Grief is a natural response to loss. The more significant the loss, the more intense the grief will be. In this episode, I sat down to talk with my therapist asking a question like, how long should grief last? Is being emotional a sign of weakness? What are some of the biggest challenges of grief? Is it crazy to think of your deceased loved as being alone and lonely? Is grief limited to just the death of a loved one? If you have ever felt alone in grief you will want to listen to this weeks episode. Think of it as your personal therapy session. Separated by thousands of miles my guest this week missed saying goodbye to her father by one minute. Unable to attend the funeral in America due to the pandemic the only way to deal with her grief was to walk it out. Postponed and canceled funeral and flights, Long distant calls, and bedside facetime vigils are just some of the things Christian Life Coach Jenny Allen faced when her father died in February 2020. The death of my mother shocked my world, it still does. I know it happened, but struggle to believe it. How do you get the mind to accept what it cannot understand? At its peak, I was depressed and visualised mummy in a lonely place separated from us. I tormented myself with the different stages of her decaying body, wondering how long it would take before she was was just a skeleton. Greif traumatised me as well as the pain and void it brought. How do you manage the pain, the loss, the devastation that grief brings? What causes grief, is it just the death of a loved one? In this series, I explore these and many more aspects of navigating through grief with guests who shared their stories, their journey and the impact of grief in their lives https://living-loss.org/
It's not easy for men to talk. In this episode, I sat down with my brother to discuss some of his fears, where they stem from and their effect on his mental health, and emotional wellbeing as a man. He opens up with his first memory of fear as a child and some of the behaviour patterns developed as a result of them. 36 minutes into our conversation he expanded on how fear has affected his life and how he has and continues to overcome and manage them. Emotional Fear can cause you to do the most illogical things all in the name of protecion. I was often misunderstood due to the way my brain worked in order to protect me from the fear of humiliation. As a child, it got me into trouble, as an adult it caused me to be judged, misunderstood, and isolated. Today I'm able to feel the fear and do it anyway. Fear can dominate our lives emotionally. It can prevent us from doing things physically, but it can also be harmful to our bodies causing sickness and various disorders. Fear affected my hair, digestive and immune system. Sometimes breaking the cycle meant going beyond the emotional elements, I had to listen to what my body was saying and how it was reacting. How do you comfort yourself when you're feeling low? What do you tell your self, what words and thoughts do you feed yourself? Do they fill you up or tear you down? Do they empower you or discourage you? For years my words were far from comforting. When I was feeling low, the more I thought about my situation the worse the thoughts I thoughts towards myself made me feel. What we tell ourselves when we are feeling vulnerable is important, it is the difference between consuming poison or medicine when we are emotionally unwell.
