In this episode, the guys revisit the subject of their podcast...sports parents. They started this project to help parents find self awareness while helping their child navigate their way along the path of youth sports. The guys aren't perfect and they will be the first to tell you. As sport parents, we have an additional responsibility to our children. We need to teach them that competition is their most valuable training partner. Dealing with the wins and loses correctly will only set them up for success when the real world hits. They learn how to achieve peak performance through dedication and commitment, all while learning how to strengthen their weaknesses. But with this teaching, we need to let them learn and struggle on their own path while we provide support. We need to be their biggest fans, their biggest cheerleaders. And that's it! Unless we are stepping up to be the coach, director, or manager; we need to be hands off and put out trust in the system. We need to back the coach and not second guess their philosophies or motives. We need to fulfill our duties and be the role model for our young athletes to follow. We have found the ones that 2nd guess this and dismiss this mindset are the exact problem with youth sports. They know better. They know more. Yet they want to pay someone else to influence and coach their child. The guys sat down with Nathan Longcrier, owner of Balance and Movement (BAM) Fitness in Norco, CA. Nathan started BAM (Balance and Movement) Fitness to help youth athletes understand proper training and performance to prevent injury, and focusing on the ACL with women soccer players has become his specialty. BAM is the first training facility utilizing High speed Cameras & Biomechanical software to analyze youth athletes' biomechanics in order to maximize performance & reduce the risk of injury. He has first hand experience with ACL tears through the women's soccer program at Cal State Fullerton and knew something needed to be done to prevent this epidemic of ACL tears. Nathan is a Certified Athletic Trainer and Movement & Rehab Specialist. For over 20 years, Nathan has worked with athletes of all ages, including some of the best NCAA Div I athletes. Nathan has rehabbed over 250 ACL Reconstruction patients, which consists of a 9-12 month recovery process.  His expertise in sports rehabilitation, athletic training, and mental skills coaching has helped improve hundreds of lives, both physically and mentally. Matt and Ryan both sent their girls in for the analysis and they both registered back high risk, so they now have them enrolled full time in the academy and wanted to share the amazing work Nathan is bringing to the soccer community. The guys had the chance to sit down with Kevin Legg, former professional player, between games at Surf Cup. Our time was limited due to his schedule so we decided to chat about his experience riding the bench. Legg went from a sub that didn't see the pitch much as a U15/U16 player to playing in college (USD) and then taking his skill to the pros. Kevin recalls traveling to the East Coast for a National event and never seeing the field. He didn't let this detour his dreams and fortunately he had supportive parents that didn't put undue pressure on him. His parents didn't say a word to him, his coach or rattle off an unwarranted email asking about his playtime or lack of. In today's soccer environment, we don't think youth players would be that lucky. We look forward to having Legg return as a guest when he has more time to highlight his path and to give insights to both players and parents. Legg is currently the Director of Programs for Crossfire United ECNL and also works with Crossfire United's Pre-ECNL program.
