This week on Look Forward, we break down Trump's record-breaking State of the Union disaster, White House manipulation of prediction markets, and the ongoing Epstein investigation chaos.Trump's State of the Union Fiction:Trump delivered the longest SOTU in modern history—1 hour and 48 minutes of detachment from reality. He ignored the economic pain Americans are feeling, lied about job creation (2025 was the worst year since 2003), claimed $18 trillion in investments that doesn't exist, and boasted about stock markets that aren't predictive or telling off the actual economy felt by the average American. We fact-check his most egregious lies and explain why this speech could cost Republicans the midterms.Prediction Market Corruption:The White House appears to be manipulating prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket ahead of major speeches. Over $12 million was wagered on SOTU details—from speech length to specific words Trump would say. Senator Chris Murphy calls it "just insane" that Trump's inner circle can profit by knowing speech details in advance. We explain how this gambling-meets-politics scheme works and why it's basically legal insider trading.Epstein Investigation Update:Hillary Clinton's closed-door Epstein deposition was derailed when Rep. Lauren Boebert violated committee rules by leaking a photo to MAGA influencer, Benny Johnson. Meanwhile, the DOJ quietly scrubbed records showing the FBI interviewed a Trump accuser FOUR TIMES about allegations he assaulted her as a minor through Epstein in the 1980s. Those interview records have now disappeared from public files.Plus:- Cuba strangulation: Trump's quiet campaign to collapse the Cuban economy- Democrats fighting to restore IRS Direct File- Rep. Doc had to pre-record today's racing report thanks to County Materials in Holmen and Eau Claire! We also highlighted some things to look forward to in the month of March, including some movies & TV shows, sporting events, and some of the holidays! Speaking of sports, the Bucks play tonight, the Badgers are in Washington tomorrow afternoon, the US Women's Hockey team is going to be partying in Las Vegas with Flavor Flav…while the US Men's Hockey team had their bar tab taken care of by Pat McAfee! A burger battle is heating up between McDonald's & Burger King…as Mickey-D's is introducing the "Big Arch Burger" and BK is apparently revamping it's Whopper. Plus, have you seen the new Johnsonville sausage flavor? Not sure I want to try this one. In the news this morning, a woman gives birth to a MASSIVE baby, the guy in Wyoming who dragged a dying wolf into a bar after hitting it with his snowmobile reaches a plea deal, and the grandfather with the "PB4WEGO" license plate gets a bit of help from the governor of NY. Elsewhere in sports, the NFL player's report gets leaked, Tony Dungy is apparently out at "Sunday Night Football", a couple of college basketball players helped out when those two cars fell into a sinkhole in Nebraska, and the Orlando Magic have a very unique collaboration coming up! Couple of dog stories this morning - A snowplow driver in New York rescued a couple of dogs that were running loose on the highway, and an old guy in Canada fell down and was rescued by his neighbor's pooch! And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a couple who were seriously injured by some antlers that fell off the wall at a Longhorn steakouse, a couple who apparently beat each other with frying pans, a woman who tried to use movie prop money to bail a friend out of jail, and a guy who was flashing people at a Denny's.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The BAFTA Incident — Disability, Race & Media Responsibility

Black on Black Cinema

This week on Black on Black Cinema, the crew returns to introduce the next film to the reviewed, "Soul Men." The 2008 film follows two estranged soul-singing legends who agree to participate in a reunion performance at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson and the late great Bernie Mac. Available to stream for free on Tubi. The random topic this week we tackle the complex and difficult incident that unfolded at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards when John Davidson, a Tourette's syndrome activist and subject of the nominated film "I Swear," involuntarily shouted racial slurs—including the N-word—while Black actors Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented an award. This isn't a simple story. It's a collision of disability rights, anti-Black racism, media responsibility, and institutional failure. What happened: Davidson, who has spent decades advocating for Tourette's awareness, experienced involuntary vocal tics throughout the ceremony. His condition causes coprolalia—the uncontrollable utterance of socially inappropriate words. When Jordan and Lindo took the stage, Davidson's tic produced the N-word, audible throughout the venue. The BBC's failure: Despite broadcasting on a two-hour delay (giving them time to edit), the BBC left the slur in the broadcast AND on iPlayer for 15+ hours. Yet they DID edit out other content, including a "Free Palestine" statement and political jokes. The selective editing reveals a catastrophic failure/purposeful behavior in judgment and priorities. The complications: This incident sits at the painful intersection of two marginalized communities. Davidson has no control over his tics—they represent the opposite of his actual beliefs. Yet Black attendees, including production designer Hannah Beachler, experienced real racial trauma. Lindo told Vanity Fair he wished BAFTA had spoken to them afterward. Host Alan Cumming's apology said "sorry if you were offended" was woefully inadequate. Why this matters for cinema: The film "I Swear" was nominated for multiple BAFTAs and won three awards, including Best Actor for Robert Aramayo's portrayal of Davidson. The movie exists to educate about Tourette's. Yet BAFTA and the BBC failed both the disability community AND the Black community in how they handled this moment. We discuss:- The impossible position both communities were put in due to the BBC's actions or lack thereof- Why institutional preparation and response failed catastrophically- The difference between individual accountability and systemic responsibility- How ableism and anti-Black racism played out in the aftermath (including the idea of "he meant that shit" comments)- What should have happened vs. what did happen- The broader conversation about representation, disability, and whose comfort gets prioritizedThis is a conversation about nuance, compassion, and holding institutions accountable when they fail vulnerable communities.Full Black on Black Cinema episodes coming soon. After a therapy session with the enigmatic Dr. Amiri (Stephen McKinley Henderson), Clay encounters Lula (Kate Mara), a seductive and sinister white woman on a New York subway, who draws him into a dangerous psychological game of cat and mouse that forces him to confront his identity, his marriage, and the concept of double consciousness. Directed by Andre Gaines and co-written with Qasim Basir, the film also stars Aldis Hodge and Lauren E. Banks. Credit Risks of The Current AI Data Center Infrastructure Investment Boom

The Essential Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 16, 2026 34:02

The exponential expansion of global AI investment looks set to continue at scale in 2026, with hyperscalers on track to spend $625 billion in aggregate data center capex by year-end. The boom is also lifting players that supply the ecosystem, with near-term demandoutstripping the supply of new data center capacity and corresponding investments materially boosting growth in the broader U.S. economy. Whether AI adoption and monetization will accelerate enough to turn this early investment‑led economic boost into lasting productivity and financial returns is yet to be seen.   But as funding for this expansion shifts from equity markets to debt markets (fueled largely by private credit), some risks have elevated—as a result, in part, from the surge of investments that increasingly rely on debt and the rise of increasingly complex and circular financing structures.   In this episode of the Look Forward Podcast, co-host Molly Mintz explores the credit risks of data center development with Pierre Georges, Managing Director and Head of Infrastructure Research at S&P Global Ratings.   Their conversation explores the 2026 digital infrastructure outlook; analyzes the execution, financial, and contractual risks of the AI-driven data center buildout from a credit perspective; and highlights the development dynamics of power and grid bottlenecks, supply -chain constraints, and tensions between growth, affordability, and decarbonization. We also discuss S&P Global Ratings' view on what could lead to the emergence of winners and losers across the ecosystem, and the leading indicators to watch for an AI investment slowdown—including changes in enterprise adoption and monetization, supply and demand dynamics across the semiconductor supply chain, performance signals from key partners, the scale of hyperscalers' capex plans, and major players' investment behavior.  For more Look Forward content, please visit the Look Forward homepage.

As always, the Coode Street Motel Six bestrides continents, so after briefly comparing notes on the weather in Perth and Chicago, Gary and Jonathan get down to it and chat about the subjects of the moment.   How do you talk about books and what was the weather like? The importance of settings in fiction, especially regarding climate and weather, and the broader question of whether readers can ever fully appreciate a setting dissimilar to their own and how book reviewers might take this into account. This includes a brief discussion of translated fiction—a welcome new category in this year's Locus Awards.   Anthologies and activism The significance of advocacy anthologies that may reflect anything from feminist SF (as in Vonda McIntyre and Susan Janice Anderson's Aurora: Beyond Equality (1976) to antiwar works to promoting the New Wave.    Books we're looking forward to In a new segment,  we list a few books that we are looking forward to that will be published in the coming weeks.   Jonathan talks about A.G. Slatter's A Forest, Darkly, Adrian Tchaikovsky's Pretenders to the Throne of God, Paul McAuley's Loss Protocol, and A.D Sui's debut The Iron Garden Sutra.   Gary's list includes  Rebecca Roanhorse's River of Bones and Other Stories and The Best of Adrian Tchaikovsky, a novella by Ian McDonald, Boy, with Accidental Dinosaur, and nonfiction study of SFF by Ada Palmer and Jo Walton, Trace Elements: Conversations on the Project of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

In this early-2026 market check-in, host Andy Critchlow (S&P Global Energy) sits down with Jim Burkhard (Head of Crude Oil Analytics and Research) to unpack a turbulent start to the year for oil prices—driven by geopolitics and real-world supply disruptions. They examine three major forces shaping markets: uncertainty around Iran, shifting expectations for Venezuelan heavy crude exports and potential production growth, and Black Sea loading issues affecting Kazakh flows.    The conversation also digs into the "heavy crude" constraint (including the need for diluent), what it would take for international oil companies to reinvest in Venezuela, and why US onshore output is proving more resilient even in a lower-price environment. On the demand side, they explore how China's gasoline and diesel use has plateaued amid rapid EV adoption, what that means for global growth, and whether India (and potentially parts of Africa) can become the next big demand engine.   For more Look Forward content, please visit the Look Forward homepage.

What a week! It's finally come to an end, and looks like we might get some snow on Sunday. On the show today, Doc joined us just after 8am for his first Racing Report of the year thanks to County Materials in Holmen. And with February beginning on Sunday, we hooked you up with a list of things to look forward to in the next month. In sports, the Bucks lost to the Wizards last night, the Badgers play tomorrow against Ohio State, legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz is in hospice care, Patrick Kane sets an NHL record, and Olympic gold medalist Sha'Carri Richardson is arrested in Florida. We told you what's on TV this weekend and what's new in theaters. Also, check out this new dating show coming out on Netflix where people don't reveal their ages to the prospective dates. Apparently, there's a new sub-genre of Rock music that's taking the world by storm and it's a rival to "Divorced Dad Rock". They're calling it "Cigarette Mom Rock". Elsewhere in sports, a couple of the NFL Hall of Fame voters have stepped forward to reveal why they didn't vote for Bill Belichick on his first ballot, and Caitlin Clark is continuing to expand her portfolio. Another day, another rescue on the ice. This time, it's a dog that fell through the ice on a frozen lake in St. Louis that was saved by the fire department. And a high school senior from Minnesota is in the news for paying for a woman's shopping items after her card got declined at a Walmart. With the weather being so cold recently, we discussed some car hacks you might want to try. Check out this list of disgusting habits that most of us secretly think are normal. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a dude who got crushed TWICE in the back of a garbage truck but survived, a snowplow driver in Philly who's in trouble for intentionally burying people's cars with snow, a woman's cream cheese review that went viral because of her majestical hair, and a #FloridaMan who used fake movie money to buy flowers & chocolates for a stripper he was in love with.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Amid geopolitical friction, economic uncertainty, and rapid technological disruption, the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos convenes global leaders around a "spirit of dialogue." In this episode of the Look Forward Podcast, host Molly sits down with S&P Global Ratings Chief Global Economist Paul Gruenwald and S&P Global Energy Chief Strategist Atul Arya, fresh to Switzerland, to unpack what mattered most—and what it signals for 2026.   Together, they explore how AI is "moving the macro needle" through a data-center investment boom, and whether the next phase will deliver the productivity gains markets are already pricing in. They also dig into AI's less-discussed constraint: power—from turbine shortages and transmission bottlenecks to rising electricity prices and the collision between hyperscalers' speed and the power sector's slower build cycle.   The conversation covers to energy markets and geopolitics, including why recent shocks haven't yet upended oil pricing, why the debate has shifted from energy transition to energy expansion, and how LNG and trade balances are becoming increasingly intertwined. Additionally, the interview covers how Davos attendees expressed attention to the erosion of trust in the global world order and why a more fragmented approach may become the status quo.   For more Look Forward content, please visit the Look Forward homepage.   More From Paul and Atul: Look Forward Journal: Data Center Frontiers The CERAWeek Podcast with Atul Arya Subscribe to Paul Gruenwald's "Essential Economics Newsletter" on Linkedin

It's easy to get stuck in the hard of the now — the exhaustion, the chaos, the “will this phase ever end?” feelings. It's also easy to already feel nostalgic for stages that are flying by. But in this episode, we wanted to gently shift the perspective and remind ourselves (and you) that every new stage brings its own kind of magic. We're sharing a few of the moments from right now that we're genuinely loving — the things that have surprised us, softened us, and made us realize how sweet these later stages can be.In this episode, we talk about: Making real mom friendships with school moms who are in the same phase of life Watching our kids make friends and start building their own little social worlds Those small-but-big moments of independence, when your child can suddenly do things on their ownThis conversation is for the moms who feel caught between missing the past and surviving the present — and need a reminder that there's still so much goodness ahead.Wherever you are in motherhood, we hope this episode helps you take a deep breath and look forward with a little more excitement
