigate our relationship with sexuality in a world saturated with pornographic imagery? If you want to feel masterful with your sexual impulses and desires, porn is a universe, a likely addiction, with which you must grapple. There's no getting away from it. It's archetypal:Turns out both Zan and I found a trolley-stash of adult magazines in the woods where we lived as kids. Imagine: eleven years old, that first look. The beauty of women… in all its naked forms!Perhaps you still feel the original delight of it to this day. That sense of discovery and awe!But as the years pass, our relationship to porn typically darkens. And most men, desiring a more conscious path through life, realize they must leave the images, the videos, behind. In fact the consensus in good men's work today is that pornography is wholly negative—a work of the devil!—and that we must rid ourselves of such habits as quick as we can. But within this blanket judgment, is there a soul of porn, a pearl, a gift, that might get left behind?A trace of that original mischief? A key to our libido and vitality?Anti-venom for our sexual shame? Before throwing out the baby with the bathwater, Zan and I explore some nuanced views about porn—including what we've discovered about reclaiming the erotic imagination beyond the screen. This is a topic we've never explored in public before. You'll walk away with fresh perspectives on how to navigate the worlds of sexual imagery.Enjoy the show.~ Jordan____________________________________________________Come join us! San Fruttuoso Abbey is nestled in a cove off Italy’s northwest coast. Accessible only by boat or foot, it’s a secluded gem. But even more treasure hides in its bay. As divers venture into the sea and descend fifty feet down, the figure of a man starts coming into view. This is Christ of the Abyss, the world’s first underwater statue, placed in 1954. The bronze figure depicts Jesus in the depths, His hands raised to heaven. The depths. Maybe you’ve experienced them. “I sink in the miry depths,” Psalm 69 says, “I am worn out calling for help” (vv. 2–3). Mocked by his foes and estranged from his family (vv. 4, 7–12), the psalmist found no comfort in others (v. 20) and feared his misery would “swallow” him up (v. 15). Whether it’s sin or sadness that takes us there, the depths are life’s moments of dark despair. Thankfully, this isn’t the last word on the depths. For while they’re cold and lonely, there is One who can be found in them (139:8). And He will rescue us from their chill waters. “I will exalt you, Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths” (30:1). As that sculpture reminds us, when we’re sinking under the world’s weight, we’re not alone. Jesus by the Spirit is there in the depths, His hands raised high—ready to meet us and lift us out in time.

Let's talk about... the kids! Could we think of the Millennial Reign of Christ as a kind of experiment, or demonstration? We begin the test-period with all good subjects. No sinners; none of Satan's breed allowed. And no Satan, either - he's locked up in the Abyss. After a thousand years of peace, prosperity and maximized human potential, how is the devil (now released) going to fool anyone? It's about the kids. It's iFanboy 20/25 -- 20 years of podcasting and 25 years of iFanboy! They backed up the comics truck and dumped them all on our front steps. We dug our way out, made a list, and we're here to talk about it. And no, you haven't heard too much about this book, because there's more to say. Then more reminiscing, and quite a Civil War book diversion. Note: Time codes are estimates due to dynamic ad insertion by the distributor. THE REBEL WATCHERS of the Book of 1 Enoch were described as “burning mountains” in a chasm so vast there was no end to the height or the depth. These were identified by the archangel Uriel as “the angels who mingled with the women,” who will remain there until the final judgment. This is consistent with the description of the sinful angels who are “kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day” (Jude 6). We discuss other biblical references to angels as mountains and “stones of fire,” as in Ezekiel 28:14. The father-god of Mesopotamia, called Enlil, Dagan (Dagon), Assur, and El depending on location, was called “Great Mountain,” and his temples in Babylon and Assyria were called “House of the Mountain.” We think this is the “great mountain” in Zechariah 4:7, and the custom of calling angels burning mountains suggests that the “great mountain, burning with fire,” the second trumpet judgment of Revelation 8:8, is an angelic being, not a space rock. The other fascinating aspect of Enoch's journey to the west and north is that he reached these spirits after crossing the Great Sea. While that's probably a reference to the Mediterranean, it also suggests that the burning mountains were the Watchers who rebelled and compelled God to banish them to the Abyss when He sent the Flood of Noah. In the surprise of the year Loe and Higgins find the new Mission: Impossible picture fantastic. It's Lawrence of Arabia meets The Abyss with a side-helping of Sidney Lumet's Fail Safe and they can't wait to see it again. In this episode they discuss the meanings of the movie and also make time to mull over the qualities of all of the other Mission: Impossible pictures. Enjoy.
