In his first sit-down interview about "The Book of Prince," director Ezra Edelman seeks catharsis — if not closure — in the battle for the truth and control over the life story of one of the biggest control freaks ever. Prince was a shape-shifter who lived and died as a mystery. So why won't his estate lift the veil? And when it comes to celebrities, what does "public interest" really mean? They also share some music news and talk about their plans for the summer. The conversation ends with a quote about procrastination.https://www.youtube.com/@lowtreestudioshttps://www.lowtreestudios.com/After passing their driving test, it takes someone just ten weeks to become a bad driver. A study of 2,000 car owners found the average new road user lets bad habits creep in less than three months after getting their driver's license. The two things we do almost immediately are not holding the steering wheel in the correct position and failing to check our mirrors every time we make a lane change. Only 40 percent of women and 32 percent of men believe they have bad driving habits.New research out of Scotland says that cyclists have a 47% lower risk of early death and a 10% lower risk of hospitalization for any reason, than commuters who drive or take the train. The study followed more than 82,000 UK residents over 18 years, who ranged in age from 16-74 at the beginning. Commuting by bike was associated with a 51% lower risk of dying from cancer, a 24% lower risk of hospitalization for heart disease and a 20% lower risk of being prescribed drugs for mental health problems. - Bruce Springsteen – is officially a billionaire. According to a “conservative” estimate by Forbes, his net worth is $1.1 billion. In 2021, he sold his music catalog for an estimated $500-$550 million, the biggest transaction ever for a single artist's body of work. - Prince's planned Netflix biopic is on hold because his estate has a problem with its 9-hour length, according to a report. The 2018 deal for the doc called for a 6-hour series, but director Ezra Edelman's final cut currently runs 3 hours longer, which the estate says violates their agreement.➢ Lamborghini Started Out Making Tractors: At some point, a beef with Enzo Ferrari led to the company making sports cars, but it still makes tractors to this day.➢ Shell used to literally sell shells: In the 1800s, antique dealer Marcus Samuel expanded his business by selling exotic seashells. This required a large import/export infrastructure. When he died, his sons took over and developed an interest in importing and exporting oil.➢ Avon used to sell books: In the 1800s, founder David McConnell was a door-to-door book salesman. To get his foot in the door, he offered women a free vial of perfume that he made himself. It turned out that his perfume was much more popular than the books…➢ Mazda made corks: The company was founded in 1920 as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co in Japan. After about a decade, the company did a complete 180 and got into manufacturing vehicles.➢ Samsung was basically a general store: Founded as Samsung Sanghoe in 1938, it sold dried fish, noodles and other groceries. By the 1950s, the company was branching out into insurance, construction, and even a theme park. But electronics turned out to be their big money maker.➢ Taco Bell was originally a hot dog stand: In 1948, Glen Bell ran Bell's Drive-In, selling hot dogs and burgers. But he noticed the popularity of the café across the street, which sold tacos. He got friendly with staff there, learned their recipes, and opened his first taco stand in 1951.➢ Play Doh Started as Wallpaper Cleaner: The company was a struggling soap manufacturer that started making wallpaper cleaner, at a time when coal soot was an issue inside people's homes. A relative of one of the owners had a daycare and gave some of the wallpaper cleaner to the kids to play with — and they loved it. The formula was adjusted by adding color and a scent — and Play Doh was born.➢ Louis Vuitton was a Box Maker: 13-year-old Louis worked as a packer, making fancy...

The last chapter of the film is a breathtaking descent into hell, with O.J. eventually found liable for the deaths of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman in civil court and his desperate attempts to resuscitate his showbiz career (while hiding the money from the Goldman family), finding himself at the absolute bottom of the entertainment food chain, including the exploitative hidden camera prank show “Juiced” and finally his arrest for what amounted to petty larceny in the demimonde of sports memorabilia collectors, where the judge threw the book at him. Karen and I discuss how the culture was forever changed by the O.J. Simpson media circus and how this film is a masterclass in the study of a narcissist who felt none of the rules of the world applied to him, and how understanding personality cults helps to explain why O.J got away with it for so long and yet still could not avoid the fate of most sociopaths, in a film that is ultimately about white privilege as much as it is about justice denied and toxic celebrities. The writer and content strategist Karen Geier returns for a deep dive into Ezra Edelman's Oscar-winning documentary from 2016, O.J.: Made in America, made for ESPN's film unit '30 for 30' but released in theatres (the Academy changed the rules for the Documentary category after this 5 part docuseries won). This episode covers the first half of this fantastic 467 minute documentary, from O.J.'s origins as a superstar athlete and celebrity pitchman, his stormy marriage to Nicole that led to her vicious murder and the manhunt once he became the prime suspect. But this story takes place against the larger story of Los Angeles; the mass post-war migration of Black Americans from the South to the west coast and the evolution of the racist LAPD's law enforcement in the city that culminated in the beating of Rodney King and the subsequent riots in 1992, creating the conditions that gave O.J.'s “Dream Team” their winning strategy for the “Trial of the Century”. Karen and I discuss our favourite parts of the documentary, O.J.'s narcissism and disinterest in the civil rights movement, his strange showbiz career and finally the night of the Bronco chase, which marked the beginning of a bleak new chapter in American life. This is the second episode in the WGA inspired mini-season. A break from the usual "Directors on Directing," this season is focused on the nuts and bolts of screenwriting. The second episode features BRADLEY JACKSON, another co-writer on my debut feature, STAGES. Bradley also co-wrote my short film, THE HEIGHTS. But, once again, these two projects are just one of many other credits under Bradley's belt. His first produced screenplay, INTRAMURAL, a comedy about Intramural football, starred Kate McKinnon (SNL), Jake Lacy (The White Lotus) and Beck Bennett (SNL).  Just prior to the strike, Bradley had just finished setting up his script GYM RAT - a gritty basketball drama - with A24 and Oscar winning director Ezra Edelman, in addition to writing an original feature for Bill Simmons and Spotify.  Bradley is also a talented documentary director and producer. His directorial debut, FACING NOLAN - about the legendary Major League pitcher and Texas legend Nolan Ryan - premiered at SXSW 2022 to rave reviews and then premiered on Netflix.   Other credits include writing and producing the feature documentary DEALT which won the Audience Award at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival and producing the 4 part docu-series for Showtime and Boardwalk Pictures called ACTION - about the legalization of sports gambling in America.  His current project is writing/producing the Milli Vanilli documentary for MRC that was bought by Paramount+ and will be released in late 2023. During this conversation, we spoke about revealing character through comedy, the third draft "subtext" transition, and how a co-writer can help wade through determining if the pages you're writing are actually good.

Geektown Radio returns for another week of tv news, film chat, and all the latest UK premiere date info you could need. He started out working on cartoons such as 'Tom & Jerry', and 'Dexter's Laboratory' before a major gear shift into scoring documentaries. His most notable recent work was the groundbreaking documentary ‘O.J.: Made in America’ which not only picked up multiple Emmys but also an Oscar, due to it being released as a seven-and-a-half-hour film as well as a tv series! Ezra Edelman's extraordinary documentary revisits and redefines everything about the O.J. Simpson case, from the bronco chase, through the trial, and the aftermath following the verdict. Gary's equally extraordinary score for the series/film morphs in and out of different musical genres, from bluesy film noir, to string quartets, to electronica, so we discuss how he found the sound for the project. Also On This Week's Show: Ross is back in the co-host hot seat, so we catch up with the tv shows and films we've been watching, including 'Tin Star', 'Philip K. Back to school edition! It's been a long long long long long long time. Our first recording with Brad McDonald was unceremoniously deleted (by me), so we managed to get our favorite friend and funnyman Brad aka Brandon aka Bradald back on the pod to talk about Ezra Edelman's epic documentary O.J. Made in America, then onto more socially pressing topics like the meatball sub at Subway and why my jokes suck. If you find yourself in Montreal, go watch Brad's standup and tell him what you think to his G D face. And lastly, In honor of Navin's recent life-changing experience in Hawaii, ALOHA dear listeners, ALOHA!

On EP 35 hosts Paco Romane and George Chen examine O.J.: Made in America a 2016 American five-part documentary miniseries produced and directed by Ezra Edelman for ESPN Films and their 30 for 30 series. The documentary explores two of America's greatest fixations–race and celebrity–through the life of O. J. Simpson, from his emerging football career at the University of Southern California and why America fell in love with him, to being accused of murdering Nicole Brown Simpson and his subsequent acquittal, and how he was convicted and imprisoned for another crime 13 years later. We are thrilled to have as our guests our talented friends - comedian Greg Edwards (Thug Notes) and via phone with author/comedian Harmon Leon (Infiltrator). Greg Edwards is a fearless comedian from the state of Virginia. Greg moved to San Francisco in 2001 and became a fixture on the Bay Area comedy scene. Greg is known for his distinctive voice, one-liners, awkward views and social commentary. Greg has worked with Dave Chappelle, Paul Mooney, Patrice O'Neal, Damon Wayans, Bill Burr, Charlie Murphy, Maria Bamford, Jim Jeffries, Harland Williams, Bill Bellamy, Deon Cole, W. Kamau Bell and many more outstanding comedians. Most recently, Greg stars as "Sparky Sweets PhD" of the critically-acclaimed web series THUG NOTES. **Sup Doc has created a Patreon page for those that can help out. For a long time, O.J. Simpson seemed to be running away from his race. "I'm not black, I'm O.J.!" he'd tell his friends. The he was charged with murder, and his defense team needed that jury to see O.J. as black. So, they had to get creative. Gene talks to Ezra Edelman, director of the new ESPN documentary "OJ: Made in America."(A warning, today's episode has some racially charged language.)

ESPN's 30 For 30 strand has been producing great, fascinating documentaries about significant sporting events and athletes for years now, but the series may have reached its pinnacle with Ezra Edelman's seven and a half hour, five part miniseries about the life of O.J. Simpson. Encapsulating Simpson's football career, marriage, murder trial, slide into obscurity and eventual trial for burglary and kidnapping, Edelman's film also stands as a breathtaking examination of race, gender and celebrity in American society, the history of L.A. and systemic racism in the LAPD, and uses the prism of one man's life to tell the story of the society that created him. In short, it's excellent, and Matt and Ed thought it would be remiss of them not to discuss it. In addition to talking about the documentary itself, they compare it to FX's also fascinating miniseries The People v. O.J. Simpson, ponder the impact that Brexit will have on the British film industry (spoiler: a significant and terrible one!) and evaluate the new Ghostbusters theme. 00:00:00 - 00:19:44 - Intro & News 00:19:45 - 00:53:23 - Matt & Ed discuss O.J.: Made in America 00:53:24 - 00:58:03 - SRS Recommends & Outro
