Ever wondered how the web of youth soccer organizations operates in the U.S.? Tune in as Matt Bernard of US Club Soccer joins us to untangle the intriguing complexities of the system. Together, we scrutinize the unique roles of different entities, from local leagues to national powerhouses like the ECNL and National Premier League. Discover how these organizations affect the competitive youth soccer scene and what the explosion of leagues means for local communities. It's a revealing look into the heart of American soccer, where local decision-making and national affiliations converge. The landscape of youth soccer in America is a tapestry of challenge and opportunity, markedly different from the open pyramid system of English football. We delve into the absence of promotion and relegation in the U.S., examining its influence on club dynamics and the evolution of exclusive leagues that reshape community competition. Balancing the scales of development and competition, we address the financial pressures on clubs and families, the unseen hurdles of long-distance travel for games, and the critical learning curve for coaches in fostering a positive dynamic with referees.Referee abuse is a troubling stain on the beautiful game, and we confront it head-on with candid reflections on how the issue is being tackled—or sometimes ignored—within the soccer community. Through real-life stories and a robust discussion with Matt, we shed light on the urgent need for a national registry to track incidents, the role of State Referee Administrators in resolving such cases, and the strides leagues like ECNL are making in championing a culture of respect. This episode promises insights and solutions, advocating for a supportive, educated environment that protects the integrity and joy of soccer for all involved.

On Episode 125, we continue our interviews on U.S. Soccer governance surrounding the Vice Presidential election with an interview with former candidate Mike Cullina. Cullina is the CEO of US Club Soccer and serves as the Youth Council representative on the U.S. Soccer Board of Directors. Cullina was a candidate for U.S. Soccer Vice President, but decided back on January 13th to withdraw from the race. Still, he appeared on the show to discuss his reasons for getting involved in the race and his work on the board of directors for U.S. Soccer, addressing many questions on several topics that affect the entire umbrella of American soccer. The work that U.S. Soccer has to do in order to grow the game in this country is expansive, and Cullina details some of the many steps they need to take to improve one area of the soccer landscape while working with the numerous member associations so that the game continues to improve in the United States. From referee development and player safety to expanding the resources of our extended national teams, Cullina gives a fascinating interview that is sure to leave everyone with a better understanding of how U.S. Soccer both currently operates and where they can improve operations to keep progress moving forward. We will have our final candidate interview with Dr. Pete Zopfi early next week. We hope to touch on as many topics as we can that are important to fans in an effort to bring you into the governance process. If you have a question for the candidates, submit it on our Google form! The Inside Scoop with Anytime Soccer Training - Discussing Youth Soccer from Around the World
This episode delves into the reality of motivating kids in the world of soccer and how short, focused practice sessions can lead to remarkable results. In a recent Facebook group discussion within our Anytime-Soccer Training community, I shared a fantastic review from one of our users, highlighting the incredible power of visible improvement. As an adult, I've learned that hard work, dedication, and discipline are the keys to success, and we're passing on this wisdom to our kids through deliberate practice. One member shared a success story about their son, who experienced immediate improvements in just 15-20 minutes of practice before training. This led to more playing time, making it clear that results can be a significant motivator for young athletes. But here's the real challenge: how do you inspire an 8-year-old to put in this kind of effort consistently? It's not about bribing them with lollipops or toys; it's about setting clear expectations, understanding your child's unique personality, and finding the right balance. We've introduced a concept called "MEE," or Minimum Extra Effort, which sets a realistic commitment level that your child can handle. As they begin to witness the benefits over time, they'll be the ones pushing for more practice. So, don't be disheartened when you read about kids in other countries practicing differently. We must adapt to our own reality and strike the right balance between support and autonomy as parents. In conclusion, it's not about pushing your child to the limit. It's about creating a routine that suits their lives and continuously improves their skills. They'll realize that they're doing something unique, and that sense of accomplishment is invaluable. I'm Neil Crawford, the founder of Anytime Soccer Training. Visit Anytime-soccer.com to get started. Remember, it's free, and we're here to help you and your kids get better together. #soccer #coronadelsol #highschool #club From Trainlikelegends.com High school soccer is one of the most memorable times of an athlete's career. Playing alongside friends for four years on your home field is an experience unlike any other. Bottom line, the camaraderie established in high school ball is difficult to replicate. Depending on the size of your school, however, the competition may vary. Prestigious private schools and large public schools often have an advantage over small public schools. Private schools will often recruit public school players, and large public schools have a prospective field of thousands to choose from. Club Soccer is somewhat like an all-star team, and the rosters are typically composed of players from multiple high schools. The old adage may not ring true across the board, but more often than not, the best high school players also play club soccer. Typically, club soccer is more competitive than high school. Club teams will often play year-round, so the kids that sign up for it are typically more committed to soccer as their main sport. This fact immediately raises the level of internal competition. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/coachcameron/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/coachcameron/support

Without much soccer news, we wanted to try something lighthearted for this Friday's episode. We're talking all about Alex Morgan's star turn in her 2018 feature film, Alex & Me. We liked it, we swear, but there were some hilarious things in this straight-to-video artistic masterpiece of our time like: cartoonishly evil fathers, posters that come to life, and a goalie who can't keep the ball out of the net because of her pesky allergies. And sure, Alex's acting leaves something to be desired, but the movie was a great time. Watch on Amazon or YouTube to follow along with us! As always, you can reach us at settlethescorepodcast@gmail.com.

Mike opens the show talking about the difficult decision Mitchell had to make. Mike says he is proud of Mitchell for taking his time and doing what he felt was best for him and for handling it 100% on his own. Mitchell wants to focus on his schoolwork. He will play soccer on his high school soccer team. Mitchell acted like an adult and explained the decision to his coach on his own. Mike and Torya discuss how much more time they will have. Mitchell mentioned high school has more practice than the club, but Mike points out that it happens during school hours. Mitch will come home a bit later, but won't have to go out again to another practice. Mike says he is glad he won't be getting home at 10 pm each night. He will miss the parents, coaches and the kids. They then discussed the reasons Mitchell made the decision he did. Mike continues to say he is extremely proud of Mitchell for handling the decision like an adult. Mike discusses the age difference between he and Torya and how it is nobody else's business. He says that no matter what anyone feels about that age difference, it will never affect others. Mike discusses the conflict he personally has with Mitchell's decision. He will miss his friends from the team and the fun times they had. He won't miss the asshole parents on the team. Thankfully, that's a small number of parents. They then discuss how Mitchell got to make this decision in his way. No interference. He took his time.

In episode 97 we talk to Parker about his first marathon and how he went for it and hear about how that plan blew up on him. Parker shares with us what the game plan is for the Chicago Marathon. We have some amazing world class athletes and coaches scheduled over the next few weeks, so make sure you hit subscribe on your favorite podcasting app so you don't miss any of the action. How did you get started running when you were young? 11-12 years old father and sister were training AAU Nationals vs Club Soccer and Hockey Went to Oregon Why did you choose Oregon? I just wanted a scholarship to any school Went to 2008 Trials at Oregon and never saw anyone care about track like that Junior year won State and made US Juniors team and Oregon became a possibility Oregon is a tough environment. You are expected to win Pac-12 and compete at nationals. Did that help you get ready for a professional career? You need to score at the conference meet and get to nationals or hey will find someone who will Made me tough and taught me to get better and be prepared You said when considering Oregon you thought it was a good place for a professional runner. Did you identify early that you wanted to be a professional runner? I never knew what it meant, but yes was what I was working for Towards the end of college, options became real and understood it Often times a 26-year old is still focusing on the track, but you have moved to the marathon. Are you done with the track now? Focusing on the marathon, but not done with track I want to work on track to focusing on things like the 10k What was the worst race experience you ever had? Junior year in Oregon running great 3rd a Pac-12 Went to NCAA's and felt strung out before the race Nationals finished 240th out of 244 What did you learn from that experience? Started working with a sports psychologist Realized I had some allergies issues that lead to panic attacks Why Colorado to live and train? I signed with Sacouny Had Achilles surgery where could not run Was looking for a change of scenery Knew Brad Hudson Brad is best known for his marathon training was CIM your idea or his? Wasn't my idea Was a good idea to get the ball rolling towards i We were planning on running Houston but felt ready earlier During CIM Twitter was blowing up on your race and how you were going for it, can you walk us through that ace? Ran like training: No fear I had no plan to be alone, but they did not come with me I kept telling myself I was going too fast but splits stayed consistent Mile 12 started having a little pain in the calf Mile 18-19 I was still shocked was running so fast and decided to slow down a little Then it hit me the last couple of miles and was passed at mile 23 Finished at 7:00/mile pace The next day what your conversation with the coach like? We knew we were going to run hard and not care what anything else thinks Disappointed because I could have pulled it off, but understood What is the goal for Chicago? Break 2:11 I feel like im in better shape than that right now I want to execute a good race I need a good marathon mark on the boards We recently talked to Aaron Braun about his Chicago, do you ever plan to run together with someone like that? If the 2:05 guys go that fast we could have our own separate race Would love to have a couple Americans break 2:11 Problem is some are more laid back and I am more aggressive How has your training been going to date? Amazing, way better than the lead up to CIM Been working on a video series 35k at 5:12 pace in Boulder workout I am fit enough, just don't want to get hurt or overdue it now What has changed a lot in your workouts now that you are a marathon runner? Fueling has been huge Longer fast runs Gone from 7-day calendar to 10-day calendar with more rest Final Surge 5 questions in under a minute Favorite endurance/running book? - Running with the Buffaloes Current trainers you are wearing? - Sacounty Triump iso 4 Favorite race? - 1/2 marathon Favorite recovery meal or recovery drink? - Smoothie with extra protien Your favorite workout - Long Fast Runs Resources Parker Stinson on Instagram Parker Stinson on Twitter Parker Stinson Endure

Maybe they're not turf wars. Maybe it's just healthy competition. Christian Lavers is fully immersed in the complicated landscape of U.S. youth soccer. He's a technical director with FC Wisconsin and an executive with the ECNL and U.S. Club Soccer. And miraculously, he still sounds optimistic. Even "nice." If you're looking for mud-slinging, you're not going to find it here. Instead, you're going to hear a candid but polite take on why we have multiple national championships and other stuff that those of us who cover youth soccer complain about. He's aware of the travel requirements these days -- "not every game should require a hotel stay or flight," he says. But he sees different organizations filling different legitimate needs. After today’s explanation of the upcoming Guide to Youth Soccer (3:00) and a rant about promotion/relegation (4:15), my guest (12:30) is Doug Wood, executive director of SAY (Soccer Association for Youth). He starts by explaining what SAY does -- mostly recreational soccer through several different entry points, including schools. SAY isn’t the most top-down organization out there. Its leagues and clubs sometimes have diverse approaches. Sounds a little different than the U.S. Soccer mandates, doesn’t it? Along with U.S. Youth Soccer, U.S. Club Soccer, AYSO and USSSA, SAY is part of the Youth Council Technical Working Group, which sprung up in response to those mandates. We talk about whether that’s making a difference (26:00). --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ranting-soccer-dad/support
