On this episode I'm joined by Daniel Boyd as we discuss his newly commissioned work presented for 16 edition of the Sharjah Biennial, elucidated through the curatorial theme, to carry. Asking questions such as, what does it mean to carry a home, a history, a language, a legacy, and a lineage.Born in 1982 in Cairns Australia, Daniel Boyd is one of Australia's most highly regarded artists. In 2014, Boyd became the first indigenous artist to win the prestigious Bulgari Art Prize, for his work, Untitled (2014), that referenced Australia's long but little known history of slavery. The painting is both a personal and social account of history, Pentecost Island was home to Daniel's great, great paternal grandfather before he was taken as slave to the sugarcane fields in Queensland. Through his artistic practice, he seeks to negotiate the identity of art, history and cultural survival through his investigations of oppressed and colonial culture. Daniel has been showing in Australia and internationally since 2005, and he participated in the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, as curated by Okwui Enwezor. In this episode, Daniel discusses his installation for the Sharjah Biennial 16 and his use of black vinyl to create an immersive environment in the iconic star-shaped building, The Flying Saucer. He talks about his artistic approach, which engages with the history of modernism, the built environment, and First Nations Australian perspectives on placemaking. He also reflects on his responsibility as an Aboriginal artist to share his people's stories and how art can offer a counter-narrative to Australia's oppressive history. He elaborates on the importance of art in slowing down and engaging deeply, mentioning influences like the American artist Bruce Nauman and the Martinican literary titan and influential philosopher, Edouard Glissant. -------------------------------------------------------------------- WHERE YOU CAN FOLLOW ME AND SUBSCRIBE Website - Sign up for my newsletter https://lightworkco.com/ Instagram - Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/sadeolo/https://www.instagram.com/lightworkcompany/ YouTube - Subscribe to my YouTube Channel www.youtube.com/@lightworkco
Sawfish shark conservation might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of sharks, but Dr. Barbara Wueringer is here to change that. Co-hosts Andrew Lewin and Dr. David Ebert sit with Barbara to discuss her passion for sawfish and the incredible marine diversity in Cairns, Australia. Barbara shares her journey of starting her own organization, Sharks and Rays Australia, to maintain independence and focus on the species she loves most, the sawfish. Shark conservation takes many forms, and Barbara's approach is refreshingly hands-on and community-driven. We dive into the importance of local marine biodiversity, why certain sawfish species are overlooked, and how one marine biologist is making a big impact through education, research, and local collaboration. Whether you're an aspiring marine biologist or a shark enthusiast, this episode will inspire you with its focus on purpose-driven science. Welcome to Cairns, Australia and Dr. Mary Travelbest In this episode: FAQ is: Dr. Travelbest, What are the seven natural wonders of the world? Today's Destination is: Cairns, Australia Today's Mistake- Leaving my wallet in a taxi Travel Advice: Avoid single supplements when you travel. FAQ: What are the seven natural wonders of the world? Answer: One will be talked about on this podcast, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which is located by Cairns. The other six are: Aurora Borealis (also known as the northern lights) Harbor of Rio de Janeiro. Grand Canyon, USA Mount Everest. Victoria Falls. Parícutin, Mexico volcano Today's destination: Cairns, Australia It's a city in Queensland, on the tropic north east coast. The population is about 150,000 plus lots of tourism is happening here. Some of the world's most beautiful diving spots are here, on the Great Barrier Reef. It's known for agriculture, the port, and now a destination for worldwide travel. The best time to visit is spring or fall, as the tropical rainforest and climate is lovely nearly anytime. The people here are genuine and really easy to relate to. They are kind and personal and warm. You can meet them where they are and get to know them with a few nice greetings and respect for their surroundings. When I visited, I met several of the locals and they were all helpful and accommodating. I flew to Cairns from Brisbane, and stayed for about a week before flying to Alice Springs. The Great Barrier Reef was my destination and I enjoyed the boat trips Snorkeling with the turtles and seeing the many Islands.nI'd like to name all of the nearby islands, but there too many to name. Some islands are not for humans because they are protected. Here are three main ones, where you can spend the night if you want. https://greatbarrierreef.org/islands/best-islands-to-visit-near-cairns/ Fitzroy Island Green Island Lizard Island Besides the ocean, on land, you'll want to visit the Kuranda Scenic Railway. It's built into the mountain it seems in some areas. It's a train right through a dense rainforest, with steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls within the World Heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park. This 2 hour journey gives a view of Barron Falls, 15 hand carved tunnels, 37 bridges and waterfalls you will love. https://www.kuranda.org/listing/kuranda-scenic-railway Today's Mistake- Leaving my wallet in a taxi Today's Travel Advice- Avoid solo travel's single supplement fees when you travel
This is segment four of a five-part series which looks into the heart of domestic violence. In this episode, I have the privilege to speak with Thelma Schwartz. Thelma is the Principal Legal Officer at the Queensland Family Violence Legal Service (QIFVLS) based in the Head office in Cairns Australia. She has over 23 years of legal experience delivering critical services to victims within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in Queensland and the Northern Territory. This is an intimate, powerful and informative conversation in which we learn how Thelma's own trauma surviving childhood family violence makes her work a deeply personal and empowering experience. It is my privilege and honor to welcome Thelma Schwartz to Open Stance.

Music is by King and Queen of the Losers,Thank you again to Kyana Van Houten for letting me interview you. I am looking forward to chatting more about European travels (which we didn't even touch on yet!) Happy Mother's day this month & thank you to my mom for being such a wonderful source of support. May your garden never freeze and the deer never eat your flowers. As a final note, this month is AAPI History month because on May 10, 1869, the first American Transcontinental Railroad was completed, and that project was greatly created by Asian -Immigrant workers. Make time to check out art exhibits, screenings of movies like Minari, and PBS' Documentary simply called Asian Americans or watch lessons that aim to teach participants about Asian Pacific culture, such as Asian tea practices, Indian shadow puppets, and Taiwanese calligraphy. Please consider donating to Support AAPI communities and those affected by anti-asian violence: https://www.gofundme.com/c/act/stop-aapi-hateSupport the AAPI Civic Engagement Fund: https://aapifund.orgFinally, thank you for listening. Stay safe & Happy Travels.

Today I had the honor of speaking with Julie George. Julie is a rockstar based out of Cairns Australia. Over the course of 3 years, Julie impressively built up a portfolio of over 120 listings through cohosting, bringing in up to 550k a month! Julie recently sold her management company, Host My Home, to a larger conglomerate, Hometime for over 7 figures. Julie now is working as a consultant for property managers, promoting her book Million Dollar Host, and sharing way too much information that I'm surprised hasn't gotten her into trouble yet. (you'll see why in the episode) In this episode, Julie shares her strategy on identifying gaps in the market, a unique way of scaling a cohosting business, and so much more.
