If you're a regular Talkhouse Podcast listener you know that we most often feature musicians on the show, but we're always happy when creative people in other fields share a chat, too—especially when they've had the kind of interesting careers that today's two guests have. Haley Joel Osment made a permanent mark on pop culture when he uttered the words “I see dead people” in 1999's The Sixth Sense, made when he was just 10 years old. The line still reverberates today: Just listen to Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us." Osment was nominated for an Oscar for his role as a psychic kid, and he has had a fruitful, relatively low-key acting career since—no scandals, no blockbusters, just a bunch of really interesting work. As you'll hear in this podcast, he's fully down to earth about his unusual journey—even ready to find a tiny bit of positivity in the recent L.A. fires, which completely destroyed both his and his parents' house. He's chatting here with his actor-comedian friend Matt Walsh, who's probably best known for playing Mike McLintock opposite Julia Louis-Dreyfuss on Veep. It was the perfect vehicle for Walsh, who made his name as an improv comedian in Chicago before his troupe, Upright Citizens Brigade, which also features Amy Poehler, took their show to New York. Walsh is one of those guys who brings the funny to every movie and TV part he's in: If you don't recognize his name, you'll certainly recognize his face. The reason these two came together today is that a movie they co-starred in is just coming out: It's called Not An Artist, and it's an ensemble comedy about a group of artists who gather at a mysterious retreat—organized by no less than The RZA—to decide whether they're actually cut out to be artists. It's available on demand now. These two chat not only about that funny film, but also about Osment's experience with the L.A. fires, about Walsh's Chicago background, weird Airbnbs, the magic of David Mamet's dialogue and lots more. It's a good one, enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Haley Joel Osment and Matt Walsh for chatting. The Sixth Sense is a 1999 American psychological thriller film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It stars Bruce Willis as a child psychologist whose patient (Haley Joel Osment) claims he can see and talk to the dead. Released by Buena Vista Pictures (through its Hollywood Pictures label) on August 6, 1999, The Sixth Sense received critical acclaim, with praise for the cast performances (particularly those of Willis, Osment, and Toni Collette), atmosphere, direction and surprise ending. It was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Shyamalan, Best Supporting Actor for Osment, and Best Supporting Actress for Collette.[3] The film established Shyamalan as a predominant thriller screenwriter/director and introduced the cinema public to his traits, most notably his affinity for twist endings. It was the second-highest-grossing film of 1999, behind Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, making roughly $293 million in the US and $379 million in other markets. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/100horrors/message

Screenwriter Van Robichaux (Fist Fight, Brooklyn 99) joins to discuss Steven Spielberg's 2001 science fiction film A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE starring Haley Joel Osment, Jude Law, Frances O'Connor and William Hurt. Originally developed by Stanley Kubrick and handed to Spielberg, A.I. is a fascinating mix of two major filmmakers' disparate sensibilities, combining fairy tale fancy with dystopian sci-fi. Osment earned praise for his intense portrayal of David, a sophisticated robot boy programmed with the single-minded desire to love. Unfurling as a futuristic variation on Pinocchio, A.I. confounded some critics and audiences upon release, but has since gained pockets of appreciation as a brilliantly atmospheric and philosophical entry in Spielberg's illustrious filmography. As the emergence of AI technology makes today's headlines, join us as we revisit this strange and singular film along with diversions into the WGA/SAG-AFTRA dual strike, Chappie, Hubie Halloween, Star Trek, Jack and Jill, and much, much more! A.I. Artificial Intelligence is currently available to stream on The Criterion Channel and Pluto TV.
Being a child star isn't easy. Once the cuteness wears off, the transition to adult star can be nearly impossible and gruelling. Hollywood is full of tragic stories of former child stars who flame out when they reach adulthood, trying to chase that Hollywood dream in what can be a ruthless town. Yet, some of them, like this week's WTF subject Haley Joel Osment, manage to defy the odds. Osment became the biggest child star since Macaulay Culkin thanks to his turn in The Sixth Sense opposite Bruce Willis, where he memorably claimed, "I see dead people." It landed him a best supporting actor Oscar nomination in 1999 and paved the way to more starring roles in high profile projects like Pay it Forward and Steven Spielberg's A.I.:Artificial Intelligence. The parts started to dry up as he got older, but he eventually re-emerged as an adult in solid roles, such as on Amazon's The Boys and in Kevin Smith's Tusk. Always a well-liked figure, Osment's reinvented himself as a character actor, and while he may not be the household name he once was, his future in the industry seems bright. So join us as we dig into his career in "WTF Happened to Haley Joel Osment?"!

I talked with my friend Sarah Osment about "Governors on Sominex," a poem by David Berman. In addition to being a poet, Berman was the frontman and lyricist of the band Silver Jews.Sarah works in the Writing Program at the University of Chicago, where she teaches courses in Media Aesthetics. She has devoted her intellectual energy to more public-facing projects since earning her PhD in English from Brown University in 2016: she is the co-founder of Hyped on Melancholy, an online magazine devoted to smart words about sad songs and the reasons we cleave to them. Sarah's own essay for Hyped—on Wilson Phillips's "Hold On" and much else besides—is here. She is also co-editor, along with David Hering, of a recent cluster of essays on the poetry and music of David Berman published at Post45.Please follow, rate. and review the podcast if you like what you hear, and share an episode with a friend. Brooke is wearing the Shock Collar this morning! Today's question: In 1999, one of the biggest movies of the year was "Sixth Sense." It was a film that starred a young actor Haley Joel Osment who was visited by ghosts. It made over 670 million dollars and caught the attention of other Hollywood elite including Steven Spielberg. A few years later, Spielberg had the chance to direct a different potential blockbuster movie and he wouldn't do it unless Osment was in it. Unfortunately, the two sides couldn't agree on his demand...and not only was Osment out, but so was Spielberg. Still, that 2001 movie went on to great success. What was it?
I’m so honored to share this show with you all. Ronnie is a friend of a friend who was referred to be on my podcast. My friend Tommy initially referred Ronnie because had recently had his first experience with psychedelics-which has changed my life and many others as well. I didn’t realize the amazing story that Ronnie has!Ronnie grew up in the Bourdeaux area of Nashville-a really rough area. He grew up with lots of crime and poverty around him but he Rose above it! He was committed to not live that way and found his way out with his passion-automobiles and motorcycles. At a young age he was making a ton of money and then life ‘intervened’. Ronnie went from crazy success early to an unexpected accident that took away his ability to walk, to live the normal life we all take for granted. But it didn’t take away his attitude, spirit or determination! I’m so truly honored to have had Ronnie on my show. I have not yet met him but we have a kindred friendship after this show. I am going to road trip home to Nashville and connect with him and other friends soon. This show isn’t about me AT ALL!!! I encourage you to watch this on YouTube and or listen on Apple/etc. Ronnie is an inspiration to me, he will be to you as well. Let’s put it this way, if you are blessed enough to use your legs, to walk, BE GRATEFUL!!! And Ronnie has a spirit and attitude that will not quit. He admits he will walk again and I believe him! Since this show I have daily said his name in my head, every step I have taken. I have faced a rough few weeks but OMG, I cannot complain and having had the pleasure to meet him on this show has inspired me to punch through some really tough moments. I hope you enjoy this show. I do this to share others stories and inspire others. Ronnie is one amazing human! Thank you again and please hit like and subscribe, I’m here to do this to serve others! To share people’s stories to inspire at least one other human. #psychedelics #paralysis #attitude #gratitude #awakening #adversity #magic #resilience

In part TWO of the "Best Movies of the 90's" tournament, those who moved on got the opportunity to change their movie for the semi's and finals, leading to some of that good ol' chaos this podcast is known for (seriously, the finals are ridiculous). Come on, baby, let's do the TWIST! Callie and Kaitlin discuss the film that put M. Night Shyamalan on the map (no, not "Signs"). It's "The Sixth Sense," featuring tiny Haley Joel Osment, tear-jerking Toni Collette, terrifying Donnie Wahlberg, barfing Mischa Barton and more! It takes a village (no, not "The Village") to make a great horror movie, people.

We spoke to Haley Joel Osment about his role as Stu Camillo in Future Man on Hulu and how Stu resembles some other characters Osment has played in the past. With Kingdom Hearts 3's recent release, we had to ask him about voicing Sora as well. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On to the AFI list! This week we twist again like we did last summer (when we did Psycho)...this time it's M. Night Shyamalan's "The Sixth Sense" from 1999. When M. was killing it and Bruce still had some hair. Is this the greatest twist in film history? Is Donnie Wahlberg's acting the bigger twist? What is ASMR and was Osment a pioneer? Do we deserve a "Seventh Sense" sequel? How angry is that prospective boyfriend? All these questions and more get answered on this week's episode. Haley Joel Osment’s career started at a vert early age. By chance, he was cast in a Pizza Hut commercial which led to being cast in the final scenes of 'Forrest Gump.' Soon after, he was on sitcoms, and then earned an Oscar nomination for the horror classic, ‘The Sixth Sense.’ In this interview, Osment talks about his early appreciation of the craft of being an actor, lessons from icons like M. Night Shyamalan, Steven Spielberg, and Robert Zemeckis, the luxury of preparation time on set, his decision to come back to film after attending college, and what it’s like working on comedies with Will Ferrell and Kristen Wiig. In his latest film, 'Clara’s Ghost,' Joel stars as Joe. The official description reads, “Set over the course of a single evening in the Reynolds family home in suburban Connecticut, Clara's Ghost tells the story of Clara Reynolds who, fed up with constant ribbing from her self-absorbed showbiz family, finds solace in and guidance from the supernatural force she believes is haunting her.” If you enjoyed this interview, join thousands of viewers for the new YouTube series, Creative Principles, which dissects new films, series, and more: http://bit.ly/2FARJz5

On today's show, Lady P is joined by fellow podcasters, James Hancock and Mikhail Karadimov, to talk about Satyajit Ray's 1955 film PATHER PANCHALI. James and Mikhail are co-hosts of Wrong Reel, one of the most irreverent and profanity-laced film podcasts on the web. So they're a natural fit for a discussion about a sensitive portrait of a poverty stricken family living in rural West Bengali India. In true Wrong Reel style, they celebrate and send-up Ray's masterpiece in equal measure-- which is basically a long-winded way of saying the episode is NSFW. Then, the panel moves on to a discussion about child stars. Lady P thinks the naturalism of the kids is part of what makes PATHER PANCHALI a revelation, but listen up to see if James and Mikhail agree. Plus, everyone lists off their personal favorite performances given by preadolescence actors. They also lament a few instances where films are nearly derailed by the appearance of an overly precocious child.
The 122nd T100P 'cast dives into an intimate ghost story after weeks of big-budget epics. Is this movie more effective when you know the twist...or less? Is it a worthy way to end a great run of AFI movies in the '90s? How did the M. Night Shyamalan / Bruce Willis ego dynamic co-exist in this mega-hit? We've got an answer or two, so check us out and also hit up our sponsor at sparkplugcoffee.com!
