How did an economic system that was the result of largely uncoordinated and unplanned individual decisions come to dominate our modern world? This is the core question that my guest, Berkeley economic historian Trevor Jackson, tries to answer in his new book, The Insatiable Machine: How Capitalism Conquered the World (Norton, 2026). Jackson begins with the origins of the global monetary system in the fifteenth century and ends in the early twentieth century, when capitalism faced its most serious challenges from communism and socialism. While wage labor and financial instruments like loans and stocks feel unremarkable today, he reminds us that “it wasn't always this way.” Capitalism is not natural, timeless, or inevitable. Trevor Jackson is an economic historian at the University of California, Berkeley. He previous book, Impunity and Capitalism: The Afterlives of European Financial Crises, 1690–1830, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2022. Steven P. From his early days as a tap-dancing prodigy inspired by Gregory Hines to lighting up screens in Grown-ish and Superfly, Trevor has always been an artist who refuses to be pigeonholed. In this episode, he dives deep into his evolution from a Disney fan favorite to a sophisticated force in Hollywood. He shares insights from his time on iconic sets like Grey's Anatomy and American Crime, explaining his mission to portray complex Black men who transcend industry stereotypes. Whether he's discussing his dream of playing Marvin Gaye or his clinical childhood obsession with Michael Jackson, Trevor's commitment to authenticity and "excellent things" remains the heartbeat of his career. The conversation turns raw as Trevor breaks down his latest project, I Love You, Goodbye, which he boldly crowns “The Greatest Breakup Album of All Time." Written in a whirlwind two and a half week period of heartbreak and physical recovery, the album captures the honest, messy emotional vomit of a relationship's end. As he prepares for the Healing Out Loud tour, Trevor opens up about the therapeutic power of vulnerability, his brother's role as his creative right hand as Executive Producer and Mix Engineer, and his nostalgic wish for the days when fans had to drive to a store to truly value the music they bought. It's an unfiltered look at an artist who is finally finding his own voice by leaning into his pain and turning it into a collective healing experience. Without further ado, press that play button! Ian Von sits down with multi-hyphenate artist Trevor Jackson for a raw, high-energy conversation about passion, artistry, and survival through creativity. They trace Trevor's journey from tap-dancing kid in Indianapolis to Broadway's The Lion King, Disney, Grown-ish, Superfly, and his evolution into a fearless, genre-blending recording artist. Trevor opens up about how acting and music are “survival tools” that keep him sane, why effort and passion are frowned upon in this era, and how he's determined to bring them back front and center. He breaks down the real-life heartbreak and physical injury that birthed his new three-part project, starting with the EP I Love You, and why he calls the full album “I Love You, Goodbye: The Greatest Breakup Album of All Time.” From Brian McKnight, Boyz II Men, Prince and D'Angelo to country songwriting and BigXthaPlug, Trevor walks through his influences, his independence with UnitedMasters, and his frustration with the current streaming economy that undervalues music. They also get into Black men and grief, the illusion of limited “spots” for Black artists, and what it really looks like to stay authentic while navigating Hollywood and the music industry. The episode closes with Trevor answering fan questions (including from Ian's daughter), reflecting on Grown-ish and Grey's Anatomy, and sharing his dream role: Silver Surfer in a full origin story.

In the age of over-information and over-exposure what control do we have over our public persona? It's all about the personality, all about our profile, incessant, endless posts to every medium we can lay our hands on. After 25 years of DJing around the world,  the catchily title |-...-.|  seems like they've had enough of all that and switched to the exact opposite and put together a project with no real name, no real public persona or much else besides. But it's been getting noticed by the right people - Joe Muggs featured them twice in Bandcamp Daily this year, and their latest album "Deliveroo Studio Séances" is the piece that really caught our ear. "This is all about music being judged on its merit rather than ego or identity, transcending the audiences potential preconceptions and focusing on a sonic and visual journey. " The sound pulls from various places - you can hear bits of Aphex Twin, Burial, Daft Punk, and Weatherall in there. It's genre-fluid stuff that doesn't fit neatly into boxes, which is probably why the likes of Trevor Jackson and Prosumer have been supportive. The whole anonymous angle means the music has to speak for itself, which it seems to be doing. So it feels kind of counterintuitive to ask them any questions for this rather tasty mix they've put together of original material, intermingled with other beauties. But we'll do it anyway, hey. Before I take time off for the end of the summer, I had to give the LaFamilia some content, some motivation before the vacation. In #American Culture, #HipHopCulture & just overall #BlackCulture There is a lack of accountability, a lack of ownership. But thank you guys for your support and tuning into the podcast.  ✌
