In September, the U.S. military began striking boats suspected of drug smuggling in the Caribbean. Since then, questions about the legality of these strikes have swirled. Last week, The Post reported that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth gave a spoken order to kill everyone before a Sept. 2 attack, according to officials. The commander of the mission later made the decision to strike two survivors of the attack who had been clinging to the wreckage. Today on the politics roundtable, we'll discuss the fallout, and why both Republicans and Democrats are increasing their scrutiny of Hegseth's leadership at the Department of Defense. And, after brokering a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in October, President Trump hoped to do the same for Russia and Ukraine. But his efforts have fallen short.Host Colby Itkowitz speaks with Matthew Choi, the co-anchor of our politics newsletter, The Early Brief, and White House reporter Michael Birnbaum. Today's episode was produced by Laura Benshoff, Josh Carroll, and Thomas Lu. It was mixed by Sean Carter. It was edited by Reena Flores. Thanks also to our politics editors. PREVIEW: Assessing Military Conduct in the September 2025 Incident: Colleague Richard Epstein discusses the US military's destruction of a boat carrying 11 people in September 2025, arguing that regardless of unknown details—such as the presence of drugs or children—firing on defenseless individuals violates military codes of conduct and constitutes a "desperate form of illegality" requiring accountability.
Military Rules of Engagement Violations: Drug Boat Strike — Colonel Jeff McCausland — McCausland condemns a recent U.S. military strike on a drug trafficking vessel that allegedly killed surviving personnel in the water after vessel destruction. McCausland argues this "double tap" strike pattern violates international laws of armed conflict and U.S.military rules of engagement, which mandate rescue and medical assistance for defenseless, surrendered, or incapacitated enemy personnel. McCausland emphasizes that the administration has systematically withheld video documentation of the second strike, preventing independent verification of compliance with humanitarian warfare standards.1900
The U.S. military strikes another alleged drug boat, as lawmakers are shown classified video of the earlier strike that some have called a possible war crime. We have new exclusive CNN reporting that undercuts a major claim made by defense officials about that secondary strike. Plus, a suspect is arrested and charged in the 2021 Washington, D.C. pipe bomb case. Authorities say he planted bombs outside Democratic and Republican National Committee headquarters, the night before the January 6th attack. Learn more about your ad choices. Brad and Dan return with a packed Weekly Roundup that cuts through the noise of culture war headlines to get at what is really happening in American politics and religion this week. They start with the bizarre story dominating Congress: alleged Venezuelan narco boats, U.S. military strikes, and the growing scrutiny around Pete Hegseth's involvement. Brad and Dan unpack the legal and ethical questions raised by the operation, the bipartisan concerns over potential war crimes, and the way Hegseth's rhetoric is being weaponized in the larger project of authoritarian politics. As blame shifts within the administration, the hosts look at how these events fit into a longer pattern of circumventing democratic norms under the guise of national security. From there, the episode moves into the latest culture war flashpoint out of Oklahoma. A University of Oklahoma student, Samantha Fulnecky, received a failing grade on a paper centered on conservative Christian claims, and the incident was quickly inflated into a statewide moral panic. Brad and Dan trace how a classroom disagreement became a coordinated spectacle, how politicians and media personalities seized on the moment, and what the uproar reveals about academic freedom and the pressure educators face in a polarized climate. They discuss the difference between expressing a viewpoint and meeting academic standards, and why higher education has become a convenient battleground for Christian nationalist narratives. The hosts also break down the Supreme Court's decision to keep Texas's contested congressional maps in place for 2026. They examine the racial and partisan consequences of the ruling, what political leaders are saying in response, and how the decision fits into a broader assault on voting rights and democratic representation. Despite the heavy topics, Brad and Dan close with reasons for hope. They highlight ongoing pushback against authoritarian politics, communities organizing for justice, and signs that democratic accountability remains possible. Michael digs into the controversy surrounding the unreleased video of the second boat strike — the tape lawmakers saw but the public hasn't. CannCon and Chris Paul tackle a whirlwind of breaking stories, beginning with Congress's sudden panic over AI “deepfake” election interference, a narrative they argue is designed to pre-blame Trump and justify new censorship powers. They pivot to Alabama's border revolt, where the state vows to defend its sovereignty while DHS plays political games with illegal-immigration numbers and asylum fraud. From there, they break down the media's bizarre framing of J6, the federal government's collapsing credibility, and Kamala Harris's strange, overly theatrical public appearances. The hosts also examine Trump's mounting pressure campaigns, the manufactured panic over tariffs, and new polling exposing how thoroughly the public has rejected legacy-media narratives. With sharp analysis, humor, and Chris Paul's signature pattern recognition, this episode cuts through misinformation to explain what's actually happening and why the establishment seems increasingly desperate.

A Virginia grand jury declines to reindict New York Attorney General Letitia James on mortgage-fraud charges. It's a major setback for the Trump administration after a judge dismissed the original case just last week. Plus, lawmakers walk out of a closed-door briefing with very different reactions to the Sept. 2 boat strike that killed two survivors. Republicans claimed the operation was lawful while Democrats called the footage “troubling.” And the FBI arrests a man from Woodbridge, Virginia, accused of planting the RNC/DNC pipe bombs on Jan. 5, 2021. He appears in court Friday as agents continue searching his home for evidence. These stories and more highlight your Unbiased Updates for Friday, December 5, 2025.
The stable genius, Donald Trump, returns as he navigates the new Democrat hoax of the blowing up of the narco boat in Venezuela, and still running the country based on what is good for Americans. The Minnesota billion-dollar fraud controversy details are horrific and at times absurd, yet the Democrats' strategy is to deflect and focus on Trump calling Somalis "garbage". Plus, Stefani Buhajla checks in, new democrat bill to get rid of detention of illegals, Jazzy broke, Panetta is back, a woman in Great Britian arrested for calling her ex-boyfriend who would physically abuse her a homosexual slur, and more. AP correspondent Ben Thomas reports the Trump administration's military campaign against suspected sea-borne drug traffickers has resumed.
The Pentagon says U.S. forces have carried out another strike on an alleged drug-trafficking boat in the Eastern Pacific, killing four suspected narco-terrorists. The announcement came as Congress reviewed a previous operation that killed two survivors from an earlier strike. Top Senate Republican Tom Cotton defended the operation, while Democrats called the classified footage troubling.Homeland Security says an ICE operation in Minneapolis has led to multiple arrests of what the agency calls “the worst of the worst” criminal illegal immigrants. The Metro Surge operation began Monday. Many of those arrested are Somali nationals, with cases ranging from gang affiliations to sexual-conduct convictions and felony smuggling. Other charges include aggravated assault and domestic violence. The mid-terms are looking more favorable to republicans in Texas after the Supreme Court approved the republicans new map. GOP candidates will now have a better opportunity to flip Democrat seats in 5 Texas districts. Though the five potential gains in Texas could be offset by 5 potential gains in California, after voters approved a new map last month that favors Democrats. Now, Florida is the latest in a string of states that are working to redrawing congressional lines.
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell have endured a lot during the nearly seven years they've covered the Murdaugh family but NOTHING like what they're experiencing now. Shortly after Mallory Beach's death, Mallory's family filed a lawsuit in search of justice and accountability and an assurance that Parker's Kitchen would shore up the training of their cashiers when it comes to the sale of alcohol to minors. Instead of seeking to settle the case, Parker's Kitchen, Greg Parker and their legal team appear to have embarked down a very dark path, engaging two political operatives — one known for “mischief-making” and the other known for harassment campaigns against individuals — to help lessen their liability in the case. Which brings us to the past six months, during which Greg Parker's attorneys have used mischaracterizations and unsupported theories to turn their focus on Mandy and Liz in an effort to silence them and their coverage of the case(s)… So much to cover, so let's dive in!
