Liz and Ben delve deep into the archives and come back with some highlights from the collected Discworld Diaries from Terry Pratchett and Stephen Briggs' The Ankh-Morpork Archives Volumes I (2019) and II (2020), plus Terry's 2004 collaboration with Bernard Pearson, The Discworld Alamak. Between 1998 and 2003, Discworld fans got an extra little treat: an in-universe diary themed around one of the Guilds or other major institutions of the Disc, full of new Discworld history and gags penned by Pratchett with the assistance of Stephen Briggs, and illustrations by Paul Kidby. In 2004, they got something a little different: a Roundworld version of the Celebrated Discworld Almanak, a publication famed for its wisdom, length and absorbency, co-authored by Pratchett and Bernard Pearson. After a brief break, two more diaries with new gags and Discworld lore appeared in 2007 and 2008, but any subsequent diaries or journals were just compilations of quotes and existing material. Like all diaries, these were smaller print runs and never reprinted, so for most fans these extra tidbits were lost to time. But then, in 2019 and 2020, Stephen Briggs and Paul Kidby brought all that weirdness back in two new books: The Ankh-Morpork Archives Volume I, and Volume II, each collecting the original content from four of those diaries and presenting them in a coffee-table style larger format, with new layout, updated or new art, and all the charm of the originals. Did you ever have one of the diaries? Did you write in it? What do you think of the new presentation of all these gags? Do the more unusual diaries have the same charm, or does it feel a bit like the best themes had already been used? And if you were to see new books based on any of this stuff, what would you want to see? Note your answer in your diary, then send it to us using the hashtag #Pratchat84. You can find episode notes and errata on our web site. Next month we knock off one of our few remaining Discworld novels: Sam Vimes' detective's holiday in the country, Snuff! Nicole O'Byrne speaks with Colin Campbell and Robert Raizenne about their book, A History of Canadian Income Tax Volume II, 1948-71. This book offers an in-depth analysis of the creation and enforcement of the 1948 Income Tax Act and its subsequent amendments. It details the policy discussions among senior officials and finance ministers on various tax system matters, drawing extensively from parliamentary debates, government documents, and resources from the Canadian Tax Foundation. Colin Campbell began his career as a political science professor at Mount Allison University before earning his law degree at Western. He practiced as a tax partner at Davies Ward Phillips & Vineberg LLP, specializing in tax planning and representing clients in court. Colin taught at Western Law from 1999 to 2009 as an adjunct, then joined full-time in 2011 as an associate professor. He has written extensively on tax and serves as chair of the Canada Revenue Agency's Offshore Compliance Advisory Committee. Robert Raizenne has extensive experience in tax planning, including cross-border and domestic M&A, corporate reorganizations, international tax, and trusts. He is also an experienced tax litigator. Robert is an adjunct professor of tax law at McGill and the University of Toronto, and a frequent speaker and writer at major tax conferences, including those hosted by the Canadian Tax Foundation and the International Fiscal Association. Our recording of #Pratchat83 was delayed at the last minute, so our discussion of The Ankh-Morpork Archives and The Discworld Almanak will have to wait until later in the month - hopefully around the 25th February. But subscriber Molokov suggested it might be fun to discuss some of the other, less book-like Discworld merchandise available, so in this shorter bonus episode, Ben does just that! We'd love to hear about your favourite merch, official or fan-made! Drop us a line and/or a photograph using the hashtag #PratchatMerch on social media, via email, or chat to us via our subscriber Discord. The merch Ben mentions this episode from the Discworld Emporium includes the Ankh-Morpork Doodle Map, Terry Pratchett's Hat silver pin badge; Death's Omega cloak pin; the Band with Rocks In tour T-shirt; the plushie Greebo and rat-onna-stick; beermats of pubs and brands; and the dried frog pills box. It's not as easy to link to individual items at Discworld.com, but things Ben mentioned from there include various pins and badges; rare collectible pins; shopper bags; acrylic beanies; and the Great A'Tuin golf umbrella. The Anoia tea towel Ben liked was also from the Emporium, not Discworld.com, though they have tea towels too. He forgot to mention Discworld.com's notebooks - the Unseen University and Assassin's Guild ones are especially good. And their T-shirts aren't as “subtle” as he remembered, though their socks are certainly a bit less subtle than the Emporium's. The episode title is a reference to a specific scene in Mel Brooks' 1987 Star Wars parody Spaceballs. We'll be back in late February with #Pratchat83, discussing The Ankh-Morpork Archives Volume I and Volume II, and The Discworld Almanak. If you're very quick you could still get a question in about those! In March we're commemorating the tenth anniversary of Terry's death by discussing his thoughts on dying from “Shaking Hands with Death”, the Richard Dimbleby lecture he gave (with help from Tony Robinson) in 2010. It's most readily available in A Slip of the Keyboard, but you can also watch the original speech on YouTube. It gets pretty heavy, but we'll approach this discussion with empathy and kindness. Get your questions for that one in using the hashtag #Pratchat84.

Bill Gates's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein has drawn significant criticism and cast a shadow over his reputation as a philanthropic leader and tech visionary. Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft, met with Epstein several times beginning in 2011, after Epstein had already been convicted of soliciting minors in Florida. These meetings, reportedly to discuss philanthropy, raise troubling questions about Gates's judgment and his willingness to engage with a known sex offender. Gates admitted to dining at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse and attending gatherings where other influential figures were present, but his explanations of their interactions have done little to dispel skepticism. Critics argue that Gates's association with Epstein reflects a disturbing willingness to overlook Epstein's criminal past in pursuit of personal or professional gains. The revelations about Gates's connection to Epstein also underscore deeper issues of accountability among powerful men in elite circles. Gates's public persona as a tech mogul turned global humanitarian stands in sharp contrast to his willingness to engage with someone as controversial as Epstein. This hypocrisy has led to calls for greater transparency about the true nature of their relationship and the motivations behind their meetings. Gates has sought to downplay the significance of his ties to Epstein, characterizing them as a mistake, but his actions have fueled public distrust and damaged his carefully cultivated image as a moral and intellectual leader. Prince Andrew's settlement with Virginia Roberts Giuffre, announced in February 2022, marked a significant moment in the fallout from Jeffrey Epstein's sex trafficking scandal. Giuffre, who accused Andrew of sexually abusing her when she was a teenager, had filed a civil lawsuit in the United States. Despite years of public denials, including a disastrous BBC interview in which Andrew claimed to have no memory of meeting Giuffre, the prince agreed to an out-of-court settlement reportedly worth several million dollars. This agreement avoided a public trial, sparking widespread criticism that Andrew used his wealth and privilege to sidestep accountability. The settlement, though not an admission of guilt, reinforced perceptions that Andrew prioritized damage control over confronting the allegations directly.Critics argue that Andrew's decision to settle further tarnished his reputation and that of the British royal family. The settlement came with no public acknowledgment of wrongdoing, leaving lingering questions about the prince's involvement with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell's network. The financial payout also fueled resentment, with many pointing out that Andrew, stripped of his royal duties and titles, appeared desperate to preserve what remained of his public standing. By avoiding a trial, Andrew missed an opportunity to clear his name through transparent legal proceedings, deepening public skepticism. The entire affair underscores the broader issue of how the powerful often evade genuine accountability, leaving victims and the public dissatisfied with a system that appears skewed in favor of the elite.

Bill Clinton's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein has been a source of considerable controversy and scrutiny, particularly in light of Epstein's criminal activities involving sex trafficking and exploitation. Clinton, who served as the 42nd President of the United States, flew on Epstein's private jet, infamously dubbed the "Lolita Express," multiple times in the early 2000s. Flight logs and other records show that Clinton traveled to Epstein's private island and properties, raising questions about the depth of their association. While Clinton has denied knowing about Epstein's illicit activities, his repeated presence in Epstein's circle casts doubt on his claims of ignorance, particularly as reports surfaced of high-profile guests and inappropriate behavior at Epstein's gatherings. Clinton's denials, though politically strategic, leave a credibility gap that undermines public trust and tarnishes his legacy. The former president's relationship with Epstein also highlights broader concerns about the lack of accountability among powerful individuals. Despite Clinton's post-presidential efforts to rehabilitate his public image through philanthropic work, his association with Epstein remains a glaring contradiction. Critics argue that this relationship exemplifies how the wealthy and influential often operate in insular worlds, shielded from meaningful scrutiny until their actions become too egregious to ignore. Clinton's unwillingness to fully explain his ties to Epstein has only fueled speculation about what he may have known or overlooked. Prince Andrew's relationship with Jeffrey Epstein has been widely condemned and has irreparably damaged his reputation as a member of the British royal family. The Duke of York maintained a close friendship with Epstein for years, even after Epstein's 2008 conviction for soliciting a minor. Andrew's visits to Epstein's properties, including staying at his Manhattan townhouse, were well-documented, and his public appearances with Epstein raised serious concerns about his judgment and moral compass. The scandal escalated further when Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's victims, accused Andrew of sexual abuse, claiming she was trafficked to him as a minor. Andrew's denials, including the widely ridiculed 2019 BBC interview, only deepened the public's skepticism and highlighted his apparent lack of accountability or remorse. The fallout from Prince Andrew's ties to Epstein has not only sullied his own name but also tarnished the royal family's reputation. His refusal to cooperate fully with U.S. authorities investigating Epstein's network has fueled accusations that he is avoiding justice by hiding behind his royal status. Andrew's eventual removal from official royal duties and public life was a necessary, albeit belated, step to contain the damage, but it did little to restore public trust. His association with Epstein exemplifies the sense of entitlement and impunity often seen among the powerful, who seem willing to disregard morality for personal connections or perceived advantages. This scandal continues to serve as a glaring example of how unchecked privilege can lead to ethical and legal failures, eroding public faith in institutions meant to uphold integrity.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsources:https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2021/oct/29/prince-andrew-virginia-giuffre-lawsuithttps://nypost.com/2021/09/13/prince-andrews-lawyers-to-miss-first-sexual-assault-hearing/source:https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11152877/Charles-WONT-let-Andrew-cold-Jeffrey-Epstein-scandal-rocked-Royal-Family.html

Since it's been several years since I shared the audiobook of volume I, Orobai's Vision, I start out this episode with a synopsis of the first book in the series to bring the listeners up-to-date with the significant plot developments and characters. Chapters 1 and 2 take us back to Laftandiar-Urya where we find that Miraanni is ill, after performing a very public miracle, and Ashi is accosted by a woman claiming to be a priestess of an ancient religion and wants to give her a relic that's been kept secret for 7,000 years, launching her on an unexpected path. The full audiobooks of volume I and II of Tales of Aurduin are available at Audible, Amazon, and the Apple Bookstore. The audiobook for volume III, The Alchemist and the Eagle, is currently in production and coming soon in 2025.

This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit wisdomofcrowds.liveOfficial WoC house philosopher Samuel Kimbriel joins Shadi Hamid and Damir Marusic to discuss the role that ideas had in the recent elections. Specifically, they focus on whether it was bad ideas or bad political strategy that doomed the Dems.Sam insists that the Democrats failed because liberalism as we understand it has become weak, devoid of ideas and moral persuasion. Liberals, Sam insists, constantly shift from wanting to be a player in the political contest, to a referee of the same. They argue for their side and its views, until they start losing in the contest. If they start losing, they shift to a referee role, and try to rule out the legitimacy of certain opposing ideas (for example, immigration restrictionism). What we need, Sam says, is a renewed liberalism that is unafraid to make moral claims — one that plays and plays well, without tying to also be the referee.Damir disagrees. He isn't sure whether what happened on November 5 will be seen as revolutionary — that is, an overthrow of a previous order — or merely “an empty, peasant backlash,” though he is leaning toward the latter. Regardless, “what happened is a failure of rulership, not ideas,” he says. “It was not a failure of metaphysics, but of arguments.”Shadi stands between Sam and Damir, sometimes as referee, sometimes as a player on Sam's side. He supports democracy and the idea of moral politics. And he believes that Damir “always attacks us [Sam and Shadi] for having beliefs,” while hiding or being in denial of his own implicit metaphysical convictions. In the bonus segment for paid subscribers, Sam and Shadi corner Damir into finally admitting that he does indeed have metaphysical convictions of his own, even if that conviction is materialism. Damir talks about how he's reading the Bible this winter, and he gives us his own definition of the word “politics.” It's a rollicking discussion that you won't want to miss!Required Reading:* Western Civilization: Paleolithic Man to the Emergence of European Powers — the textbook Sam cites at the beginning of the episode (Volume I, Volume II). * The Problem of Democracy: America, the Middle East, and the Rise and Fall of an Idea by Shadi Hamid (Amazon). * “Republicans See a Better Economic Outlook. Now It's Democrats Who Don't” (New York Times). * Sam's piece on the French Revolution and the contemporary Left (WoC). * Ordinary Vices by Judith Shklar (Amazon). * Damir's piece about peasant revolts (WoC).* “How the Ivy League Broke America” by David Brooks (The Atlantic). * “A Letter Concerning Toleration” by John Locke (WikiSource). Adults like to think of kids as the embodiment of innocence—and in a lot of ways, they are. But…remember what it was like to actually be a kid? Did other kids seem innocent to us then? Not so much. The playground could be a battle zone. Gym class could be Lord of the Flies. Kids have strong, complicated emotions just like we do, but without the impulse control that comes with a fully-developed prefrontal cortex. Most of the time, the worst thing that comes from that is a tantrum in the middle of Costco, or a loud, teary breakup in the middle school cafeteria that ends up going viral on TikTok. But for some kids, just like some adults, the outcome is much, much darker. Case 1: The story of a 14 year old aspiring serial killer who murdered his unsuspecting best friend.
