If you want to add a full dose of ‘Wow!’ back into your diving trips then you have to do muck Diving at Lembeh Resort in Indonesia. I just got back from a trip to the resort and I can say it is everything you have heard. There is an astonishing cast of weird and wonderful critters to be found – with new ones being added regularly. The picture to the left is of an extremely rare Festucalex Rufus Pygmy Pipefish my wife Giny took off of Bangka Island at Demak.The long flight to get there is more than compensated by the wickedly awesome diving experience, resort and staff. The Giant Kelp Forests off of California are a truly magical place to dive. It is very much like taking a stroll through a forest with light beams streaming down through the leaves. The sea life there is abundant and engaging. There’s everything from schools of fish, the Giant Black Sea Bass which is making a comeback to hyper active dive bombing Sea Lions. It’s their latest which utilizes the bigger brighter color screen – a real plus for those of us who have older eyes that need that sort of thing. There’s lots going on under the hood as well; multiple gases, multiple tanks for tech diving and the display is fully customizable. An American Underwater Odyssey: 50 Dives in 50 States is a book that came out in 2002 but it is still valuable today for finding unique dive sites in all of the 50 US states. Charles Ballinger took the journey across the US and dove each of the sites from carnival like rock quarries with sunken buses and helicopters to searching for Megalodon shark teeth in North Carolina. It’s all there for the diving.
