A groundbreaking new partnership between the University of Graz, Carbon Kapture and the BioDiMoBot project is showing how nature and technology can work together to tackle two urgent global challenges: climate change and biodiversity loss. Their shared mission, using kelp farming and underwater robotics to monitor and restore aquatic ecosystems, marks a major step forward in how we manage ocean health. At the heart of the project is BioDiMoBot, a mobile robotic platform designed to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem stress in real time. It operates autonomously in lakes, rivers, and coastal waters, collecting long-term data using a mix of physical sensors, novel biohybrid technology, and AI-supported analysis. Unlike traditional methods, BioDiMoBot captures detailed behavioural and environmental signals to reveal subtle changes in ecosystem health before they become critical. Kelp farming and underwater robotics "Understanding biodiversity loss in aquatic systems requires better tools," said Professor Ronald Thenius, Coordinator and Principal Investigator at the University of Graz. "Carbon Kapture is an important stakeholder in the project. They bring critical insight into kelp farming, carbon sequestration and aquaculture - areas where we as developers of sensory systems really benefit from their expertise." Kelp farming plays a central role in the project's vision. Seaweed is not only one of the fastest-growing plants on Earth, it's also a natural carbon sink and biodiversity booster. Carbon Kapture's experience growing kelp for large-scale carbon removal adds a vital applied dimension to the work, bridging research and field deployment. "Nature isn't just something to protect, it's a key part of the solution," said Paul Rees, Chief Revenue Officer at Carbon Kapture. "Kelp farming offers a rare combination of carbon drawdown, biodiversity regeneration and economic opportunity. With BioDiMoBot, we now have the ability to measure those benefits clearly and share that data with scientists, policymakers and the public." The collaboration is especially timely as the EU sharpens its focus on water quality, biodiversity protection, and digital transformation. BioDiMoBot's open data approach and scalable design position it as a valuable tool for both policy compliance and scientific discovery. It's capable of detecting early signs of stress from pollution, warming or habitat degradation, offering a potential early warning system for marine environments. "This is what the future of conservation looks like," added Howard Gunstock, CEO of Carbon Kapture. "By combining data and nature, we're not just trying to reduce damage, we're building systems that help restore balance. This partnership shows what's possible when we stop thinking in silos and start joining forces." The project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe programme and is already gaining attention as a model for cross-sector collaboration. With BioDiMoBot providing the technical foundation, and Carbon Kapture ensuring real-world application, this partnership represents a new chapter in how we measure, manage and protect aquatic ecosystems at scale. Kelp extract can help promote healthy soil biology and crop resilience

A project that aims to use kelp extracts to manage nutrients more efficiently is underway with a partnership of experts funded by Innovate UK. The project, 'Assessing Sugar Kelp Extracts as a Nutrient Management Tool' (or SKE-NMT), is in its early stages and is led by Algapelago Marine Ltd in collaboration with project partners The James Hutton Institute, Atlantic Mariculture Ltd and the UK Agri-Tech Centre. This project responds to the need for more efficient nutrient management in agriculture by adopting a biological approach, valuing the importance of microbial and fungal communities in the breakdown, cycling and retention of nutrients in soil. Through application of seaweed biostimulants under reduced mineral fertiliser application, this project aims to confirm new nutrient management options through stimulating plant responses and promoting healthy soil biology. Kelp extracts to manage nutrients more efficiently Seaweed supplements (due to their uniquely rich profile of fibres, micronutrients and bioactive components) enhance the growth of specific microbiota in soil, which leads to a cascade of biological functions with beneficial impacts for productivity, resistance to abiotic stress and resistance to pathogens. This approach is relevant across a wide range of crop types including broadacre, horticulture and top fruit. As such, use of seaweed biostimulants meet multiple biotic and abiotic challenges to transition to more sustainable and resilient farming systems. This will unlock further research opportunities to explore larger-scale field trials to confirm the ability of kelp biostimulants to improve Nutrient Use Efficiency (NUE). How does it work? Rhizosphere microbiota is a collection of microorganisms that live in the soil and around plant roots and plays an essential role in the degradation of organic matter, nutrient retention and recycling. Previous work has shown seaweed extract application improves microbial diversity and community structure and benefits crop yield and quality. The SKE-NMT project builds on an ongoing Innovate UK project, called 'Optimising Low Energy Extraction of Kelp for Soil and Livestock Nutrition', and is assessing the ability of biostimulants and livestock feed additives, again derived from sugar kelp using a novel low energy extraction method, to influence feed efficiency and improve soil health. The seaweed extracts are novel, firstly because cultivated sugar kelp (a type of brown alga native to UK coastal waters) is a new species in the seaweed extract industry with a unique biochemical profile. Secondly, these extracts are produced using a novel low-energy fermentation and extraction process. Cultivated kelp offers a sustainable and scalable alternative to wild harvested marine biomass. However, the potential of novel cultivated seaweed biomass, particularly in applications like biostimulants, remains underexplored. This project aims to establish an innovative supply chain where cultivated seaweed biomass serves as a cornerstone, significantly contributing to the global transition toward sustainable agricultural practices. The new SKE-NMT project will quantify the ability of these low energy seaweed extracts to improve nutrient use efficiency in stringently designed crop trials. This will explore yield responses under reduced nitrate and phosphate conditions and correlate improved uptake of Nitrogen and Phosphorus under fertiliser limitation with impacts on microbial diversity and community structure. The project will combine the development of new technologies (novel seaweed extracts) with further means to improve nutrient use efficiency in arable and horticultural systems. Wider impacts Conventional nutrient management systems depend on high mineral fertiliser inputs, leading to high input costs and environmental issues. Incorporation of seaweed supplements can improve NUE with significant implications for carbon emissions and soil fertility. This project tests the hypothesis th...

What happens to women's bodies during perimenopause and menopause? In this fun and educational conversation with Functional Nutritionist Nili Grutman, we learn, in depth, about how estrogen and progesterone are produced, as well as the role that these hormones play in a women's body. We also learn what happens when, as women age, the production of these hormones decreases, and the effect that decreased estrogen and progesterone has on our bodies. Estrogen is produced in the follicles of our ovaries. It is responsible for a variety of functions in our body, including (but not limited to): --development of our feminine figure --production of the collagen in our face that keeps us looking young --support of production of serotonin and dopamine in the brain --enabling us to feel safe, secure and happy Progesterone is produced after ovulation. It is also plays a key role in women's bodies, and performs many functions, including (but not limited to): --thickening the uterine lining --regulating our menstrual cycle --helping regulate our sexual libido --controlling our moods Women usually experience perimenopause when the are between 35-37 years old. At that time, the number of follicles in their ovaries significantly decreases, and their menstrual cycle becomes less frequent. Nili advises women to take care of their thyroid health and do a liver detox during this time. Nili strongly suggests that women find a thorough and competent endocrinologist who is able to administer a series of tests to determine their thyroid health. She also advises women to take Kelp as a natural supplement to boost thyroid health. It is very important to detox your liver because the liver is key in flushing out waste, including hormone waste, from your body. If the liver isn't healthy, toxins stay in your body longer, as may potentially cause damage. Nili talks about a variety of supplements that people can take to help detox their liver, including milk thistle, amino acids, and magnesium glycinate. As a side note, Nili also reveals the reason behind weight gain (fat gain) specifically in our midsection. She explains why abdominal weight gain happens during perimenopause. As for menopause, it begins in women between the ages of 45-55. We say that a woman is in menopause one year after her last period. At that time, she is no longer ovulating. In this phase of her life, she may appear cranky and more irritable. She is also more sensitive to stress. She needs to properly care for herself so that she reduces as much stress as possible from her life. She can also take supplements to support her during this time, such as ashwaganda, relora, vitamin D, fish oil, and omega-3 fatty acids. At the very end, Nili speaks about hormone replacement therapy, which might be helpful to many women. Nili believes in using nature as a vital resource for health and wellness. A report from the Oregon Kelp Alliance found that nearly two-thirds of the state’s kelp forests have died out over the last decade. A multitude of factors appear to be behind the decline, including rising ocean temperatures and booming populations of purple sea urchins, which eat the kelp. The report also outlines future research and conservation strategies that could help protect the state’s remaining kelp forests. Sara Hamilton is the scientific coordinator for the Oregon Kelp Alliance and one of the report’s lead authors. She joins us to talk about the status of Oregon’s kelp forests and what it could mean for coastal communities and ecosystems.

Childhood experiences of life on a sailboat in the Bahamas and Caribbean left a profound mark on Kait Rhoads. The experience of growing up on the water has provided great inspiration for her artwork. The artist's Sea Stones series hints at its watery origins. Each sculpture is a small world in itself, an intimate object you can hold in your hand. A talisman, the work looks almost molecular, like plankton carapaces as observed under a microscope. Rhoads states: “My work is inspired by nature and informed by memory. And, three oceans—the Caribbean, the Indian and the Pacific – delineate the imaginative boundaries of my practice. I grew up on the water of the Caribbean in a ship with my family where my deep affinity for biological systems began. I lived surrounded by nature; the liquid light and aquatic life imprinted upon my senses. The sculptures I create emanate from my early experiences within and curiosity about the natural world. While exploring the waters around Bali, I experienced the extraordinary biodiversity and extensive architecture of coral colonies there. This has been a deep influence on my sculptural forms and process of making.” Best-known for her innovative use of Venetian techniques such as murrine and filigrana, she applies these decorative processes to sculptural forms as well as to vessels. She was influenced early on by Lino Tagliapietra's work with cane and Richard Marquis' use of murrine as a structural material. Rhoads' unique process involves weaving pieces of blown and cut glass tubes with copper wire to create flexible looking “soft sculptures.”  States Rhoads: “My method of construction mirrors how my life has formed me, with individual elements woven together to create a strong whole. I consider the individual units, conical hexagonal forms known as hollow murrine, as architectural elements that fit together to create a fluid or floating object. The concept of the work develops slowly, and the production of a complicated piece can take months to years to complete.” Rhoads is also well known for her public art installations including Bloom, commissioned in 2018 for the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art's two-story tall window space. In 2022, Bloom was chosen to be permanently installed inside of the biology department at Highline College, Des Moines, Washington. She also created Salish Nettles, her largest work to date, for the Pacific Seas Aquarium, Tacoma, Washington, and Proto Kelp, which was on view through October of 2024 at Method Gallery, Seattle, Washington. In 2025, the artist will apply for residencies and funding to expand the project sustainably. In all of these public projects Rhoads hopes to inspire in the viewer empathy, curiosity and interest in ocean ecology.  Receiving her BFA in glass from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1993, Rhoads earned her MFA in glass from Alfred University, New York in 2001. She has been an Artist in Residence at the Pratt Fine Arts Center in Seattle, Washington, and the recipient of numerous awards, including the Doug and Dale Anderson Scholarship, The Anne Gould Hauberg Award, and a Fulbright Scholarship for the study of sculpture in Venice, Italy. She has exhibited throughout the United States and abroad. Her work can be found in many collections, including the Seattle Art Museum; the Toyama Institute of Glass in Toyama, Japan; the Glasmuseum in Ebeltoft, Denmark; Shanghai Museum of Glass, China; and The Corning Museum of Glass. She maintains a studio in Seattle, Washington. “The cold, deep green waters of Puget Sound are a more recent source of inspiration in my work.  Since moving to the Northwest over two decades ago, my fascination extended from coral colonies to kelp forests. Seaweed's pliable forms continually inspire me—they stretch up from the depths, undulate in the shallows, and lie on tidal surfaces. Aquatic life infuses my sculptures with animated forms, sparkling surfaces and faceted exoskeletons.” In 2025, Rhoads will continue to work on a community generated art project called Fused Together (2021-2025), for which she is the lead artist. She shepards stained glass windows made by the public that are donated to Tacoma libraries. She will also participate in group shows including Habatat's Glass Coast show at Ringling School of the Arts in Sarasota, Florida, and Women Who Make Glass at the Vashon Center for the Arts, Vashon, Washington, in March 2025.   Of her work Rhoads states: “I desire my work to be emotionally affective—that it evoke for audiences a similar sense of wonder in our blue planet that continues to inspire me. And even, perhaps, to instill a desire to conserve our fragile aquatic ecosystems.”

A conversation with Aaron Huang, founder of OoNee Sustainable Sea Urchin Ranch, to dive into the world of sea urchin ranching and its connections to high-end fish restaurants, many of which fly their sea urchins in from Japan. Over the past decade, a warm water blob off the U.S. West Coast has caused sea urchins to overgraze the kelp forests, leading to a massive population boom of urchins, the collapse of kelp ecosystems, and the rise of countless “zombie” sea urchins—urchins that prevent the kelp from regrowing without dying themselves. Why should we care? Because this phenomenon is happening everywhere—whether it's invasive species or extreme weather events, ecosystems are collapsing, and without smart intervention, they won't recover. In this case, the solution is to harvest the sea urchins threatening the remaining kelp, fatten them up, and sell them to the growing market for high-end seafood. Today we're discussing perhaps the most important 24 armed creature you quite possibly have never heard of before. Each arm has eyes, or more accurately, eyespots on the ends, and they have thousands of tube feet that they closely coordinate to move. It's a keystone species which used to have populations around 6 billion. And in a matter of a couple of years, about 5 billion of those vanished, melting away, literally turning to goo. Or at least that's how SCUBA divers and biologists described it. It almost sounds like an alien science fiction story, but I assure you, it's real.Maybe you've figured out what I'm talking about. And if you listened to my kelp forest interview with Tristin McHugh, we briefly mentioned this creature. It's the Sunflower Sea Star, an amazing creature whose disappearance has caused havoc in marine systems.I traveled 45 minutes from my house to meet with Reuven Bank and Andrew Kim from the inspiring and innovative Sunflower Star Laboratory in Moss Landing, California - right in the middle of the coast of the world famous Monterey Bay.It's a small bustling town full of marine research institutes, fishers, and ecotourism. This episode has two parts rolled into one - it's a sit-down interview, right on the Moss Landing Harbour. And then we go on a mini-field trip - a tour to learn how the Sunflower Star Lab is an important driver in recovering this incredible species. As you'll hear in the recording, we had a lot of…ambiance, from sea lions to raucous gulls patrolling the harbor, and the hums of pumps and water you'd expect in an aquaculture facility.Yes, that's my way of saying this was a bit of a challenging episode to record and edit. But despite a few rough spots, I think it turned out quite well.Reuven is chairman of the board for the Sunflower Star Lab. He's also an interpretive diving ranger for the National Park Service, though his work at the lab is independent from that. And Andrew is the lead aquaculture research technician at Moss Landing Marine Labs, a member of the Sunflower Star Lab board, offering his expertise on aquaculture to the lab. Oh, and we also had a brief discussion with Vincent Christian while he was working in the lab. As you'll here, Vincent is the reason why the lab even exists.Check the Sunflower Star Lab at sunflowerstarlab.org and on Facebook and Instagram.FULL SHOW NOTESLINKSBirch Aquarium at ScrippsPycnopodia Recovery Working GroupRoadmap to Recovery for the Sunflower Sea StarSunflower Star LaboratorySupport Us On Patreon!Buy our Merch!Music: Spellbound by Brian Holtz MusicLicense (CC BY 4.0): https://filmmusic.io/standard-licenseArtist site: https://brianholtzmusic.com Discover the Jumpstart Nature Podcast - entertaining and immersive, it's the nature fix we all need.Check past Nature's Archive episodes for amazing guests like Doug Tallamy, Elaine Ingham, and Rae Wynn-Grant, covering topics from bird migration to fungi to frogs and bats!

Kelp is one of the most sustainable plants in the world. Not only do kelp forests thrive without the use of pesticides and fertilizers, they also support carbon sequestration, promote biodiversity, buffer ocean acidification, and improve water quality. Snacks from the Sea supports these incredible ecosystems by creating nutrient-dense, kelp-based snacks that are harvested sustainably to ensure a vibrant ecosystem while supporting a lifestyle of health and happiness. Inspired by a nourishing dish made by her Korean mother, Snacks from the Sea founder Jennifer wanted to provide people in America with the incredible health benefits of kelp in a convenient, delicious, crunchy snack. Moreso than traditional seaweed, kelp is a nutrient powerhouse that contains healthy vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A and K1, folate, magnesium, iron, and iodine and a powerful antioxidant, fucoidan, which has been shown to have anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and immunoregulatory properties. Snacks from the Sea's signature product, Kelpie Chips, delivers the nourishing power of kelp in a line of all-natural kelp chips available in three delicious flavors: Zesty Pizza, Chipotle, and Salt & Pepper. Apart from supporting vibrant human health, Snacks from the Sea also benefits marine ecosystems. Snacks from the Sea works directly with Korean farmers to harvest kelp from large, sustainable underwater forests. Their kelp farmers are part of an eco-friendly cooperative that was one of the first kelp producers to receive an ASC-MSC seaweed certification. This certification means their operations have demonstrated proven success at minimizing environmental impact, and that employees and the community are being cared for.
