I wanted to mention that the Confederate Soldier, General Nathan Forrest - the man primarily responsible for the Fort Pillow Massacre went on to become the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan - fighting for the suppression of Black American votes. He would later recommend the Klan be disbanded for not being disciplined enough and late in his life he would claim he was never in the Klan at all and actually gave a speech in support of racial harmony.
