There's an old story about two wolves—one filled with anger, fear, and doubt; the other with love, hope, and gratitude. They live inside each of us, battling for our attention. Which one wins? The one you feed. In this episode, we explore how our daily choices—especially in moments of stress, uncertainty, or hardship—shape who we become. Do we feed the negativity that keeps us stuck, or the gratitude and curiosity that open our hearts and expand our lives? Listen to this podcast as an invitation to choose the thoughts, habits, and perspectives that help you grow—so you can meet whatever comes your way with more strength, openness, and possibility. Hey mission fam! In this week's episode, #205 - Emotional Metabolism, I'm diving deep into what I'm calling "emotional metabolism" - a game-changing way to think about how we process our feelings. Using a fun food analogy, I explain why trying to "get rid" of anxiety or negative emotions actually makes them stronger. Instead, I share how we can learn to feel our emotions the same way we eat nutritious food - with acceptance and purpose. I break down why our brains interpret emotional experiences as threats and how resistance creates more suffering. Through real examples from missionaries and returned missionaries, I demonstrate how simply observing our emotions without judgment can transform our experience. The key takeaway? We're not meant to eliminate difficult feelings, but to metabolize them - just like our bodies process nutrients. If you're struggling with anxiety, negative thoughts, or feeling overwhelmed on your mission, this episode is for you. I'll help you understand that having challenging emotions is completely normal and part of our human design. By the end, you'll have a new perspective on emotional processing that can help you move through difficult experiences with more grace and understanding. As always, if you found this episode helpful, I want to invite you to subscribe if you aren't already, share this episode with your friends and missionaries you know, and write a review. I know this work will help LDS missionaries around the world and it would mean so much to me if you did. Until next week my friends. Like no matter how hard you try to push them away, they keep coming back, louder than ever? Maybe you deal with intrusive thoughts that feel terrifying, or you constantly overthink every decision. These thoughts can feel really overwhelming and they can seem to stop you from moving forward in life, from being happy, doing your work, or building relationships. If that sounds like you, then let me teach you an exercise that can help you break free from struggling with intrusive thoughts or overthinking. It's called the Passengers on the Bus metaphor from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This metaphor was developed by Dr. Steven Hayes, the founder of ACT, and it offers a simple but powerful shift: You are not your thoughts—you are the driver of your life. Be guided with a powerful combination of mindfulness and a specific mudra, a hand gesture, to help you release negative thoughts. It's perfectly natural for negative thoughts to arise, but often we hold onto them, allowing them to cloud our minds and affect our well-being. This practice will provide you with a tool to acknowledge these thoughts without judgment, and actively let them go, creating space for greater peace and clarity. The mudra we'll use will facilitate the flow of energy in a way that supports this release, helping you to clear your mind and return to a state of balance. Jason emphasizes the importance of identifying these harmful thought patterns and replacing them with truth from God's Word. We must actively engage in renewing our minds through reading Scripture, speaking declarations of truth, and singing praises to God. The ultimate goal is to align one's thoughts with God's truth and live out a life that reflects this renewed mindset.

Have you ever noticed how your thoughts can dramatically affect your emotions and actions? There's profound truth in the biblical wisdom "For as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he" (Proverbs 23:7) – a principle now validated by modern psychological research. When negative thought patterns take hold, they create what therapists call "cognitive distortions" or what I like to call "stinking thinking." These distorted thought patterns can fuel depression, anxiety, and a host of other mental health challenges. The good news? You don't have to remain captive to these harmful thoughts. By recognizing these patterns and applying biblical principles, you can experience remarkable transformation in your mindset and emotional wellbeing. In this episode, I walk through the top ten cognitive distortions that commonly plague our thinking – from all-or-nothing thinking and overgeneralization to emotional reasoning and personalization. I pair each distortion with powerful Scripture that offers a pathway to renewed thinking. We explore how Romans 12:2 calls us to be "transformed by the renewing of your mind," and how 2 Corinthians 10:5 encourages us to "take every thought captive." These aren't just spiritual platitudes but practical tools for mental health.Remember, your past pain doesn't have to dictate your future. As I often tell my clients, "Do not let your pain become your idol." Instead, let God use that pain as a launching point for a meaningful, purposeful life. Whether you're personally struggling with depression or supporting someone who is, this episode offers both compassionate understanding and practical strategies for moving forward. For additional resources, check out my book "Getting a Grip on Depression" available on my website, and remember – you are fearfully and wonderfully made, valued and loved by the God who created you.Let John know what you think!

It's interesting that moms are being told how good and admirable it is to ask for help, then in the same breath we are told not to help our kids when they ask for it. "They're old enough to do it themselves." "They're big enough to do it themselves." "That's not mine, they should do it.""If I don't do it no one else will." I'm big enough, old enough and perfectly capable of simple tasks and sometimes those are the ones I feel are too big when I have so much else going on. I want my kids to know they can always ask for my help. Even when it's a problem or task to face on their own, I'll be there with them as a listening ear and word of guidance. Why would my kids ask for help with the big stuff if I instilled a "do it yourself" belief with the small stuff? This is my perspective that nurtures my willingness to serve seamlessly, say "yes" to helping and instilling lifelong beliefs. This is the Instagram reel I mentioned in the episode. Journalling regularly has been shown to decrease emotional stress, make it easier to turn new behaviours into long term habits, improve the quality of our relationships and, ultimately, help us lead more mindful and intentional lives. It can help improve sleep, lead to better decision making and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. Feel Better Live More Bitesize is my weekly podcast for your mind, body, and heart. In this episode, I discuss a proven principle and technique for releasing ourselves from counterproductive fights against our negative thoughts.
Let's turn negative thoughts into positive outcomes. You may not know this, but I could have written an encyclopedia on rumination and negative thinking. In the past, I've let these thoughts sink deep into my soul and impact me in ways that weren't helpful. Thankfully, I've grown since then, and recognized the human tendency towards negative bias. In this episode, I'm sharing how you can get out of your own way and avoid getting in your own head and through a simple energy shift. If you're faced with something extremely difficult or even traumatizing, these tips will help you come out on the other side. In this episode, you will learn about: The ways I've experienced negative thinking outcomes in my own life. How our brains are wired for negative bias and what that means for us. What the comparison trap is and how it can affect your life. The different ways women stand in their own way in business. Why “just thinking positively” doesn't actually work. Our negative thought triggers and why we need to identify them. How you can create more space in your brain for the good stuff. The one question you can ask yourself to reframe any situation. How to do an energy allocation audit and why it helps. Today's episode is brought to you by LinkedVA. Transform your business growth with expert virtual team members who handle your essential tasks. Hi! Have you said to yourself lately, “I would really like to do ‘x' “ but, your negative thoughts tells you not to? Why do we feel guilty when we spend on ourselves? Not all of us feel this way but for many of us, we've got that negative self-talk – a voice – a script that is on constant repeat - perhaps from your mother, grandmother, partner, etc, that tells us we shouldn't spend on ourself. In today's show, I'm sharing with you my latest adventure as a solo traveler to an overnight destination spa a few hours from where I live. It sounds wonderful, doesn't it? It was. But for me to get there, I had some negative self-talk that I had to overcome. If you too struggle with spending on you, you're in the right place. We are worthy of spending money that we earn on things that really matter to us. And I've got a positive affirmation you can use to help you reframe those thoughts and get you, finally taking action and doing the things you really want to do. Let's do this, it's time to choose happy! Cheers, Marie Next Steps:
