Hello and welcome to episode 75. This time, we discuss one of Conan Doyle's most important and influential early stories, ‘J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement', which appeared in the Cornhill in January 1884. You can read the story here. The show notes will be available at https://bit.ly/DOD75sn (for all show notes, just replace ‘75' with the episode number in question). The episode will shortly be posted to our YouTube channel: www.youtube.com/@doingsofdoyle. Please like and subscribe. Synopsis There have been many theories forwarded regarding the fate of the brig Marie Celeste, found drifting derelict in December 1873. But one man, Dr. J. Habakuk Jephson, knows the truth because he is the only known surviving passenger. Following service with the Union forces in the American Civil War during which he was badly wounded, Jephson settled down to regular medical practice in Brooklyn. But years of overwork, weak lungs, and the lingering effects of his war wound leave his own doctor to suggest recuperation via a long sea voyage. Unfortunately, the chosen vessel is Marie Celeste, whose passenger list is expanded by the last minute addition of the apparently wealthy Septimius Goring, a man of mysterious and sinister aspect and antecedents. At first, all goes well, until the captain's wife and child are tragically lost overboard mid-Atlantic, following which the ship appears to be cursed…    Warning The story contains racist language and depictions, which we discuss. If this is likely to offend, you may want to skip this episode. Next time on Doings of Doyle… We return to Sherlock Holmes with the stage play ‘The Crown Diamond' and its short-story alter-ego ‘The Adventure of the Mazarin Stone'.

Let's be serious, this is the starting point of your year. Our lives won't move in the direction God wants unless we align it with God's will. And to start, we need to stay committed in renewing our mind; guarding our minds the same way we clock in for work or study for an exam, if you're a student. In March, we are going to explore the mind and most importantly, the mind from a biblical perspective, how to renew it, its role in our relationships and livelihood. How we can have the most healthy mind so we can live a more healthy, peaceful and fulfilling life. Protecting our focus and being aware of our appointed time is also pertaining to how we take care of our mental health. So stay tuned for the next couple of weeks as we dig in and learn from this theme. I thank God in advance for the fruit that will come from our exploration with the help of His Spirit. Our Vision as a church is to echo the prophet Habakuk and "see the fame and deeds of God renewed and known in our time." To this end, our mission is to see lost New Yorkers, far from God, be transformed into compelling missional disciples. We believe this happens in three shifts: we want to see people go from Gospel resistance to experiencing the tangible presence of God, from a selfish orientation to pursuing counter formation in the way of Jesus, and from worldly ambition to living on sacrificial mission with the Holy Spirit. Rather than holding an emphasis in one of these areas, we believe that it is the intersection of these three things that creates a compelling disciple of Jesus. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Tuesday morning, the 6th of January, 2026, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in Romans 1:17:“The just (or righteous) shall live by faith.” Then we go to the Book of Habakuk 2:4:”But the just shall live by his faith.” Then we go to Galatians 3:11, says the same thing. I think the Lord is trying to tell us something today. Now, as we start the new year, I want to encourage you to ask the Lord to give you a scripture that you can hang onto for the whole year. The Lord has given me this very scripture for this year. Yes, and the righteous shall live by faith. You see, my dear friends, we cannot live without it. In fact, we cannot exist without faith in God, not faith in faith but faith in God. So as we start the new year, we're into our sixth day, I want to encourage you to discipline yourself and start to live by faith and not by chance or by hoping for the best.Us farmers have a saying. In the Afrikaans language, it is, ”Die Boer maak 'n plan.' (The farmer makes a plan). Well, I tried for many, many years to make my own plans when I was farming and they never worked. When I started to trust in the Lord, then my plans began to fall into place, but I can hear one young farmer asking me a question, ”How do you get that faith?” The answer is found in the Book of Romans 10:17: ”So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” So if you want more faith, you need to spend more time reading your Bible and that will encourage you to walk by faith.I want to tell you a little story. In 1993, I came back from Scotland. I had been preaching over there and on my way back I felt the Lord tell me, by faith, to write my story. Now I have a limited education. I had never had any experience in writing before, and we wrote a little book called ”Faith like potatoes.” Folks, that book is now in 17 languages. A movie has been made of that book, which is still being shown all over the world. It is a miracle. It is not possible for me to do something like that, but by faith, I stepped out the boat and I trusted the Lord. This year together, let us start to walk by faith and expect great things from the Lord. Jesus bless you and have a wonderful day.Goodbye.

Tesnou bránou - biblické zamyslenia na každý deň

Malachiáš 2,10-16 10 Či nemáme všetci jedného otca? Či nás nestvoril jeden Boh? Prečo sme si navzájom vierolomní a znesväcujeme zmluvu svojich otcov? 15 Či on nevytvoril jednotu a nedal zo svojho Ducha? Výstraha a povzbudenie.

Nahum and Habakuk help us understand that even if judgment on God's enemies seems delayed, in the plans and purposes of God, it is always at the right time. Nahum prophecies about the coming destruction of the nation of Assyria. Nahum reveals that God's authority is over all nations. Sin provokes his justice, and he brings judgment for his glory, and the good of his people. Habakuk demonstrates the response of the righteous as they live in the midst of sinful people and await God's judgment. The righteous live by faith.

Today as it stands, there are 3.4 billion people who exist that have no access to the gospel. They likely do not know a single believer in their neighborhood. People who will be born, they will live and they will die, likely without ever hearing the gospel. This, as a church, should compel us to action and radical obedience as God's people.Jesus consistently lived in this rhythm where he was oftentimes in the secret place, spending time with the father, but then he was always leaving that place for the harvest. There were always more places where the kingdom of God had to be proclaimed. And so now that you spent time with Jesus, now that you've had your time in the secret place, are you ready for the mission? In this sermon you'll learn how God's heart is burdened for unreached people groups all around the world, our role to play in missions, and how we will be worshipping one day with people of all nations, all tribes, all tongues, singing Holy Holy Holy is the Lord God all mighty. For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.Habakuk 2:14We'd love for you to subscribe to our channel and turn on notifications to get updates on our latest content and resources that will help more people know Jesus and people know Jesus more.GIVE : We believe that generosity is golden. Prayer and TrinityPrayer is communication between God and youUse of the word in prayer – Lectio Divina (show notes) – Praying through a passage and asking God for directionLord's Prayer as a template for prayer (show notes)Silence and solitudeSilence - ceasing inner thoughts and emotional responses to be still before God (Ps 46:10; 62:5; Habakuk 2:20).  We quiet ourselves to be able to hear the Lord speak even if he chooses his “still, small voice” - 1 Kings 19:12 (Hebrew - a sound silent, soft, light, gentle).  Silencing the inner voice and emotion that we feel prepares us to be fully concentrated on God.   Solitude - to be fully present to God and not paying attention to anyone or anything else. We might be alone or in a group. Solitude is more a state of mind and heart than it is a place (Foster, Celebration of Discipline).Trinity – a Three-In-One God: Father, Son, Holy Spirit. Scripture affirms that the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit are all GodThey mystery of Who God is can be seen in Jesus as separate from the Father Earthly ministryHis sacrifice for our sins  Ps 22 and in the passage on the Man of Sorrows of Is 53.  Resurrection2nd ComingThe Holy Spirit as separate from the Father and the SonActs 2:38 – because our sins are forgiven, the Holy Spirit lives in us Transformation passages are all Holy Spirit relatedOur fellowship with God is because the Holy Spirit lives in usClick here for more information on Prayer
