The Dad Edge Podcast (formerly The Good Dad Project Podcast)
In this special episode of the Dad Edge Podcast, I'm joined once again by my son Ethan for another honest and often hilarious father-son conversation. This week, we're kicking off our August series focused on helping young men grow into adulthood with integrity, resilience, and intention. We unpack what it really means to become a man in today's world and why so many guys stay stuck in a boyhood mindset well into their 40s and beyond. Ethan shares firsthand experiences from his first full-time job, launching a car detailing business in high school, and learning life skills that go far beyond the classroom. We talk about emotional regulation, grit, finding meaningful work, and how to support your kids without micromanaging their growth. Whether you're raising sons or just want insight into building a better father-child bond, this episode is packed with perspective, wisdom, and a few laughs. TIMELINE SUMMARY [0:00] - Welcome to the podcast and the mission behind the Dad Edge [1:30] - The origin and theme of our father-son conversations [3:06] - Why August is all about helping boys become men [5:00] - The First Phorm 8-week challenge and tools to get started [7:01] - The moment I realized no one was coming to save me [8:22] - Ethan's experience at his first real job in an auto shop [11:30] - Learning to grow up through the CAPS entrepreneurship program [13:42] - How Ethan started and ran a successful car detailing business [17:07] - Signs a boy is becoming a man: long-term thinking, embracing discomfort [20:37] - The danger of staying in a soul-sucking job and the power of choice [26:30] - Stories of perseverance from Steve Jobs, Colonel Sanders, and J.K. Rowling [30:21] - Ethan's reflections on helping others break limiting beliefs [35:45] - Why emotional regulation is key to maturing into manhood [39:00] - Learning to pause, respond, and reflect through challenging days [43:27] - How fathers can support sons without overstepping [47:03] - Using better questions to develop critical thinking and self-direction 5 KEY TAKEAWAYS: 1. Becoming a Man Requires Intentional Growth The shift from boyhood to manhood doesn't happen automatically; it's shaped by life experiences, learning responsibility, and the conscious decision to grow up. No one is coming to save you, and it's up to you to take ownership. 2. Let Sons Struggle, But Be Their Safe Place Growth often happens in the discomfort. As dads, it's tempting to step in and fix things. But real development comes when we let our kids wrestle with problems while knowing they have a safe place to process and recover. 3. Embrace and Teach Emotional Regulation Maturity is marked by how well we manage our emotions. Learning to pause, breathe, and choose a thoughtful response instead of reacting impulsively is a life skill every young man needs to master. 4. Work Experience Teaches More Than Just Skills From oil changes to running a business, Ethan's journey proves that real-world jobs and responsibilities develop grit, confidence, and a clearer sense of what one wants and doesn't want in life. 5. Success Is Measured by Fulfillment, Not Fortune We often think success means more money, bigger homes, or flashier titles. But as we explore in this episode, true success is found in happiness, strong relationships, and doing work that brings purpose, not just a paycheck. Mike Milan—better known as Cash Flow Mike—is a former state trooper turned serial entrepreneur who's built 14 businesses and helped generate more than $50 million in improved cash flow for clients. His “Home Run Financial System” has been taught to over 25,000 bankers, accountants, and business owners, specializing in unlocking hidden cash, controlling growth, and transforming profitability into real, usable money. On this episode we talk about: Early work ethic: Mike's first jobs included 5+ years as a dishwasher, busboy, waiter, and bartender—roles that forced him out of his comfort zone and developed world-class people skills he credits for much of his later business success. The people advantage: Why real-world, high-contact service jobs (sales, restaurants, bar tending, etc.) build skills and confidence that pay dividends for a lifetime—arguably more than most college classes. Career pivots, family, and mindset: Mike became a Texas state trooper after college, enjoying the physical challenge and structure. But with a rapidly growing family (four daughters!), he soon realized that even a "secure" government job—with mapped-out raises and guaranteed pensions—was never going to match their expenses or aspirations. The leap to entrepreneurship: Despite "golden handcuffs" and the risk of leaving behind a salary, benefits, and security, Mike left his state position at age 29. He candidly discusses the fear, sacrifice, and tradeoffs required—but also the freedom and upside that followed. How he did it: Mike's transition to business owner started with a janitorial company (using military and law enforcement skills for discipline and attention to detail). When a client asked him to help recruit reliable workers, he identified a more leveraged model—staffing and placement for hotels—which allowed him to scale without personally doing all the cleaning. The cash flow difference: Mike explains the practicalities of launching a business as a parent—leaning on savings, maxing out credit cards, and maintaining razor-sharp focus. He underscores how true cash flow (not just accounting profit) lets businesses—and families—survive and thrive. Actionable advice: It is never "too late" to start over. The stories of Dave Thomas (Wendy's) and Colonel Sanders are reminders that the entrepreneurial window is always open if you're willing to take the risk, sacrifice, and learn new skills. The Home Run Financial System: Mike's system transforms intimidating financials into step-by-step strategies for real-world business owners—because profit doesn't pay the bills, cash does. Family, finances, and risk: For listeners with mouths to feed and bills to pay, Mike unpacks how he navigated saving, borrowing, and mitigating risk—acknowledging that while it's never easy, the upside is worth it. Top 3 Takeaways Soft Skills Unlock Hard Money: Jobs that force you to interact with thousands of people (restaurant, sales, service) prepare you for entrepreneurship better than any textbook. You Can't Cut Your Way to Wealth: There's a limit to how much you can save—at some point you must focus on income expansion, risk, and leveraging opportunity. There's No Perfect Moment, Only a Leap: Whether you're 29 (like Mike), 49, or 59, the decision to leave "security" for self-employment is always hard—but it's often the right move, even with a family and established life. On this week's Extra Serving, NRN editor in chief Sam Oches and executive editor Alicia Kelso discuss KFC's new comeback campaign, which includes a mad-looking Colonel Sanders and an invitation for guests to share their input (plus free chicken). KFC has been in need of a comeback for a while; could this finally be the plan that works? Next they talk about McDonald's Snack Wrap launch, which reportedly led to a 15% spike in traffic on launch day. While this is a big win for McDonald's, Sam and Alicia temper their expectations for how this could perform for McDonald's in the long run. They then dive into a variety of value deals that rolled out in the past week — including Planet Hollywood's 1991 pricing plan, Taco Bell's $3 Luxe Value Menu, and Wendy's offer of free fries and Frostys — and wrap up with a look at what restaurant leaders should expect from Q2 earnings season. Finally, tune in to a conversation between senior food and beverage editor Bret Thorn and Chili's chief marketing officer George Felix. From Plum Creek With Love: A Little House on the Prairie Podcast
Remember the episode when they played Baseball and there was a giant brawl at the end? Or the time Nellie ruined a perfectly good wig or the time Colonel Sanders came to Walnut Grove? It's easy to forget, at its core, Little House on the Prairie is about the Ingalls family. And with over 200 episodes it's safe to say not all of them are necessary or contribute to the ongoing story of this Pioneer family. Join me in this special edition episode as I share my thoughts and feelings (after reviewing all my notes from making this podcast series) of what an ideal viewing of the series would be. From the Ingalls piling into their family wagon in Wisconsin to Laura and her Monthly Crew at the Wilder Boarding House, Little House on the Prairie has a bit off filler we can trim off.
SHOW NOTES: Here's just a part of the obituary of my friend and former subordinate, Francis X. McGuire from 2010: "...a unique man whose professional life began as a late night disc-jockey in New York City, led him to serve in the Kennedy White House, work for the ABC network (hiring Ted Koppel), to be on the ground floor side-by-side with Fred Smith during the Fed Ex start-up, and there with Colonel Sanders when he sold." In the mid- to late 70s he wound up working for me at a firm in Princeton, and even I didn't know what he was doing there, and our owner kept trying to fire him in cost-cutting fits, emerging from his office shouting, "Fire McGuire!" I forestalled that with quick thinking and fake assignments. I'm thinking of him now, because Fred Smith, with whom Frank was quite close, just passed away, which is notable because Smith is one of the greatest business leaders of my entire lifetime, in my assessment. So here's to Frank, whom I'm hoping Fred Smith is meeting again, because only God can tell what Frank is supposed to be doing.

If the legacy food giants won't evolve, Mason Dixie will do it for them – one honest, skillet-cooked meal at a time. When Ayeshah Abuelhiga founded Mason Dixie Foods in 2014, she set out to deliver what people are truly hungry for: clean, craveable comfort food made without compromise. No preservatives. No shortcuts. Just real ingredients and real flavor. Today, Mason Dixie offers a growing lineup of frozen biscuits, breakfast sandwiches, burritos, and fried chicken sandwiches – all made with fresh ingredients, real dairy, and no artificial ingredients, bleached flour or seed oils. The products are available in more than 6,000 stores across the country, including Whole Foods, Costco, Sprouts, Giant, Harris Teeter, and more. In this episode, Ayeshah shares how she's taking on the legacy CPG heavyweights by building a bold, next-generation frozen food brand. She dives into how Mason Dixie harnesses consumer insights, rigorous cost discipline and category whitespace to develop new products. She also breaks down how the brand is reshaping the definition of “natural” for modern shoppers, proving it's possible to scale with integrity, and lead with purpose, without ever compromising on what matters most. Show notes: 0:25: Ayeshah Abuelhiga, Founder & CEO, Mason Dixie Foods – Ayeshah and Ray chat about past conversations before the entrepreneur shares how operating outside traditional CPG hubs has allowed her Baltimore-based company to thrive with greater agility and efficiency, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. She reflects on Mason Dixie's buzzworthy Expo West appearance, where she dressed as Colonel Sanders to promote new products and offers a candid critique of the natural foods industry. The conversation delves into the brand's innovation strategy, including its expansion into sandwiches and burritos, and how the latter was developed to create a superior flavor and texture to existing products. Ayeshah explains how Mason Dixie benchmarks acceptable price points and only moves forward with products that can achieve cost efficiency through scale and criticizes large conglomerates like Tyson for their inefficient use of resources, while remaining open to partnerships that could help scale clean-label food. Beyond business, Ayeshah talks about how she finds purpose in the creative freedom of entrepreneurship and in mentoring underrepresented communities through nonprofit work. Brands in this episode: Mason Dixie Foods, Mike's Hot Honey, Uncrustables, Compass Coffee

If you're an entrepreneur, consultant, or business owner, the way you network, build your brand, and scale your business can define your long-term success. This episode of Building Your Leader Brand features Ivan Misner, the founder of BNI (Business Network International), who shares his journey from starting a local networking group in his garage to building a global enterprise with over 11,300 chapters in 75 countries. Whether you're looking to grow your business, refine your personal brand, or leave a lasting legacy, Ivan's experiences and strategies offer practical insights you can apply immediately.Three Key Areas Discussed
In this episode, Rode Dog and Karl Bryan dive deep into some of today's biggest “hot button” business topics, including Tariffs, AI disruptions, and industry insights for business coaches. They also mix in some fun with Canadian culture, hockey heartbreaks, domains as investments, and give practical advice for coaches looking to future-proof their businesses. Key Topics & Takeaways 1. Tariffs, Trade, and Global Shifts Rode Dog kickstarts with a question about tariffs, leading Karl to discuss how trade wars (like the US-China standoff) are shaking up global production strategies. Example: Apple's iPhone production moving from China to India. While tariffs achieved moving manufacturing out of China, it's not returning to the USA, and may result in higher costs for consumers. Karl predicts India could be the next global superpower due to its English proficiency, young population, and established legal system. 2. The Next AI Boom: Vertical AI Agents AI is evolving fast; Karl introduces the idea of "vertical AI agents" — specialized AI systems designed to automate and optimize niche business processes. Example: Instead of broad tools like ChatGPT, imagine specially-built AI tools just for onboarding new coaching clients or handling unique business tasks. Takeaway: Coaches and entrepreneurs should think ahead about how to leverage AI to streamline their own offerings or improve their clients' systems. 3. Industries Most (and Least) Affected by AI Karl flips the usual question—rather than only asking which industries will be disrupted, consider which won't be. Industries ripe for disruption: accounting, finance, healthcare (especially wearables/predictive analytics), cybersecurity, transportation (self-driving vehicles), inventory management, customer service. Industries less vulnerable: Pest control, roofing, painting—businesses unlikely to be targeted by tech giants or replaced by automation (at least, for now). Expect living and business costs to decrease over time as AI reduces overheads across sectors. 4. Adaptation Mindset: Fear, Anger, and Opportunity Major take-home: Don't let fear or anger about change (like AI) hold you or your clients back. Be proactive—learn, experiment, and adapt. Karl reminds listeners: successful entrepreneurs are lifelong learners. Don't get “owned” by past habits or anxieties—stay focused on yourself and actionable progress. 5. Opportunistic Investing (Stocks & Domains) Rode Dog puts Karl on the spot for a “stock pick”—Karl mentions Uber and Spotify as blue-chip plays, but heavily caveats this is NOT financial advice. Karl also shares his continued belief in premium domain names (.com > .net/.org/.ca) as a long-term, low-maintenance investment—with an eye on branding and digital real estate in the coming years. Note: For Canada-specific strategies, .ca domains are useful for patriotic/niche marketing, but .com still reigns for long-term value. 6. Humor & Human Touch The hosts riff on the heartbreak of being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan and the Canadian experience, adding levity and relatability for their audience. References to newsjacking (tying your marketing to current events), mindfulness, and living a long life (for maximum benefit from the AI age). Karl's Zen Moment / Closing Thought The two emotions most likely to stop you reaching your goals: Anger and fear. To escape the loop, focus less on the unchangeable past/fear and more on next actions. “You'll be remembered for what you refuse to give up on.” It's never too late to retool—Ray Kroc started McDonald's at 52; Colonel Sanders in his 60s. Focus on what you help people build, not just what you say. Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com What are five things Christian entrepreneurs need to know? Here are five things Christian entrepreneurs should keep in mind: followed up by 3 mistakes Christian entrepreneurs make. Biblical Principles must be a Foundation: Integrate biblical values like integrity, honesty, fairness, and stewardship into all business practices. This builds trust and sets a strong ethical standard. Ultimately wether or not your business succeeds… is secondary, what is foundational is that you make God look good. Lets just be honest, most Xn's don't know scripture well enough to run their life… so even more you should know it to run your business… life first - yes! Then your business! Faith-Driven Decision Making: Seek God's guidance in business decisions through prayer and discernment. Trust that God has a purpose for your business and align your plans with His will… But if you don't think that Jesus would make a decision based on your motives… than don't you make the decision. Serving Others: View your business as a ministry and an opportunity to serve others. Focus on meeting the needs of your customers, employees, and community, demonstrating Christ's love through your actions Balancing Profit with Purpose: While financial success is important, don't let it overshadow your mission and values. Find ways to use your business to make a positive impact on the world, whether through charitable giving, ethical sourcing, or community involvement. And here is a secret that has helped me tremendously: Don't have a goal of how much money you want to make… have a goal of how much money you want to give away. Not just tithe from your business, but give away to those in need… than work backwards from there. Community and Accountability: Connect with other Christian entrepreneurs for support, encouragement, and accountability. Sharing your experiences and challenges with like-minded individuals can provide valuable perspective and guidance. and like scripture says, find wisdom in numbers. Ask other entrepreneurs wether Xn or not to help you, steer you and invite criticism from them. 3 mindset mistakes a. You don't think there will be stress… being a Christian entrepreneur does not make anything easy. Jesus had stress… thats why he had to get away constantly and pray. He had stress in the garden of gethemene to the point where he had hemitidrosis. b. You don't think you will have to work as hard… you have the favor of God on your side… but you still gotta put in the work. Look you might have to work harder because you won't cheat, steal and lie… I don't know of any church or business that magically grew because they were christian. Pray like crazy, and work like mad. c. You won't fail… oh how I wish this was true… that is like saying because I am a christian I won't sin… yeah and hows that going for you. Yes you will get smarter and mistakes should be less and less, but you will fail. The average entrepreneur fails 6 times before he finds his niche! So try, fail, pray and move on. *Bonus: mistakes are from the enemy… maybe, but maybe not. Mistakes will allow you to learn, pivot and may make you a lot of money. Colonel Sanders bucket of chicken was actually a mistake he sold the buckets to one if his franchise because someone else bought them by mistake… and the franchisee Pete Harmon turned them into an iconic idea that sold millions of dollars of chicken and to this day still gives people a warm good feeling. Twitter was a pivot, PayPal was a pivot even Wrigley gum was a pivot.

As you get older, you can start to feel like you'll never achieve your dream or receive recognition for your contributions to a field, or that your best work is behind you.Mo Rocca has compiled stories that demonstrate that you shouldn't give up hope, and that no matter your age, the best may yet be to come.Mo is a humorist, journalist, and the co-author of Roctogenarians: Late in Life Debuts, Comebacks, and Triumphs. Today on the show, Mo shares the stories and lessons of entrepreneurs, artists, actors, and more who achieved greatness or adulation in their twilight years or had a new spurt of creativity when they thought the well had run dry, including KFC founder Colonel Sanders, the artist Matisse, a couple of guys who didn't receive their first war wounds until they were old enough to qualify for the senior citizen discount at Denny's, and even a virile 90-year-old tortoise.Resources Related to the PodcastAoM Podcast #849: Live Life in CrescendoSamuel WhittemoreJohn L.
