It was a time of political unrest on a campus that held rallies to protest the Vietnam War. Paul was lucky his draft number was in the 100s, but some of their friends with lower numbers dodged by heading into Canada. Gerri lost a dear friend on May 4 and knew others who were killed in combat.The violence at Kent State started when National Guardsmen ordered the protesters to disperse, escalated with tear gas that was retaliated with students allegedly throwing rocks (Gerri didn’t see any) and concluded with over 60 rounds of ammunition being fired at the students. In 2016 the 17-acre Commons was designated a National Historic Landmark, but Gerri has revised the site of the May 4 Massacre every year.

On the third installment of my month-long cycle journey Craig and I set up camp on the edge of a minefield and on another night have a private observation tower. We visit Zadar and listen to the sea sing and investigate an abandoned hotel on Krk Island. Elderflower radler is my favorite Croatian beverage. Cres Island is famous for it’s sheep, that lounge in the the olive groves. We set up camp on the tennis court of an abandoned hotel on Krk Island. We drank coffee in an observation tower outside of Pula.

TJ took improv comedy classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade in LA.TJ and I met at the Jack Mountain Bushcraft School in Masardis, Maine.Before coming to Bushcraft school, TJ attended bike school in Ashland, Oregon.Souther Oregon University offers a Masters in Outdoor Adventure & Expedition Leadership.TJ and I both considered enrolling in a National Outdoor Leadership School course but ultimately decided not to enroll. Once TJ and I went to a bar in Ashland, ME specifically to watch the Miami Dolphins play. It took several phone calls to the boss man and cable finagling but they eventually put on the game. Forgetting Sarah Marshal is a great film, look for TJ clapping in the wedding scene. Miracle is one of TJ’s favorite films, it tells the true story of the 1980 US hockey team’s victory over Russia. Ernest Shackelton was a professional explorer known for his expeditions to Antartica. He’s also one of TJ’s heros. If you visit TJ’s home state of South Dakota, stop by the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Raccoon Creek State Park is one of Pennsylvania's largest state park and was founded in the 1930s. The Appalachian Trail runs 2100 miles from Georgia to Maine. People from all over the world through hike and section hike portions of the trail each year.The Boy Scouts of America teaches skills and character building. They also sell popcorn. Sam promised us a delivery to Bushcraft school. He did not deliver on that promise. I am not bitter about it. Sam plans to enroll at the University of Toledo to study mechanical engineering next fall. My parents met at UT. Go rockets.Sam attended Shaker Heights High School on the east side of Cleveland. I’m a west sider myself, but Shaker has a great reputation of being a big, diverse, super arts-filled school district.
