The passing of House Bill 1312 and the new regulations on child care facilities are evidence that Colorado is becoming increasingly hostile to Christians. I know, I know, Pastors who say that are being dramatic. The world has always been hostile to Christians right? Following Christ requires a willingness to bear social cost by being identified with Him. So another way to say it is that our culture in Denver is providing more and more opportunities to bear a cost by being identified with Christ. We aren't meant to hold fast to the truths of scripture alone. So let's take this time to practice holding fast to the truths of scripture together.
Our next sermon series at Redemption Church Denver is ... The Marriage Series. Marriage is holy territory. Like an altar, something glorious happens on it but it's also covered in fire (and dead animals). In order to understand marriage you have to see that marriage is a lot like you. The most important thing about it is how it relates to and glorifies Christ. The big controversy of Romans 7 is whether or not Paul's discussion of his struggle with sin refers to his present state in Christ or prior to his finding Christ. This controversy rages especially when we don't understand the shape of the war against sin we still face in Christ. The sin remains in our flesh, but we have truly received and been renewed by the Spirit of the Lord in Christ. This chapter can be a great source of encouragement as it allows us to more completely understand the present reality of our Christian life at war with sin.
Paul over and over again says we are united with Christ. But what does this unity mean? If we're all united in Christ does that mean we all disappear into Christ? Understanding the dynamics of this union with Christ throws light on so many contemporary questions of identity as well as how we can be assured of our position before the Lord. This week's episode is brought to you by:EASTER VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Hope didn't used to have such a good reputation. Some of the smartest men in history have said hope is for the gullible or the naive and foolish. But for the Christian hope is among the central virtues. In Romans 5:1-21 Paul lays out a case for unshakeable hope amidst all of life's circumstances grounded in the love of God towards us in Christ Jesus. This weeks episode is brought to you by:The Men's Battle Group:A group set on killing lust. In the 4th Century an Egyptian Monk named Evagrius of Pontus gained a reputation as an object of fear among the demons. His friend and fellow monk wrote to Evagrius requesting a treatise concerning "the fight against beings of darkness" so that "we, your friends, might easily cast off from ourselves those evil suggestions of theirs." Evagrius' reply is a taxonomy of spiritual warfare laid out in the simplest of terms. Evagrius demonstrates a thought that a demon would encourage us to believe, and then pairs it with the appropriate response of scripture. Following the pattern of Jesus' combat with Satan in the desert Evagrius takes up the word of God to cut off the thoughts of sin and temptation. In this episode of the Podcast, Aaron and James talk through the effect of the book and the encouragement to take up the word as our chief weapon against sin.Talking Back: A Monastic Handbook for Combating Demons, by Evagrius of Pontus. In this second week of the Romans study Aaron and James discuss the first half of the first chapter in Romans. They address questions like, Who is the gospel for? Is this some new story Paul came up with that doesn't have to do with what Jesus was talking about? and how does the Old Testament connect to the story of Jesus? It's the beginning of the year and resolutions are wearing thin. Well in this episode Aaron and James discuss why you can't beat a habit of reading your Bible and praying to God the often commended typically guilt ridden "quiet time." It's a practice that doesn't get much love these days. Fits more in the spiritual discipline category of days gone by, and not the spiritual formation category. But if you want to hear from God then you must read the Bible. And if you want to talk to God, then you must pray. And if you want to cultivate a deep relationship with God you must listen to him and speak to him. We recommend the quiet time.
In chapter 6 Paul wraps up the household code and then teaches us to put on the armor of God. The power and wonder of the armor of God is necessary to fight the principalities and powers in the heavens and you need it just to live in your house.
