What we're hearing across all sectors of agriculture is that having a reliable workforce remains a number one challenge today. Karen Gefvert, chief policy officer for Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative and Voice of Milk, says it’s an issue the organization is deeply engaged in. In talking with Stephanie Hoff, Gefvert notes that this has been a 40-year battle. She says the current system doesn't work for dairy. Dairy farmers need an entry-level workforce. The only program that can address that is H2A, but dairy is prohibited from using it.Not much moisture in the latest forecast from Stu Muck. Temperatures remain on track for the last few days of October. Muck also notes a statewide FFA Foundation Auction that's happening now.Knowing a company's origins and roots can help explain how they do business. Pam Jahnke talks with Ashley Huhn about how the Steffes Group actually got started, and why they take pride in creating their own systems not just relying on third party services to handle business. Paid for by Steffes Group.Wisconsin dairy farmer, John Rosenow, has been a vocal proponent of immigration reform for decades. His dairy operation in the Waumandee Valley of western Wisconsin relies heavily on immigrant labor. Rosenow has joined a newly formed coalition called "Grow It Here" that's trying to advance meaningful immigration reform for agriculture. Rosenow says of his 18 full-time workers, 13 are from Mexico. Today's H2A visas don't work for dairy. The market's feeling more optimistic today after a weekend full of trade announcements out of SE Asia. John Heinberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend tells Pam Jahnke that it's good news for corn, soybean meal, pork and beef. There's also still a buzz about potential trade developments with China. Still the gorilla in the room according to Heinberg.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Mike Berg is taking a page from his father's playbook on the 500 acres he owns in Lafayette County. Berg is one of the finalists in the Leopold Conservation award cycle. One of the reasons he's being considered is the care and management he deploys on the driftless region he oversees. The Pecatonica River flows through his property and has caused a lot of issues over the course of time. Berg has installed all kinds of land management strategies to try and keep soil in place when the Pecatonica overflows. Pam Jahnke gets the story. Warmer temps during the day - but the threat of freezing overnight - is what Stu Muck is focused on. Muck says he thinks a killing freeze will impact northern Wisconsin as soon as tonight. Brady Zuck is a beef producer in Ladysmith that's concerned about what Argentinian beef could do to his domestic beef market. He talks to Ben Jarboe about the undeniable fact that U.S. consumers are still buying beef despite higher prices. That's why he's frustrated that the Trump Administration is talking about bringing in that beef to lower consumer prices. Zuck tells Jarboe that he depends on these "good times" to allow him to weather difficult years down the road. Freezing temperatures are not good news for Wisconsin potato growers. Ryan Walther from Alsum Farms says a freeze could introduce some bad chemistry to potato storage. Cody Koster, dairy analyst with EverAg says reopening the Farm Service Agency side of USDA is breathing a little life into the marketplace this morning. Koster says the latest global dairy report cast a negative shadow on U.S. prices. The world price for cheese and butter continues to sink on growing supplies. Is there still holiday demand out there? Koster says he thinks there may be - but it has to show itself pretty soon to be able to actually be used during the holidays.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Return of the Show This week on the podcast, Brian and Darryl are talking about the finales of Alien: Earth and The Terminal List: Dark Wolf (remember those shows?). Then delve into a baby pool of Gen V season 2. Finally… Tron: Ares. Episode Index Intro: 0:07 Tron: Ares: 5:26 The Terminal List: 14:33 Alien Earth: 28:18 Tron: Ares (2025) Tron: Ares Release date: October 10, 2025 (theatrical) Director: Joachim Rønning Screenwriter: Jesse Wigutow (story also by Wigutow) Producers: Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, Steven Lisberger Distributor: Walt Disney Pictures Music: Score composed by Nine Inch Nails. Runtime: ~1h 59m (119 minutes) Genre: Sci-fi / action / adventure Cast Jared Leto as Ares (Program) Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Hasan Minhaj, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn (classic role) Plot Summary (Premise / What We Know) Premise: A sophisticated Program, named Ares, is sent from the digital Grid into the real world on a “dangerous mission,” marking humanity's first direct encounter with sentient A.I. Conflict: Ares is deployed to retrieve Kevin Flynn's permanence code (or a code enabling A.I. extension) from a rival tech CEO, Eve Kim. Ares gradually develops emotions, shifting the mission's stakes. Visuals & Style: Heavy neon, digital effects, light cycles, digital-real world blending. One trailer labels it “Filmed for IMAX.” Music / Sound: The score by Nine Inch Nails. They released a track “As Alive As You Need Me To Be.” Reception (early): Mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, ~55% Tomatometer, but high audience score (~87%). Production notes: Filming took place in Vancouver, wrapped ~May 2024. Considerations The premise is intriguing (bringing a sentient A.I. into our world), but early reviews note that while the visuals are strong, the plot is sometimes thin or formulaic. Because Tron has a cult legacy and visual identity, expectations are high; missteps in character or plot substance tend to stand out. The Nine Inch Nails score is a bold choice (replacing Daft Punk's iconic Legacy sound) and could either elevate or distance fans depending on taste. The bridging between digital reality and human reality is always a tricky balance — the narrative will need to ground its sci-fi concepts in human stakes (emotions, morality) to avoid feeling hollow. The Terminal List: Dark Wolf (Amazon Prime) Series origin: A prequel to The Terminal List, based on the Jack Carr novel and characters. Creators: Jack Carr & David DiGilio Finale / Plot Summary In the finale, Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch) and James Reece rejoin forces to expose and dismantle a deep conspiracy that's been manipulating events behind the scenes. In one key sequence, Ben lures Iranian forces into what they think is a trap (a cabin in the mountains outside Tehran) — but it's a reverse ambush. Using hidden defenses, he turns the tide. When the soldiers breach the cabin, Ben's counterattack ignites, intercut with a Pink Floyd “Brain Damage” cue (a stylized flourish) After the finale, Ben's surviving allies spread out across Istanbul, Tehran, and Virginia to address the remaining threads and avenge fallen comrades. Reception / Notes The finale leans hard into action, retribution, and vengeance, with less room for emotional reflection. Some praised its boldness, others saw it as standard action fare wrapped in swagger. Because Dark Wolf is tied to The Terminal List universe, many viewers also weigh how it sets up or reframes earlier entries. Ratings Series Finale Out of 5, Truthful Conclusions Daryl: 4.5/5 Brian: 4.49/5 Series Out of 10, You Don’t Take a Man’s Wings Darryl: 8.3/10 Brian: 7.89/10 Alien: Earth (FX) Series creator / showrunner: Noah Hawley Episode title: “The Real Monsters” Writers: Noah Hawley & Migizi Pensoneau Director: Dana Gonzales Original air date: September 23, 2025 Runtime: ~47 minutes Franchise placement: It's the first TV series in the Alien franchise, set ~2 years before the original Alien film (so circa 2120) Season & Finale Summary Over the season, Wendy (a hybrid human-robot) and her brother Hermit (aka Joe) have been navigating a crash of the spaceship Maginot on Earth, corporate machinations (Prodigy vs Weyland-Yutani), and the threat of Xenomorphs. In the finale, several factions converge at Neverland (the Prodigy research facility). Arthur (a hybrid) gives birth to a second Xenomorph before dying, and the “adult” Xenomorph attacks. Meanwhile, Wendy and the Lost Boys forcibly take control of the facility, locking up Boy Kavalier, Dame Sylvia, Kirsh, Morrow, and Atom Eins in a cell. Wendy summons a Xenomorph to guard them. Joe is nearly fed to a single-eyed creature (“ocellus”) but survives; the ocellus ends up at Arthur's corpse on the beach, potentially taking him as a host. Wendy in the final moments stands over the locked cell and says, “Now, we rule.” She also confronts Boy K with the collapse of his Peter Pan mythology: “You were never a boy. You've always been a man.” Many critics note the finale is more of a cliffhanger than a neat wrap, raising big questions and leaving threads dangling for season 2. Reception & Critique Highlights Praise for visuals, ambition, and performances (especially Morrow vs Kirsh dynamic) Criticism: some felt the show “lost sight” of its eerie, dreamlike tone by the end, and that the finale overused convenience (aliens appearing in exactly the right spots) Ratings Season Finale Out of 5, What Happens When a Boy Genius Is Obsessed with an Eyeball Darryl: 2/5 Brian: 4.32/5 Season 1 Out of 10, Aliens Run a Muck and a Rich Guy’s Island Darryl: 5/10 Brian: 7.25/10 Contact Us The Infamous Podcast can be found wherever podcasts are found on the Interwebs, feel free to subscribe and follow along on social media. You can't accuse Erica Stanford of mucking around, can you? NCEA is gone. Marks out of 100 are back, grades from A to E are back, needing to pass 4 subjects at least in order to get the qualification is back. Now, how long have we been talking about the need to do this? About the fact that NCEA is rubbish, that it's been gamed, that it's not respected by employers, that it's not understood by parents? How long have we talked about this? And then within 18 months of Erica Stanford taking over the education portfolio, the changes are made. This is absolutely, by the way, the right thing to do. Nowhere, in none of the assessments of what's happening at NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3, do you hear anyone say - hey, you know what, this is a good system. It's always criticism. The ERA had a look at NCEA Level 1 last year and they found such big problems with that they recommended getting rid of it. NZQA last year found only half of year 12 students actually finished 3 full subjects. They didn't even get to do 3 full subjects, but they somehow managed to pass NCEA. NZCER found that learning was not the focus of school at NCEA level anymore, assessment was. The OECD two years ago found what we always know is going on lately and our ability to read, write and do maths was slipping. It had now fallen below the OECD average. The NZQA Insights paper found a huge number of kids got Level 3 because it's easy, but UE, the old equivalent, they couldn't get it because it's not easy. Now, none of this is news to us, right? Some of these reports actually date back to 2018, 7 years ago. Yet NCEA hasn't been scrapped until now. Now, this is brave, because any change this big is brave, but especially, it's brave right now at a time when secondary school teachers are already dealing with a lot. They have a curriculum refresh on the go. They've got new compulsory exams already now, they've got this. They are busy and they're about to get busier. And while I feel for them, and I do, our kids are too important and their education is too important to muck around. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode of the Mining Minds Podcast, we sit down with Trampus Cook, Regional Director for RAM Enterprise Inc., whose journey through the mining world is as rich and layered as the ore bodies he's helped uncover. A fourth-generation miner and cowboy at heart, Trampus takes us through his early days jacklegging in narrow veins of California gold mines, running heavy equipment under Lake Erie, and eventually stepping into leadership with RAM. From growing up between the ropes of cowboy life and the rails of underground shafts, to being a single father raising four young kids while chasing production, Trampus shares raw and emotional insights that go far beyond muck and machines. He opens up about defining moments in fatherhood, building trust and culture in the mining community, and how being told “you're not alone” by a five-year-old became a driving force in his life. Whether you're a miner, a parent, or someone navigating life's challenges, Trampus's story is a powerful reminder of the strength found in grit, purpose, and personal growth. What If You Picked the Wrong Career—And Can't Fix It?I think about this almost every day. I am sure you do, my friend. What if I picked the wrong career? What if I can't undo it?I'm a professor. I have a PhD—with 15 years of experience. But most days, I still ask: What the hell am I doing here? This isn't what I imagined. I feel typecast. Trapped. Like I can't change direction because the world already decided who I am.I'm an old man.But here's the truth: those boundaries—those roles we think are fixed—they're mostly made up. Nobody really knows what they're doing when they start. You just figure it out as you go.And when I see a 72-year-old training to be a lifeguard after 40 years as a programmer at my swimming pool (true story), I'm reminded: it's never too late to start again. If you're stuck, forgive yourself. I hear people say, “You just didn't do your homework.”F that. No one knows what they're getting into. You figure it out as you go.Say “screw it” to the expectations.Try the thing. Muck around. You don't need permission. Just start. And when people judge you? Build a boundary in your head. Politely Say SCREW YOU. Keep moving. That's what I'm doing. And if you're a PhD who feels this way—know you're not alone. You didn't mess it up. You're just living a story that's still being written. This is for every PhD who quietly wonders: “What if I chose wrong?”If you need someone to hear this, share it!

This may be the 666th episode of The Ledge, but there’s nothing evil about the music played tonight. It’s actually nothing but joyful noise, 38 blasts that prove that rock and roll is as strong as ever. And once again, we traverse the world for quality sounds. Besides the usual lineup of Americans, there’s not one but two fabulous bands from France, along with other European artists. There’s the usual handful of Australians.   There’s also a plethora of veterans still pumping out records you need to hear. Muck and the Mires have been releasing garage rock for over 25 years. The Rabies reunited after 40 years for one of the great surprises of the years. Former Soft Boys guitarist Kimberly Rew returns. Personlity Cult may be much younger, but they consist of members of Ledge favorites Mind Spiders and Paint Fumes (plus many other bands). What’s your favorite new release?  For more info, including setlists, head to http://scotthudson.blogspot.com

Hello to you listening in Mumbai, India!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.Walking the Camino de Santiago was miles and more miles. 500 of them. No matter how many I had walked, there were still more to walk. Uphill, across hot, dry plains, and then the rains in the mountains that turned everything to muck and ankle-twisting rubble. I kept hearing “Just goes to show you, it's always something! If it ain't one thing it's another!” a mantra about life from Gilda Radner's father, for her SNL character Roseanne Roseannadanna. The voice in my head asked: “Well, Diane, what did you expect? You're walking a pilgrimage. Beyond the miles are more miles.”A TIP: I had to learn that the way out is through. Stop thinking that you will enjoy a trouble-free pilgrimage. Dive into the audacity of what you've chosen to do! Let go of trying to get free of the aches and pains, complications, limitations, and disappointments. They are part and parcel of what you said you wanted: to be a pilgrim. These problems are the pilgrimage. Now what? How will you solve them? Don't just start over. Keep starting over. And then look back on what you achieved.  Question: What do you do when faced with “It's always something”?Be well, do good work and keep in touch! You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" Speaking of magic, I hope you'll subscribe, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, bring your friends and rellies, and join us! In this exciting episode of Reading with Your Kids, host Jed Doherty takes listeners on a delightful journey through the magical realm of children's literature, featuring two incredible authors who are reimagining storytelling for young readers. First up is Brett Bean, creator of the innovative hybrid chapter book "Muck and Honey: Tree House Trouble." Bean shares his unique approach to bridging the gap between picture books and traditional chapter books, perfectly designed for children aged 6-9. Drawing inspiration from his own children, Bean crafts a story that celebrates creativity, problem-solving, and the importance of embracing failure as a learning opportunity. The conversation explores the challenges of modern parenting, particularly the overwhelming screen time children experience today. Bean offers insights into encouraging creativity and meaningful interactions with kids, emphasizing the power of simple, engaging activities that spark imagination. Next, the episode welcomes Neil Sharpson, author of the hilarious picture book "Don't Trust Fish." Born from a pandemic-era birthday party, Sharpson's book showcases how quick wit and creativity can transform unexpected moments into delightful storytelling. With influences ranging from Monty Python to The Goon Show, Sharpson brings a unique comedic touch that appeals to both children and parents. Both authors highlight the critical role of children's literature in developing imagination, resilience, and a love of reading. They discuss the importance of creating books that not only entertain but also provide valuable life lessons and spark meaningful conversations between parents and children. Whether you're a parent looking to inspire your child's love of reading, an educator seeking engaging book recommendations, or simply someone who appreciates creative storytelling, this episode offers something for everyone. It's a heartwarming reminder of the magic that happens when creativity, humor, and storytelling come together. I was SO good at sweeping things under the rug! I could take any huge bad things that happened and just make it disappear. Do you know what I mean? Have you ever experienced this? Maybe you have heard this phrase before and don't really know what it's talking about. I am going to explain it right here and give you personal examples from my world. I recently realized that the broom I used the most actually has a title. Here's what I mean. Sweeping things under the rug refers to all the times that we make excuses for someone's bad behavior. We don't hold them accountable for what they have said or done. We push it aside and move on. Some refer to this as forgive and forget. We might try to pretend it never happened. We convince ourselves that this person didn't mean it or was having a bad day or any other excuse we can come up with. Well, my broom that I recently discovered was that All marriages have problems. I could erase any bad behavior with this broom, sweep it right away. Whoosh, under the rug it goes. What broom are you using? I am Renee Swanson, and I help people recover from covert narcissistic abuse. Are you tired of feeling isolated and alone? Are you searching for people who get it? Are you confused, reactive and unsure what to do? Are you running in circles in your mind? Are you worried for your kids and the effect this is having on them?
