This week we're looking at the arch-cult film from 1988, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Its released was botched entirely by the distributor who were almost deliberately defiant in their unwillingness to screen the movie on much more than a few screens. It found its legs on cable and VHS where it was an instant hit and went on to launch a merchandising empire culminating in a video game and one of Universal Studios' most popular attractions at Halloween Horror Nights.When a UFO that looks an awful lot like a circus tent lands in Crescent Cove and aliens that look an awful lot like circus clowns wander into town with murder and mayhem in mind its up to a local cop, his ex-girlfriend, and her manchild boyfriend to stop them in their tracks and save Crescent Cove. Directed by the Chiodo Brothers, who were known for ambitious special effects, stop motion animation, and puppetry with credits under their belt like Elf, Critters, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, it's a send up of 50's alien invasion movies with a plot that's almost one-to-one for the classic 1958 film, The Blob. Anne's Book Club is a new series of interviews with the authors of new fiber art books that I think Long Thread Podcast listeners will love. This episode features new books by Deb Essen, a frequent contributor to Handwoven and Little Looms. Deb Essen may weave plenty of blocks and squares, but you definitely can't put her in a box. Not many weavers would release a book about turning pin-loom squares into adorable stuffed animals just a few months before a book about a drafting method for multishaft weaving, but Deb's curiosity about all things weaving has led her down delightful rabbit holes. (For her book Swatch Critters from the Pin Loom, she wove the whole rabbit!) In our conversation about weaving, writing, and inspiration, Deb talked about why she's excited about both new projects. “They're for people who just like to weave,” she says, “and they're curious about all different kinds of weaving things.” Listen in for a chat and excerpt from the books. From Deb's introduction: Pin looms appeared on the weaving scene in the 1930s as small wooden frames with nails around the perimeter that hold yarn to allow the weaving of small squares. The best-known brand was the “Weaveit” pin loom. Now I have to admit, previous experience with pin looms made out of wood did not make me a fan of pin loom weaving. The wooden looms can be hard to hold comfortably, the weaving needle would catch on the frame edges, and the nails are not always perfectly spaced. But Schacht Spindle Company's Zoom Loom resolved all the issues I had with pin looms. The frame is flat plastic that is easy to hold, the pins are placed precisely and securely anchored, the inside edges of the frame are beveled so the weaving needle does not catch a sharp edge when exiting, and as a bonus, the loom frame has directional notations for winding yarn onto the pin loom. I am in love with these little looms! From Deb's introduction: Welcome to profile drafting—a powerful weaving tool that lets us create one fabric design and translate it into many weave structures! Whether you are a beginning weaver or have been weaving for years, my intent is to open this wonderfully versatile design toolbox for you and explain how to use the tools inside. I consider profile drafts as weaving “shorthand,” where I can quickly see the overall fabric design and then plug in the treading, treadling, and tie-up for the block weave structure I want to use. I've taught prolife drafting for many years, and there are three big questions everyone has that I will answer in this book: Question 1: Why use a profile draft? Question 2: How do profile drafts work? Question 3: How do the squares on a profile draft translate into the threading, the treadling, and especially the tie-ups for different weave structures? This book is a sampler platter of block weave structures using profile drafts. I could literally write an entire book on each weave structure, but my intention is to answer those big questions above for each weave structure and whet your appetite for using profile drafting when designing fabrics. In the "Resources" section at the end of the book, I have listed other books that are dedicated to deeper dives into the different weave structures. All the projects can be woven on 4 or 8 shafts. If you have more shafts available on your loom, you can weave more blocks of pattern in your fabric. Adam found himself miraculously clad in a kilt, so they made their way to a tailor's shop to clothe Guy. When they failed to flatter the proprietor into giving them free clothes, they instead traded their one slice of pizza and empty Tylenol bottle. The troupe continued to fight the goblins. Adam failed to tame the dog-man, Guy noticed the goblins were sensitive to sunlight and set their tarp on fire to destroy their shade, and Tyler, who had run away, realized the others hadn't followed him, so he came back to help finish things off. They then performed the unsavoury task of searching the bodies and found a crude drawing depicting hobbits and a ring, suggesting the hobbits were the targets of more than just the Black Riders. Wet Change, sans Del, set out east towards the town of Bree. They happened upon the violent willow tree, decided not to burn it down just yet, and travelled across a difficult landscape until they came across a group of goblins. Not wanting to fight, Tyler and Adam tried to run away, and Guy climbed a tree, but still they were discovered. Adam and Guy threw Baguettes and branches, but it was only the rising sun that had the strange creatures drawing back into cover. As the goblins scrambled away, a strange dog-like man in their camp broke free. Solomon, meanwhile, noticed the Judge having a private conversation with Damien and returning healed, and so began to record evidence of his companions' tendencies towards heresy. After Bombadil revealed himself to be J.R.R. Tolkien, Goldberry took Del aside for a private conversation, and the rest of Wet Change were left to question the author. He explained that he had often escaped into his own story, into an ethereal realm between fiction and reality, but lately the narrative had been falling apart. The heroes who usually helped the ring-bearer hadn't shown up, so Tolkien had sought out replacements, only to accidentally bring in the self-nominated Best Ensemble, Wet Change. A malevolent tree put everyone except Tyler to sleep and began pulling them into its trunk! As they awoke, Guy set the branches on fire, Tyler injured himself badly getting Del free, and Del sacrificed her cell phone to wedge open the trunk just enough to grab Adam's hand, but the tree wouldn't let him go. So, Adam negotiated and the tree finally released him in exchange for Tyler chopping off its burning limbs. Tom Bombadil reappeared and brought them all to is house, where he revealed himself to be none other than J.R.R. Tolkien. The sketch comedy troupe, Wet Change, was performing at Edinburgh Fringe when suddenly they were engulfed by mist. They emerged from the foggy swirl of leaves onto a forest road.
