On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Bible Professor, Dr. James Coakley joins us to talk about Word Play as another way of "Freshening Up Our Bible Study". A good wordplay catches the eye and often communicates an effective message with wit and humor. Puns are also favorite devices for communicating ideas with wit and humor. Remember: “You can tune a guitar, but you can’t tuna fish. Unless you play bass.” The challenge is that biblical authors incorporate word play in Hebrew or Greek and it is not always easy to detect in our Bibles. In film and television, a common stock element is to pair two characters who are completely opposite of each other. Viewers are drawn to these presentations because the difference between them are so stark. Sometimes the opposite characters serve as foils. Biblical authors do the equivalent by placing characters close together (not always physically intersecting) so that you the reader see the major differences between them and then draw valuable insights. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Professor, Dr. James Coakley joins us to offer "Polar Opposites" as yet another way of freshening up our bible study. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Professor of Bible, Dr. James Coakley joins us to suggest yet another interesting way to freshen up our bible study. In computing, a hyperlink is a reference to data that the user can follow by clicking or tapping that leaps to another document or to a specific element within a document. Biblical authors do the equivalent by expecting readers to connect to other texts because they are inextricably linked by common words or concepts that empower readers to make meaningful comparisons and contrasts. Dr. Jim Coakley, Professor of Bible at MBI joins Mornings with Eric and Brigitte on Monday to show us yet another way to freshen up our bible study with the "Coakley Voiceovers and Asides." A definition of a voiceover or aside is an off-screen voice that informs the audience of important facts or opinions in fiction and non-fiction productions. Authors typically do not inject themselves into the events that they are writing about. On occasion, though, they cannot seem to help themselves and insert a "voice-over" that overrides what the characters are doing in the text. Names play an important role in the Bible. While major characters such as Peter and Paul or Mary and Joseph, are named, minor characters are often not given a name. However, some minor characters are given names like Simon of Cyrene (who helped Jesus carry His cross), Zaccheus, the tax collector with whom Jesus ate dinner, and Barabbas, the criminal who won his release instead of Jesus. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Professor of Bible, Dr. James Coakley joins us to talk about the characters in the Bible given no name. We are now in baseball season and the triple play is a rare feat on the field of play, but there is something about "good things coming in threes". On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Professor of Bible, James Coakley tells us that the Bible has some pretty significant threes--among them, The Trinity--Father, Son and Holy Spirit and 1 Cor. 13--Faith, Hope and Love. On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Professor of Bible, James Coakley joins us to talk about "cliffhangers", those books in the Bible that end with uncertainty (at least from the standpoint of the reader). On Wednesday's Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI Professor of Bible, James Coakley joins us to point out how the scriptures are rich in themes and metaphors that interconnect with each other; they are a true study in amazing intertextual tie ins! Dr. Coakley uses the example of a spatial metaphor like "Up and Down" that is used in everyday language and also in scripture. Those who study linguistics look at how these metaphors impact meaning, and allow us to make comparisons across texts. This is just another way to freshen up our bible study! Dr. Jim Coakley, Professor of Bible at MBI joins Mornings with Eric and Brigitte on Wednesday to show us yet another way to freshen up our bible study with "Early On" information. Looking closely at the content situated at the beginning of a Bible book (early on information) serves as a sort of “table of contents” for what will be unpacked in further detail later on in the book. This "early on" content prepares readers for later content, identifies key themes, and tracks what the Biblical authors (human and Divine) are making most prominent. In this episode, I discuss air fresheners and why the idea of freshening the air with chemicals is a complete misnomer. Putting chemicals into the air to change the smell of the air you breathe, is not freshening the air, it is polluting the air. Pollution is defined as the introduction to the air of a substance which had harmful or poisonous effects. This is precisely what those fragrances you think you can't live without are doing. Freshening the air would be opening up the windows to your home, car or bathroom. That is freshening the air, making the air more desirable and hospitable to our bodies. --- Want to know what some of the food staples are for me and my family? Dr. Jim Coakley, Professor of Bible at MBI returns to Mornings with Eric and Brigitte on Wednesday to share some bible study tips with us! If you want a new, fresh way to approach your bible study, look for the author's use of "repetition". One of the ways that a biblical author can make a concept or theme more prominent is to use a word or a phrase repeatedly in an account. In biblical times, repetition was used as a strategy to cue the reader to think more deeply and deliberately in a certain way. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Even though we don't experience the typical seasons in South Florida, Fall is when we think about the change of color in the leaves as winter approaches. Authors sometimes use colors as a way to make the text more vivid and enhance the way the story is told. Wednesday on Mornings with Eric and Brigitte, MBI professor, Dr. James Coakley tells us that in subtle but significant ways Biblical authors use colors in the background of the telling of the account that add a dimension to how readers should be viewing the text or characters within the text. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Dr. Jim Coakley, Professor of Bible at MBI joins Mornings with Eric and Brigitte on Wednesday to show us yet another way to freshen up our bible study with a study of "Dialect." Just as we are aware of various dialects (southern, Bostonian), style of speech (formal “thou” and informal “you”) and tone (boastful or deferential) so the same language phenomenon is present in the Bible in subtle and not so subtle ways. The official linguistic term is “register” but it is a helpful item to track as we read the Scriptures. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pastor Newms: [0:05] Okay we're in the 5 minute countdown, five minute countdown. Pastor Bill: [0:12] Are you it won't show me your face in. Pastor Newms: [0:22] Out here I'll stop sharing my screen. Pastor Bill: [0:23] Because you're sharing your screen so all I can see on my phone is what you're sharing there you are. Pastor Newms: [0:32] Five four and a half minute countdown why does the stream say were for over for when one of them doesn't exist anymore. Pastor Bill: [0:42] I don't know that's a good question I couldn't even begin to tell you what's going on in there. Pastor Newms: [0:51] I'm like wait why is this a four over four? Pastor Bill: [0:54] I can go look at it and see what it says but. Pastor Newms: [0:56] No no it's probably just it's 4 over 4 because the fourth one is turned off so it's four over four. Pastor Bill: [1:01] So it's like the fourth one is doing exactly what it's supposed to be doing which is nothing. [1:11] So if you want a perfect pod cast just you know four over four score on your broadcast just turn off all your channels. So they're they're just you know dead channels and then you're going to go four over four. [1:41] I did some more work on my desk and I can talk about that now or we can talk about that on the this week in the life of Pastor Bill. Pastor Newms: [1:51] Let's talk about it now because that's boring. Pastor Bill: [1:56] My secondary desk the one that's that's this way not the one you can see here this way kept sliding everywhere, so I had to read it attached all the legs and and put a support bar across to attach better just the other desk and I put some double sided foam down in there to hold it in place so now it's all secure so when you move this part of the desk this part moves to they're all. I wont hit the desk again because I don't know that probably and so and then I started thinking about my cup holder which I had here. Because. Pastor Newms: [2:34] I do like I do like that you're using things like here and this when we're just over the voiceover part and they can't. Pastor Bill: [2:41] Oh crud nobody can see anything yet okay. Pastor Newms: [2:48] Maybe the segment should wait till life in the in the time of. You said it a couple times and I was like that's fine that's fine you know that okay that's fine that's fine and then I was like no now he's touching the desk I'm not. Pastor Bill: [3:05] Yeah I know now motioning to places you can't see me okay so I had my filing cabinet over here on the left hand side of me underneath my desk, and then I realized that I could move the filing cabinet over here in front of me below the camera underneath the monitor underneath and put it at an angle and then I have leg room and when my PC comes in it's thinner than the filing cabinet some for the PC under the desk on my left hand side, then I was like oh but I've got a cup holder right over top of where I'm talking about now putting my PC. So I uninstalled my cup holder and moved it over here to the other side onto my secondary desk where it's now mounted, um over here in front of me instead of over here behind me. Pastor Newms: [3:56] Which is good because that means you don't have to turn every time you want to drink but that means you can constantly see your drink which is bad. Pastor Bill: [4:09] Okay you need one minute as we're going live pretty quick here but. You're talking about how much time we have before we go video fresh. I meant to change my shirt I didn't change my shirt I'm not gonna change my shirt now. Pastor Newms: [4:30] Well you are a big disgrace no mask on. Pastor Bill: [4:34] Spread my germs all over the place we will we will lesson on the shirt, why didn't make this design now I did make this design but I didn't make this work. Pastor Newms: [4:50] Meme 15. Pastor Bill: [4:52] Meme yeah I made the Mimi into a shirt but I didn't create the meme. What did we say this is season episode 30 40 34. Pastor Newms: [5:04] We said 34 yeah why we got one second. Pastor Bill: [5:08] Some type in the welcome message into the. Pastor Newms: [5:10] Hi they can see you now don't pick your nose. Pastor Bill: [5:13] Hello and welcome to the recording of Season 3 Episode 34 of the Berean Manifesto. Newms why are you picking your nose. Pastor Newms: [5:23] Because I told you not to. Pastor Bill: [5:23] On live camera did you tell me not to pick my nose I didn't hear that. Pastor Newms: [5:27] I said we're live don't pick your nose and so then I start picking my nose I did. Pastor Bill: [5:31] It's you start picking your nose all right so Roxanne on YouTube is responding to the question about the shirt what's next she said we will white whale and then that's all she typed. Pastor Newms: [5:45] Yep. Pastor Bill: [5:46] So we know the next section is Rock You, in the original song but we don't have been in this song where no mask on your face you big disgrace spread your germs all over the place, which I sold the whopping one shirt of and that one shirt I'm wearing so. [6:12] Fancy huh so tell me about your shirt. Pastor Newms: [6:14] Yes question what about it. I got it at Walmart it says Be Kind yeah and every time I read it I think rewind but it doesn't say rewind which is funny. Pastor Bill: [6:34] Is it a pride. Pastor Newms: [6:37] I don't know it wasn't in the pride section it was just in the hey it's a tie-dye T-shirt so it might or might not be. Pastor Bill: [6:57] So you were talking about Pride a week or two ago and I've really been wanting to bring it up on the broadcasts and have you repeat what you said, you were talking to I think you were talking to Heather or you were talking to Tina about pride in about it not being, but about it being more of a relational. Pastor Newms: [7:30] So what I had said me and Phoenix were talking about the fact that. Pride and and how it's not about being proud of. [7:49] The like cuz she was like she was saying how I feel like I'm I'm, I don't understand this and I've tried to research this and I've tried to research that and I don't get why. [8:05] Actually I don't know if it did anyway that is true I don't think our Walmart might not have had a pride section to be honest but the. The aspect of you know she was asking you know they were they were saw a playlist a pride playlist and it was, she was listening to it and she's like I don't understand this song isn't about, anything about Pride it's not about anyone who lives the lifestyle and I said you know it's not about, pride is not about being proud of the lifestyle it's about being proud of the people, that's are part of the lifestyle and proud of their accomplishments in the world and things they've done it's not about being proud just because they are it's about, you know it's kind of the show you know look at everything we've done not, look at us necessarily and that's something that a lot of people get wrong they're like you know this is flamboyant parade. Pastor Bill: [9:27] And it's it's easy to get that impression because of the parade and the flamboyant and and that you know all the things that go on at these Pride parades in these Pride events and you get this impression that honestly isn't, indicative of why pride month exist. Pastor Newms: [9:52] And it's not indicative of the entire Community there are some people who do feel that way and I can't speak. Pastor Bill: [10:00] Just like okay and to put it in perspective just like the, people going out and rioting and looting buildings, aren't indicative of everyone who believes that black lives matter and just like a capital rioters, who did incite violence when they got to the capital aren't indicative of every, Republican you know throwing and so forth. [10:40] That just made it sound like I thought the people that were flamboyant at the pride parade were negatively behaving but that's not what I meant I meant only in the, they don't represent how everyone in the community feels or behaves not in the I think they're doing something wrong by being themselves, so what happens when you have there as they see it and on Twitch it that identifies you as Pastor Newms typing. Pastor Newms: [11:15] Yeah yeah so someone in the world asked they do not have a Twitch account, but are watching on Twitch currently and we're wondering how they could, be if they had a question, what they could how they could ask it and so I was like what happens if I type in the Discord, and so that, I just sent the Discord link to that person and if that person clicks on that Discord link then they will then be part of that Discord and they can see the channel called Church online live that they can type a question into an ask is that enough way of explaining something without me actually explaining it in there. Pastor Bill: [12:08] Hmm. Pastor Newms: [12:10] So to answer that question rain just type in the Church online live if you have a question. Pastor Bill: [12:16] She's on the Discord now. Pastor Newms: [12:18] She just joined it so because she does not have a twitch because I have not allowed her to so because I'm. Pastor Bill: [12:29] Did you have a question Rayne. Pastor Newms: [12:31] She doesn't yet she was just wondering. Pastor Bill: [12:33] Oh she doesn't get just if something comes up. Pastor Newms: [12:36] Yes she had she had texted me in Discord of how do I ask a question if I can am I allowed to ask a question it's like yes, so now she knows how to ask a question without having to use, to ask to send me a message to then send a message to the world and if you happen to notice because you're watching you'll notice a very distinct thing that is very similar to Biggs and Rayne and the reason, be because their family that's why they both Rock the gfg title so anyway. Wait this is the whole world yes this is the whole world anyone watching can see what you type which is fine which is fine it's perfectly acceptable. Pastor Bill: [13:33] Yeah we're live on CNN right now just so you know. Pastor Newms: [13:36] We're not live on CNN it we're only live in several places but it's anyone who decides to come join us we are excited for it to happen. Rayne can see what is typed someone asked through the Discord yes yep she can see. Pastor Bill: [13:56] We just called yes anything typed in YouTube or Facebook or Twitch automatically is put into the Discord server for everyone there to see. Pastor Newms: [14:09] The disc the Discord server is actually the Discord plug-in you found is actually phenomenally cool didn't even know it existed thoroughly like it. Anyway. Pastor Bill: [14:24] Yay technology. Pastor Newms: [14:25] Yeah technology. Pastor Bill: [14:27] Yeah so I just thought we need to bring things like this up because, we are an accepting church we accept anyone whether denomination or whether Christian or not atheist Pagan everyone is welcome, nthe only stipulation is be respectful and stay within the boundaries of well we're talking about this you know, and then we are an affirming Church meaning we affirm people we affirm you you you tell me, your gay, nthen you're gay if you tell me you're a lesbian then you're a lesbian if you tell me you have certain pronouns that you want to be used and that's what I'm going to use all you know because, I respect and I love you I love people and so we. Pastor Newms: [15:24] It's very important and and we Bill is, Pastor Bill is very much better at not dead naming people than I am but there are the occasions will I will use people's real names as opposed to their tags or the names that they, ask to be called evil because I the ones that I know in real life outside of that, I find it funny because I have lots of friends that Go by different names in different places and we just Billiam just walked out of the room he's gone now, he just he's dead. Pastor Bill: [15:58] Someone has adjusted my air conditioner again, so I'm having to turn my fan towards me because I'm burning up so okay my friends turned so we. Pastor Newms: [16:09] So you know it's funny because it's like you tell me you've changed your name I'm really good at, a trolling with that but there's some, thing that happens between if I don't call you that name all the time, in real I have troubled eliminating the real life too over, so Rayne to answer your question on why does it say it's a bot it's because they typed in a different Channel, whereas Gerg typed in Discord and so anyone else that types outside of Discord Discord the Discord bot brings it in it's not that they are it's the disc or bot handling it to answer that question but if you type in Discord it is not a Bot, Q Gerg Pastor Bill just typed what I typed earlier testing it because I've had actually typed we were alive before into Discord so um. So Pastor Bill where's the card let's get it over with. Pastor Bill: [17:37] We haven't even done your week this week. Pastor Newms: [17:41] Our week was was was it's been better since Sunday we talked about how my weekend was a little rough last week, but, it is a little better it's been a pretty good week this week just lots of stuff going on we're just busy and it's annoying but. Pastor Bill: [18:06] And you got that sponsorship this week right. Pastor Newms: [18:09] I did not have not sponsored by Belvita, Charmander is not trying to sell you Belvita or wavy Pringles, I'm just a fat guy and I didn't move them off my wife's desk before I went live but it's really funny because Phoenix is correct it does look like he's holding them, and selling them to you. Pastor Bill: [18:36] Think you got a sponsorship. Pastor Newms: [18:38] If anything I would hope it wouldn't be Belvita because. Pastor Bill: [18:45] Freshening. Pastor Newms: [18:46] I would I would prefer some of the drinks that I often have trouble getting because they get shipped to the wrong house because there, their website hiccuped and I still don't have my Sneaks after several several weeks and I mean caffeine withdrawals hardcore. Pastor Bill: [19:06] Yeah you need a sneak. I just used the word sponsorship you did a Sneak sponsorship and I need a Dr. Pepper sponsorship, and give me. Pastor Newms: [19:31] Sneak is actually um because we are on Twitch Sneak is actually easier than Dr. Pepper we just got to get more viewers so that, I just I would love free drinks. Pastor Bill: [19:48] Yeah if anybody get the Keurig Dr Pepper Snapple Group Keurig k p yeah Kirk Dr Pepper Snapple. Pastor Newms: [19:57] See and I rep Sneak even when I'm not drinking Sneak which is sad at the moment. Pastor Bill: [20:07] Yeah I'm really proud of my free hugs shirt. Pastor Newms: [20:10] Yes. [20:20] You redoing your office has been very good I've thoroughly enjoyed it, if only we can get you into our house that's bigger or you could have an actual office as opposed to just redoing your closet. We won't get into that today, sorry I got a new I got a new toy and I haven't got to hang it yet I bought everything to hang my new toy behind me it's going to sit it's going to sit right there but I don't have everything yet, I bought every everything's in that bag right there actually to hang it just didn't, so we'll let will let will let Gerg explain in chat what POG means I'm not. Pastor Bill: [21:12] Yeah we got people on on chat using yeet speak you need to explain what POG is there Gerg, what are you humphing about. Pastor Newms: [21:27] I'm humphing because we're old. Pastor Bill: [21:32] Well yeah that's how time works. Pastor Newms: [21:34] When when my. Little sister doesn't understand leet-speak. Pastor Bill: [21:47] Yeet. Pastor Newms: [21:49] I'm not I'm not calling it eats Peak its leet-speak it's the same thing. Pastor Bill: [21:53] It's not leet-speak is when you do the replace your E's with 3's & S's with dollar signs. Pastor Newms: [21:59] No it's to prove that your leet because you are Elite it's the same it's the same thought process where old. Pastor Bill: [22:09] Your butt's old. Pastor Newms: [22:11] Yeah same age as the rest of me but your butts older anyway. Pastor Bill: [22:18] Really anyway. Pastor Newms: [22:20] Yes Yeet like the word Heat. Pastor Bill: [22:24] I am saying it's because I'm always saying that to Gerg to poke at him to make fun of the words that he uses I call it yeet speak. Pastor Newms: [22:33] And I've not seen POG used without poggers so that's actually new to me as well I'm used to poggers not just POG so. Pastor Bill: [22:45] Wait what is poggers. Pastor Newms: [22:47] It's the same thing. [22:54] It's poggers that's poggers is where the where it started and Pog is what they've shortened it to no no she no she no no, she know we're not we're not. Pastor Bill: [23:22] Sunlight you're trying to call the pigs in and you'd forgot how to what to say so sue EU she. Pastor Newms: [23:32] Cheese no okay how was your week. Pastor Bill: [23:35] My week was all right I re re-did my desk like I was saying earlier in the lead-up, move my filing cabinet to make space for my PC that's coming moved my cup holder because I didn't want my drinks to be hovering over top of my new pc, because I thought that was a good idea to not have drinks over top of my PC. Pastor Newms: [24:00] Why. Pastor Bill: [24:01] Because it is quite the large investment for the church for us to do the things that we want to do, video editing and the the game times where we're going to be doing friendship evangelism and all that stuff it's quite the investment for the church so, I do with my week after much my whole week. Pastor Newms: [24:28] Yep oui oui. Pastor Bill: [24:30] All right. Pastor Newms: [24:31] Well well that's that's not necessarily true we did finish all of, I just I just completely broke my BlueStacks okay it's back we did spend the large part of the week watching all of Picard the whole ten episodes and all the Star Trek shorts that were attached to Star Trek discovery, and that was interesting I am really really just overall upset about the whole situation to be honest, upset about the whole enjoying Star Trek situation I'm sick and tired of I don't know what's going on I'm becoming a different human or something and it's just irritating me, because I do. Pastor Bill: [25:33] But it's a whole different kind of Star Trek it's not like the old shows that you didn't like before. Pastor Newms: [25:51] I'm just frustrated. Pastor Bill: [25:55] So when we finish Discovery we're going to have to hit Enterprise and then the TOS and then TNG and. Pastor Newms: [26:03] I don't know because I don't know enough about. Pastor Bill: [26:06] Deep Space 9 and then Voyager. Pastor Newms: [26:09] I don't know enough about it to even agree with you I don't know I'm just watching the things you tell me to watch at this point and I don't like it and I hate you and myself and. Pastor Bill: [26:23] I'll met note it's time. Pastor Newms: [26:39] Don't like when you're pausing this long before you ask the question because you know you're going to get in trouble for asking the question what's the question. Pastor Bill: [26:48] I don't think it's valid what's left on your bucket list I don't have a bucket list so that's it. Pastor Newms: [26:53] I don't either I don't don't know put it on the bottom no don't wasteful that's. Pastor Bill: [27:05] Wasteful. All right what's the favorite thing you've bought this year. Pastor Newms: [27:25] 2021 the best thing I've bought, I don't remember what I've bought this year and what. Yes yes probably my favorite thing I bought is my new acts I do thoroughly like my new acts that is true Biggs the laptop was bought last year H puff Phoenix, my computer was bought towards the end of last year, I think I can't remember but probably my new throwing axe yes it probably is. [28:14] What about you. [28:19] Just say everything in the office. Pastor Bill: [28:24] I'm okay so I got it I gotta think like personal purchases versus purchases that I've made on behalf of the church so like, yeah I picked out and bought this desk set up, but I didn't actually buy it it was bought to do Church work on so the church bought the desk right and then my shelves I picked them out but I didn't actually buy them my wife bought them as a Father's Day present, so of all the things I'd have to say it's my drawer pulls and I'll have to pull one out. Pastor Newms: [29:01] Do you even have one you can show. Pastor Bill: [29:04] Yeah but I had to get over to my filing cabinet to pull one out so I can show it well that's not good. Pastor Newms: [29:10] Speaking of those speaking of those drawer pulls are we going to end up having to play WoW again. Pastor Bill: [29:16] I don't know. Pastor Newms: [29:19] I just thought about that because you really enjoyed that back in the day am I going to get pulled back into that. Pastor Bill: [29:24] Possible. Pastor Newms: [29:35] Do do do do do do do. Pastor Bill: [29:37] Okay so if you're listening to this podcast. Pastor Newms: [29:41] Du du du du du du. Pastor Bill: [29:43] Holds a square knot that up, I was trying to get into filing cabinet all right so if you listen this back guess you won't be able to see this but if you're really really interested in seeing what my drawer pulls look like you can go check out the video on Facebook YouTube twitch, it'll be there so this is my drawer pools look like it's a lion with a little door knocker, I love these I got them on wish wish.com, I've got them on my drawer that you know my new drawer for my desk I've got them on my bed drawers, that's my favorite thing that I bought for myself this year so there you go. Pastor Newms: [30:31] And in case you don't know why that would be a while reference myself and billion both played the alliance in WoW, when we played together and the alliance is main Insignia is, an eagle so that's why it's important wait no it's a lion that's why it's important. Pastor Bill: [30:55] I was like what. Pastor Newms: [30:57] Just waiting to see if you'd say anything or if chat would first but it was you so. Pastor Bill: [31:14] Okay so today in this episode we are talking about something. Pastor Newms: [31:23] So let me just say before we start Billiam, we talk about what we're going to talk about before we talk about it of course cuz if you'd be terrible people if we didn't because that's not how you do research, now some of the research is off the cuff yes but you know overall we discuss what we're going to talk so, Billiam tells me you know we're discussing this and I was like Oh you mean something I understand greatly and have rarely ever had okay cool yeah let's go for it. So continue Billiam. Pastor Bill: [32:05] So I have this saying in the way that we approach The Ekklesian House and whether we approach the Berean Manifesto and it is we're not like Moses with our veils on, and and what I'm talking about is when Moses would be in the presence of the Lord in the tent of meeting his face would begin to glow, and he'd come out of the tent of meeting and his face would be glowing and in order to not draw undue attention to himself, he would put a veil over his face and hide that glow that glory that glow, but then the scripture says when the glow would fade and the presence of the Lord was no longer on Moses he continued to wear the veil to conceal that the glory had faded, we're not going to do that we're not like that we're not perfect we're not going to pretend to be perfect we don't have it all worked out we don't have it all put together we're not going to pretend like we do so tonight we're talking about internal peace, which is an area that we both struggle with an area where neither one of us, has it all put together in an area where we're both quite vulnerable. Pastor Newms: [33:33] It's an area we don't have very well put together it's an area we barely have put it's like that statement of you know train of thought I don't have a train I have a bunch of monkeys and there's no tracks you know that's that's so me and Pastor Bill both struggle with, anxiety and we both you know I say struggle with not because I think that anxiety is. [34:13] Things that we deal with on a daily basis that's what I mean by struggle not like we struggle with it because it's bad to have anxiety because, some people you know some of us have anxiety built-in like our brains, the chemical imbalances you know medicine helps but nothing's purpose nothing's perfect so I'm not saying struggle like oh we struggle working through salvation or we struggle you know, different ways it's a struggle literally a fight every day to, push forward through it and we both sometimes fail, hard both of us within the last two weeks, even have both in certain days been like I just can't even hang out, do you want to hang out or can we just go to bed at 8:00 a.m. 8:00 p.m. you know we're like the girls both of us have put the girls to bed where it's 8:30 can can I just say good night or do you actually need me to be awake and we're both sitting there going no let's just go to bed, so Pastor Bill: [35:29] Just we're done we're done. Pastor Newms: [35:31] And as as Biggs is pointed out on Twitch you know there's other ways that your internal peace can, shaking other than anxiety, Biggs and I I'm just a hodgepodge of Mental Health, struggle with anger management as well and road rage and things like that and as he said I did just buy a new axe because, sometimes things don't end peacefully, is I like to be prepared in case they don't but that's that's that's my take on it we work on it we continue and now Bill get all spiritual on it more than. Pastor Bill: [36:13] Not necessarily I mean peace internal peace for me has always been this really elusive thing, beyond anxiety beyond depression I face a lot of Torment mental torment in my you know just, and just to just to not paint too dark of a picture but I did a lot of things that I regret before I got saved and so, I've always felt a lot of Torment about all of those things and you know knowing that I'm saved and forgiven and and all these things are great for me but what about the people that I influenced outside of me you know that kind of the thought kind of torments me and then I feel like, I torment myself about every decision after I make it like do I go do I go a or do I go be and whichever one I choose I always choose what I think is the best, and then for days weeks sometimes months I will feel mourning for the other decision as if the other decision had died and now I'm I'm in mourning over the decision that I didn't make and so I'm constantly just tormenting myself you know, in my brain about everything. [37:42] So peace is a really fleeting concept and hard for me to grasp and when I do feel peace, it's never because I did something right or said something right or understood something right it's like. [38:02] It's like when you step outside and you catch a whiff of a smell, and you just catch that one little whiff and then the wind blows it away and you don't smell it again, that's peace or you you hear a lot of music and it's just a lot of noise different songs playing and suddenly your ears will tune in on one Melody, and it sticks out for just a few seconds and then Fades away into the cacophony again, that's how I have experienced peace internal peace, it's just these fleeting moments that they come and then they disappear just as quickly I can I can manufacture peace, for a few seconds but it's always fleeting it doesn't last, for instance Ricola we open a bag of Ricola, and there's that smell in the bag and you can just Progressive the world fade away and all that exists is the smell in the bag of Ricola or the first drink of Dr. Pepper after you haven't had one for a week or two, or sometimes a cup of coffee. [39:30] And all of these it's just fake peace manufactured peace it doesn't actually reach the depth of my soul, and that peace that reaches the depths of my soul is that fleeting peace like the smell on the breeze or the like the melody that stands out in the music it's like those, and so when we look at the Bible and read the Bible there's a lot of things that are said about peace Jesus talks about leaving you His peace, and in His almost in the same breath when he says I didn't come to bring peace I came to bring um you know certain brother against brother and and parents against sons and it's also that same breath raised like I came to bring you peace but don't get too relaxed because I didn't come to bring you peace, but I'm going to leave you my peace that I didn't come to bring and so even then it's like I just, can't wrap my brain around what am I supposed to feel and then we get to things like Philippians chapter 4, and verse 7. [40:46] It says and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and Minds in Christ Jesus, and I'm like you know I couldn't have said it better the peace of God. [41:05] Which is completely uncapable of you to understand how to grasp to or experience will guard your heart. [41:21] Yeah I get you I totally I totally relate to that saying in there Paul, but then when you move on we get advice on what to do when we don't, feel peace when we feel, trouble underneath feel like we're ship Out on the Ocean being tossed to and fro when we feel like the world is burning around us or, um all those things and then so we're going to read verses eight through. [41:59] 9 verses 8 and 9 of chapter 4 of The Book of Philippians it says, finally brothers and sisters whatever is true whatever is honorable whatever is just whatever is pure whatever is lovely whatever is commendable, if there is any moral excellence and if there is anything praiseworthy dwell on these things, do what you have learned and received and heard from me and seen in me and the God of Peace will be with you, so when when we first selves and we don't have that internal peace I'm not saying, there's a quick fix or an easy pill for you to swallow or 12 step program and I'm not saying there's anything wrong with you if you don't feel peace because Lord knows we just. Pastor Newms: [43:02] I lost your voice now you're back try again. Pastor Bill: [43:07] Oh I didn't hear what you said either Lord does I'm not there I don't have peace you did that you can hear me now okay, um I don't have peace I'm not there I don't have this all figured out but we do have this device from Paul, to focus on things that are true focus on things that are honorable focus on things that are just and that were just as you know righteous or, um Justified focus on things that are pure that focus on things that are lovely focus on things that are commendable you know things that are like you deserve an attaboy, commendable add a boy you know focus on the good focus on the things that, I feel like I'm about to bust into a song and be like raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens but really you know, it's kind of true what do you make it a face for. When the dog bites when the bee stings when I'm feeling sad I simply remember my favorite things and then I don't feel so bad, Biggs is yelling no on Twitch Newms is slowly backing out of his camera come on guys I'm not a bad singer. Pastor Newms: [44:34] No you're not it's just it's a song. See peace got Dr. Pepper. Yeah I mean it's not it's the truth it's rough like and we do have to focus on the good and sometimes that's really really hard, and sometimes it's borderline impossible sometimes you struggle to find, any good in any situation and it's like there isn't any good in this one there's no good there's no good there's not, and sometimes it feels like that for years and then all of a sudden it's like oh. [45:26] Well I'm still not happy about it but okay I guess you could say that might be good, you know there's always been times when I, tend to lean towards the negative, it's one of the things that people love and hate about me in the professional world because like, people ask me do you see anything wrong with this because, they know it's at a point where it's like okay what will this break, or okay what is this going to come because my mind it's the first place I've gone so while you guys are all talking about how good it is for the company and what it's going to do and where it's going to make money or how it's going to do this or every time I do this with my finger it can't figure out what I'm actually supposed to be focused on in the camera but you know, my mind's already gone to okay we can't do it because of this reason this reason this reason this reason and this reason we got this in this we need to look at that needs to be thought about are we sure that's even legal like people are, and that it's got me in trouble a lot in the professional world but on the same token it gets me, hey at least you thought about that you know. Pastor Bill: [46:51] To me that makes you a go to, hey I've got a plan here poke holes in it so we can fix it before I present it and make a total fool out of myself. Pastor Newms: [47:01] I'm not going to say anything about what you said. Cuz I can go there. Pastor Bill: [47:12] Not going to go there huh. Pastor Newms: [47:13] Banging together. Pastor Bill: [47:15] One. Pastor Newms: [47:16] Which is I will not speak ill of anyone else and I there's no way I can agree with you in a way that I will not speak ill towards other people because. Pastor Bill: [47:28] It's the thumper rule. If you can't say nothing nice don't say nothing at all. Pastor Newms: [47:37] I know I tried really hard I failed miserably this week when I actually had to go into the office and then, immediately went to sleep when I got home because I forgot how much faking liking people wears me out because I love people because, God Has Told. Pastor Bill: [48:00] Love is not the same thing as like. Pastor Newms: [48:02] I have to but like I buy shirts like this it's like be kind be kind about be kind. Pastor Bill: [48:09] Be kind. Pastor Newms: [48:10] What have you thought about and you're like I don't wanna look at that little voice in the back of my head I don't wanna and so um. It was there's a couple times on the day I actually went into the office I was just like whoo, I'm glad I, you know. I'm glad I work from home cuz, who and I'm very upset with you I'm very very upset with you right now because of what Gerg just said in chat. Pastor Bill: [48:58] Right he's like the the what rule the what the what and I'm like what do you mean the what rule, oh my wife Miss heard what I said and thought I said the flamethrower were rule. [49:19] That is true. Pastor Newms: [49:20] It's not inaccurate. Picture everyone else has a flamethrower wearing you will be nicer, your wife's not wrong like it's very close very close. Pastor Bill: [49:37] Let's just imagine everyone else's armed and you'll be kind to everyone. Pastor Newms: [49:41] Which you live in Texas there's not much of an imagination there. Pastor Bill: [49:43] Really and now you don't have to have a license to conceal carry so hey yeah. Pastor Newms: [49:55] So something came up the other day and, I was talking about a particular political group that you had never heard of and so, they are the Log Cabin Republicans and their political group that are going to be at Franklin, which is a city here in the Nashville area where lots of, famous people live in stuff they their pride is going to have a group of the Log Cabin Republicans to which billion goes huh Republicans. Pastor Bill: [50:40] Why don't you be a Republicans that Pride. Pastor Newms: [50:42] As a non-political person it was very funny to watch his expressions of that doesn't make any sense and I start reading what they believe and he goes, how are they even Republicans I'm like it's he's like they sound like Libertarians I was like yeah but they, it's and one of their big things is you know life is hard on the lgbtq community, and there are fit there have been lots of attacks there's been lots of assault there's been lots of lots of things have happened in the lgbtq community so because of that one of their platforms is there should be no, um need for registration or anything for concealed carry in all 50 states so that way everyone should be packing at all times and it made me maybe go, argue necessarily but you know it's just it was that fuck you you made me think about it again where it's like can I do explain what a log cabin republican was this week that was fun. Pastor Bill: [51:48] Yeah I heard of that I didn't and the thing that inspires their name I just. Pastor Newms: [51:56] Well there's two aspects that, there's two aspects the one is it's after Abraham Lincoln and the fact that he pushed for quality, all the time that's the main stated reason and then the second reason is, there's lots of rumors of lots of things that happened in log cabins with our founding fathers and you know, I wasn't there I can't speak to it so but. Pastor Bill: [52:30] You know I really just don't care either way and just is none of my business how Abraham Lincoln spent his time I just can't free time it just it doesn't matter to me. Pastor Newms: [52:45] You know it's one of those things that me and you have always tried to strive for which we're not perfect in any way but trying to strive for looking at. What someone has done, and who they are trying to be not anything about them, you know it doesn't matter anything about a person do you suck, or not if you suck I would prefer if you're not part of my life. Pastor Bill: [53:24] If you go suck somewhere else. Pastor Newms: [53:26] It Go suck somewhere else as Biggs said we all know the documentary that came out a couple years ago he was also a Vampire Killer. Pastor Bill: [53:35] Not a bad movie though. Pastor Newms: [53:37] Really wasn't so like me and my wife me and me and Zaidi went to go watch, the Abraham Lincoln Vampire killer and we went in going like this is going to be bad we just need a date night like it was one of those situations like this is going to be and then we come walking out going, how was that actually good. Pastor Bill: [53:57] I was thinking why do I want to see cool what is going on. Pastor Newms: [54:02] How did that even happen like this the premise is terrible like we went in expecting super campy and just awful which if you go into a camping movie expecting a camping movie, Life is Beautiful like all the you know all the mighty pythons are great because they're Mighty pie. Pastor Bill: [54:23] You went into Spaceballs expecting some kind of Star Wars spin-off. Pastor Newms: [54:27] You'd have a problem let me be. Pastor Bill: [54:28] Do you have a horrible time if you wanted to Spaceballs knowing what you were going into. Pastor Newms: [54:34] If you go into any Mel Brooks movie expecting anything serious, cuz I don't think he did a single serious movie that I can think of they were all great. [54:57] I'm going to let you read that comment that was just made because it's accurate as well. Pastor Bill: [55:01] I read it but I don't know that it fits into the conversation anymore at this point. Yes that was you. Pastor Newms: [55:13] That's not what she said. Pastor Bill: [55:14] She was imagining you know she thought I said flamethrower Rule and so she was thinking that that the rule is if you use a flamethrower against people in your home just expect a house is going to burn down. Pastor Newms: [55:28] It's kind of like that don't throw rocks if you live in a glass house you know unless never mind I'm not going to make a 13 Ghosts reference there but you know good luck so I'm glass doesn't break. Pastor Bill: [55:43] Sometimes don't don't use atomic bombs if you say live on the planet that you're using them on that's my advice but. Pastor Newms: [55:55] Can argue. Um so yeah peace is important and we should we should struggle towards it and we, oh okay so speaking of peace and fidgeting and things like that I have multiple fidgets all over my desk you guys see me play with them all the time well, took my fidget and put it over my finger but then forgot that when you look at the camera things are opposite and so all of a sudden it caught my eye and I couldn't figure out how the fidget jumped to the other hand, that's not how cameras work so I lost my train of thought because, the fidgets jumped I'll let Bill go on out its Bills turn to talk. Pastor Bill: [56:54] 30-second buffer. Pastor Newms: [56:56] Nope we're 3 minutes from that. Pastor Bill: [56:58] Yeah so you know and it's this some it's the search for peace that you you end up finding yourself, looking for fulfillment in things like alcohol and drugs and sleeping around and, is because you want you are you crazy, this sense of peace and you know why it's a joke but I like the phrase um drinking is borrowing, peace from tomorrow morning you're you know you're drinking now and having a good time now and in the morning you're going to pay for it with the hangover your borrowing from tomorrow morning. Pastor Newms: [57:47] Unless you're an alcoholic that has no side effects that are negative and feel better the next day you know. Pastor Bill: [57:52] Not all of us are you but not all the strength of Newms. Pastor Newms: [57:55] Just saying the analogy doesn't work I have to stay away from alcohol for a whole nother reason but. Pastor Bill: [58:07] Set search it says search for peace that causes people to go down these paths that these destructive paths, in your like we talked about you know one drink, is not it is not a sin one cigarette not a sin one almost anything one is not a cent well one murder is obviously a sin. Pastor Newms: [58:33] But one hit isn't. Pastor Bill: [58:36] But when hitting someone once isn't yeah. Pastor Newms: [58:38] All right so when you go to like the 15th and 20th line hmm. Pastor Bill: [58:41] Yeah that's when you cross the line and and so you know we try to emphasize the point that. It's the effects of sin the long-term effects of sin, is the thing that we try to warn people against. Hi Anyanka (my kids cat) did you want to be on the broadcast. [59:07] Yeah did you come to be to be did you want to go viral because you want to bet she's been like this most of the day he's kind of cuddly today which is, for him he doesn't he's not ever cuddly. Today is he wants to be held he wants to be around me. Pastor Newms: [59:31] So I had a rough day a couple days ago where I was not feeling good at all just upset and went to bed early and, mr. Amy last night comes in here to yell at me at 2 a.m. Because I had not gone to bed yet and then when I went to my bedroom I tried to pick up my phone and he pawed me and then got right here, we're like I couldn't put anything between us and forced me to go to sleep, so sometimes they know what we need better than we do it's all I'm saying they're of because he's straight up like each time for you to go to bed you're going to your, dig the pie in Drag Me to the bedroom sit on my chest and not let me do anything because it was bad timing and I needed to he was not wrong I was staying up too late doing something else but you know. Pastor Bill: [1:00:34] Yeah. Pastor Newms: [1:00:35] So sometimes our Animals help us find our peace. Pastor Bill: [1:00:38] Sentence and then sometimes they bite the crap out of you and you struggle with the urge to eat them across the room. Pastor Newms: [1:02:08] Aside from questions we also love questions. As we continue to think about our fresh start one clear area that we're going to hit is that of, well what should we even be focusing on. That's where goal setting comes into play and while I did touch on this in the original fresh start episode, I think it's worth giving more consideration. When we think about goals there's a ton of different ways to think about them, but at their basics, a goal is simply a future result that you are directing your effort. Now there are a lot of different ways that we can go about setting those goals and we'll get into that more next week when I go through some of the various frameworks. But before we get into those frameworks it's important to understand how goals actually work and why we even want to set them.Support me on PatreonConnect with me on:FacebookTwitterInstagramor ask me a question on my Contact PageFind the full show note at HackingYourADHD.com/freshstartgoalsThis Episode's Top TipsThere are 4 mechanisms we need to keep in mind when trying to complete our goals, those are focus, effort, persistence, and strategy. We can think of goals fitting into three broad categories - outcome, performance, and process. Outcome and performance goals focus on things we can measure and process goals focus on the things that we do.With an any benefit approach to our goals we're going to end up trying to focus on doing everything - instead, we need to prioritize those things that are most important and do them before we even think about those lower priority goals.
Dr. Jim Coakley, Professor of Bible at MBI joins Mornings with Eric and Brigitte on Wednesday to share some Bible Study Tips with us! If you want a new, fresh way to approach your bible study, try looking for some repeated elements at the beginning and end of a chapter or a book in your bible reading. The repetition of a concept, clause, or sentence at the beginning and end to tie a message together gives it closure and acts like "bookends".The Bible does not communicate in a random, haphazard fashion but is artistically structured!
