“And the point is, you can do it. You have more strength than you think you do. You can go through these tough situations. You move through that adversity, and you move through those struggles. And you keep going.”        Susan J. Godwin, fervent educator, writer, freelance artist, and today's guest on Fierce Conversations with Toby Head to https://www.youtube.com/@fierceconversationswithtoby to find all video interviews! Transcripts available at https://tobydorr.com/podcast-schedule/ Some of our fierce topics today:  [03:28] It shouldn't be called breaking up, because that implies a quick break. It's more like a taffy pull. [04:50] I discovered a female court of writers in the late 17th century. [09:31] Crazy David was my boyfriend who faked his own death and then showed up at my house in the middle of the night a couple weeks later.  [13:22] I was cocktail waitressing in LA at the world-famous Palomino Club and I waited on Manuel (designer to the stars) and we fell in love and got married and had a baby. [17:19] But it felt if I didn't leave him I would get cancer and die – it was such a toxic unhealthy moment. Susan Godwin is a fervent educator, writer, and freelance artist whose world has always been steeped in books, from Harold and the Purple Crayon; she couldn't resist drawing on her bedroom wall, no matter how many reprimands; to her first job as a library book mender in her Shaker Heights High School basement to teaching English at the prestigious University School of Nashville. A former Oxford scholar, Godwin has received writing awards from the University of Michigan, Middle Tennessee State University, and Bread Loaf School of English. Though writing is her true passion, she is also a visual artist working primarily in oils and pastels. Her home is outside of Nashville, in Dickson, TN, on the banks of a winding Tennessee river, in a hayloft renovated by her sweet, sexy husband, Tony; with help from their rotty, Roady!  Links mentioned in this episode: Susan J. In this episode of the Crack House Chronicles, Donnie and Dale discuss the 1990 murder of Lisa Pruett. She was a popular 16-year-old Shaker Heights High School student who snuck out of her house one late September evening to go visit her boyfriend Dan Dreifort. She was found in the early morning hours stabbed to death before she'd made it to his house. Police would focus on Kevin Young, even bringing him to trial in a nationally televised Court TV case. But a jury found him not guilty, leaving Lisa's murder one of Ohio's most frustrating cold cases. https://crackhousechronicles.com/ Check out our MERCH! https://www.teepublic.com/user/crackhousechronicles Sponsors: https://betterhelp.com/chc If you use this link or Promo Code CHC, BetterHELP will give you 10% off your first months bill. Later, they dive into the case of Lisa Pruett, a popular 16-year-old girl who was found murdered in a Shaker Heights, OH neighborhood in 1990. This complex case involves many different “characters,” lots of gossip and rumors, and tragedy. On the fateful night of her murder, Lisa was supposed to be sneaking out to see her boyfriend, Dan, leading him to be a primary suspect in the case. In a turn of events, a classmate of Dan and Lisa at Shaker Heights High School would ultimately be indicted for the murder. After a lengthy trial and 10 hours of deliberation by a jury, this classmate was ultimately found not guilty and no other charges have been brought in Lisa's case. The guy would be like, let me call you back. He'd come back an hour later and be like, if you overnight a cashier's check, it's yours. 41:00 - The worst part Scott is that it wasn't even all at once. It was a series of 12 loans for about $20,000 each. That's how much I needed to make payroll every two weeks. 50:00 - For me, for my spouse, we have already spent a lot of time talking about what's truly important to us. So we can go back to that, and we get some psychological safety from it. I'm not saying it's perfect, you know, we still have our issues. 01:10:00 - Final Words   Our Final Words of the Show:I think people are, are focusing more on this now. And are starting pay attention. I think people understand that we're going to have an economic downturn. And so it's time to start to figure out how you're going to rock it, instead of getting rocked by it. Don't be Don't be like me, man. Don't be like me and have to borrow a quarter of a million bucks from your mother in law.   Action Steps:Support our 501c-3 non-profit and visit http://fuelfoundations.org (http://fuelfoundations.org) Help us reach more people with 5 Star Reviews, visit iTunes and https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/livethefuel/id1150969758?mt=2 (Submit a Review) Join our private Facebook community https://www.facebook.com/groups/fuelupmindset/ (The FUEL UP Mindset)

Jonathan Slain’s book, Rock the Recession: How Successful Leaders Prepare For, Thrive During, and Create Wealth After Downturns came out in September 2019 and is a #1 Amazon Best Seller. Jonathan coaches high growth leadership teams across the United States to implement the Entrepreneurial Operating System®, also known as "Traction". He focuses on working with entrepreneurial niche/specialty firms and large corporations, spending over 100 days per year working with teams just like yours. Jonathan was Valedictorian of his graduating class and had the highest GPA ever in the history of Shaker Heights High School, where he was also voted “Next Bill Gates and Least Likely to Lose his Virginity.”    “There’s always going to be a disruption. Embrace it, and have a plan for everything.” Jonathan Slain   Worst investment ever Forging a business partnership Jonathan was working as an investment banker when he received a call from his brother-in-law asking him to help evaluate gym franchises that he wanted to invest in. Jonathan agreed to accompany him to Denver, where the franchises were. On the flight home from Denver to Cleveland, Jonathan, on a whim, suggested to his brother that they open the gyms together. His brother-in-law agreed, and Jonathan left his job at the bank and began working with his brother-in-law. Up to a good start Jonathan didn’t bother to do any research and had total trust in his brother-in-law. He believed that the business was going to work. They opened up their first gym in Hudson, Ohio, and went on to scale the business pretty fast. Indeed, the franchise was thriving. In less than five years, they had five units operating, all one-on-one personal training studios. The branches were in five locations across Cleveland, with 25 employees. They broke franchise records by recording the most personal training sessions in the year, the most locations, and the most revenue of any group. The great recession they never saw coming At 25, Jonathan was a thriving franchise owner and was riding the wave of success. Then the great recession hit out of nowhere. They had no plan on what to do at a time of such a crisis. Amid the panic, he came up with a plan to borrow a quarter of a million dollars from his mother-in-law. The business went on to barely survive the recession, but he had to live with the shame of having to borrow from his mother-in-law. Lessons learned You’ve got to have a plan Be sure to have a plan for what you would do if you ever hit an economic downturn. Have a plan for what you’re going to do to reduce expenses, cut overhead, do layoffs, etc. and survive a recession. Create your plan when you’re not stressed out Figure out your plan when things are calm, not when you’re in the middle of a crisis. People tend to make bad decisions when they’re stressed out and emotional. A recession can be an opportunity Not every recession has to be bad for your business. If you’re an entrepreneur and once every couple of years, there’s a significant disruption in your industry, figure out what opportunities come with the disruption. Pounce on these opportunities so that you can benefit from the disruption. Andrew’s takeaways Use stop losses for your stocks Use stop losses when investing in the stock market, especially if you’re a first-time investor. This allows you to predetermine future actions in case of an economic downturn. Don’t wait for an economic downturn, get your plan ready now Don’t wait until everything starts to crumble to come up with a contingency plan. Do it when times are good because then you will be in the right headspace to come up with an airtight plan because you are not panicking. Have both an upside and a downside plan Separate your research into the upside and the downside. By looking at an idea from both angles, you give yourself a chance to step away from the excitement of having an idea and see the ugly side too. In the end, you may just realize that the idea isn’t that attractive, and not worth doing. An upside and downside plan will also help you come up with a plan for when things are going well and when things are bad. Actionable advice Get the book, Rock the Recession: How Successful Leaders Prepare For, Thrive During, and Create Wealth After Downturns and take the 20 questions recession readiness assessment in it. This will help you benchmark how well prepared you are for the recession. Instead of it being subjective, you’ll get a score from zero to 100. Zero is not prepared at all. 100 is looking forward to the recession, because of how well prepared you are. Once you get your score, then you can decide what you want to do with that information. No. 1 goal for the next 12 months In 2020, Jonathan is focused on being at home, in Cleveland, more. He plans to get better at his virtual meeting capabilities so that he can have more virtual clients. She was found in the early morning hours in his neighbor's lawn, stabbed to death before she'd made it to his house. Police would focus on a fellow student, Kevin Young, even bringing him to trial in a nationally televised Court TV case. How many leaders who shape policy in American institutions believe in the racist myth that African-Americans accept gun violence in our communities as a norm?  Dehumanizing African-Americans in the justice system and in mainstream media has kept victims from receiving needed treatment and remedies in medical settings such as emergency rooms, as well as receiving needed counseling.  Racial bias may have also blinded us to possible preventative solutions beyond criminalization.  Epidemiologist Lisa Rose-Rodriguez discusses her work to decrease mortality rates for African American men and boys through counseling and improvement of interpersonal connections.  As a board member of Connecticut's Mothers United Against Violence, Lisa has worked with victims, and has advocated for a reinterpretation of gun violence as a public health issue that must be remedied by preventative counseling and treatment through local/state institutions, as well as nonprofit and grassroot organizations. Lisa Rose-Rodriguez was born in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduating from Shaker Heights High School, she matriculated at Howard University in Washington, DC. There she upheld the tradition of attending an HBCU for three generations. She received a Masters of Public Health at the University of Connecticut and is completing a Ph.D. in Media Philosophy at the European Graduate School.
