Ghislaine Maxwell Has Her Trial Postponed After Getting Hit With A Superseded Indictment

Ghislaine Maxwell's federal trial was originally scheduled to begin on July 12, 2021, but it was postponed after prosecutors filed a superseding indictment adding new sex-trafficking charges. Maxwell's lawyers argued that the additional allegations significantly expanded the case and left them without enough time to examine the new evidence, conduct further investigations and prepare an adequate defense. U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan agreed that a limited delay was justified, particularly because pandemic restrictions had already complicated meetings between Maxwell and her attorneys and slowed the review of an enormous amount of discovery. The judge rejected the idea of forcing the defense to proceed under a compressed timetable and moved the case into the fall. The postponement pushed jury selection into November, with opening statements eventually beginning on November 29, 2021. Although the defense had sought more preparation time, the delay also prolonged Maxwell's detention at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, where she and her lawyers repeatedly complained about restrictive and deteriorating conditions. Prosecutors maintained that they were prepared to proceed and opposed any unnecessarily lengthy postponement, while the court attempted to balance Maxwell's right to prepare her defense against the public and the survivors' interest in seeing the case resolved. The trial ultimately went forward more than four months after its original start date, ending with Maxwell's conviction on five federal charges in December 2021.to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-epstein-chronicles--5003294/support.

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life
Why Are We Waiting to Be Happy? Ulrika Torquato on the Quiet Cost of Postponed Joy

Healthy Mind, Healthy Life

Play Episode Listen Later May 22, 2026 22:16

Send us Fan Mail Most of us are not unhappy. We are postponed. We have quietly agreed with ourselves that joy is something we will get to. After this project. After this season. After we have earned it. And then one day we look up, the years have moved, and the happiness is still waiting in some future room we never quite walked into. Yusuf sits down with Ulrika Torquato, a former doctor turned opera singer now studying palliative care psychology, to ask a question most of us live inside but rarely say out loud. Why are we waiting to be happy? They cover where the rule of "earning happiness" comes from, why big life changes do not deliver what we hoped, what everyday joy actually looks like, and the lesson Ulrika has learned from sitting with people at the end of their lives about what they wish they had noticed sooner. About the Guest: Ulrika Torquato lives in Switzerland and brings a rare lived breadth to this work. She trained and practised in medicine, then followed a different calling and studied and performed opera as a soprano, and is now pursuing post-graduate work in the psychology of palliative care. Her current focus is on how we delay our own joy, what people regret at the end of their lives, and how something as small as noticing the birds outside the window can return us to a life we already have. She is the creator of a free app called Joyring, designed to help people gently notice and collect small moments of joy. Key Takeaways: Most of us are not unhappy. We are postponing. Joy is something we have quietly agreed to defer until we have earned it. The rule that happiness must be earned is something most of us absorbed as children. We did not choose it. Recognising that is the first shift. Big life changes — the move, the divorce, the promotion, the achievement — bring change but rarely deliver the happiness we attached to them. Real happiness is not constant positivity. It is presence. The willingness to sit with what is here, even on hard days, and notice the small good things that are still present. This is not toxic positivity. Bad things are bad. Feel them. But notice the good coffee, the bird singing, the small thing your day still gave you. People at the end of their lives almost never regret what they did not achieve. They regret not having truly lived.  Connect With the Guest Joyring app (free): https://joyring.com Personal website: https://ulrikatorquato.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ulrika-torquato/   Episode Chapters: [00:00] Cold Open — The Future Room We Never Walked Into [02:30] Welcome and Introducing Ulrika Torquato [04:00] The Biggest Misconception: That Happiness Has to Be Earned [07:00] Where the Rule of "Earning Joy" Comes From [10:00] Why Big Life Changes Do Not Deliver What We Hoped [13:00] What Everyday Joy Actually Looks Like [15:30] Ulrika's Own Story: From Medicine to Opera to Presence [18:00] Hard Days, Bad Days, and Why This Is Not Toxic Positivity [22:00] The Practice of Returning: How Ulrika Comes Back to Joy [24:30] The Joyring App and How It Helps [27:00] What the Dying Wish They Had Noticed Sooner [28:30] Closing Reflection: Stop Postponing for One Minute   Want to be a guest on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life? Nick Reiner appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court on April 29 for what was scheduled as the preliminary hearing in the double murder case stemming from the December 14, 2025, stabbing deaths of his parents, filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Singer Reiner, inside the family's Brentwood residence. The hearing was continued to September 15 after both the prosecution and defense agreed that outstanding evidence — specifically, the still-incomplete autopsy reports from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner — necessitated additional time. Prosecutor Jonathan Chung stated the autopsy reports represent the remaining evidence the defense requires for discovery. Public defender Kimberly Greene indicated she expects to receive additional materials as well. Over two terabytes of data are reportedly still being processed. Nick Reiner has pled not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, with a special circumstances allegation of multiple murders and an additional allegation that a knife was used in the killings. The charges make him eligible for the death penalty under California law. DA Nathan Hochman has not publicly announced whether his office will seek that penalty, stating he will consult the family before making a final determination. Nick Reiner has been held without bail at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility since his arrest. His original attorney, Alan Jackson, withdrew during the January 7 arraignment, and Greene was appointed as his public defender. A sealed medical order has been filed in the case. Nick Reiner's mental health history — including a schizoaffective disorder diagnosis and a court-approved conservatorship from 2020 to 2021 — remains a significant factor the defense has not yet formally addressed. Eric Faddis provides legal analysis of the procedural delays, the implications of the outstanding autopsy reports, and the potential defense strategies that may emerge as the case progresses toward trial.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? SEASON 4 EPISODE 77: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (2:30) SPECIAL COMMENT: Did Trump lose to Iran because the war was escalating too quickly for him? Firstly, great cease fire, Trump. Oh did we mention it doesn’t include Lebanon but it DOES include Iran closing the strait of Hormuz on Day 1. CEASEFIRE? This is way more FIRE than CEASE. How do you LOSE a cease fire, El Presidente? But the bigger question: did Trump really call off his genocide because he didn’t need the missiles flying THIS week? Because this is way too early to precipitate a crisis HERE, in AMERICA? Did he give the Iranians control of Hormuz and let them keep their uranium and get out from under the sanctions because while the FIRST reason for this pointless brinksmanship was a distraction from the Epstein Files, the SECOND reason was to have a reason in late summer and early autumn to declare a domestic emergency HERE, and mess with the elections? To extrapolate from the cynical but entirely logical and disturbing writings of the great historian Professor Tim Snyder, is all this because Trump didn’t need retaliation from Iran and maybe the threat of Iranian terrorism (real or staged) on APRIL 9th… he needs it on OCTOBER 9th… so this was not only postponed, but it was postponed already pre-sabotaged, so he can keep it on a back burner TIL then, or bring it back later when he needs to lie and say Iran is a threat HERE? PLUS: Thank you Pam Bondi for putting Epstein back on the map, by not just going to the House deposition and taking the hit. Now we can again point at an all-too-obvious Trump Epstein cover-up. The other day I jokingly asked 'Where the F happened to Rudy Giuliani?" and all of a sudden he's back. And my old boss Jeff Shell did indeed get fired, for the second time, as a major TV network president. B-Block (29:15) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Dr. Naomi Wolf is an all-time great. This time, she is unaware of the sun. We have Trump-inspired Eggcorn propagators talking about "Litnis Tests" and the "Commander And Chief!" A boss at X describes writing on the site as "tweeting." And as Trump threatens to arrest reporters (again) the White House Correspondents Dinner looms and they will welcome him, but no critics, no comedians, and no protest except the lamest thing you've ever heard: The Jake Tapper Protest Pocket Square. C-Block (55:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: He was perhaps the greatest mechanical newscaster in history. Just perfect on the air. That, he explained, was because he never thought, he just read. Unfortunately if there was a mistake in the script, he'd read that too. And one night, boy was there a mistake in Jerry Dunphy's script!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
