In this podcast we talk about the vital role of small businesses in driving growth into the UK economy as they invest in skills and technology to lead innovation and new thinking across the infrastructure sector. And as we approach the General Election and all parties talk about the need to drive growth, it is a great moment to talk about how government can stimulate this massive engine. While the big projects and large global consultant and contractors tend to steal the headlines and occupy the seats of power and influence across the sector, the reality is that it is the army of small and medium size enterprises that really keep the entire sector going; According to Build UK, the construction sector employs 3.1 million people, which is 1 in 10 of the UK workforce, and it has the largest share of self- employed people across the economy at 19%. And across its members, it adds, he average size of the workforce of was 2,621, with 82% of those directly employed. But we need a whole lot more talent, In fact, according to a recent report by the Construction Industry Training Board, it is estimated that for the sector to maintain its required output, it needs to recruit over 45,000 new people every year for the next five years. It's a massive challenge and a vital challenge if we are to truly leverage the power of these small businesses that sit at the heart of the industry and make it all happen. So who better to discuss this with than, Julie White, managing director of specialist contractor D-Drill and chair of Build UK, the body representing the UK contractors. When I mean you're in your professional life and also personal life, there are some meetings that seem to be very relevant. You have a lot of expectations. And, you have meetings that are random or you don't really know why you've been connected to this person. The cost of living crisis has hit many New Zealanders hard, but some help is on the way. From the beginning of April, increases to the pension, benefit, student allowance and childcare subsidies will benefit 1.4 million Kiwis. At the same time, the minimum wage will also increase by $1.50 to $22.70 per hour. Hospitality NZ CEO Julie White joined the Mike Hosking Breakfast to discuss how the increase will impact on businesses. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
“We have now forward looking data, data that allows us to look 30 years into the future and understand how and where we're vulnerable. The different hazards, by the way that we have, are flood, wind, drought, and wildfire. And what we're doing with that is, we're integrating it into the network design and planning processes, as well as the vulnerability modeling for assets that are in the ground today.” Jessica Filante Farrington on Electric Ladies Podcast We all experience how we lose power to our homes, businesses, cell phones, etc. in the devastating destruction caused by extreme storms, hurricanes, tornadoes, wildfires and more, including due to the rising impact of climate change. I've always wondered what it would take to shore up that infrastructure that undergirds our everyday lives. Well now a partnership between AT&T, Argonne National Labs and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency are figuring out how to better mitigate it – and its free for all of us. Listen to Jessica Filante Farrington, AT&T, Director of Global Sustainability describe the partnership and its new portal, and what it could do for us in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: How the new ClimRR portal will help cities, companies, real estate developers, and really anyone predict the climate impact in their area for 30 years into the future and increase their resilience. How AT&T will use the portal to shore up its own network so its customers have more consistent cell phone service especially in weather crises. How the new Infrastructure Investment Act funding will make a difference. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “Don't be hesitant to jump into the sustainability space because you don't feel you have the technical chops yet. That doesn't mean you don't have to get them, but like don't let it discourage you at the onset. And it can be an advantage because you're often communicating with people who are not climate savvy. And I guess the other piece in terms of how much risk to bring into your life,…During Covid, a lot of us parents became sort of the chief resilience officers of our own household. So, how do we manage all the risk and how do we adapt?... I just feel so passionate about inviting more women and having more women to work with in this space.” Jessica Filante Farrington on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's Forbes article on this new portal here and others related here too. “If we want to accelerate all the efforts in order to decarbonize and to fight against climate change, we have to go three times faster, three times stronger. We have all the technologies, but how to speed it up, how to make sure that it's deployed even faster,” Gwenaelle Avice Huet on Electric Ladies Podcast There's a quiet transformation happening in our communities that will literally save lives, and it's led by women who don't make the headlines. It's the infrastructure that undergirds our everyday lives. These are the systems that we only notice when they break down, or we have service delays or other problems, including when extreme weather takes them out. Listen to Gwenaelle Avice Huet, Chief Strategy and Sustainability Officer of Schneider Electric discuss what our infrastructure needs to be more resilient and what's being done to do so in this enlightening discussion with Electric Ladies host Joan Michelson. You'll hear about: How to increase the resilience of our current infrastructure. How the new Infrastructure Investment Act funding will make a difference. How her experience in France and in various aspects of the energy and sustainability sector, gives her a unique perspective. Plus, insightful career advice, such as… “I would say first sometimes we are, as a woman, we are, I would say forbidding ourselves some evolutions because we think it's either inappropriate or because we want to have the right balance between private life and professional life. And we fear that an evolution could jeopardize this balance. I would say that you have to think internally how to make it happen and never give up on what you feel inside.” Gwenaelle Avice Huet on Electric Ladies Podcast Read Joan's related Forbes articles here too. Using Landscapes To Combat Climate Change - Pamela Conrad, Landscape Architect “Landscape architecture involves the planning, design, management, and nurturing of the exterior built and natural environments. So, landscape architects is a professional degree and…we design places like parks and campuses, streetscapes trails, plazas, residences, and other projects that strengthen communities. And … our work also involves increasing resilience to climate impacts and drawing down carbon in communities in an equitable way.” Pamela Conrad on Electric Ladies Podcast You might take for granted how lovely the park near your home is, or your corporate or university campus, but every inch of it was deliberately designed (unless it's a national park), from the way it uses water and integrates with the area's water systems, to the types of plants, trees and grass – including to mitigate climate change. How? Listen to this fascinating interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with Pamela Conrad, Landscape Architect, and you'll look at parks and campuses in a whole new way. You'll hear: How water systems are designed in landscapes to conserve and reuse water, including integrating with the nearby buildings. What a difference the Inflation Reduction Act and Infrastructure Investment Act will make for communities that want to restore their natural ecosystems, How landscaping can mitigate climate change, and reduce emissions, energy use and maintenance. What “Go Beyond Zero” means and how to do it. Plus, insightful career advice such as….: “One, knowing and understanding your own strengths and then asking, ‘what action is needed around climate action?' And then especially, ‘where do you see the gaps?' And then fill it, jump into those spaces …And then the third… is to ask yourself that question of what brings you joy…And I think that to make sure that what you're doing is something that you love, it can help prevent burnout.” Pamela Conrad on Electric Ladies podcast You'll also want to listen to: (some might be recorded under our previous name, Green Connections Radio) Diane Regas, Trust for Public Lands, on how parks mitigate climate change and create healthy communities. “So we went out to the communities and we met with them and said,' what do you want in your downtown? There's this rail line that goes through the middle of your downtown. What's your vision for that?' And they all said, we think rail is a really big part of our future right now….We'd love to use that to spur economic development in our downtown. We think it creates foot traffic and then creates economic opportunity….How can you help us as small towns? How do we make the most of that?” Julie White on Electric Ladies Podcast Public transportation today looks very different than ever before. It's because communities are different, “commuting” is different, and what makes up “public transportation” is different. Covid is only part of it. Systems have changed, priorities have changed and funding options have changed, especially with the new federal legislation too. How so? Listen to this fascinating interview on Electric Ladies Podcast with Julie White, Deputy Secretary of Transportation in North Carolina, a state that take “multi-modal” to a whole new level. You'll hear: How communities look at how they get from point A to point B in this brave new world of mobility. How NC DOT got to know what their communities need – in a state with a wide range of types of communities – and what we can learn from them. What kind of impact the new federal legislation and funding is having and will have as it rolls out across the country. What “institutionalizing change” means and how NDCOT is doing it. Plus, insightful career advice from Julie's many years in state government and transportation, such as….: “First, have a proactive plan. So, if you don't know where you want to go, you cannot get there, right? So, map out what is it you want to do with your career and map out a proactive plan to get there. And then, the second step is, be willing to throw the plan away…. But the point of the plan was, I'm not willing to let life happen to me. I'm going to make life happen. Despite dozens of changes to immigration settings announced yesterday, Hospitality NZ is warning restaurants, cafes and bars could miss out on desperately needed business because they've been left out. Chefs and other much needed hospitality roles weren't part of the government's announcement. This year, some restaurants have had to close their doors because they can't find chefs, and Hospitality NZ chief executive Julie White says more pain could be on the way. She spoke to Kim Hill.

Dennis and Julie delve into thoughts versus actions. Dennis had a realization in Demark… are people that are taken care of by the government happy or just content? Julie is doing her utmost to live a completely honest life, but obeying traffic laws/signs when no one is around, and white lies may be inevitable. Happiness requires effort… no pain no gain. Fun is what you experience during the moment… happiness is what you experience after the moment. Julie has discovered that developing an internal infrastructure helps lead to happiness. The greatest generation didn't pass on the values and wisdom that they lived by. The deadening of younger generations began last century with the advent of television and the unleashing of social media on society. Dennis recalls one on the most memorable calls of his career, which leads him to clarify that God judges your actions, not your thoughts. Listeners responded to acknowledging your “dark side,” from episode #36. You control whether your thoughts become your actions. Dennis clarifies some fundamental differences between Judaism and Christianity. Judaism brought laws and judgement of actions to humanity, while Christianity brought faith and judgement of thoughts. Men lust… those who say they don't are lying to themselves. Dennis learned at an early age that the will to do bad, leads us to do good. Do Christians really believe Dennis is going to hell? In June 2021, Julie invented a product to enhance the calf area of the body because she was not happy with hers (we are all our own worst critics, right?) In March 2022, she hired a marketing expert to help build awareness of the product, and what happened next both scared and excited her! Jackelyn of Jackelyn Dacanay Consulting, after receiving the product, decided to wear them in her bra as opposed to on her leg, and VOILA, BODYMOONS™️ was born! The moral of the story is she now has a product that can be worn on multiple body parts versus one, giving you the freedom to enhance yourself however and wherever YOU want. Your body, Your choice!
