We open the show on a wiffle ball game in the backyard. Adam's pitching. Jude's at the plate — right-handed, like always. Adam throws a sinker. Jude cranks it. Home run. On dad. In front of the whole family. Adam shakes it off, gets ready to deliver some justice on the next at-bat… and Jude steps over to the left side of the plate. "Jude, what are you doing?" "Dad. Just pitch the ball." Brushback pitch. Second swing — gone. Out of the park. Left-handed. Turns out Jude found out earlier that day he can bat from either side and forgot to mention it. Adam took it like a man — somewhere between humiliated and proud. Dave's response: this is why he still brushes his teeth left-handed. To stay coordinated. (Adam also has four cavities. Unrelated.)This week we're sipping Laphroaig Càirdeas 2024 — Triple Wood & PX Casks. Aged ten years in ex-bourbon and quarter casks, finished in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks. 52.4% ABV. Dark cherry-amber in the glass — uncharacteristic for an Islay. The classic peat smoke is there, then it opens into ginger, fruit, sherry sweetness. Càirdeas means friendship in Gaelic, which is exactly where the episode is headed. About $130-$140. Limited release, every year a little different.Mary update: she's off the paralysis medicine. Still heavily sedated, but her eyes are open. She's looking around. Oxygen, blood pressure, heart rate — all trending in the right direction. More good days than bad right now. Adam and Lady Haylee are grateful. Keep them in your prayers. Then we get into it: spiritual friendship, through St. Aelred of Rievaulx — the 12th-century Cistercian abbot whose book Spiritual Friendship is basically the Catholic doctrine on what a real friend is. He opens it with this line: "Here we are, you and I, and I hope that Christ makes a third with us." That's the whole thing.Adam walks through the bell curve of zeal every man hits when he starts taking his faith seriously. Phase one: you read everything, you want to tell everybody, you should start a podcast. Phase two: you realize you know almost nothing and you go quiet. Phase three is where Aelred meets you — somewhere between "let me lecture you" and "I'm not qualified to say anything." The answer isn't to forfeit the zeal. It's to ground it in humility. You don't have the answers because you are not the answer. Christ is. But you do have your own experience, and what He's done in your life is yours to share.Aelred's rules for friendship cut right through the noise. Spiritual friendship is not a teacher-student relationship — both men give, both men receive. Don't sacrifice your own vocation to be a "spiritual father" to someone else. When you meet, it's not the depth of the conversation that matters most, it's the consistency. And the cheat-code question for getting under the surface: how's your prayer life? Try that on a buddy this week and see what happens. We close on Aristotle and the Eucharist. Nicomachean Ethics lays out hierarchies of friendship — friendship of utility, of pleasure, of virtue — but you can't be an authentic friend if you don't first know the good. And the good, ultimately, is Christ in the Eucharist. If the man you call your friend doesn't live a Eucharistic life, you may have a buddy. You don't yet have a spiritual friend. Make one. Be one. Bring him to Christ.Raise your glass.TOPICS COVEREDJude's ambidextrous wiffle ball ambush and the inevitable day every dad gets cranked onAdam's left-handed toothbrushing regimen and his four cavities (related, probably)Why the Càirdeas release is one of the most interesting Islay bottlings out thereAn update on baby Mary — off the paralytic, eyes open, more wins than lossesThe bell curve of zeal — and why most men quit halfway up the back sideSt. Aelred of Rievaulx, the 12th-century Cistercian abbot the Church basically credits as the doctor of friendship"Here we are, you and I, and I hope that Christ makes a third with us" — the opening line of Spiritual FriendshipWhy spiritual friendship is not a teacher-student relationship and why treating it like one ruins itThe danger of becoming the guy who turns every conversation into a lectureDon't sacrifice your own vocation to play spiritual father to someone else'sConsistency beats intensity — and why a Pelagian attitude toward your men's group will wear you out"How's your prayer life?" — the question that breaks past small talk in under thirty secondsVulnerability as a man's strength, not his concession to a cultural buzzwordWhy one man's honest confession in a group does more for the listeners than the speakerLady Haylee and Lady Pamela both telling their husbands, in different houses, the same thing: you're a better man when you come back from those groupsSubsidiarity in friendship — the smallest circle is always the most important circleAristotle's hierarchy of friendship and why you can't be an authentic friend without knowing the goodThe Eucharist as the prerequisite for real spiritual friendship between menMake a friend. It's Casual Friday on The Majority Report   On today's program:   Julie Menin, the multimillionaire Speaker of the New York City Council, is opposing Mayor Zohran Mamdani's budget proposal by responding to a moderate tax increase on the ultra-wealthy with cuts to city programs. No conflict of interest there.   Heather 'Digby' Parton joins the program to recap the week's news. Check out Digby's work at Salon as well as her blog Hullabaloo. Some things go together so well they've come to define the concept of togetherness Peanut butter and jelly or Bonnie and Clyde come to mind, but this isn't one of those times. In this episode, we explore two completely unrelated locations with only one thing in common: they're both haunted. First, we travel to St. Paul, Minnesota, where the elegant Forepaugh's Restaurant plays host to the spirit of Joseph Forepaugh himself, still wandering the dining room in formal attire. New brides, consider this your warning: keep an eye out for the ghost of Molly. We'll also stop at the Griggs Mansion, where as many as seven spirits have made the halls their permanent residence. Then we'll travel to Moundsville, West Virginia to Sanford Elementary School where the former principal, and the school's namesake, never quite left the building. Next, we'll visit the Archive of the Afterlife, which houses what can only be described as a collection of the deeply unsettling: among its exhibits, the haunted portrait of Annie Ledger and the electrocution cap from Old Sparky, the electric chair at Moundsville State Prison. My guest today is friend of the pod Blake Smith We talk mostly about Blake's recent essay for Colossus magazine, “The Education of the Broligarchy,” which is about what we can learn about the tech elite from what's become known as the Silicon Valley Canon, a widely shared list of books that all aspiring tech overlords should read. .Unrelated to that, I want to share an exchange I had on Substack notes with Vladislav Davidzon, an Eastern European Jewish writer now based in the US. It began when I posted this note. I don't really get the logic of Trump's decision to invade. Even if it goes amazingly well, even if a mature liberal democracy magically coalesces in the aftermath, there's no real constituency for that in the U.S. No one will care in nine months much less two years and nine months. His response: “You really are this clueless??”What's amusing to me in retrospect is that I genuinely didn't know which way he was going to go with this, given the dizzying array of theories about the motives for this war and the fact that you can't even predict, in this case, what someone will say from knowing which side of things they're on. Is it oil? Israel? Epstein? Dementia? Was it the frictionlessness of the operation in Venezuela?I'd already seen all of these theories, and more, all of them always offered with utter confidence, and I didn't know which one Davidzon would proffer. The answer was none of them. He sent to me a piece on Tablet by Park MacDougald that was an (utterly deranged, from my perspective) argument that the attack was a carefully calibrated action that followed organically from the very well thought through theory that Trump hold of US foreign policy in the middle east, “an overdue correction to decades of a flawed U.S. Iran policy instigated by Barack Obama that transformed the globe into a more dangerous and more unstable place than it has to be.”I said in response that this seemed deranged to me, given what we know about Trump's psyche, and Davidzon's response was this:You seem to be deeply integrated into a fanatical worldview - so it seems like a waste of time to engage with that- Trump derangement syndrome is as real as much as he skillfully and sardonically ratchets it up to make the people maddened by him froth at the mouth and attack him - however - Trump - whatever his other failures may be - is a radically perceptive and intuitive about power relations. He has brutal and unsentimental and predatory and often correct judgments of power relations. He is a savage bruiser and that approach is very well matched to the way that things operate in the Middle East.I recount all this not to try to dunk on Davidzon, but to reflect on the fact that 23 years ago I supported the war in Iraq.I was 26 at the time, and wasn't publishing, so I had the good fortune not be to responsible, even in the tiniest measure, for pushing us towards that terrible mistake. But my reasoned conclusion was that on balance it was a good idea. And I say “reasoned conclusion” earnestly, because even though it was a dumb thing to believe, I really did think it through in a fairly rational way. Doing something to upset the cruel status quo over, I concluded, was better than just tolerating or propping it up, as we'd seemed to cynically be doing for so long. Even rolling the dice had to be better than leaving Hussein in power, right? Right.Every war is its own thing, and I genuinely hope that somehow this war makes things better for the Iranian people, and the world, somehow. Maybe Davidzon sees things more clearly than I do. I doubt it in this case, but it's always possible. My point is that I continue to be amazed at how radically differently people who are smart and not overtly crazy can view the same set of facts.I find it fantastical that anyone could look at Donald Trump at this point and see what MacDougald and Davidzon see, which is someone capable of acting strategically in any way, even a brute intuitive way. Davidzon finds it “fanatical” that I view Trump this way, as a captive of his own broken psyche; this is evidence of my Trump Derangement Syndrome. There isn't a set of algorithms we can run this kind of dispute through in order to resolve who is right and who is wrong. What we can do, I think, is continue to put our ideas and premises and prejudices in genuine conversation with other people who see the world differently than we do. My experience has been that if this process is undertaken earnestly and openly, it tends to move one toward greater self-knowledge and wisdom. Which doesn't, to be clear, miraculously enable one to arrive at the right answer on thorny questions. But just the fact that there's a thing we can do, a process we can engage in, that will reliably move us toward greater self-knowledge and wisdom is pretty damned miraculous in its own right. In that spirit, hope you enjoy this conversation with Blake. Peace. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit danieloppenheimer.substack.com/subscribe

In episode fourteen of The Reimagine Edit series of the Passive House Podcast, host Zack Semke shares selected clips of conversations from the Reimagine Collective. Featured speakers in this episode include Beth Campbell, Ryan Abendroth, Mike Fowler, Kevin Brennan, Kara Haggerty Wilson, Nakita Reed, and Michael Ingui. In addition to specific deep dives into ventilation systems in hot and humid climates, designing for passive survivability during extreme weather events, and the challenges of marrying historic preservation and high-performance building methods, one theme courses throughout this episode's collection of snippets: The need for collaboration. Construction is a team sport, and a project's success depends on the ability of stakeholders with different sets of priorities to put aside their differences and cooperate. As our speakers note, learning to speak the language of different stakeholder helps to bridge the perceived divide between these priorities. Unrelated, but still exciting, our episode closes on some exciting news out of Massachusetts, where Passive House is booming. A nine-year-old girl is missing. Her mother is behind bars. And law-enforcement says the arrest is “not directly related.” In this episode of Hidden Killers with Tony Brueski, we break down the confusing and heartbreaking case of Melodee Buzzard, the California child who vanished in early October 2025 after a strange cross-country trip with her mother, Ashlee Buzzard. Investigators say the pair were last seen together on October 7 at a rental-car business in Lompoc, both wearing wigs before driving a white 2024 Chevy Malibu east toward Utah and Colorado. Melodee was last confirmed on surveillance near the Colorado–Utah border on October 9. When the car was returned to Lompoc on October 10, only the mother came back. Nearly a month later, on November 7, deputies arrested Ashlee Buzzard on a false-imprisonment charge, accusing her of preventing another person from leaving a location. Bail: $100,000. Officials insist the charge is not directly related to her daughter's disappearance—but the timing has left the public and analysts asking what this really means. Tony Brueski walks through the timeline, the investigative logic, and what the arrest could reveal about behavioral patterns, digital forensics, and the continuing search for Melodee. This is not speculation—it's a fact-driven breakdown of a case that exposes how confusing and fragile child-protection systems can be when secrecy and control take hold. Suppose you drove between California and the Utah–Colorado border from October 7–10. In that case, investigators urge you to review dash-cam or surveillance footage for a white Chevy Malibu with possible plate changes or occupants wearing wigs. //The Wire//2300Z November 4, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: ELECTION DAY IN NYC RIFE WITH BOMB THREATS AND OTHER VOTING WOES. WHITE HOUSE CONFIRMS CESSATION OF SNAP PROGRAM WHILE SHUTDOWN CONTINUES. CATASTROPHIC PLANE CRASH OCCURS AT LOUISVILLE AIRPORT.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-New York: Overnight and throughout the day, several explosive threats have emerged in New York City. Early this morning an explosive device was discovered in Manhattan, in the vicinity of West 13th Street and 6th Avenue. Public transit was halted for a few hours near the IED site, and the device was eventually rendered safe. No further information has been provided, but some reports suggest this was a false alarm.Otherwise, several bomb threats were called in to polling places around the city as the hotly-contested Mayoral election began this morning. Many different bomb threats were called in throughout New York and New Jersey, prompting the evacuation of polling places. Unrelated to the bomb threats, electronic voting machines went down in Cumberland County, New Jersey, which caused further complications on election day.Washington D.C. - This morning the White House addressed the recent court ruling on the SNAP program by stating that SNAP benefits will not be paid out until the government shutdown ends and funding is allocated for the program.Kentucky: This afternoon a catastrophic plane crash was reported at the Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville. A large shelter in place order was issued following the crash of a UPS aircraft shortly after takeoff.Analyst Comment: At the time of this report this is a developing situation, however this looks to be an extremely devastating crash. More details will come to light later on concerning casualties; right now the debris field is still on fire due to the aircraft being fully laden with fuel on takeoff. Initial reports from eyewitnesses on the ground indicate the port side engine was on fire as the aircraft was beginning to rotate, and by the time the aircraft had reached the end of the runway most of the left wing was engulfed in flame.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Overnight, a data breach of communications pertaining to the Huntingdon train stabbing attack was reported. An unnamed official in the Prime Minister's staff accidentally CC'd a journalist in an email chain that included emails containing unreleased details on the stabbing. In short, nothing particularly surprising was leaked. This error occurred due to the journalist having the same name as the person who the email was originally intended for, thus the mix-up. Perhaps the most interesting detail is that this leak highlights the stories that are being told even amongst government agencies. For instance, the non-public information that was leaked from the emails stated that the suspect (Anthony Williams) was not known to any authorities. This is interesting, because it points out that there is a bit of a communication foul up. The British Transport Police (BTP) had indeed identified Williams by name from his stabbing attack at the Pontoon Dock Station, and were actively looking for him in the day leading up to the train stabbing. At bare minimum this leak indicates that (at least in this case) no counterterrorism agencies were involved in the stabbing spree investigation that the BTP were actively pursuing at the time of the train attack. The attacker had gone on a stabbing spree for two full days prior to the train attack...three separate stabbing attacks occurred, but agencies were not talking to each other. Nor did any agency treat this stabbing spree as a series of connected attacks all perpetrated by the same person. This helps to explain the context of the leaked emails; the reason that Williams is "not known to police" is because counterterrorism agencies did not investigate his three prior st

In September of 2021 a suspect involved in a carjacking and attempted homicide led police in a vehicle pursuit that ended in a car crash in Farmington Utah.  The suspect fled on foot across Interstate 15 into a residential neighborhood prompting patrol officers to establish a perimeter and begin a search with a K9 unit.  During the search a single gunshot was heard,  South Davis Metropolitan SWAT and North Davis Metropolitan SWAT were both activated to conduct a house -to-house search. Operators discovered a bullet hole in a residence window, and shortly after, a male exited nearby home in a vehicle. He was stopped and informed operators that his family was being held hostage and that the suspect had sent him to check for police. As operators moved toward the residence, a juvenile female escaped through a window. Debriefing the father and daughter, it became clear that three more hostages remained inside the home with an armed suspect. Negotiated side and a handgun was recovered next to his body. My guest today is Lieutenant Andrew Smith. Andrew began his law enforcement career with the Utah Highway Patrol in 2008. In 2011, he left the highway and began working for the West Bountiful Police Department. He joined the South Davis Metropolitan SWAT team in 2012 and eventually moved to the Bountiful City Police Department in 2013, where he worked his way through various assignments and promoted to the rank of lieutenant and team commander of the South Davis Metropolitan SWAT team. Anders held numerous leadership positions in the department, including FTO, lead scout, entry team member, and assistant team leader, and is currently the South Davis Metropolitan SWAT team commander. He's been honored with numerous unit citations as a member of the police department and SWAT team, including his involvement in two hostage rescue operations and two Bountiful City Police Department chief stars, one of which was for his response to an active shooter at a local junior high.Contact Info:Lt Andrew Smith – asmith@bountiful.govBooksLegacy by James Kerr – ISBN-13 - 978-1472103536

On today's podcast, the fellas discussed Western Conference contenders, goaltending, the Jays' run, and much more.We kicked off the Friday episode of ONR with a delicious debate about the Western Conference contenders and whether any of the teams with Stanley Cup dreams have gotten better. Outside of maybe the Vegas Golden Knights, who locked in Mitch Marner as their big free agent play, there aren't many other clubs you could say legitimately got better. Maybe that's the boys drinking the July Kool-Aid, but everyone on the podcast still feels bullish on Edmonton's chances to get through the west.Next, we kicked off the news segment of the podcast with a quick recap of the limited news items that had occurred over the last week and speculated on whether we would receive any new updates over the next handful of days or weeks. With nothing happening, we looked at some quotes from Corey Perry about leaving Edmonton, Warren Foegele's wedding, and ran through a few quotes from Stan Bowman about the goaltending. Finally, we wrapped up the Friday episode of ONR with another round of Ask the Idiots, betting talk for our friends at bet365, and Hot and Cold Performers to look back on the week. With just over two months left until the start of the 2025-26 season, the guys spent the bulk of the Friday episode talking about why we should feel confident heading into this next season and how the Oilers are a much different hockey team this time around. Post-Gazette sports columnist Paul Zeise reacts to reporting from Steelers insider Gerry Dulac that the Aaron Rodgers signing and George Pickens trade this offseason were unrelated events as far as coach Mike Tomlin, GM Omar Khan and the front office were concerned. Was it wise to think of the moves separately? Or would it have been interesting to see Pickens work with a veteran like Rodgers across from DK Metcalf? And what should we make of external evaluations that have the Steelers with one of the worst WR rooms in the NFL without Pickens? As Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods look to fill the void he left?

Lliuya sought approximately $17,500 from RWE, representing 0.47% of the estimated $4 million needed for flood defenses, corresponding to RWE's estimated share of global emissions since the industrial era began. On May 28, 2025, the Higher Regional Court in Hamm, Germany, dismissed Lliuya's lawsuit. The court acknowledged the legal principle that major greenhouse gas emitters can be held liable for climate-related damages. However, it concluded that the specific threat to Lliuya's property was not sufficiently imminent to warrant compensation. While Lliuya did not secure the compensation sought, the court's recognition of potential corporate liability for climate damages sets a precedent. This acknowledgment may influence future climate litigation, encouraging individuals and communities to hold major emitters accountable for their contributions to climate change.MM: HahahahahahahahahaMusk says SpaceX will decommission Dragon spacecraft after Trump threatElon Musk Melts Down, Claims Trump Is In The "Epstein Files" and That's the Reason They Haven't Been ReleasedElon Musk Declares That He's "Immediately" Cutting Off NASA's Access to SpaceMusk Privately Complaining That His Immense Donations to Trump Didn't Even Buy Him Control of NASAElon Musk claims ‘without me, Trump would have lost the election'Assholiest of the Week (MM): Proxy advisorsZevra TherapeuticsISS added, “...the board's concerns about having a former CEO on the board and potential disruption are valid.”Out of 92,594 active directors in MSCI data from February, 3,123 are tagged as “former executives” at the company they're on the board of522 US companies are on the list - FIVE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TWOThat includes at least one company - National Healthcare Corp - with FOUR former executives on the boardIt also includes 104 large cap companies - like Hewlett Packard, with 3 former execs!Glass Lewis highlighted, “Mr. Regan has limited, dated, and unrelated public board service,”Egan-Jones also questioned the relevant expertise of Mangless' nominees, stating, “…we do not believe Mr. Regan's background in proxy solicitation offers meaningful value in the context of Zevra's boardroom.”Unrelated public board experience?? Subscribe for full episode The MAGA attack on government jobs, takeover of government agencies, and purge of supposed “DEI” and “woke” professionals has a long history in the US. Julian uses old-timey newsreels, biographies, and events in the public record to trace the lines from 1919 to today, making stops at the so-called Red Summer's “race riots,” Red Scare communist panics, Hollywood Blacklist, and Lavender Scare that fired thousands for being presumed gay. Unrelated to any of this completely useless and repressive paranoid bigotry, actual Soviet spies were being apprehended and prosecuted—even then everything was not on the level. The prosecutors had their own hidden skeletons and shady bedfellows, even as they claimed the patriotic moral high ground. At the heart of this history is a lineage of men who never let truth get in the way of gaining, and wielding, power and cruelty. Julian uncovers a surprisingly direct lineage of dirty-tricks demagogue succession, from Woodrow Wilson to A. Mitchell Palmer, to J. Edgar Hoover, to Joe McCarthy, to Roy Cohn, to Roger Stone, to our current president. Editorial Note: The Paul Robeson clip that starts the episode is a re-enactment by James Earl Jones for the Zinn Education Project. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Mike Elk, founder of the Payday Report, to discuss the recent news out of Brazil that former President Bolsonaro has been indicted. Then, they speak with Jacob Silverman, co-author of his latest book Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud, and writer at the AM Quickie newsletter, to discuss Trump's nomination of Howard Lutnick to be Commerce Secretary, and his associations with crypto. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's destruction of Lebanon, Israel's sanctioning of Haaretz, the Biden-Trump transition, Trump's developing cabinet, Trump's attacks on trans people, and Trump's plan of attack on Jack Smith, before diving a little deeper into the growing tension between the US-Israel alliance and the international order upholding the ICC's warrant for the arrest of Netanyahu. Mike Elk then joins, diving right into the major developments in Brazil's criminal case over the far-right (and Bolsonaro-administration-) backed coup and recently-revealed assassination in the wake of Lula da Silva's reelection in 2022, with the indicting of a massive portion of Bolsonaro's military advisors occurring last week in the leadup to the indictment of Bolsonaro himself this week, all at the hands of the Brazilian Supreme Court. Elk then walks Sam and Emma through the development of the investigation, with incredibly poor criminal operations UNRELATED to the coup allowing the Court to easily swing snitches over to their side, before stepping back to unpack the evolution of the fascist attacks on Lula and the Brazilian left, from the corrupt imprisonment of Lula and his successor, through the backlash to said political imprisonment, and into Bolsonaro's coup attempt in 2023. Mike expands on Bolsonaro's clear connection to the 2018 assassination of Rio de Janeiro city council member Marielle Franco, before wrapping up by noting the stunning impact this entire affair (and, more importantly, the Court's willingness to act on it) has had on completely decapitating the threat of the Brazilian far-right. Jacob Silverman then walks Sam and Emma through the major influx in crypto spending in the 2024 election cycle, despite the industry's recent stutters, and touches on the potential issue of an industry dominated by criminal conspiracy and transactions shaping US politics, before zeroing in on the particular role of one Tether, perhaps the largest cryptocurrency on the international level and a central investment of incoming Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. After expanding on the incredibly shady, and fully not evidence-backed dealings of Tether, Jacob wraps up by unpacking the ultimate goal of the crypto industry in completely liberating the movement of money, freeing it from the shackles of absurd concepts like “fraud” and government regulations, and the role the Trump administration can play in making this goal a reality. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Milo Yiannopoulos talk gay sex, not having sex, Laura Loomer, straight sex, abstinence, and definitely not being gay with Tim Pool, before chatting with Guy from Massachusetts and Carrie from New York about certain similarities between Milo and one Nick Fuentes. BRB Forever presses Sam and Emma on the language around Israel's genocide in Gaza, Walt from Wyoming unpacks Progressives' major wins in Wisconsin, and Jordan Peterson teases out the conservative ideology behind the notoriously anti-fascist Lord of the Rings, plus, your calls and IMs!
