We talk about super bowl commercials.....Asian-American representations in media...Fresh off the Boat.....Sopranos....Navin Cronboy's musical stylings...Olive Garden. twit us your death threats at @peter_kimpbell and @drunkardville
a cockroach appears. also, cronboy and kimpbell are back. yes, we are back. don't worry josh, the sound is better on this one. we talk about nathan for you's season finale (yes this was recorded a while ago), dreams, and the state of our lives post graduate school. a cockroach appears. also, happy birthday to sarah osment!
Back to school edition! It's been a long long long long long long time. Our first recording with Brad McDonald was unceremoniously deleted (by me), so we managed to get our favorite friend and funnyman Brad aka Brandon aka Bradald back on the pod to talk about Ezra Edelman's epic documentary O.J. Made in America, then onto more socially pressing topics like the meatball sub at Subway and why my jokes suck. If you find yourself in Montreal, go watch Brad's standup and tell him what you think to his G D face. And lastly, In honor of Navin's recent life-changing experience in Hawaii, ALOHA dear listeners, ALOHA!
omg we're back. so much to talk about. #oscarssowhite. Oscars are SO white! why and wherefore? Cronboy discusses and Kimpbell tries to find a non-racist kernel of sense in Michael Caine's comments. This one's for you, listener. As in, our one listener. Mom. As in Navin's mom. Thanks Mom. Listen or skip to the end for our highly coveted. highly anticipated. political endorsement...we make the New York Times's endorsement look like child's play.
In this installment we got Jane Hu on the ole' pod - Jane's a PhD candidate at Berkeley and has penned a lot of awesome pieces on the internetz (LARB, The Awl, and TNR just to name a few!). We sat down with Jane (that is, we all sat at our respective desks/beds around the country) and got chatty cathy about graduate school - where, why, when will it end, etc. Notable topics included Why Do Canadians Love Chipotle, The Pad Thai Buffet Before Milton Class Was A Bad Idea, Professors Yea or Nay, Does Love Exist, Are Graduate Students The Worst, Why Are Graduate Students The Worst, Religious Conversion Experiences From Literature and When to Expect Them.
Navin and I talk about David Simon's new miniseries "Show Me a Hero" and the recent biopic "Straight Outta Compton" which covers the early careers of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube among others. disclaimer: these films/tv series are a lot more coherent than my plot synopses let on...!
We watched Pier Paolo Pasolini's 1975 "Salò" and lived to tell the tale. If you're inspired to watch it too, tell us what you think. Finishing up with a palate cleanser, and what we agree is the best comedy series out right now - "Rick and Morty." It's fantastic.
What if Putin told you to make a PSA about the dangers of teen sex but it HAD to be in the style of a feature length horror film? "It Follows" would win best film hands down! Navin and I review this great slasher flick which debuted late last March and can now be found anywhere online. Wow this podkast is overdue. Thanks to the overwhelming mountain of fan mail we received in our absence. And thanks Mavis, I had a great time with you in Minnesota.
It's all over you guys. Eight years of Mad Men came to a close two nights ago and we are REALLY excited to talk about it. Though, you will have to wade through some inevitable Sopranos digressions and my annoying habit of referring to marriage as 'the conjugal knot.' Twit us back with your contrarianisms and advice for my Sopranos addiction. Music from this episode can be found here.
Navin and I sit down with our previous guest, David! We ask him unfair questions about what it's like to be a graduate student in english and subject him to two bizarre psychological tests. disclaimer: Sopranos is mentioned yet again in this episode. Music featured in this episode can be found here.
this movie was really NOT what we expected. David Hollingshead and Jen Schnepf join in to give us their reading of the movie, and whether it's really plausible that Dakota Johnson's character has no idea what a butt plug is. David sums up this movie best when he says, "Anastasia Steele’s armpits are the star of this movie." We didn't want to submit ourselves to this film, but in the end it totally dominated us all.
Which show does a better job with Asian-American representation, the recent ABC show "Fresh off the Boat" or the vaunted series "The Sopranos"? Is this some kind of sick joke? am i racist? are you racist for thinking i'm racist? Listen to find out...twit @peter_kimpbell your nasty little thoughts!
finally. the long awaited episode on The Olive Garden. Why does this franchise loom so large in our popular imagination, or is it just me? What does a garden of olives even look like? is this episode an elaborate marketing scheme? I'm starving. someone get me a bowl of 'fredo past'.
the super bowl commercials! Weren't they great? We talk about the coca-cola, nissan, mcdonalds, and budweiser commercials...and our executive producer Rwetha Segunathan is in the studio to sound off on why "The Eric Andre Show" is the worst show on television! don't feel compelled to listen, but if you do, don't feel compelled to admit that you did. twit Kimpbell or Cronboy and let us know what subjects you'd like us to talk about next!
