Khalid Sabree was born in Harlem and grew up in the projects. His parents came from the south and discovered Islam in New York City during the days of Malcolm X. His artistic influences include Prince, A Tribe Called Quest, Basquiat, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden. In this interview, Khalid shares his personal story; how his family and community provided a haven from the Hell Up in Harlem. How he grew as an artist to learn that Islam in his artwork is represented not by drawing Arabic calligraphy, but by reflecting the oneness of life.
