Join Chris and Susan for an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at “Homicide: Life on the Street,” with journalist, author, writer, and producer David Simon. David delves candidly into how his award-winning 1991 book, “Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets,” was translated to the screen, how he learned to write for teleplays, and how the real crimes and detectives from the book became the engaging stories and characters portrayed in the award-winning television series. David Simon is a Baltimore-based journalist, author, and television producer. He created and produced the celebrated HBO series The Wire, which depicts an American city's political and socioeconomic fissures. A former reporter for the Baltimore Sun, Simon is the author of two books of narrative non-fiction. His first book, Homicide, was the basis for the NBC drama of that name, and his second, The Corner, became an Emmy-winning HBO miniseries. Subsequent television credits include Generation Kill, Treme, Show Me A Hero, The Deuce, and The Plot Against America. His most recent project, We Own This City, is a six-hour, limited series chronicling the rise and fall of the Baltimore Police Department's Gun Trace Task Force. It examines the corruption and moral collapse that befell an American city in which the policies of drug prohibition and mass arrest were championed at the expense of actual police work. For the last decade, Dominique Fishback has been building up her resume with some stellar performances. In 2018, she appeared in the David Simon show Show Me A Hero. She parlayed that into a regular role on The Deuce. Then she played Deborah Johnson in Judas and the Black Messiah – a drama based on the true story of Black Panther Fred Hampton. The role earned her a BAFTA nomination, among other accolades. These days, you can see her on Amazon Prime's Swarm. It's a TV series created by Donald Glover and writer Janine Nabers. Fishback has the ability to command a fierce, brilliant presence on screen. She can be disarming and vulnerable in one moment, terrifying the next.

We're heading to 1987 Yonkers, NY with HBO's Show Me a Hero. This 2015 miniseries by David Simon (The Wire) based on Lisa Belkin's book of the same name tells the true story of Nick Wasicsko (Oscar Isaac), a young mayor tasked with desegregating Yonkers amidst rabid racism and fierce political opposition.
After two percent of the world's population inexplicably vanishes, the residents of Mapleton, New York are left to grapple with the "whys" and "hows" and "but Gary Buseys" of it all. Adapted from the novel by Tom Perrotta, The Leftovers (2014) is a series about loss and grief and cults and Justin Theroux being the messiah, maybe. Although the premiere (and first season) is a bit of a downer, the series as a whole is an absolutely riveting puzzle box of a mystery. (18:32 - 1:45:37) ... In the late 80's, federal judge Leonard Sand ordered the city of Yonkers, New York to build two hundred units of public housing in an attempt to desegregate the city. The first part of Show Me a Hero (2015) starts with nasally future mayor Nick Wasicsko (Oscar Isaac) campaigning for office, and later installments delve into the heated racial politics of the era. Things are about to get very bonkers... in Yonkers. (1:45:38 - 3:20:18) ... Also, The Nevers, Constantine, The Last of Us, and Lovecraft Country. (0 - 18:31) Q: Have you written a "thank you" note to your mayor, yet? | Send feedback to hooplecast@gmail.com. Find our recording schedule, show notes, discussion threads, and more at hooplecast.com. | Recorded February 21, 2021. Released March 26, 2021. [Warning: Explicit Language.]

The single biggest social change of the last 50 years is also the most taboo to talk about: the disappearance of fathers. Throughout most of our history, family cohesion wasn't just an abstract goal – to be pursued or not at a person's convenience – but a necessary precursor to having children, backed by the force of law and reinforced by social stigmas. These changes have been most pronounced in the United States: where, in 1960, just 9% of children were born to unwed parents, today 40% are, with the result that America now leads the world in its rate of children living in single-parent households – 23%, compared to a global average of just 7%. Euphemisms like “single-parent households” obscure as much as they enlighten, for the reality is that 81% of those single-parent households are female-led. What does this father-absence bode for the United States? What do fathers contribute, and how will their lack be felt? And what does it mean for men, that so many of them are now missing out on one of life's most important responsibilities? Get full access to The Broken World at thebrokenworld.substack.com/subscribe

Scattered around Canada's Great Slave Lake -- the deepest lake in North America -- 10 survivalists will endure the harsh and incredibly cold landscape -- the Arctic -- and they will do it all alone. Alone is a success survival show on the History Channel now available on a bunch of the streaming services. History Channel describes the season as: "Completely isolated, with a small pack of survival gear, they must live off the land by creating their own shelters, catching their own food, and surviving the harsh terrain. They take on a host of dangerous wildlife, including packs of wolves, bears, and cougars. The last one standing takes home the prize." Which if you watch the season, is a vast exaggeration on so many accounts. It's a very entertaining show, and if you're following new seasons, you'll notice that a lot of the allure has changed, as well as a lot of the rules. This cast talks with as little spoiler alerts as possible about Season 1 exclusively. #alone #survival #survivalshows #historychannel #nakedandafraid #hungergames ----------- This is highly speculative podcast, hosted by a stand up comedian. It's a delightful documentary where the filmmaker stays out of it, and lets Richard and his family tell their story. And often Richard's hands do the talking. In the documentary, Richard traces his journey from his troubled childhood, when he began losing his vision, to present day as he relentlessly pursues perfection while struggling with the reality that his biggest weakness might also be his greatest strength. The film features extensive vérité footage of both Richard and his family as well as archive footage of Turner's many television appearances. The film features interviews with notable magicians including Turner, Johnny Thompson, Max Maven, Armando Lucero, and Jason England. Dealt debuted at the 2017 South By Southwest Film Festival in competition where it won the Audience Award for Best Documentary Feature. Dealt went on to win four more audience awards and screened at festivals around the world including China and New Zealand. The film is distributed by IFC Films through Sundance Selects. In the US, the film can be viewed on Hulu, Amazon and iTunes. Internationally, it is available on Netflix. --- Please Like/Subscribe/Follow and check out our https://youtube.com/danfrigolette for video content. ----- Covid 19 has spawned some wonderful free time, this podcast is a result of self-quarantine, we at Tiger Crisis vehemently implore you to do the same, #stayhome #staysafe #flattenthecurve Tiger Crisis begins by following the tribulations of Netflix's Documentary Series: Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness. Philippe Petit had a dream, a passion, a compulsion, to hang a high wire in the most unlikely of places...103 stories above the earth, across the twin giants, the World Trade Towers. Just months after COO's were signed and occupants took residency in the building, a tiny French man with a dream, a knack for showmanship, and impeccable balance, hung his wire, and made history. It was as much history in 1974, as it is today, just as it was in 2008 when this documentary came out. As is the case for many powerful documentaries, just years later, the story was turned into a major motion picture which utilized 3D Imax filmmaking as a helper to tell this amazing story. This documentary is told solely through the mouths of those that were there that faithful day, and the filmmaker stays out of it, as only a great documentarian shall do. I love this film. And can re-watch it every year or more. ----- Please Like/Subscribe/Follow and check out our https://youtube.com/danfrigolette for video content. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness claims to be a True Crime Documentary Series. But is it? Is it at all? What crime did we explore? Did it take a position? Or is it just a reality show ingratiating itself into a widely popular genre for trend-ability? Do the filmmakers have a responsibility? Now that Playing House's second season is well underway, we've invited Nick Rheinwald-Jones, one of its staunchest fans, to join us for a discussion of how things are going so far. Tara shares a Playing House-based Tiny Triumph, after which it's time for Liv to report on the latest Face Off, and for Tara to share the latest insanity from Under The Dome. Around The Dial stops at Regular Show, Show Me A Hero, Drunk History, Project Greenlight, Hannibal, and the apparently infinite galaxy of Star Wars toy ads from the '80s. Nick makes a case for the induction of the Veronica Mars episode "Spit And Eggs" into the Canon, and then after naming the week's Winner and Loser, we dive into Rob Hartmann's latest diabolical Game Time. Load up some gingi and new-news and enjoy! GUESTS
As Humans (heard of 'em) wraps its first season, John Ramos joins us to talk about the titular humans and their synth friends...and foes! Liv tells us all about a wedding-themed episode of Face Off, and Tara takes us through the latest idiocy making us all Domer on Under The Dome. Around The Dial stops at Last Week Tonight, Show Me A Hero, Rectify, Mr. Robot, and another confounding Star Wars toy ad. Dave makes a singular case for the submission to The Canon of the G.I. Joe episode "The Viper Is Coming," and no, that is not a very long typo. Then, after naming the week's Winner and Loser, we close up with a Game Time that takes us through all of life's biggest events! Top up your synth fluid and join us! GUESTS
