Gerri lost a dear friend on May 4 and knew others who were killed in combat.The violence at Kent State started when National Guardsmen ordered the protesters to disperse, escalated with tear gas that was retaliated with students allegedly throwing rocks (Gerri didn’t see any) and concluded with over 60 rounds of ammunition being fired at the students. In 2016 the 17-acre Commons was designated a National Historic Landmark, but Gerri has revised the site of the May 4 Massacre every year.

Craig and I visit Krka National Park, the Sibinek Falconry Center and visit Dubrovnik. We end the trip with a flight through Germany, a bus through Bosnia and a return day in Milan.

On the third installment of my month-long cycle journey Craig and I set up camp on the edge of a minefield and on another night have a private observation tower. We visit Zadar and listen to the sea sing and investigate an abandoned hotel on Krk Island. Elderflower radler is my favorite Croatian beverage. TJ took improv comedy classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade in LA.TJ and I met at the Jack Mountain Bushcraft School in Masardis, Maine.Before coming to Bushcraft school, TJ attended bike school in Ashland, Oregon.Souther Oregon University offers a Masters in Outdoor Adventure & Expedition Leadership.TJ and I both considered enrolling in a National Outdoor Leadership School course but ultimately decided not to enroll. Once TJ and I went to a bar in Ashland, ME specifically to watch the Miami Dolphins play. It took several phone calls to the boss man and cable finagling but they eventually put on the game. Forgetting Sarah Marshal is a great film, look for TJ clapping in the wedding scene. Miracle is one of TJ’s favorite films, it tells the true story of the 1980 US hockey team’s victory over Russia. Ernest Shackelton was a professional explorer known for his expeditions to Antartica. He’s also one of TJ’s heros. If you visit TJ’s home state of South Dakota, stop by the Crazy Horse Memorial.

Molly Mitchell is an Alaskan Native and an only child. It took her leaving Alaska for the American Southwest to truly appreciate the wildness and grandeur of her home state. She studied at the Jack Mountain Bushcraft school where she learned about medicinal plants and their applications. Molly has worked on farms in New Mexico and Alaska where she has a dream to homestead at her dry, solar-powered cabin.

Raccoon Creek State Park is one of Pennsylvania's largest state park and was founded in the 1930s. The Appalachian Trail runs 2100 miles from Georgia to Maine. People from all over the world through hike and section hike portions of the trail each year.The Boy Scouts of America teaches skills and character building. They also sell popcorn. Sam promised us a delivery to Bushcraft school. He did not deliver on that promise. I am not bitter about it. Sam plans to enroll at the University of Toledo to study mechanical engineering next fall. My parents met at UT. Go rockets.Sam attended Shaker Heights High School on the east side of Cleveland. I’m a west sider myself, but Shaker has a great reputation of being a big, diverse, super arts-filled school district.

Traditional public school wasn't for 18-year-old Zander Melillo. The Quebec native filled his time painting graffiti, hanging out with his girlfriend and working in restaurants. He's now working towards a dream of buying land and running a sustainable living community.

Colin Clifford left home at 18 to see the world as a Marine. After his service he returned to his home state of Maine to learn the art of Bushcraft. He's now a registered Maine Guide and a Teaching Assistant at the Jack Mountain Bushcraft School.

At a family reunion I talk to my cousin Becca and her boyfriend Luke about school, work, love and living out of a van. Luke is an introvert who dropped out of engineering school to become a digital nomad living out of a van and building Web sites. Becca is an extrovert with a wildlife degree but hasn't been able to find work in her field. She met Luke and decided to join him on the open road.

I take my new roommates (Corey and Amy, also American teachers abroad) on a long bike ride to Xieng Khuan, colloquially known as Buddha Park. We take in the sculptures, climb inside and on top of tall structures and debate the feasibility of a similar attraction for other religions with surprising outcomes. 

I visit a bar in Lakewood, Ohio specializing in mead (alcohol made by fermenting honey with my little sister Marah, friend from Chicago Cynthia, friend from grade school Deborah and Deborah's sister Allison. We try a sampler of mead, sour beer and cider and chat up our bartender about his experience fermenting cabbage, breaking up, starting fresh and moving.

Big change and new experiences, ideas, philosophies are common when the planet Saturn returns to the same celestial location it occupied at our birth. These can be times of great struggle and obstacles, new challenges and responsibilities that often mark time as a clear “before” and “after.” Host Regina Beach turned 30, quit her job and is heading to Laos to live and work. Come along on this life altering journey.
