Is busyness subtly drowning out your ability to love God and love others? When we're constantly rushing from one task to the next, we lose the time and mental space to notice the needs of those around us, let alone build meaningful relationships with them. Our hurried lifestyles often turn our homes into mere refuges from the chaos instead of places of true connection and community. Today's guest, Dave Runyon, author of The Art of Neighboring (https://www.amazon.com/Art-Neighboring-Building-Genuine-Relationships/dp/080101459X), shares how simple acts of loving and connecting with our neighbors can create a profound social safety net – stronger than governmental programs – and foster a deeper sense of community. What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus? (Answers – Raise your Hand) A FOLLOWER OF JESUS/Disciple is: One who is following Jesus. Then he said to the crowd, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily, and follow me. Luke 9:23 (NLT)   One who is being changed by Jesus. Don't copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect his will really is. Romans 12:2 (NLT)   One who is committed to the mission of Jesus. “Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth. [19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. [20] Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:18-20 (NLT) https://youtu.be/Ymfh6RJezQ4   Why are we supposed to share the gospel? Because we are committed to the mission of Jesus.   Matthew 28:19 – 20 (NLT) 19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. 20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”   Romans 10:15 (NLT) 15 And how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is why the Scriptures say, “How beautiful are the feet of messengers who bring good news!” CHURCH PULSE WEEKLY (podcast) on Evangelism Data from Reviving Evangelism, noting the sobering finding that nearly half of Christian Millennial respondents in 2019 (47%) believed that sharing their faith with a non-Christian was WRONG. However, 94 percent of these same Millennials also said that the best thing that could ever happen as a result of a spiritual conversation would be that the non-believer would come to know JESUS. “When it comes to embracing the new dynamic of evangelism, the most important shift is the shift from proclamation (telling or yelling) alone to conversation,” notes Mark Springer. “There are so many different avenues that this wisdom is illuminated through. One is through the life and ministry of Jesus. [In the gospels,] he asked 307 questions, he was asked 183 questions and he only directly answered eight questions. He created space for conversations in his interactions.” “Create space for conversation about your evangelism strategies in your churches. Train your people to be like Jesus, to be 40 times more likely to listen during an interaction with someone than to drive home a proclamation (telling). Create cultures of listening both in and around your churches and in your congregations.” Share about the first time sharing my faith on the 16th Street Mall   How can we share the gospel? – Personally and Conversationally   ASK: Get to know people. Listen to them and learn their story. Ask questions about their background and spirituality. ADMIRE: As a person shares their faith background, point out things about their religion you admire (i.e., dedication, missions).  ADMIT: Emphasize that as a follower of Jesus, you are a messed-up human who needs a relationship with Jesus. Transition into your life change story and then the story of the Gospel.    God – created us to be with him. (Genesis 1-2) Our – sins separate us from God. (Genesis 3) Sins – cannot be removed by good deeds. (Genesis 4 - Malachi 4) (Bad News) Paying – the price for our sin, Jesus died and rose again. (Matthew - Luke) (Good News) Everyone – who trusts in Him alone has eternal life. (John) Life – with Jesus starts now and lasts forever. The familiar words of Jesus to "love your neighbor as yourself" seem so simple, but the pace of modern life—and parenting—makes it difficult for us to love our neighbors well and model this for our children. In this conversation, Dave Runyon speaks from the heart on the importance of being good neighbors and how this impacts our kids. What benefits (and challenges) arise when families endeavor to be good neighbors? Why would families choose to prioritize being present in their neighborhoods? What are practical ways that families can move together toward becoming better neighbors? With years of experience as a high school teacher, pastor, and father of four, Runyon provides insights from the book he co-authored The Art of Neighboring. In this episode, Graham interviews author and dad of 4, Dave Runyon, co-author (with Jay Pathak) of The Art of Neighboring, a fantastic book that encourages the church to be the church -- and get outside our four walls to engage those who live closest to us. This book reminds us that good neighboring is right at the heart of Jesus' commandments to love the LORD our God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves. It may not be easy, but as Christ-followers, this is what we're called to. And it is so worth it and such a blessing. You'll be encouraged and challenged by Dave as we walk through this incredibly important topic of being the kind of neighbors God has called us to be. What a great way to be a strategic family! Dave also gives us a peak into the intentionality in the Runyon home -- with great ideas to engage and listen to your kids.

REFLECTION QUOTES “Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one” ~Bruce Lee (1940-1973), actor, director and martial artist “I think the reason we sometimes have the false sense that God is so far away is because that is where we have put him. We have kept him at a distance, and then when we are in need and call on him in prayer, we wonder where he is. He is exactly where we left him.” ~Ravi Zacharias (1946-2020), author and Christian apologist “In prayer it is better to have a heart without words than words without a heart.” ~John Bunyan (1628-1688), preacher and author of Pilgrim's Progress “Peace in the Bible is not a negative, the absence of hostilities, but rather a positive that includes everything necessary for human flourishing. It is a holistic word. Peace comes when our physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual needs are met.” ~Glenn Sunshine, history professor and author Christ's love towards us, and not our love towards Christ, is the true ground of expectation, and true foundation of hope. ~J.C. Ryle (1816-1900), Anglican bishop “Do not look to your hope, but to Christ, the source of your hope.” ~C.H. Spurgeon (1834-1892), famed London preacher “Christian hope rests upon the fact not that evil can be ignored, or that it will simply fade away, but that it has been judged at the cross.” ~David F. Wells, theologian, professor and author “[K]now, at the end of the day, following Jesus is not necessarily designed to be safe. Safety is a natural desire but it can keep us from being like Jesus in the midst of an unsafe world.” ~The Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon “…the church is not a human society of people united by their natural affinities but the Body of Christ, in which all members, however different, (and He rejoices in their differences and by no means wishes to iron them out) must share the common life, complementing and helping one another precisely by their differences.” ~C. S. Lewis (1898-1963), writer and Oxford professor SERMON PASSAGE James 5:13-20 (ESV) 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. 16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working. 17 Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed fervently that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain on the earth. 18 Then he prayed again, and heaven gave rain, and the earth bore its fruit. 19 My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, 20 let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

We start doing so simply by learning our neighbor's names and then asking God what is next. The biggest thing we need to become a good neighbor is the willingness to have awkward conversations.

In this episode we talk with Karen Wilk who is the pastor of NEW (Neighbourhood Engagement Workers') Community, a missional community in her neighborhood in Edmonton, Alberta. She shares with us about her transition from pastoring a large, traditional church to engaging a new paradigm of 'go and be' in the neighborhood. This has led to her work in developing practices and postures that encourage and equip churches to resource their members to develop intentional neighborhood networks within their home communities. In particular she shares about the Abundant Community Initiative she has helped develop and lead in Edmonton. Based on The Abundant Community by Peter Block and John McKnight, the model raises up 'block connectors' who serve in three roles in the local neighborhood. These roles include being a point person, a party person, and a listener. Within these roles, block connectors work to connect neighbors with one another and rally together when neighbors have needs to support, as well as plan times of celebration and socialization for the neighborhood, and seek to listen to the conversations happening within the broader city and the opportunities that exist for neighbors to play active roles in the community.Karen wears several hats in her work as a cultivator of missional communities. As a leader of workshops to guide churches in resourcing their members to adopt missional mindsets in their neighborhoods, she is a National Team Member for Forge Missional Training Network and a Go Local Catalyser with Resonate Global Mission of the Christian Reformed Church in North America. Mike Delamont tells Donna and Kevann about "The Art of Neighboring" by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon, a book he found both convicting and helpful. As a "raging extrovert," Mike didn’t think this book would have a lot to teach him about how to be a good neighbour. He quickly realized that the art of neighbouring means moving your life out of the backyard and into the front yard where you can actually see who lives around you and becoming intentional about being interruptible. http://media.blubrry.com/faithstrongtoday/p/fst.mc.tritondigital.com/GROW_ON_THE_GO_P/media/GOTG-S03E46_aug13-19.mp3

We are all scared of evangelism. Few people seem to enjoy sharing their faith, even though Jesus tells us it's a priority for his disciples to do so. So how can we overcome our fear? What does it look like to share our faith? How can we avoid the cliches and manipulation that the word sometimes brings with it? In this sermon, Fr. Stephen shares how faith-sharing really boils down to being a good neighbour and loving as Jesus does. The specifics of our faith can start shining through only when we have shown genuine love for those we live with and next to.Scripture reference: Luke 10:1-20Preached by Rev. Stephen Silverthorne on the 4th Sunday after Pentecost, July 7, 2019Sermon HighlightsSharing faith scares usJesus expects us to do itWe share faith effectively when we live out our faithWe show who Jesus is by loving our neighboursThis practical love is the only thing which will break through people's cynicismGod does the real work in preparing the harvestWe are not responsible for bringing people to JesusWe are only responsible for loving them like Jesus doesWe will fail to connect with some peopleWe can't let it bother usHandling rejection is easier when you know God loves youFurther ReadingThe Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak & Dave Runyon. Kaytee has a special guest co-host joining her this week, and I can’t wait to share her with you. You’ve heard me mention “my Heather” many times on the podcast, and today she’s recording with me to bring you a very special episode. Continuing Important announcement: we have a great discount code to share with you from The Bookshelf Thomasville! Now through June 30th, you can get anything on their website for 10% off using the code CURRENTLYREADING (wow!!!) This would be a great time to pick up a Shelf Subscription for yourself or others! You’ll hear a “bookish moment of the week” from each of us: a trip to a favorite indie bookstore and library cards for very excited kiddos. Next, we discuss our current reads for the week. Heather prepared like a boss and brings you a perfect audiobook listen no matter who you are road tripping with this summer. Kaytee has some non-fiction and a (perhaps overly?) hyped sequel to discuss. For our deep dive this week, I’m talking to Heather about her reading life, including some of the things that you listeners have been wondering about our (M&K’s reading life) in relation to motherhood, and finding time to read with kids around. As always, we finish up with A Book (yep, capitalized) that we’d like to press into every reader’s hands. We’ve got a children’s classic that should be read by readers of every age and a memoir that will make you cry and laugh so hard you may pee yourself.
