Introduction to Total Christ & the Five MarksIntroduction: The Mission of Christ and the ChurchRead Acts 2:22-47• What is Peter's argument about who Christ is and where Christ is now?• What is the proper response recorded here to Christ's exaltation? What didthese first disciples specifically do?• What is the role of the Holy Spirit in this passage?• “Five Marks” at CPC means gospel-centered, missional, confessional, sacramental, and communal. Where do you see each of these in this passage?Read Matthew 28:16-20• “All authority” - Christ is King (communal) because of what He has done oncefor all (gospel-centered)• “Make disciples” is the main verb of v. 19 and the main overall mission of thechurch. We are to do that by:• “Going” (v.19) - on the move, no longer constrained to Israel, hence “allnations” (missional)• “Baptizing” (sacramental)• “Teaching” (confessional)• Christ-centered - what Christ commanded, baptized into the name, and in/with Christ's presenceJohn 14:12 - “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the worksthat I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”• Why “because…”? Once Christ goes to the Father, He will send the Spirit, enabling the church to do “greater works” because the presence of God inChrist will be global through the church.Augustine wrote, “The Word was made flesh, and dwelled among us; to thatflesh is joined the church, and there is made total Christ, both head and body.”2 of 4“Five Marks” at CPC also means we hope to experience the FULLNESS ofChrist, not just one emphasis or pendulum swing!1. Gospel-Centered: Trust in the gospel motivates us to be humble because weknow Christ's work to us is purely a gift, but also boldly confident in the faceof shame and sin because it's based in God's power! This grounds us in God'sfinished work on the cross, where he forgave our sins and reconciled us tohimself. Everything we do is motivated from and by the gospel. Think:Humble, honest, authentic, gracious, safe, desire to be truly known and lovedby God and others2. Missional: More (though not less!) than being evangelistic, we strive to bemissional because God promises to dwell with His people in all their Godgiven cultures, languages, and demographics through the church. Thisgrounds us in God's global presence, where the church is the evangelist for awhole new way of life, showing the world who Jesus is and what it means tofollow Him in all our relationships. Think: Culturally self-aware, open &inviting, purposeful, holistic evangelism3. Confessional - Christ as our Prophet: We are not the first ones to considerwhat church should be (thank God!). We humbly submit to God's revelationin the Word as it has been historically interpreted, seeking to be united inbelief across generations and cultures. Officially, we subscribe to thedocuments of Westminster (c.1630) as the summary of our faith. This groundsus in Christ as our Prophet who still speaks. Think: doctrine that is alive andan unwillingness to be distracted by cultural fads4. Sacramental - Christ as our Priest: Christ is "fleshed out" in a carefullydesigned four movement worship service that follows the logic of the gospeland culminates every week in a participation in eucharistic communion withChrist. Jesus is experienced in the body of Christ through different culturalstyles specific to each local community. Think: Friendly, worshipful,mysterious5. Communal - Christ as our King: Christ did not leave us as orphans, butjoined us with Himself to the church, so to be a Christian is to be a part of theredeemed community.
Many Baptists delay baptism for children, but is that really faithful to Scripture and the church's theology? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Samuel Parkison to discuss his provocative case for baptizing believing children. We explore why hesitation often stems from fear of “false professions,” how delaying baptism can unintentionally weaken our view of membership and the sacraments, and what it looks like to encourage genuine childhood piety without lapsing into legalism. Samuel also shares practical wisdom on how pastors and congregations can discern a child's faith, navigate questions of “re-baptism,” and recover a healthier, grace-filled culture of catechesis. Should Christians baptize infants or only believers? This age-old debate divides denominations and families. In this episode of Marked by Grace, Heath Lambert respectfully tackles the arguments against infant baptism from a Baptist perspective. Despite having two Presbyterian mentors who deeply influenced his ministry, Heath examines three key areas: biblical teaching, biblical examples, and biblical covenants. Discover why there's no New Testament command to baptize babies, what household baptisms really teach, and how covenant signs relate to the nature of God's covenants.Timestamps0:00 - Introduction: Arguments against baptizing babies3:07 - Personal story: Two Presbyterian mentors who shaped Heath's ministry5:53 - Why church history can't be our ultimate authority7:12 - Biblical teaching: No New Testament text commands infant baptism8:07 - Colossians 2:11-12 doesn't teach infant baptism10:54 - 1 Peter 3:21 doesn't mention infant baptism12:35 - Romans 6:3-5: Baptism requires faith and understanding14:22 - Biblical examples: Household baptisms and arguments from silence16:24 - Biblical covenants: Signs must match the nature of the covenantKey Points- No Clear Biblical Command: There is no text in the New Testament that explicitly commands or describes the baptism of infants - this is a significant issue when establishing Christian practice.- Church History vs. Scripture: While church historians can be quoted on both sides of the infant baptism debate, Scripture must be our ultimate authority, not historical precedent.- Colossians 2:11-12 Misunderstood: This passage speaks of spiritual circumcision "made without hands" and assumes the baptized person has faith - it cannot refer to infant baptism.- Household Baptisms Are Arguments from Silence: When Acts describes household baptisms, there's no explicit mention of infants. The text indicates those baptized "heard the word" and believed.- Baptism Requires Understanding: Romans 6:3-5 shows baptism as a picture of death, burial, and resurrection with Christ - meaningful only for those who understand and trust in Jesus.- Covenant Signs Match Covenant Nature: Throughout Scripture, covenant signs directly relate to the covenant's nature. New Testament baptism signifies personal faith, not biological or familial membership.- New Covenant, New Requirements: Unlike Old Testament circumcision based on biological descent, New Covenant membership is based on personal faith, requiring different covenant signs.- Respectful Disagreement: It's possible to disagree with infant baptism while maintaining deep respect for those who practice it, including mentors and fellow believers.Scripture ReferencesColossians 2:11-12 - "In him also you were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the powerful working of God, who raised him from the dead." - Spiritual circumcision, not infant baptism1 Peter 3:21 - "Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ." - Baptism as an appeal of faith, not infant cleansingRomans 6:3-5 - "Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his." - Baptism requires understanding of Christ's death and resurrectionActs 10:44 - "While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word." - Those baptized in household baptisms were those who heard and believedRomans 2:28-29 - "For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter." - True circumcision is spiritual, not physicalHave a question you'd like answered? Matt 28:19-20: “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Then, Jesus gives these three commands and a promise. Let's take a look at each one. Command 1: Make Disciples: Command 2: Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit: Command 3: Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you: The Promise: And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age: Acts 1:8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Now, where do we actually do this? Jerusalem (where we are now)Judea and Samaria (neighboring areas) End of the earth (all other places)
This is the last (and the 130th!) sermon in the Gospel of Matthew. We are thankful for this great book and for the Great Commission at its conclusion! The message breaks the commission into four points. Go therefore Make disciples of all nations Baptizing and teaching them I will be with you always You can watch this message here.
When asked if he believed in infant baptism Mark Twain replied, "Believe in it? I've seen it happen!" That story is probably not true, but it is a great line. The follow up question for Mark Twain would have been, "What did you see when you saw an infant get baptized?" and that is what this podcast is about. What part of the story of our faith are we witnessing when we see our children baptized?

Matthew 28:19–20 Therefore go and make DISCIPLES of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. Humans are naturally drawn toward beauty, because we long to know more of ourselves. It was spring two years ago when I recorded an episode on this theme, and as I re-listened this morning, I heard myself say that I had just received a “download” (not a word I would use now) that I had not yet integrated. Not a surprise then, that this morning felt very much the same. The only words that come to me are the few that arrived this morning in a poem; Beloved, then those days arrive when you absorb so much love you are drunk with the wonder of who we truly are Baptizing yourself in a river of grateful tears ~ (art & poetry copyright Christine Pensa) In this episode there is a new introduction, followed by a reprise of episode 168. Re-listening was a great reminder for me and I trust for you there is something to remind you in your own journey. It takes courage to see the wonder of who we truly are. How it is that we can surrender into the beauty beyond the beauty we thought we knew? The first question that arises within our human self is how to move this through your body and into your life in a way that integrates into your everyday existence. It takes courage to see the wonder of ourselves because it means that so much of who we thought we were, including the “good” parts of ourselves, needs to go. The blinders need to come off or we cannot hope to see our own brilliance. The invitation is to notice where the resistance in you is — turning to meet that part and then going beyond what you thought was the best of you. Sacred self care is opening to find more of ourselves. We're not fixing, because in this moment we are becoming the creator self by leaving behind the limiting beliefs and practices and images we have held onto. We are in the process of freeing ourselves. We are stepping into more of our true brilliance, partnering with the Earth, and then with others. We are the song that is being sung. We are the flowers that continue to bloom and we cannot be stopped. Our bodies already recognize and respond to the beauty beyond the beauty we thought we knew. Why was Jesus baptized for repentance by John the Baptist? (Yes, Jesus is willing to participate with us in our repentance. But there is something deeper.) Jesus is not so much being baptized by the waters, as he is baptizing the waters. Jesus is sacramentally consecrating the waters so they become mighty waters—the mighty waters of salvation.

Today, we're continuing our series on sharing the gospel, and what we're covering today is about the Great Commission. Have you heard that term before? Christianity's great at using terms the general public isn't familiar with, and sometimes we use terms even we aren't familiar with as believers. A recent study shows that more than 50% of U.S. churchgoers don't know what that term Great Commission means. And when asked if they had heard of the Great Commission, half of U.S. churchgoers say they don't know that term. Maybe our priorities need tweaking.Matthew 28:19 says, “Go and make disciples of all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” And though the Great Commission is not a term used in the Bible, it does describe the command Jesus gave us to share the Good News of His sacrifice for our sins. In this way, He provides a way for people to be reconciled to God, and this is the greatest news anyone will ever hear. Christians should be excited about this action plan.Matthew chapter seven indicates that the path leading to God is narrow, and that many are on the broad path that leads away from God. This truth should motivate us as Christians to fulfill Christ's Great Commission. And the Bible tells us that this activity will have an endpoint. We should have a sense of urgency about that. The Gospel of Jesus Christ was literally born in the Middle East. Jesus' disciples took His words to heart and began preaching and teaching about Him in Israel, then to all the regions around the Mediterranean basin. From there, the Gospel spread quickly into Europe, and beyond.Today, even with all our technology and hundreds of years of sending missionaries to remote parts of the world, not everyone has heard the Good News about Jesus. We have our marching orders. It's time to move. Let's pray.Father, we know that no matter what time is passing. We want all people to come to a saving faith in Your Son Jesus. Remind us daily that we should have a sense of urgency about sharing your good gift with everyone we come into contact with. In Jesus' name, amen.Change your shirt, and you can change the world! “Baptism is the sacrament of faith.” The Catechism explains to us who can baptize as well as why we need Baptism for eternal life. The Catechism makes clear to us that evangelization and the sacraments go hand in hand. An ancient saying is highlighted, linking the two: lex orandi, lex credendi—or, the law of prayer is the law of faith. Fr. Mike illustrates this connection by showing us that, when you change the sign that points to an invisible reality, you risk changing where it's pointing. This is why “no sacramental rite may be modified or manipulated at the will of the minister or the community.” Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 1122-1126.
