Guerrilla Christianity – “The Baptizing Church” Pastor R. Bret Walker explores Acts 2 and the early church's explosive growth as a baptizing church. Peter's call to “Repent and be baptized… for the forgiveness of your sins” becomes the heart of the message, showing baptism as a means of grace and a sign of God's claim on his people. The sermon urges believers to embrace repentance, proclaim Christ boldly, and invite others into the life of faith. As Bret reminds us, the promise is “for you and for your children and for all who are far off,” and the mission continues today. #GuerrillaChristianity #BaptizingChurch #BookOfActs #RepentAndBeBaptized #HolySpiritPower #EarlyChurchGrowth #MeansOfGrace #PentecostMessage #MakeDisciples #PastorRBretWalker

What is your calling in life? For poet, songwriter, and academic, Malcolm Guite, it's unequivocally clear–to be a storyteller. Today on the podcast Audrey and I chat with Malcolm about the first volume in his new retelling of the classic King Arthur stories, Galahad and the Grail, illustrated by the incredible Stephen Crotts and published by our friends over at Rabbit Room Press. Not only is Malcolm adapting the legends of King Arthur, he's doing it in poetic ballad form, which means they are basically designed to be read aloud. In our conversation, he tells us about the epic journey he and his publisher and illustrator undertook to visit sites connected to the Arthurian legends, how a childhood surrounded by books and stories led him to his lifelong love and study of literature and poetry, and the impact his own mother had on his journey to becoming a poet and storyteller. In this episode, you'll hear: Why Malcolm chose to write this story in ballad form How woodland walks inspire Malcolm's writing and why he knew it was time to “take up the tale”What elements and parallels of Biblical stories Malcolm wanted to restore that have often been left out of modern Arthurian retellingsLearn more about Sarah Mackenzie:Read-Aloud RevivalWaxwing BooksSubscribe to the NewsletterFind the rest of the show notes at: readaloudrevival.com/malcolm-guite

Why do Catholics baptize their babies? Is it even biblical? At first glance, infant baptism can seem unbiblical. But Fr. Mike points to several instances in Scripture that support the practice and reveal God's desire to bring children into His covenant family from the very beginning. Baptizing a child doesn't replace their freedom — it begins their life of faith. As they grow, they will one day choose Jesus for themselves and personally embrace the grace they first received as a gift. For those baptized as adults, baptism becomes a conscious, public declaration of faith. That journey often includes waiting, and that's okay. There's no need to rush. God uses the waiting to prepare your heart, deepen your desire, and make you ready to fully receive what He wants to give you. Something sacred happens in the waiting. It stretches the heart, strengthens faith, and forms trust. Let God do His work there.

Matthew 3:1-6, 13-17; John 3:22-30; 4:1-3 John the Baptist was called by God to initiate a renewal movement within Israel, featuring repentance through baptism in water. Even though he had no sin, Jesus came to John to “fulfill all righteousness.” Jesus also baptized many, acting through his disciples. Luke 3:15-17; John 15:26; Luke 24:49; Acts 1:4-8; 2:1-4, 32-33 John's prophecy about Jesus was that he would baptize people with the holy spirit. Jesus reiterated this promise at the last supper and shortly before his ascension. On the day of Pentecost, Jesus poured out the spirit on those who believed. Acts 2:37-41; 8:12-13, 36-38; 9:18 (22:16); 10:44-48; 16:14-15, 33; 18:8; 19:1-7; 1 Cor 1:13-17 Baptizing new converts in water was standard operating procedure in the early church. Baptism in water went hand in hand with receiving the holy spirit as demonstrated by Peter's instruction on the day of Pentecost to (1) repent, (2) be baptized, and they would (3) receive the spirit. Romans 6:1-4; Colossians 2:12 Baptism is a symbolic ceremony that affords people a physical experience to identify with Christ's death and resurrection. They symbolically experience burial and resurrection. Although baptism is not necessary for salvation, it is a helpful opportunity for the repentant to make a public profession of faith and commitment. Text: Matthew 28:19-20 When an individual has accepted Christ as their Savior, the whole matter of the “Great Commission” is only ¼ complete. Step #1: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations - Salvation Step #2: Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost - Baptism…
A raw journey from fear-based religion and authority wounds to healing, recovery, and identity as a beloved son. Tracy shares hard stories—addiction, grief, and legalism—and how Jesus redefined his name, his marriage, and his mission.• Early farm life shaping fear and attachment wounds• Boarding school legalism fueling secrecy and rebellion• College drift, contempt for authority, objectifying women• Nuclear site safety fight and first glimpses of God's care• Pain meds, porn, and a terrifying wake-up moment• Counseling, Celebrate Recovery, and identity work• Forgiveness letters softening resentment toward family• Marriage grief after child loss and learning to stay• Healing from corporate Adventism toward Christ-centered faith• Baptizing his son into Christ, not a club• Living daily as a treasured son and offering the same hope
Today, we're continuing our series on sharing the gospel, and what we're covering today is about the Great Commission. Have you heard that term before? Christianity's great at using terms the general public isn't familiar with, and sometimes we use terms even we aren't familiar with as believers. A recent study shows that more than 50% of U.S. churchgoers don't know what that term Great Commission means. And when asked if they had heard of the Great Commission, half of U.S. churchgoers say they don't know that term. Maybe our priorities need tweaking.Matthew 28:19 says, “Go and make disciples of all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” And though the Great Commission is not a term used in the Bible, it does describe the command Jesus gave us to share the Good News of His sacrifice for our sins. In this way, He provides a way for people to be reconciled to God, and this is the greatest news anyone will ever hear. Christians should be excited about this action plan.Matthew chapter seven indicates that the path leading to God is narrow, and that many are on the broad path that leads away from God. This truth should motivate us as Christians to fulfill Christ's Great Commission. And the Bible tells us that this activity will have an endpoint. We should have a sense of urgency about that. The Gospel of Jesus Christ was literally born in the Middle East. Jesus' disciples took His words to heart and began preaching and teaching about Him in Israel, then to all the regions around the Mediterranean basin. From there, the Gospel spread quickly into Europe, and beyond.Today, even with all our technology and hundreds of years of sending missionaries to remote parts of the world, not everyone has heard the Good News about Jesus. We have our marching orders. It's time to move. Let's pray.Father, we know that no matter what time is passing. We want all people to come to a saving faith in Your Son Jesus. Remind us daily that we should have a sense of urgency about sharing your good gift with everyone we come into contact with. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Is your spiritual life running on low power mode? In this message, Pastor Jamie Nunnally shares how to plug in and power up by fully immersing yourself in the Spirit. This world will drain you, but the Holy Spirit will sustain you. We need to be baptized in the Holy Spirit.Baptize (baptizō) – to dip, immerse, submerge.3 Baptisms in the Bible:Baptism into the body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13 — At the moment you believe, the Spirit places you into Christ and His body, the Church.Water baptism (baptism in the name of Jesus). Water baptism publicly identifies you with Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. Baptism into Christ changes your spiritual position; water baptism declares your spiritual decision.Baptism in the Holy Spirit. If water baptism is your announcement, Spirit baptism is your empowerment. It's being filled with the Spirit or the Spirit coming upon you. Acts 1 says you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit and receive power to be His witnesses.Four things to know about Baptism in the Holy Spirit:It is separate from salvation and follows salvation. Like drinking water vs. bathing in water—two different experiences with two different purposes. The disciples received the Spirit in John 20, but were baptized in the Spirit in Acts 2. Other examples include the Samaritans in Acts 8, Gentiles in Acts 10, and new believers in Acts 19.The Holy Spirit baptizes us for empowerment. Salvation—the Spirit in you—is a free gift. But the Spirit on you is so you can do something: • Power to live a holy life (Galatians 5:16). • Power to supernaturally minister to others (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). The Spirit within you is for your spiritual identity. The Spirit upon you is for your spiritual assignment. You receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirit by asking for it. Luke 11 says your heavenly Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. This is a good gift from a good Father. You can be baptized in the Holy Spirit again and again. Acts 4 shows the same people from Acts 2 being filled again. Ephesians 5:18 says to be continually filled.Believers are instructed to engage in all three baptisms: the Spirit, the water, and the blood. If you're insecure in your salvation, maybe you don't have all three witnesses in operation.ClosingJesus didn't tell the disciples, "Go try your best." He said, "Don't leave until you're plugged in." Salvation puts you in Christ, water baptism declares your commitment, but baptism in the Holy Spirit connects the cable and fires the engine. You weren't designed to live unplugged, but empowered. Are you plugging in?

As we continue our series, "The Spirit Filled Church," Pastor Bob explores Acts 10, where Peter learns that God's acceptance knows no bounds, emphasizing that the Church should be a welcoming place for all. The discussion centers on overcoming prejudices and embracing the transformative power of the Holy Spirit as we answer God's call to reach out to everyone, regardless of their background.
Introduction to Total Christ & the Five MarksIntroduction: The Mission of Christ and the ChurchRead Acts 2:22-47• What is Peter's argument about who Christ is and where Christ is now?• What is the proper response recorded here to Christ's exaltation? What didthese first disciples specifically do?• What is the role of the Holy Spirit in this passage?• “Five Marks” at CPC means gospel-centered, missional, confessional, sacramental, and communal. Where do you see each of these in this passage?Read Matthew 28:16-20• “All authority” - Christ is King (communal) because of what He has done oncefor all (gospel-centered)• “Make disciples” is the main verb of v. 19 and the main overall mission of thechurch. We are to do that by:• “Going” (v.19) - on the move, no longer constrained to Israel, hence “allnations” (missional)• “Baptizing” (sacramental)• “Teaching” (confessional)• Christ-centered - what Christ commanded, baptized into the name, and in/with Christ's presenceJohn 14:12 - “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the worksthat I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”• Why “because…”? Once Christ goes to the Father, He will send the Spirit, enabling the church to do “greater works” because the presence of God inChrist will be global through the church.Augustine wrote, “The Word was made flesh, and dwelled among us; to thatflesh is joined the church, and there is made total Christ, both head and body.”2 of 4“Five Marks” at CPC also means we hope to experience the FULLNESS ofChrist, not just one emphasis or pendulum swing!1. Gospel-Centered: Trust in the gospel motivates us to be humble because weknow Christ's work to us is purely a gift, but also boldly confident in the faceof shame and sin because it's based in God's power! This grounds us in God'sfinished work on the cross, where he forgave our sins and reconciled us tohimself. Everything we do is motivated from and by the gospel. Think:Humble, honest, authentic, gracious, safe, desire to be truly known and lovedby God and others2. Missional: More (though not less!) than being evangelistic, we strive to bemissional because God promises to dwell with His people in all their Godgiven cultures, languages, and demographics through the church. Thisgrounds us in God's global presence, where the church is the evangelist for awhole new way of life, showing the world who Jesus is and what it means tofollow Him in all our relationships. Think: Culturally self-aware, open &inviting, purposeful, holistic evangelism3. Confessional - Christ as our Prophet: We are not the first ones to considerwhat church should be (thank God!). We humbly submit to God's revelationin the Word as it has been historically interpreted, seeking to be united inbelief across generations and cultures. Officially, we subscribe to thedocuments of Westminster (c.1630) as the summary of our faith. This groundsus in Christ as our Prophet who still speaks. Think: doctrine that is alive andan unwillingness to be distracted by cultural fads4. Sacramental - Christ as our Priest: Christ is "fleshed out" in a carefullydesigned four movement worship service that follows the logic of the gospeland culminates every week in a participation in eucharistic communion withChrist. Jesus is experienced in the body of Christ through different culturalstyles specific to each local community. Think: Friendly, worshipful,mysterious5. Communal - Christ as our King: Christ did not leave us as orphans, butjoined us with Himself to the church, so to be a Christian is to be a part of theredeemed community.
Many Baptists delay baptism for children, but is that really faithful to Scripture and the church's theology? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Samuel Parkison to discuss his provocative case for baptizing believing children. We explore why hesitation often stems from fear of “false professions,” how delaying baptism can unintentionally weaken our view of membership and the sacraments, and what it looks like to encourage genuine childhood piety without lapsing into legalism. Samuel also shares practical wisdom on how pastors and congregations can discern a child's faith, navigate questions of “re-baptism,” and recover a healthier, grace-filled culture of catechesis. Should Christians baptize infants or only believers? This age-old debate divides denominations and families. In this episode of Marked by Grace, Heath Lambert respectfully tackles the arguments against infant baptism from a Baptist perspective. Despite having two Presbyterian mentors who deeply influenced his ministry, Heath examines three key areas: biblical teaching, biblical examples, and biblical covenants. Discover why there's no New Testament command to baptize babies, what household baptisms really teach, and how covenant signs relate to the nature of God's covenants.Timestamps0:00 - Introduction: Arguments against baptizing babies3:07 - Personal story: Two Presbyterian mentors who shaped Heath's ministry5:53 - Why church history can't be our ultimate authority7:12 - Biblical teaching: No New Testament text commands infant baptism8:07 - Colossians 2:11-12 doesn't teach infant baptism10:54 - 1 Peter 3:21 doesn't mention infant baptism12:35 - Romans 6:3-5: Baptism requires faith and understanding14:22 - Biblical examples: Household baptisms and arguments from silence16:24 - Biblical covenants: Signs must match the nature of the covenantKey Points- No Clear Biblical Command: There is no text in the New Testament that explicitly commands or describes the baptism of infants - this is a significant issue when establishing Christian practice.- Church History vs. Scripture: While church historians can be quoted on both sides of the infant baptism debate, Scripture must be our ultimate authority, not historical precedent.- Colossians 2:11-12 Misunderstood: This passage speaks of spiritual circumcision "made without hands" and assumes the baptized person has faith - it cannot refer to infant baptism.- Household Baptisms Are Arguments from Silence: When Acts describes household baptisms, there's no explicit mention of infants. The text indicates those baptized "heard the word" and believed.- Baptism Requires Understanding: Romans 6:3-5 shows baptism as a picture of death, burial, and resurrection with Christ - meaningful only for those who understand and trust in Jesus.- Covenant Signs Match Covenant Nature: Throughout Scripture, covenant signs directly relate to the covenant's nature. New Testament baptism signifies personal faith, not biological or familial membership.- New Covenant, New Requirements: Unlike Old Testament circumcision based on biological descent, New Covenant membership is based on personal faith, requiring different covenant signs.- Respectful Disagreement: It's possible to disagree with infant baptism while maintaining deep respect for those who practice it, including mentors and fellow believers.Scripture ReferencesColossians 2:11-12 - "In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead." - Spiritual circumcision, not infant baptism1 Peter 3:21 - "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." - Baptism as an appeal of faith, not infant cleansingRomans 6:3-5 - "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his." - Baptism requires understanding of Christ's death and resurrectionActs 10:44 - "While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word." - Those baptized in household baptisms were those who heard and believedRomans 2:28-29 - "For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter." - True circumcision is spiritual, not physicalHave a question you'd like answered?
