Mayra is officially in her G Wagon era, and this week we're spilling all the tea on the emotional car-buying process- from the test drive nerves to the “OMG, it's mine” moment. Plus we need all your electric car hacks because we might be next! Then we're getting real and hyping you up, because if there's one thing we know, it's that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to… clock it, mamas. We're also throwing it back to our childhood, sharing our core memories with our parents and reflecting on how they were just doing the best they could, and of course, we're giving you a juicy Skinnytober update with a few surprises you won't want to miss. SIMONE: A gente tá indo pra Espírito Santo do Pinhal. Eu sou a Mayra Trinca. LIDIA: E eu sou a Lidia Torres.

This week we celebrate Latin American Heritage Month with a look at a horror movie out of Mexico that is very hard to put into words and so we try anyway and sound like complete lunatics. Falling toward the end of the Galindo family film dynasty, Vacation of Terror 2: Diabolical Birthday (Vacaciones de Terror 2: Cumpleaños Diabolico) sees Galindo cousin, Pedro Galindo III with a surprisingly stunning cast of Mexican movie stars. Pedro Fernandez turns up in yet another movie for the Galindo's with his magnificent curly mullet and easy cool. Teen pop star Tatiana shows up to sing her hit single Chicos Chicos as she ages out of the teen pop arena but just a few years prior to her ascent as one of Mexico's biggest children's entertainers. The whole cast is rounded out by a bona fide legend of Mexican film, Joaquin Cordero and I have to wonder if any one of these actors stopped for a moment and pondered what exactly they were doing in this movie because if we were any one of these actors we would be very confused and very concerned. In this very loose sequel to 1989's Vacation of Terror the evil witch-possessed doll somehow escaped its fate of the previous movie and winds up as a prop on a movie studio. With a lot of questions probably best left unanswered, the doll hides under an elaborate birthday cake and transforms into a horrible slimy goblin creature and wreaks havoc on the movie lot as our heroic Julio and bouncy Mayra race against the clock to save the imperiled soul of her sister, Tania, before the sun rises and the slimy witch goblin steals her soul for good. In recognition of National Hispanic Heritage Month 2025, Latina Today Podcast and Hispanic Chamber Cincinnati USA have launched Rooted Leadership / Liderazgo Arraigado, an initiative dedicated to highlighting the narratives that inspire Latino-rooted leadership, accomplishments, legacies, and lived experiences from across the United States. In an inspiring interview, Lorena Mora-Mowry engages in a conversation with Mayra Camarena, a remarkable student who embodies the essence of rooted leadership. Mayra is currently enrolled at Gateway Community & Technical College, where she is pursuing a Nursing certificate. In addition to her academic pursuits, she works as a Patient Care Assistant at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Florence, Kentucky. During the interview, Mayra discusses her upbringing and cultural background, which have shaped her life. In 2020, she commenced her first semester in pre-medicine. Since no family member had previously pursued higher education, she was unfamiliar with scholarship opportunities and solely relied on FAFSA, securing a loan for the remaining expenses. Consequently, Mayra accumulated a debt of $50,000. Tragically, her single mother fell ill and was unable to continue working. In response to her mother's encouragement, Mayra resolved to resume her nursing studies in the fall of 2024, following a three-and-a-half-year hiatus. As the sole financial provider for her household, she must concurrently pursue full-time employment and academic commitments. Gradually, she aspires to acquire a nursing certificate while harboring aspirations of becoming a nurse practitioner, fulfilling her childhood aspiration of becoming a physician. As a member of the Latino community, Mayra advises, “Embrace your identity and heritage. Recognize the sacrifices made by others for your better life. Let this inspire your actions. Engage in activities that resonate with you, share your experiences, and educate others to the best of your abilities. Do not succumb to setbacks, as I did when I had to pause my life for a period. However, I believe that part of what it means to be Latino is to persevere and overcome challenges. Embrace your resilience and return stronger, allowing it to guide your future.” Mayra's narrative exemplifies the indomitable human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity and pursue higher education. It also demonstrates the ability to adapt and make necessary adjustments in the face of challenges. Furthermore, it underscores the profound impact and support that parents can provide during our most arduous moments.
Kerry Cullen drops in, in person, so I smoke a cocktail (and forget to mention that Manhattans contain vermouth). We get to talking about working in books and then writing a book, shocking your writing group, and the best places to write. And then we talk about Mayra by Nicky Gonzalez, another book about a character revisiting their past and finding ghosts. In this Past Life Regression session, my client uncovered a powerful incarnation as Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sisi. Born in 1837, Empress Elisabeth became one of Europe's most captivating figures. Known for her beauty, independence, and tragic destiny, she was both adored and misunderstood. She married Emperor Franz Joseph I at the age of 16 and quickly found herself caught between her free spirit and the strict demands of royal court life.Throughout her reign, Sisi was admired for her intelligence, love of poetry, and deep compassion for the Hungarian people. Yet behind the glamour, she carried profound struggles with depression, loss, and the weight of expectation. Her life ended tragically in 1898 when she was assassinated in Geneva. In this podcast episode, we explore the past life memories of Empress Elisabeth as they come through regression — offering unique insight into her soul's journey and the challenges she faced. If you're fascinated by royalty, history, and reincarnation, this episode will transport you into the heart of a past life filled with details you can cross reference. #pastlifetherapy #karma #souljourney #soulremembrance #pastliferegression #EmpressElisabeth #historicalfigure #royaltyMayra Rath is a Spiritual Hypnotherapist specializing in Past Life Regression Therapy and QHHT Hypnosis. In this week's episode of Booksmart, we're joined by the wonderful Nicky Gonzalez, the author of one of this year's most haunting debuts, Mayra - a novel that brims with tension, longing, and the sticky heat of Florida's swamplands.Set in the sultry, surreal wilds of the Everglades, Nicky's novel dives deep into the complicated terrain of female friendship. The novel explores the intoxicating bond between Ingrid and Mayra - two childhood best friends reunited for a mysterious weekend away that quickly turns unsettling. As the lines between past and present blur, and the house itself becomes a character, the story becomes a slow-burning psychological reckoning with desire, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about the people we once were.In the chat with Soaliha, Nicky discusses how growing up in Hialeah shaped her literary voice and approach to writing, how she captures the sensual strangeness of the Florida landscape, and why the nostalgia of girlhood can be both beautiful and dangerous. If you've ever been haunted by a friendship that shaped you - or intrigued by the idea of a house that seems to breathe with secrets - you'll get a lot out of this episode.
In the aftermath of the devastating Eaton Canyon Fire in Altadena, California, three Pasadena community leaders—Mayra Macedo-Nolan, Pastor Kerwin Manning, and Megan Katerjian—join host Mark Labberton for a sobering and hopeful conversation on what it takes to rebuild homes, neighborhoods, and lives. Together they discuss their personal losses, the long-term trauma facing their neighbors, the racial and economic disparities exposed by disaster, and how the Church is rising to meet these challenges with grit, grace, and faith. Their stories illuminate how a community holds fast when the media leaves, when vultures circle, and when the work is just beginning. This is a conversation about sacred presence, practical resilience, and the enduring witness of faithful service—even in the ashes. Mayra Macedo-Nolan is Executive Director of the Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena Kerwin Manning is Senior Pastor of Pasadena Church Megan Katerjian is CEO of Door of Hope Ministries Helpful Links and Resources Door of Hope Pasadena – Family homelessness intervention and fire assistance program Pasadena Church – Kerwin Manning's congregation and relief center Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena – Mayra Macedo-Nolan's organization supporting pastors and churches Isaiah 61:3 – “Beauty for ashes” verse referenced by Kerwin Andre Crouch – “Soon and Very Soon” – Gospel anthem of hope quoted by Pastor Kerwin Show Notes CCC (Clergy Community Coalition) rapidly pivoted to virtual meetings the morning after hurricane-force winds and fire struck Altadena. “We moved it to virtual… and then we had no idea what was gonna happen that evening and overnight.” —Mayra Macedo-Nolan After the fire started, 56 participants gathered online, including city leaders and faith-based partners, forming a core response network. “Everybody wanted to be together… especially in a crisis like this.” —Mayra Pastor Kerwin and his wife Madeline evacuated with almost no notice after hearing the sheriff outside their door. “We, Madeline and I, like so many others, were fleeing for our lives.” —Kerwin Manning For weeks, they didn't know whether their home was still standing; the priority became their church and community. “We didn't know if our home was standing… we were more concerned about our church, our community.” —Kerwin Pasadena Church began relief work immediately—even before confirming their own housing stability. “This is the first interview or anything I've done online back in my home.” —Kerwin Door of Hope's CEO evacuated with her children and lost her home; she quickly organized shelter responses for others. “I found out that my house had been entirely destroyed.” —Megan Katerjian Within 10 days, Door of Hope launched a formal housing assistance program for fire-affected families. “Door of Hope had launched what we call the Eaton Fire Housing Assistance Program.” —Megan The CCC became a spiritual and logistical backbone for Altadena's recovery, activating two decades of community-building. “This was a time that it was really important for the local clergy to be in conversation with one another.” —Mayra Pasadena Church became a distribution hub, serving as far east as any organization in the city. “We wore our church members out.” —Kerwin Over two months, the church distributed daily essentials from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., shifting to a long-term weekly rhythm. “We thought we would do it for a couple of weeks… we were doing it every day… for about two months straight.” —Kerwin “We might run out of water, we might run out of toothpaste, but we refuse to run out of smiles and kindness.” —Kerwin Altadena's west side—long a haven for Black and Brown families—suffered the worst structural damage and displacement. “Altadena had been a haven really for Black and Brown families who couldn't purchase homes anywhere.” —Mayra Many impacted residents were informal renters or multigenerational households without clear legal housing claims. “These are the stories of people… for whom there is no path back to Altadena anytime soon.” —Megan 11 churches were lost or damaged, including small and under-resourced congregations still unsure about rebuilding. “We lost 10 houses of worship, and one was partially burned… essentially 11.” —Mayra Local churches served both members and neighbors regardless of formal affiliation, often the first to show up with aid. “We don't do any of this work alone.” —Megan CCC supports 100+ churches across Pasadena with infrastructure, grants, emotional care, and community strategy. “We want them to be okay… and then as they serve their church members and the neighbors surrounding their church.” —Mayra Door of Hope offered security deposits, rent, emergency shelter, tool replacement, and even vehicles to affected families. “Beauty for ashes” “We just have to do more of it.” —Megan Volunteers gave out handwritten cards from kids across the country; some were shared at distribution events. “I've got a box full of cards from kids… just like it's going to be okay. We're praying for it.” —Kerwin A guiding pastoral metaphor: vultures circling a wounded deer, and the need to protect the vulnerable from predation. “The vultures were circling… and I covered the deer… and the vultures left.” —Kerwin “The needs have not slowed. … finances always follow just heart and compassion and awareness.” —Megan “You learn so much in the middle of crisis. One of the things that crisis does is it confirms character and you realize like what people are made of when you're going through something.” “Until. Until the need is gone, until we don't have to do it anymore.” —Kerwin The immigrant community faces a second “fire”—ICE raids and deportation threats layered atop housing loss. “The intersection of those… the two fires, the fire that we didn't know we were gonna have, and the fire that we knew was coming.” —Mayra CCC pastors protested ICE actions together, maintaining peace through community presence and music. “The pastors were there… and then it's just… it's a sacred party.” —Mayra Latino cultural traditions of protest, grief, and celebration shaped a healing, communal public presence. “We cry and we're gonna probably celebrate and eat food and dance together.” —Mayra Local leaders are pushing back against a 10-year recovery timeline with a goal of rebuilding within 3–5 years. “We reject that. She said, three to five years, that's what we're gonna push for.” —Mayra Community grief deepened when the first burned lot was sold; hope emerged again when the first rebuilding began. “There they go… it's gonna start selling.” / “We think there was… this collective celebration.” —Mayra “Soon and very soon we're gonna see the King.” —Kerwin Kerwin invoked Isaiah 61:3: “Beauty will rise” as a spiritual theme for their church's recovery ministry. “We believe that we're able to continue to do what we're doing knowing that, trusting that beauty's gonna rise.” —Kerwin The phrase “Altadena is not for sale” became a rallying cry—although some elders opted to relocate for peace. “It's up to you. Our prayer is that more people will want to stay than leave.” —Kerwin Ongoing challenges include zoning delays, state and county coordination issues, and political friction at the national level. “The church has always been a vital provider of resources, critical social services and resources in communities on an ongoing basis in normal time.” —Mayra ”The greatest sense that you get from being there is people are together. There's a sense of unity and community protection that is very palpable.” A sacred party Resilience and God's presence and strength “It feels like our president doesn't like us… our governor… whatever they've got going on impacts us.” —Kerwin “The church… is always a vital provider… of resources, critical social services… in normal time.” —Mayra About the Guests Mayra Macedo-Nolan is Executive Director of the Clergy Community Coalition of Greater Pasadena, where she leads efforts to strengthen faith-based response to systemic inequities in housing, education, and social services. In this QHHT Hypnosis session, we enter those realms in a vivid way . My client travels through his past life journey to a realm of Fairies, Pixies, Dryads, Dwarves, Dragon Folk, Elfins, and even Vampires. (Yes, a race of vampires revealed themselves for the first time in one of my sessions)This regression shows us a dimension where ancient magic coexists with advanced technology. It's a fusion of mythical timelines, and off-world civilizations. Honestly, this session felt like a cross between Lord of the Rings and a high-frequency sci-fi soul awakening. I'd love to see this on Netflix! My client explored three incarnations, each unfolding different aspects of his soul journey, mission on Earth, and soul contracts with these mystical beings. I'll be sharing each lifetime as a separate episode, so stay tuned for the full timeline.I absolutely loved guiding him through this deep and sacred experience—and I hope it activates something powerful in you as well.Thank you for listening. Nicky Gonzalez joins us to discuss her Gothic debut novel, Mayra (2025, Random House), a story about two friends who reunite in a mysterious house in the Florida Everglades and uncover a hidden history. It's a book that Karen Thompson Walker describes as "part coming-of-age story, part Twilight Zone episode, part thoughtful meditation on all of the ways that memory is itself a haunted house." Gonzalez hails from Hialeah, Florida. She earned her MFA from the University of Oregon, where she also taught fiction and composition. Her work has appeared in McSweeney's Quarterly Concern, BOMB Magazine, Kenyon Review Online, and Taco Bell Quarterly, among other publications. In 2021 she was a finalist for the Granum Foundation Prize.Host: Davin MalasarnThe Artist's Statement is brought to you by The Granum Foundation.
This week on Chins and Giggles, we're hopping across the border and straight into a reality check! Mayra's Mexico trip serves up all the feels- from appreciating different lifestyles to realizing just how bougie we've gotten as adults (hello, A/C and iced coffee). We're talking family vacations, why our childhoods were DIY Disneyland, and how we're now making up for it with every adult trip. Plus, what did you think “rich” meant growing up? If you said eating at Olive Garden and your own bedroom, you're one of us. Stick around for the chaotic "Who's Most Likely To" Garcia Family edition… someone's definitely getting exposed.
What happens when you make a heartfelt promise in a past life that carries over to your current lifetime? In this delicate past life session we meet a young woman, whose only solace was the quiet, secret love she shared with a young man. It was a forbidden love. I want you to pay attention to some of the oaths and promises she makes out of anger in this past life. Some of these promises have carried over her into her present life—an unconscious promise that now creates resistance in love and in her relationships today. I want to thank her for allowing me to share this deeply personal journey with all of you. She offers it with the hope that someone listening may feel seen, and perhaps even heal, just as she has by exploring this past life. In this next past life therapy session, I'm sharing an interesting hypnosis session I facilitated four years ago, one that continues to resonate deeply with me. This session is a beautiful reminder of how women can rise, heal, and persevere despite the karmic challenges and circumstances carried through their soul memories.Through exploring her past life, my client uncovered deep layers of soul karma that were affecting her current life. As we journeyed deeper into the subconscious healing process, she also connected with her spirit guides, who came forward with profound guidance and healing messages. Their wisdom helped her realign with her soul's purpose, offering clarity on the path she is meant to walk. This session is a true testament to the power of awakening the soul, finding inner peace, and remembering that we are always supported by the unseen realms as we heal, grow, and evolve. #pastlifetherapy #soulmemory #karmiclessons #soulhealing #connectingwithspiritguides #channelyourguides #pastliferegression #reincarnationstories #soulsignshypnosis #pastliveswithmayrarath #pastlifepodcastMayra Rath is a Spiritual Hypnotherapist specializing in Past Life Regression Therapy and QHHT Hypnosis. This episode of Mutuality Matters, hosted by CBE International, interviews Mayra Ugalde who delves into the significant role women played in Paul's ministry and offers insights into commonly misunderstood biblical passages used to limit women's roles in church and society. The discussion emphasizes the importance of understanding the cultural context of scripture, the equality in Christ beyond gender, and the mutual submission in Christian marriage. Various translations of key texts like Ephesians 5 and Genesis 3:16 are compared to highlight biases and interpretations. The episode concludes with a call to read the Bible holistically to grasp its true message of equality and mutuality in Christ. This week, Karina and Mayra are diving deep into the YouTube archives — and it's giving chaos and questionable behavior. From iconic glow-ups to unhinged DIYs, the twins react to the most viral (and occasionally tragic) videos from their 10+ year YouTube careers. And if that's not enough, things get real as they also break down the funny, awkward, and totally cringey truths about feminine hygiene. It's honesty, history, and a whole lotta laughs — you've been warned.
This week on Chins and Giggles, Karina and Mayra are spilling all the tea from a wild weekend that had it all—concert chaos, tipsy tumbles, and losing themselves (literally). From dancing the night away to face-planting into the unexpected, the girls share their hilarious misadventures and what really went down. But it's not all laughs—things get real as they dive into the emotional rollercoaster of healing, how to find your spark again, and learning to navigate the messy middle with grace. Tap in for giggles, growth, and a little glam gone rogue.
