The influencer whose vlogs you watch, the celeb whose Instagram stories you follow... these are examples of parasocial relationships. These types of relationships are like no other because they aren't completely one-sided, but they're definitely not balanced either. As our world becomes more virtual and we connect with each other on different social media platforms, parasocial relationships continue to become more important. We need to explore what that means for us as both consumers and creators. My friend Natasha Wadlington joins me as we define what parasocial relationships are, the research that currently exists and the way it manifests itself in our digital culture. I turned 32 in August and I feel like my journey is JUST BEGINNING. Would you believe that at age 27, I thought I missed the boat for success and settled in where I was? Most of the time I didn't think I was good enough. I think it's important to share my story because I used to think there were people that were just meant to be entrepreneurs. You know, people that didn't flunk out of college classes, extroverted party people and definitely not depressed or anxious ones. Definitely not someone like me! I've always wondered about the challenges of marketing when faced with a societal stigma. On this episode, my guest is Argelia Martinez, a Chicago-born and raised managing director for strategic marketing communications firm Hausworth & Co. First, she tells me about her current project, promoting the census to communities that have mistrust of government institutions and how her firm partners with community leaders in order to get more minorities to fill it out. And in the second half of the show, we discuss her work in the legalization of cannabis in Illinois, a substance with a stigma surrounding it that we all know too well.
