For long-time listeners of Future Fossils, not much will really change — philosophical investigations in the key of psychedelic futurism, voyages into the edges of what is and can be known, and boldly curious riffs on the immeasurable value of storytelling and imagination have always characterized this show. Many of the episodes I've shared in this last year especially were, effectively, preparations for this latest chapter and play as large a part in my ongoing journey to synthesize and translate everything I've learned from years of independent scholarship and institutional work in esteemed tech, science, and culture orgs…But we are no longer waiting for a weird future to arrive. We're living in it, and shaping it with every act and utterance. So in this “final” episode of Future Fossils before I we bring all of these investigations into the domain of practical applied inquiry, it felt right to ramp from FF to HOTL by sharing my talk and discussion for Stephen Reid's recent online course on Technological Metamodernism. This was a talk that left me feeling very full of hope for what's to come, in which I trace the constellations that connect some of my biggest inspirations, and outline the social transformations I see underway. This is a rapid and dynamic condensation of the big patterns I've noticed in the course of over 500 hours of recorded public dialogue and a lively primer on why I'm focusing on the attention and imagination as the two big forces that will continue to shape our lives in the worlds that come after modernity. It is also just the beginning.Thank you for being part of this adventure.✨ Support & Participate• Become a patron on Substack (my preference) or Patreon(15% off annual memberships until 12/21/24 with the code 15OFF12)• Make a tax-deductible donation to Humans On The Loop• Original paintings available as thank-you gifts for large donors• Hire me as an hourly consultant or advisor on retainer• Buy (most of) the books we discuss from Bookshop.org• Join the Future Fossils Facebook group• Join the Holistic Technology & Wise Innovation and Future Fossils Discord servers• Buy the show's music on Bandcamp — intro “Olympus Mons” from the Martian Arts EP and outro “Sonnet A” from the Double-Edged Sword EP• Read “An Oral History of The End of ‘Reality'”, my story mentioned in this episode.✨ ChaptersChapter 1: Reflections & Announcements (0:00:00)Chapter 2: Co-Evolution with AI and the Limits of Control (0:12:49)Chapter 3: Poetry as the Beginning and End of Scientific Knowledge (0:18:06)Chapter 4: The American Replacement of Nature and the Power of Narrative (0:24:05)Chapter 5: The End of “Reality” & The Beginning of Metamodern Nuance (28:58)Chapter 6: Q&A: Myths, Egregores, and Metamodern Technology vs. Wetiko & Moloch (0:34:52)Chapter 7: Q&A: Chaos Magic & Other Strategies for Navigating Complexity (45:59)Chapter 8: Q&A: Musings on Symbiogenesis & Selfhood (0:50:18)Chapter 9: Q&A: How Do We Legitimize These Approaches? In this episode we meet Preston Vargas, the director of the Center for Black and Indigenous Praxis, and Deanna Jimenez, Assistant Professor in the Somatic Psychology Department and head of the Emerging Black Clinician Fellowship. We discuss strategies of navigating white academic space as a black scholar, the notion of bodies of culture, the importance of Afrocentric Healing modalities, scholar-activism, the importance of arts, as well some fundamental ideas in the emerging field of Black Psychology. Preston Varvas earned an M.A. in Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness as well as a Ph.D. in Transformative Studies from CIIS. He also worked at CIIS as a Teaching Fellow. Preston joins us from the San Francisco Aids Foundation, where he was the Senior Director, Community Partnerships & Engagement. We are thrilled that he will be coming on board to establish the CBIP as a hub for Black and Indigenous thought, wisdoms, and ways of being. Preston carries the blessings, wisdoms, and joys of his ancestors. He was born from the land of his grandmother's ancestral Wampanoag people. It is a place where his liberated Black ancestors found family and home with the local Indigenous communities. It is also the land where his mother's Cape Verdean immigrant ancestors cultivated cranberry bogs and blueberry bushes amidst deciduous forests. Though he lives on the Pacific coast, Preston honors his ancestors, the land-water spirits of Massachusetts who periodically draw him back home. Deanna Jimenez is a somatic/transpersonal psychotherapist in the San Francisco Bay Area. She is Assistant Professor in the Somatic Psychology Department at California Institute of Integral Studies and has a private practice supporting individuals, couples, and organizations. Her clinical work is centered in the dialogue of mental health as it intersects with race, culture, and spirituality. She received a B.A. in International Relations from UC Berkeley studying the efficacy of conflict resolution and cultural awareness in the international workplace. Following a career in corporate and non-profit fields, Deanna received her M.A. from JFK University in Transpersonal Counseling Psychology. **Note: This is a special experiential and participatory workshop. The movements will entail sitting or working on the floor. Please wear comfortable clothing and find a quiet, carpeted or lightly padded area. What allows painful events to continue affecting us over time? How can we transform our relationship to these events, to reduce their traumatic impact? These are the questions Breema Bodywork teachers Angela Porter, MFT, and Alexandra Johnson, MD, will explore in a special experiential and participatory workshop.** Breema Bodywork is a "teaching of the heart, an expression of the unifying principle of Existence." Angela and Alexandra will lead a variety of somatic (body-based) movement practices to help nurture connection between the body and mind, open possibilities to process events in a new way, and strengthen the capacity to assimilate, heal, and live fully. "To experience unity in our life, we must be unified within ourselves. A first step in this process is to bring body and mind together to bring us from a passive state to an active one." Angela Porter, MFT, is an activist and somatic therapist specializing in the treatment of trauma and addictions. She has trained in multiple modalities, including Gestalt Therapy, Somatic Therapy, counseling psychology, and EMDR. As an instructor and practitioner of Breema Bodywork since 1998, Angela uses the mind-body connection as the foundation of her work with individuals and groups. Outside of her Oakland-based private practice, Angela serves as adjunct faculty of graduate psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, JFK University, and The Psychotherapy Institute in Berkeley. She also teaches clinical trainees at various institutes. Formerly a program director and group facilitator at various substance abuse treatment centers, Angela has a passion for supporting veterans, formerly incarcerated men and women, and people with co-occurring mental health concerns. Angela enjoys traveling internationally to teach workshops for therapists, doctors, nurses, midwives, other healthcare professionals, and teachers. Alexandra Johnson, MD, is an integrative and functional medicine physician specializing in family medicine, women's health, and care for the underserved. Even before her medical training, she was interested in holistic care, learning Breema Bodywork and also certifying as a doula. In addition to studying and teaching Breema locally and internationally for over 20 years, she has served as teaching faculty for the University of Colorado and Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia. During her time in Ethiopia, she developed an infection in her brain, leading to significant health challenges, only to reinforce the role of Breema to transform body and mind. Her work in prenatal care, and labor and delivery, incorporates the Breema principles. To facilitate cross-talk between home birth and hospital birth providers, she was featured in the 2016 film, Why Not Home? Her current clinical practice in Northern California integrates Breema, hypnosis, diet, and personalized medical care. She lives in Santa Cruz, CA, with her husband -- who is also a Breema instructor -- and their five children. Please join us in this special offering to experience individual embodiment practices in a collective field.
RiverLogic: Tools to Transform Resistance: Interview with Denise Blanc We have the capacity to soften resistance and support more ease in our communication with anyone- but we will need intention, courage, and willingness to build more vital skills. How Denise Blanc describes herself – I believe that outstanding leadership requires courage – the courage to be authentic, not always to know the answer, and the courage to speak the truth. It also requires the ability to manage relationships, navigate social networks, influence, and inspire others. This understanding is rooted in over two decades of working in Organization Development as a leadership/team coach, facilitator, mediator, and internal senior leader. Whether coaching CEOs, executive directors, engineers, physician leaders, or their teams, I provide practical tools to tackle tough conversations, harness a growth mindset, and create high trust/high-performing cultures. Consulting in both healthcare, high education, and business industries, my key areas of focus include leadership/team development, emotional intelligence, equity & positive change, and conflict transformation. Over my career, I have been the chief architect of three leadership academies (serving 800+ leaders) from Supervisor through C-Suite, all providing a shared language and the skillset to lead across multiple sites and disciplines. While at the St. Joseph Health System, I was the recipient of several awards for leadership design, “best practice for developing future leaders” and “The International Spirt at Work Award.” I hold a BA in Psychology from the University of Colorado, and an MA in Health Education from JFK University. My background includes certifications in Conflict Resolution and as an Emotional Intelligence Coach through Six Seconds at the ACC level. I have advanced skills interpreting various industry-recognized assessment instruments including Six Seconds Emotional Intelligence tests for leaders and organizations, DiSC, Enneagram, Gallup Strengthsfinder, The TKI Conflict Assessment, and numerous 360 feedback assessments. I have trained extensively with the program “Crucial Conversations.” For the past five years, I have taught programs on social justice and race identity for both healthcare and within Shambhala, a global Tibetan Buddhist organization. In this episode, I speak with Sheila about her lifelong work of working with clients with shame. She explained that she got interested in this subject from her experience as a child and being shy, but overcoming it by becoming a children's magician and performing. She explained how she trained in a number of approaches such as Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, Drama Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, AEPD, Accelerated Experiential-Dynamic Psychotherapy, Hakomi and others, but wasn't finding a particular approach really addressing shame. She discussed how she helps clients to understand that shame has an evolutionary purpose, both in protecting us when we are young, but also helping us to evolve in the present, using it as a signal the client to set boundaries, make changes, and take risks to be more of their authentic self. Sheila talked about how shame is evolutionary by subduing an anger response towards a parent, because it might not be safe, or threaten the connection with parents. She talks about the continuum of shame, which goes from stage fright or imposter syndrome, to never feeling good enough, having a lot of shoulds and perfectionism, and all the way to experiences of humiliation. She discussed how PolyVagal Theory was a great addition to the puzzle, where she was able to have language and a biological explanation for the freeze or shut down that happens for someone when shame comes up. Sheila discussed noticing it in the moment, in the session, when the interpersonal bridge breaks, and helping clients to see the shame, and how it shifts their nervous system. She talked about working with the inner critic, the parent who might have been the critic, using parts work and drama therapy to help clients replay those experiences and becoming the person that could be the hero and protect and save their younger parts. Sheila discussed how helping clients to use mindfulness to notice when the shame comes up, sitting with it, and using compassion for themselves, leads them to be able to be open, rather than shutting down. Sheila Rubin, LMFT, RDT/BCT is a marriage and family therapist and a leading authority on Healing Shame. She developed the Healing Shame Therapy work over the last two decades and is the co-director, with Bret Lyon, of the Center for Healing Shame. in Berkeley, California. Sheila has delivered talks, presentations and workshops across the country and around the world, at conferences from Canada to Romania. She is a Board Certified Trainer through NADTA and past adjunct faculty for the CIIS Drama Therapy Program and JFK University's Somatic Psychology Department. Sheila's expertise, teaching, and writing contributions have been featured in numerous publications, including seven books. Her writings on shame include the chapter “Women, Food and Feelings: Drama Therapy with Women Who Have Eating Disorders” in the book The Creative Therapies and Eating Disorders, the chapter “Almost Magic: Working with the Shame that Underlies Depression: Using Drama Therapy in the Imaginal Realm” in the book The Use of Creative Therapies in Treating Depression, and the chapter “Unpacking Shame and Healthy Shame: Therapy on the Phone or Internet” in Combining the Creative Therapies with Technology: Using Social Media and Online Counseling to Treat Clients (all books edited by Stephanie L. Brooke). Sheila offers therapy through her private practice in Berkeley and online via Zoom. She also provides consultations to therapists via Skype and leads workshops in Berkeley, internationally, and online. This is the first part in a series of episodes exploring the historical roots of California Institute of Integral Studies and its foundations in Integral Yoga as brought to California in the 1950's by Haridas Chaudhuri. In this episode we speak with Bahman Shirazi, who recounts the early history of Haridas Chaudhuri coming to the west, and the academic and cultural conditions which lead to what became CIIS. Bahman speaks about his dissertation completed in EWP in the 1980's which develops Haridas Chaudhuri's vision of Integral Psychology, asking what is the role of personality in spiritual development. In 1960, University of Illinois professor Leo Koch wrote a public letter condoning premarital sex. He was fired. Four years later, a professor named Revilo Oliver made white supremacist remarks and claimed there was a massive communist conspiracy. He kept his job. Matthew Ehrlich revisits the Koch and Oliver cases to look at free speech, the legacy of the 1960s, and debates over sex and politics on campus. The different treatment of the two men marked a fundamental shift in the understanding of academic freedom. Their cases also embodied the stark divide over beliefs and values--a divide that remains today. Ehrlich delves into the issues behind these academic controversies and places the events in the context of a time rarely associated with dissent but in fact a harbinger of the social and political upheavals to come. An enlightening and entertaining history, Dangerous Ideas on Campus: Sex, Conspiracy, and Academic Freedom in the Age of JFK (University of Illinois Press) illuminates how the university became a battleground for debating America's hot-button issues. Matthew C. Ehrlich is a professor emeritus of journalism at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His books include Kansas City vs. Oakland: The Bitter Sports Rivalry That Defined an Era and Radio Utopia: Postwar Audio Documentary in the Public Interest, winner of the James W. Tankard Book Award. “Consciousness doesn't let wonderful things be marginalized.”The energy of intimacy is a powerful way to connect deeper with life. In turn, a quest for intimacy can transform your relationship with everything including yourself, your partner, your work, and the world. I met this episode's guest at a retreat for people seeking greater levels of intimacy with themselves and their significant others. Stuart Sovatsky was a guest speaker and he blew my mind. When he spoke, EVERYONE listened to his every word. Stuart's career has spanned over 4 decades. His experience and wisdom in the relationship, intimacy, and erotic art space makes me want to bow. He's been a marriage counselor for 44 years and was the first choice to co-direct Ram Dass's prison ashram, and first in the US to bring yoga to incarcerated youth and the homeless mentally-ill in the 1970s. He's served at the office of the Dalai Lama and has taught spiritual practices and modalities across the world. He's the author of multiple books including Advanced Spiritual Intimacy and Words From The Soul. He's practiced kundalini yoga for 24 years and is the director of two psychotherapy clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area. He teaches at JFK University and the California Institute of Integral Studies. “It's very grounding to take the mundane aspects of life and not be bored by them.” The way Stuart moves through life is so inspiring because he instills the concept of devotion and tantra at the core of everything. Stuart meets every person and treats every experience as if God is inside, which means his appreciation and reverence for life is far beyond what most people know is possible. In this episode, Stuart and I explore: What is devotional love?Tackling polarity with shared human experiences. The intense power of eye gazing as a devotional practice. Defining tantra. The simplest secret for letting love in. Balancing emotions through alternate nostril breathing.Experiencing the power of reverence. Stay grounded by appreciating yourself. Tune in for a beautiful conversation about cultivating a profound reverence for life. It's time to discover the power of finding a level of depth and potency in the everyday moments.“The best grounding is you appreciating yourself.” Summary/ Call to Action: We thrive on your feedback, so if you've enjoyed this show, please rate us and leave us a review. In the late 1970's, Dr. Helen Wambach was a pioneer in past life regression. A clinical psychologist teaching at JFK University, she was seeing Vietnam veterans who recalled previous lifetimes under hypnosis. She designed a series of tests to avoid bias in these sessions, doing them in groups and having the groups do four two hour sessions. Each group answered a questionnaire afterwards. The same technique used by Universities to report drug efficacy. Only in her questions she focused on things that weren't in the zeitgeist, weren't things on TV or in books - the kinds of cloth used for clothing, the kind of cutlery used for dining, the kinds of materials used for construction and the weather patterns of that region that people were recalling. She let them choose the time period, and gave them a series of possible areas to observe. Her results are mirrored in the work of Michael Newton and the Newton Institute. I've filmed 100 sessions and the results are the same - in my sampling half were not under hypnosis ("Architecture of the Afterlife" book) and the rest were. ("Flipside" "It's a Wonderful Afterlife" part one and two) and "Hacking the Afterlife." This is an 80 minute lecture followed by an 80 minute past life regressions. She suggests one write down the results and then do the research - much easier to do today than back them. I present this as an homage to her and her work. Her books are "Reliving Past Lives" (Bantam 1978) and "Life Before Life" Bantam 1979. This lecture was recorded in Chicago and forwarded to me on reel to reel. I recommend people find their own hypnotherapist, I recommend those trained by the Newton Institute as I've filmed many. Enjoy.

Today I’m talking with Steve Hoskinson. Steve is the founder of Organic Intelligence® (OI) and the nonprofit Organic Intelligence Outreach Institute. OI’s Human Empowerment And Resiliency Training (HEARTraining®) is an international personal and professional development training program using OI’s strengths-based, trauma-safe approach for resiliency. As you’ll hear in our conversation, The Organic Intelligence® (OI) clinical protocol suggests that, from a systems perspective, what’s wrong with therapy is the focus on what’s wrong — including the focus on trauma. Organic Intelligence brings a necessary shift in perspective from pathology and trauma to the proven methods drawn from the wisdom of mindfulness and the science of self-organization. OI teaches how healing happens from the nervous system up and makes it possible to imagine freedom from suffering. Freedom from suffering becomes freedom for living an authentic, vibrant life in the here-and-now. Steve has trained thousands of trauma therapists, health professionals, mindfulness experts, and teachers. He presents at conferences worldwide, is Adjunct Faculty for JFK University’s Somatic Psychology program, a founding member of the Northern California Society for Integrative Mental Health and the International Transformational Resilience Coalition. You can find out more about Steve’s work and Organic Intelligence at www.organicintelligence.org Liberated Being is at www. liberatedbeing.community, and on Instagram we are @liberatedbeing. Join the artist/scientist and elite lucid dreamer Fariba Bogzaran in a rigorous and heartwarming exploration of the wonders of the nocturnal mind. Dr. Bogzaran shares her unique clinical work with dreaming, and the importance of “unfolding” instead of interpreting our dreams. “Dreaming is the art of the mind,” she asserts, and working properly with a single dream as a dream artist can take up to a year as we examine it from multiple angles. How do we identify the “big dreams,” and which dreams can we ignore? Why is dream journaling so important? Fariba describes Integral Dreaming and the power of Integral Dream Practice. Where do synchronicities and flow states fit in, and what is the difference between reflexive and reflective approaches to dreams? Where does bodywork, and “felt sense” come into play? Can we let our body interpret/unfold our dreams? Fariba discusses why motivation is so important in lucid dreaming, and how we are each “projects in the making.” What is epistemic uncertainty, and how can we enter the “zone” of life with a deeper understanding of will and Will. Fariba shares a number of personal reflections about life, death, dreams, and everything in between. Discover why she is one of the treasured voices in the dream world, and a major contributor to the art and science of lucid dreaming.Fariba Bogzaran, Ph.D., scientist/artist, founded the first graduate dream studies certificate program at JFK University in Berkeley (1996), where she taught for over twenty years. She has taught lucid dreaming since 1984 and was part of the team at the Stanford Sleep Laboratory in late 1980's exploring the science of lucid dreaming. She conducted the first quantitative research on the transpersonal experiences in lucid dreaming; Experiencing the Divine in Lucid Dream State (1989). Among many of her publications are two major co-authored academic books on dreams: Extraordinary Dreams and How to Work with Them (2002) and Integral Dreaming: A Holistic Approach to Dreams (2012), both published by the State University of New York Press. Among her recent art publications she addresses arts and exploration of consciousness in a book called: Gordon Onslow Ford: A Man on the Green Island (2019 ).

Radical Transformational Leadership: What does this imply? Guest Speakers: Barbara Clifton Zarate and Megan JosephWe Are The Ones We Have Been Waiting ForWe invite you to a discussion with Barbara Clifton Zarate and Megan Joseph. They discuss how to break patterns in philanthropy. They point out: it may be hard, but it is not impossible. We can learn to think differently-- we are in a place of possibilities right now. Right now, we have an invitation, an invitation on this planet to transform. Our work must be based on principles and values, on ethical leadership, on effective and responsive philanthropy, on challenging the current paradigm and creating a new one. What we measure we will move. How do we shift counting widgets, to paying attention to indicators related to outcomes and equitable and enduring impacts – to see whether the needle is moving, whether lives are better off, our water is cleaner, our earth is protected, and so on.What can we do differently in philanthropy?Advance Equity and Inclusion and Make Equity a Through-line in All InvestmentsInvest in Effective Collaboration and ethical leadership developmentStrengthen Nonprofit and Community EcosystemsSupport Movement EcosystemsListen deeply, invite conversations, and learn from grantees, members of the community and diverse experts; and simultaneously shaft the disempowering social and cultural narratives.More than grant dollars…Leverage assets such as knowledge, connections, reputation, access, influence, and the freedom to take on difficult or controversial issues to give beyond dollars.Barbara Clifton Zarate and Megan Joseph invite us to reflect on the issues we are experiencing today, from a global pandemic, to the impacts of climate change to civil unrest and demand for racial justice. These are issues caused by human and systemic patterns that are hundreds of years old. Generations have been fighting to change these patterns and build more just and sustainable systems. And it is the shoulders of these generations that today’s movements stand on– that give us the openings, the shifts in consciousness, the courage to dismantle what is not working; and at the same time, generate new effective alternatives in today’s context. Philanthropy plays a key role in generating and sustaining deep systemic transformation, and they have a responsibility to meet this moment with courage, innovation and strategic action.Guest: Barbara Clifton Zarate’s academic and professional background is in public health and philanthropy. She has dedicated the last three decades of her career to addressing the inequities and disparities that so many are negatively impacted by, and transform the systems that perpetuate them. She championed initiatives to address poverty, health access, education equity, and grassroots community advocacy and leadership development. She has worked on issues of basic human needs, such as access to food, housing, and water. Barbara stands in solidarity with Indigenous Water Protectors across the globe in opposition to the extraction of fossil fuels and the protection of our sacred water and Mother Earth. She is a mother and grandmother. Barbara stands in solidarity with those calling for justice and for the systemic reforms necessary to end structural racism.Currently, Barbara Clifton Zarate works as the Director for Economic Opportunity at the Marin Community Foundation in Marin County, California in the United States. On Episode 40 I am welcoming back Elizabeth Krasnoff (she is on my Episode 2 of Shattered Conception) I thought it would be helpful to many listeners to hear Elizabeth and I discuss how incorporating sound, sound frequencies and music can soothe our bodies, our minds, our spirits/souls, and our emotions during these unprecedented times of COVID interrupting our daily lives and daily routines. This is such an important topic for myriad reasons - however especially for those with a trauma history, or people who have overactive nervous systems, and for those of us who are highly sensitive individuals - humans in general do not like uncertainty - the human mind needs order and a sense of safety in our daily life. Elizabeth connects how FEAR releases hormones and neurotransmitters that significantly impact brain waves! Elizabeth’s main passions of music, healing and consciousness complemented and co-mingled in 2016 with the start of her private practice Sound Medicine. She has trained and immersed herself in the Biosound Healing™ methodology, a configuration of a vibrating sound bed, meditation, music, video and Heartmath®, and combines this with the other skill sets in her practice to help clients deal with stress using sound and biofeedback. In 2018, Elizabeth was published in the World Futures Journal and twice in the Society for Consciousness Studies newsletter. She presents on sound and consciousness at venues such as the Yale Divinity School with Deepak Chopra, The Graduate Institute, CIIS, CIHS, the Academy of Intuition, the Globe Sound Healing Conference and lastly JFK University, where she now teaches the annual Sound Healing class in the Expressive Arts Program. “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” - Carl Gustav Jung Did you know that your dreams can speak? This is the first of our Jungian Psychology series with Kate Donohue and Chandini Harlalka. In this episode we explore our shadow selves and how dreams and art bring out our unconscious in ways that are not doctored. Jungian Psychology or analytical psychology founded by Carl Jung (pronounced "Yung") in the 1920s is an emperical science in Psychotherapy that has its roots in science-based rationalist philosophy, but integrates ancient and esoteric practices like metaphysics, universal consciousness and astrology. Over time, this study has become popular and more of an art as it integrates intuition with core concepts of psychology. Kate Donohue is a stalwart with >33 years in Counseling Psychology and expressive arts therapy where she takes a Jungian oriented approach. She has been teaching for >30 years, at such institutions as California Institute of Integral Studies, Institute for Transpersonal Psychology, JFK University and the San Francisco C.G. Jung Institute. Kate is also a cofounder of the International Expressive Arts Therapy Association. Her work as an expressive arts therapist stems from her own deep and abiding passion for the arts. Kate is involved in visual arts and dance, having spent 18 years studying indigenous and ethnic dance forms, in particular West African and Afro-Cuban Dance. Her visual arts work in painting and drawing has helped her in understanding the sacred feminine and understand her own inner terrain. Chandini Harlalka is a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist and a Psychodrama Director. Her work is rooted in experiential methodology and Eastern contemplative traditions. Chandini is committed to a path of self-inquiry and through her work, Chandini aims to disrupt habitual patterns of behaviour by challenging perception that lock us into cycles of dissatisfaction. Her work combines the use of fine arts, authentic movement, drama, sand-play and other experiential forms to create a representation of thoughts and feelings. Her work with dream analysis and Jungian concepts helps one to explore and engage deeper with indigenous concepts of symbolism, myths & rituals and to retrieve lost meaning in modern day living. Her workshops on “Rangoli Meditations”, “Cosmic Dance of Shiva and Shakti - A divine union and the dissolution of duality”, “The Unfolding Lotus”, “Hiranyagarbh” (The Golden Womb) have been experiential expressive arts workshops, working with Eastern concepts, and take you through a spiritual experience of healing and the divinity of ‘Self'.

The higher ed sector has been relatively immune (or perhaps resistant?) to change since its inception, but in the past 10-15 years, and especially since the Great Recession, multiple things have changed, forcing changes on it. We now are seeing market forces unleashed, including consolidation, mergers/acquisitions, and closures as we’ve rarely seen before (and not in my lifetime). Understanding Higher Ed’s Situation To put what is happening in higher ed in perspective, we examine the higher ed marketplace through the lens of the product lifecycle (PLC). This is a tool marketing applies to products, but it also is relevant when examining market segments or industries. The PLC is made up of four stages: introduction, growth, maturity, and decline. The introduction stage is characterized by the organization building brand awareness; The growth stage is characterized by strong growth, and the organization building brand preference and increasing market share; The maturity stage is characterized by strong growth diminishing as “competition” rise and competitors offer similar “products.” This results in multiple possible marketing strategies including cutting prices, rethinking positioning and branding, and market consolidation; and The decline stage is characterized by sales significantly declining or having declined. In many cases, the product (or business) goes out of business or, as a last result, finds an acquirer (merger or acquisition). Higher ed finds itself in the maturity to declining stages as characterized by declining enrollments, lack of differentiation in the higher ed marketplace, and an increase in market consolidation (M&A activity) and/or college closings. There are many reasons why higher ed finds itself in this situation. First, higher ed enrollment has decreased for a myriad of factors, not the least of which is changing demographics, i.e., the numbers of the “traditional” college age student has decreased. Compounding this decrease, higher ed is becoming perceived as elitist, and many cannot afford its cost and/or the resultant student debt. In other words, institutions are competing for a shrinking pool of students, and it costs more for an education that some feel isn’t worth the money spent or debt incurred. Second, there is an overabundance of education institutions – too many colleges and universities, and, with rare exceptions, they are offering the same types of programs, e.g., how many MBA programs do we need??? This has resulted in significant economic pressure on those small- to medium-sized colleges and universities who have a relatively small (or no) endowment. This pressure is compounded by cost curves that have been carved into stone over the last several decades. This is played out by larger institutions undercutting smaller institutions on price. For example, the president of the University of Virginia recently announced that tuition will be free for families earning less than $80,000 a year, and if they earn less than $30,000 a year, they will get room and board. In another example, New York University is not charging their medical school students any tuition. Both of these institutions have large endowments to be able to do this, but how can the small- to mid-sized institutions compete? Lastly, there is pressure for the nonprofit higher ed sector to figure out what to do about the out-of-favor for-profit institutions. These three reasons, aside from the fact that there are market dynamics at play – there is more supply than demand – are driving many of the changes we’re seeing right now in higher ed. Mature and Declining Markets Give Rise to M&A Activity Some smaller colleges and universities under financial stress are looking for ways to solve their problems, and one way is merging with or being merged into another institution. The for-profit sector is a great example of where there has been significant M&A activity, e.g., Purdue and Kaplan forming Purdue Global, Strayer acquiring Capella, etc., as for-profits figure out their future when nonprofits are clearly in favor (and for-profits are clearly out-of-favor). This not completely changed, even with the change in administration. Mergers aren’t the only solution for this problem. Many for-profits are attempting the transition to nonprofit status, e.g., Grand Canyon University and University of Phoenix. However, this isn't always the easiest thing to do because of the regulatory permissions required from the Dept of Education and the institution’s accreditation body. Additionally, it doesn't solve their perception problems, at least immediately. Multiple Reasons for M&A Activity There are multiple reasons for increased M&A activity in the higher ed sector besides market forces at work, and we need to look at the reasons why M&A activity occurs. Basically, there are three main reasons: New markets / customers New technologies Gain efficiencies in operations National University System is a good example of this – they’re on a buying spree and for all the right reasons. The National University System, a not-for-profit, currently has three nonprofit institutions under its umbrella: National University, the original mothership; JFK University in northern California, and the City University of Seattle, but over the past year, it has acquired Patten University for its technology and Northcentral University for its students and programs. M&A for New Technologies. In its acquisition of Patten University, NU acquired one of the best LMS systems in the marketplace. The system, which was called University Now, has been renamed Flex Course, and NU has adapted it for their own use. As part of the acquisition, National also acquired Patten’s courses which were heavily competency-based. This is also a good advantage in that they have been able to teach out the Patten programs and integrate the learnings into their current undergraduate programs. One thing that was critical in the acquisition was the ability to modify the LMS to ensure NU was able to continue to satisfy Title IV funding requirements which are driven by Carnegie units. Again, due diligence was critical in this respect. The technology was relatively new, and therefore it was easier to adapt it to satisfy Title IV funding requirements when doing CBE. Ultimately, NU has great hopes that this acquisition will help them to transform the online learning experience at all its universities. In other words, National did a great job in completing its due diligence. M&A as a Growth Strategy. There are two ways that institution grow. One is through organic growth, i.e., you decide you will move into the online sector and you build your program from scratch. Many institutions have done this, and the most recent (and possibly the most famous) of these is the announced online undergraduate program at the University of Pennsylvania, the first of the Ivy League institutions to go online with a program. The second strategy is acquisition, which is how the National University System is expanding their doctoral offerings. NU acquired Northcentral University (pending appropriate WSCUC and DOE approvals), an online for-profit university that offers mostly graduate education programs at the master and doctoral levels. This fills a gap that NU had at the doctoral level and adds to its ability to offer online and blended courses. National is already predominantly online – 51 percent of its students are in synchronous or asynchronous online programs – but its acquisition of Northcentral was critical in three ways. First, Northcentral is completely online and has 24 programs, the majority of which are doctoral, an area NU wanted to expand its offerings. Second, the Northcentral faculty are high quality and located in nearly all of the 50 states. The model that they use is one-on-one similar to the Oxford Tutorial Model, which having your faculty are distributed across the country is an advantage when using this pedagogy. Lastly, National acquires a pretty efficient OPM support back-office. As far as the culture goes, NU expects they will get some real experience bringing the for-profit Northcentral University into the NU System and converting it to a not-for-profit. National’s acquisitions have been very strategic in nature – they have looked at multiple opportunities and walked away from many. With these two, they’ve made good choices in line with their overall strategic plan and done the due diligence to ensure they are picking the right horse. Remember that Culture Issue We Had… Culture is critical when considering a merger. Years ago, when HP acquired Compaq, it was the culture differences that most impacted the success (or lack thereof) of the merger. The Purdue Global situation is a good example of the challenges merger entities can face. Purdue “bought” Kaplan, i.e., Purdue got the franchise of the online courseware from the Kaplan organization, while Kaplan retained the back-office processing and support, and the OPM. Kaplan’s portion of the entity, still for-profit, is being paid for by the profits they're going to make, while the courses are offered through the not-for-profit Purdue Global. Many consider the merger between Purdue, a Tier 1 research university with a very high reputation and traditional faculty, and Kaplan, a good institution in its own right but a for-profit online, a very gutsy move – especially when one considers the faculty culture aspects. Why is there resistance to this change is relatively simple to understand. Culture. The integration of cultures is never easy. Sometimes, when two cultures come together as Purdue and Kaplan are attempting to do, they merge like oil and water. And that's one of the most important things that folks doing mergers and acquisitions must think about – how the cultures align – because more than anything else, it is culture that can destroy a merger and eliminate the efficiencies that the merger is designed to take advantage of. Take for instance the merger of Kaplan and Purdue. Kaplan, a for-profit, and Purdue, a R1 university, are very different cultures, especially when it comes to faculty. Regardless of the high quality of Kaplan, an institution which has stayed pretty much out of trouble in terms of the scrutiny of the for-profit community, Kaplan’s online degree programs themselves are a challenge to Purdue’s “in classroom” campus programs that a R1 institutions are experienced in providing. Faculty, and especially traditional, research faculty, generally tend not to like a lot of change, nor are they wild about online education. And we can just imagine what a traditional, research faculty such as Purdue’s felt about merging with a for-profit online institution. From all reports, the faculty was furious when the merger was first announced – their “brand” was being diluted by this incorporated new global entity called Purdue Global that included a for-profit institution. The merger has progressed, and faculty and administration appear to have come to a truce, at least for now. That said, Purdue is spending significantly to market Purdue Global – it is in almost every market with TV and radio ads – while trying to keep marketing positioning separate between Purdue and Purdue Global. It has yet to be seen as to whether they are able to keep their faculty happy about it or the branding separate, but that’s a whole different kettle of fish. The Future of the For-Profit Sector The for-profit sector is not going to disappear, as much as much of higher ed would like it to. However, there are market forces at play here too, and the for-profit sector may morph its way towards a higher concentration of those who survived to be distributors of OPM or programs. An example of this is MOOCs. When you look at several of the MOOC organizations, e.g., Udacity, EDX, etc., these organizations are not just providing learning experiences, they are turning into distributors of traditional degree programs, including even graduate programs for R1 universities. This, plus being obvious merger targets, will continue the upheaval in this sector. We believe that we will see more mergers and less of the organic growth from for-profits, including for-profits becoming part of nonprofits similar to what is happened with Purdue Global, as well as mergers to share back office services. One example of this is TCS Education System, who provides back-office services for a number of institutions. These types of mergers could have a major impact in the online space, especially for small to medium-sized institutions, as it is almost impossible for them to establish the infrastructure to do an effective job in online education – the only way for them to get and/or stay competitive in the online space is to “outsource” back-office functionality. Federal Funding and Accreditation There are also a number of changes in regulatory and accreditation factors between Obama and the Trump administrations that are impacting higher ed. Federal Funding. In a recent talk given by Secretary DeVos, her current position is focused not on the change in the standards but rather more on making Title IV funds available for a broader variety of learning experiences. She conveyed a pretty strong feeling that we should not be committing all postsecondary education funding to what we now call hire traditional higher ed, but to improve the flow of federal funds to retraining programs. Accreditation. There are not a lot of people who believe that we will move dramatically away from the kind of accreditation process we currently have for a myriad of reasons, despite the upcoming Neg Reg process which begins in early 2019 focusing on accreditation and innovation. Big changes from in accreditation will need to include a willingness to think in competency-based terms. This will require a major shift away from the strict Carnegie method of determining learning, to more of a competency-based approach to assessing learning outcomes. Simply put, it is much more important to know that people are learning and being able to demonstrate learning outcomes than it is to demonstrate how long they sat in a seat. However, changing this mindset will be very challenging as it has been this way for well over 100 years. Additionally, those with marketing backgrounds know that accreditation is the university system's greatest barrier to entry. It is important that universities meet a quality level, but the current system requires institutions develop prima facie evidence of quality, and many potential competitors get frustrated before they get accredited. This could be one reason why the accreditation system as we currently know it does not (and will not) change. Three Things University Presidents Should Consider Before Merger If you are considering merging with another institution, there are three things you should consider. First, culture. You must examine the cultures of the two organizations to ensure that they are mergeable, i.e., that the two cultures are not contrary to one another. There are clear differences between for-profit and not-for-profit cultures, and you must “test the water” and see just how much of a business the for-profit institution sees themselves as vs. it being a learning institution. Second, regardless as to whether it is a for-profit or not-for-profit entity, does the acquired institution have the programs, faculty and administrative support that is consistent and that will integrate effectively with your own. This is critical but especially critical with respect to faculty. Faculty generates and own the content, and it is essential you have a group who can drive the learning experience for students. That's not something that you can import easily – you must make sure that it fits your own model about how it's going to work. Thirdly, you have to look at the institution as a business. You (obviously) don’t want to take on something that is so broken that it cannot be fixed no matter how hard you try. For example, you have to ask yourself, are they hopelessly lost as a business model? Are their programs of interest to the marketplace? One of the biggest challenges institutions are having today is pruning and culling their programs, and leaders must have the courage to look faculty in the eye and say, “by the way, that course is costing us lots of money, and you only have five people in it. We know you may like it, but we can't continue to teach a course that students don't want.” That can be a really tough academic decision, but one that must be made. Wrapping Up We believe that the disruption going on in higher ed has just started and that surviving and thriving in the higher ed space will take intense focus to fine tune the systems, processes, and cost structure if institutions are going to compete and survive. Competition for the adult student has heated up dramatically. Whether we like it or not, this is not only because more traditional institutions have decided to get into the market, but also because multiple institutions are now competing on price, including those that have state subsidies federal subsidies, and/or have large endowments. This can make it very difficult for smaller institutions to compete against as it allows larger institutions to “give away” of their offerings. Bullet Points: The higher ed sector has been relatively immune (or perhaps resistant?) to change since its inception, but in the past 10-15 years, and especially since the Great Recession, multiple things have changed, forcing changes on it. We now are seeing market forces unleashed, including consolidation, mergers/acquisitions, and closures as we’ve rarely seen before (and not in my lifetime). Higher ed finds itself in the maturity to declining stages of the product lifecycle as characterized by declining enrollments, lack of differentiation in the higher ed marketplace, and an increase in market consolidation (M&A activity) and/or college closings. Some smaller colleges and universities under financial stress are looking for ways to solve their problems, and one way is merging with or being merged into another institution. There are multiple reasons for increased M&A activity in the higher ed sector besides market forces at work, and we need to look at the reasons why M&A activity occurs. Basically, there are three main reasons: New markets/customers, new technologies, or gains in efficiencies in operations. Culture is critical when considering a merger, but the integration of cultures is never easy. We believe that we will see more mergers and less of the organic growth from for-profits, including for-profits becoming part of nonprofits. The Ed Department under Secretary DeVos believes it should not be committing all postsecondary education funding to what we now call hire traditional higher ed, but to improve the flow of federal funds to retraining programs. Social justice. Perhaps this is something you’ve heard about, but are not entirely sure what it entails. Conversely, maybe it’s something you’ve been focusing your entire work and life around for years! This installment of John F. Kennedy University’s Thursday Soapbox will be an evening of synthesis, pertinent to anyone interested in or already involved in social justice-oriented work and ways of being. Together, we will explore how our philanthropic efforts can be geared toward more equitably distributing resources within the community. Your speakers for the evening are movers and shakers at JFK University whose work exemplifies a range of social justice-oriented programming. Diversity and Inclusion Officer Benisa Berry and Sanford Institute of Philanthropy Director Solomon Belette will demystify the concept and equip us with its basic tenets. Additionally, input from local representatives will illustrate the types of work already occurring in the community. Finally, resources available through the university for furthering and fortifying both new and existing initiatives will be highlighted. “This is an opportunity to clarify the meaning and dimensions of social justice,” says Dr. Berry. “It is also an interaction to get feedback from the community to see what their interests are and how we might get more coordinated with them.” Whether you’re in search of resources, community, or clarification, our speakers are at your service. See you there!
We all desire a guide. We all desire an all-knowing, supremely intelligent source of ultimate wisdom that will help us move assuredly through our lives. But where is this source? Is it on top of mountain somewhere? Is it some elusive stranger we long to meet someday? According to Meenal Chaudhari, professor of body-oriented psychotherapy at John F. Kennedy University, it is deep within our bodies and available to us at all times. “Body-wisdom is the intelligence and spirit that permeates every cell and extends out of the physical body as well.” In this experiential edition of JFK University’s Thursday Soapbox, it is this intelligence that Chaudhari invites us to explore. How can we access our body’s wisdom? “The process,” Chaudhari explains, “requires getting quiet and going within, putting your attention inside into the deeper layers of yourself.” With practice, she says, it gets easier. The more we cultivate the ability to tap into our body’s deep inner wisdom, the more this resource will become readily available to us. Curious? Join us for a presentation and guided visualizations into the body’s deeper pathways, where new routes toward self growth might just be waiting.
“When we meet someone, as human beings we are trained to put them in boxes,” explains Ora Prochovnick, JD, Professor of Law at John F. Kennedy University, “but this is not necessarily healthy anymore.” Literal boxes, such as the ones we must check off when filling out personal forms and paperwork, often require a person to identify themselves with one of two traditional gender markers, male or female. Mental boxes also exist, in terms of the assumptions we make about a person upon meeting them. While one instance falls in the legal realm and the other in the social sphere, both sets of boxes affect the way people are treated and tend to have a personal impact. In this exciting edition of JFK University’s Thursday Soapbox, Prochovnick and Professor Robbin Rasbury, PsyD, will join forces to offer timely considerations of gender identity through a holistic lens. This talk will offer crucial, compassionate, and practical insight into aligning both our policies and ourselves with the reality of the gender spectrum. Whether you’re concerned or simply curious, join us for this unique, collaborative presentation and see what it’s all about!
Annie Mattingley, author of The After Death Chronicles and an alumni of the Consciousness Studies program at JFK University, has long been fascinated by consciousness. And yet, the possibility of communicating with the dead was not an idea that was ever on her radar. It is, of course, the subject of her new book, but she didn’t choose it. The subject, Mattingley explains, chose her. It happened while she was grieving the loss of her daughter. Out of nowhere, Mattingley began entering into daily, verbal communication with the deceased member of her family. The experience was deeply healing. Then, another incredible thing happened. Mattingley began cautiously talking to her friends about her communication with the afterlife only to discover, much to her surprise, that everyone seemed to have a similar story to share, some of them people she had known for a long time. “I felt like I had come upon this huge secret…I just became fascinated that this was happening and no one’s talking about it. It became something that I wanted to illuminate for our world,” she says. Grief is one of the most difficult things any of us will ever have to deal with. What happens after death is a question that occupies everyone’s mind. But what if you could communicate with your dead and they said, “I’m okay?” How could this change everything? Join us at the Thursday Soapbox to find out!

Let’s face it—no one has ever heard the term dyslexia and felt warm and fuzzy about it. Instead, the term conjures thoughts of deficiency, difficulty, and a fate of academic underachievement. But Julie Cosenza, academic counselor at JFK University, aims to reconstruct limiting beliefs such as these surrounding learning disabilities. With Cosenza at the helm, Thursday’s Soapbox will serve as an exciting step toward spinning stale disability narratives into constructive new outlooks. While writing her dissertation in Critical Communication Pedagogy, Cosenza noticed how dyslexia was only ever described in terms of deficiency—the inability to do this or that. She wondered, was it possible to define dyslexia without using such language? As opposed to viewing the condition as a hindrance to education, Cosenza asks, “What if we viewed dyslexia simply its own way of knowing? What might we learn about the positive aspects it has to offer higher education? What possibilities for new knowledge production might we discover?” When it comes to thinking about ability in general, these questions drive a powerful shift in perspective applicable within the sphere of higher education and beyond.

OUR BODIES AND EARTH: ON WHY NATURE IS OUR PRIMARY RELATIONSHIP A conversation about our bodies as aspects of Earth and nature as a human's primary relationship. On the need- and the luxury!- of attuning our bodies' ecosystems to the wakeful intelligence of our natural world and romancing our inner and outer nature as a way of self-knowing. Host Stefana Serafina speaks to Jamie McHugh, an embodiment educator who has been on faculty at the Tamalpa Institute and JFK University for over 25 years. A somatic therapist and coach, Jamie is also the creator of Somatic Expression, a method for practicing the art of conscious relationship between one's own body and the living landscape. THIS EPISODE'S WISDOM QUOTES "Once we plug into the larger body of the Earth, we have more possibilities and choices for the fullness of our being to emerge. So in our daily lives, do we have simple little places of green, trees, and water? Where can we go in our immediate environment to settle into ourselves and resonate with the elements? What is essential for those non-linear and magical relationships between human and nature to happen is that we change our internal sense of time as well as our literal sense of time to allow those to happen. The tradition of Sabbath, of unplugging, is very useful here: If we take one day out of seven to unplug and journey into the environment, find a place and hang out there and give ourselves a chunk of time, we can take on the informing of that area. Magic, like earth time, takes time.” "Movement as a healing art is a kind of a hero's journey to shed our conditioning and our experience of being a body in modern culture." "We have to rediscover– How do we play as adults? How to enrich our movement repertoire? How do we allow our psyches and somas to loosen the tethers of who we think we are and allow ourselves to participate in our lives and landscape in a much different way?" To find out more about Jamie's work, visit www.somaticexpression.com For more on Stefana's women's embodiment work, visit www.intuitivedance.org/

Jon Bernie's first awakening experience at the age of sixteen led him to spend many years practicing in the Zen and Theravadan Buddhist traditions, first as a monk in the lineage of Shunryu Suzuki Roshi, and then as an early student of Jack Kornfield's. In the late 1980s, Jon's spiritual trajectory was profoundly altered when he met Jean Klein – master of Advaita Vedanta and Kashmiri Yoga with whom he studied intensively for an extended period. Jon subsequently spent time with H.W.L. Poonja and Robert Adams, both direct disciples of Ramana Maharshi. Jon's spiritual development was also greatly aided by Brother David Steindl-Rast, who, along with Thomas Merton, was one of the first Christian monks to seriously practice in the Zen and Tibetan traditions and has since been instrumental in building interfaith networks worldwide. After Jon met Adyashanti in 2002, his spiritual journey came to fruition, and subsequently Adya asked Jon to teach. In addition to his work as a spiritual teacher, Jon is a certified Zero Balancing practitioner and a teacher of the Alexander Technique in private practice in San Francisco since 1981. Jon's healing work has also been deeply influenced by extensive training in NLP, hypnosis, Self Acceptance Training, cranio-sacral therapy and the Qigong system of Dr. Yu Penxi. In addition to his private practice, Jon has given lectures and workshops for the general public at the Suzuki Method Teacher's Conference, UCSF Medical School, JFK University and the Whole Life Expo. This week on Living with a Suicide host Dawn Harward interviews Madeleine Herrmann. Madeleine Herrmann lost her husband to suicide and is the auther of Partita a Psychological Mystery. Madeleine and Fred defied the age-old hostility between the Germans and the French and married. They lived in California, built two houses, and raised four children. Madeleine pioneered physical fitness classes for women and children in California and graduated from UC Berkeley in 1962 with a master’s degree. Tragically, Fred Herrmann committed suicide in 1969. Madeleine raised their four children on her own and then, in 1983, she went back to college to study Transpersonal Psychology in the master’s program at JFK University in Orinda, CA. She has lived in Taos, New Mexico, since 1992. Partita a Psychological Mystery is a novel exploring the mysteries of human sorrow, love, and music. The story is Madeleine’s fictional exploration of the causes of her husband’s suicide, and presents the view of a woman struggling to find answers for disturbing reality that the man she loved and thought she knew suddenly took his own life. Many readers are moved by the way the tragedy speaks to incomprehensible emotional events in their own lives. http://www.madeleineherrmann.com/ Music: Somewhere Sunny, Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) A production of Septic Radio.
