What should we think when our prayers don't get answered the way we hoped? In this episode of Kitchen Table Theology, Pastor Jeff and Tiffany continue the series on Practical Theology and take a closer look at why some prayers seem to go unanswered. They explore biblical reasons, the role of timing, the reality of spiritual warfare, and how God's will shapes His response to our requests. What We Discussed[01:33] Introduction to Unanswered PrayerPrayer is essential, yet many believers struggle when their requests don't seem to reach God.[03:07] Placing Limits on GodHow our expectations, deadlines, and demands can hinder the effectiveness of prayer.[04:34] God's Timing vs. Our TimingWhy God may delay in answering until hearts, circumstances, or other people are ready.[05:37] Wrong Motives in PrayerJames 4:3 warns us that selfish or lustful motives can block God's answers.[08:01] The Role of the Holy SpiritWhen we don't know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes for us, aligning our requests with God's will (Romans 8:26).[09:09] Spiritual HindrancesDaniel 10 reveals how demonic forces can resist God's messengers and delay answers to prayer.[12:26] When It's Not for Our GoodSometimes God withholds what we ask because it would harm rather than help us.[13:41] Examining Our HeartsWhy we should evaluate our motives, trust God's wisdom, and remove anything that may hinder prayer.[14:31] A Final Word on Prayer A.J. Gordon once said, “You can do more than pray after you have prayed, but you can never do more than pray until you have prayed.”“God will only give us good things that are in keeping with His will and that contribute to our spiritual wellbeing.” - Pastor Jeff CranstonResources Mentioned: Billy Graham. “Why Do Prayers Go Unanswered?” July 2013. Few things test our faith more deeply than unanswered prayer. As our daily prayer and devotional remind us, when we pray with earnest hearts but don’t see change, it’s easy to feel forgotten by God. Discouragement, frustration, or even anger can creep in. Yet Isaiah 65:24 assures us that God not only hears us—He is already at work before we finish asking. Lynette Kittle reminds us that when answers feel delayed, we’re invited to draw closer to God rather than pull away. Scripture encourages us to pause and ask searching questions: Are we harboring unconfessed sin? Are we engaged in habits or influences that grieve the Holy Spirit? Or, as in Daniel’s experience, could spiritual opposition be hindering the delivery of God’s answer? Unanswered prayers are not proof that God is distant. Sometimes they are a call to repentance, an invitation to deeper trust, or part of a battle being waged in unseen realms. Even when silence feels deafening, we can cling to His promise: “No good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless” (Psalm 84:11). Today's Bible Reading: "Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear." – Isaiah 65:24 (NIV) Key Takeaways God hears and responds—even before we pray (Isaiah 65:24). Sin and spiritual compromise can create barriers to prayer (1 John 1:9, Ephesians 4:30). The enemy can interfere, but perseverance in prayer brings breakthrough (Daniel 10:12–13). Unanswered prayers are opportunities to draw near, examine our hearts, and trust God’s timing. Let’s Pray Together Dear Father, thank You for hearing my prayers even when answers seem delayed. Help me examine my heart and remove anything that creates distance between us. Strengthen me to persevere in prayer, trusting that You are faithful and good, and that You withhold no good thing from Your children. In Jesus’ name, Amen. On the morning of October 12, 2013, 23-year-old Army veteran Christian Griggs went to his in-laws' property in Angier, North Carolina to pick up his young daughter, Jaden. At 10:54 a.m., he called his father Tony to say that his father-in-law, Reverend Pat Chisenhall, was yelling at him while his estranged wife Katie hid inside the house. Six minutes later, at 11:00 a.m., Tony arrived at the Chisenhall home to find his son lying face-down, bleeding and unresponsive. Pat had shot him six times with a .22 rifle. Once in the abdomen, once on the top of his left shoulder, and four times in the back. Christian was rushed to the hospital, where he was soon pronounced dead. As his family struggled to process the sudden loss, detectives began piecing together what had happened that fateful morning. What they uncovered were conflicting accounts, multiple 911 calls, and questions that would haunt the case for years to come. There are many reasons why people begin to doubt or even deconstruct their faith. Unanswered questions. Pain and suffering. Hypocrisy and wounds. These can clutter our view of Jesus and even cause some to walk away. But doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is a stop on the journey of faith. If you're doubting, you're not disqualified. Jesus isn't walking away from you. He's walking toward you.

This podcast episode delves into the profound experience of feeling disconnected from God, a sentiment that resonates with many individuals navigating their spiritual journeys. We explore the multifaceted reasons behind such disconnection, including spiritual burnout, unanswered prayers, and the burdens of sin and guilt. As we transition from a previous series, we emphasize the importance of recognizing that disconnection does not equate to abandonment by God; rather, it often stems from our own perspectives and circumstances. Through candid discussions and personal anecdotes, we aim to provide insights and encouragement for those grappling with their faith and seeking reconnection. Ultimately, our conversation seeks to illuminate the path toward understanding and overcoming feelings of disconnection in one's spiritual life.Takeaways: The sense of disconnection from God often stems from a self-centered mindset, which can impede spiritual growth and understanding. Experiencing spiritual burnout is a common phenomenon that can lead individuals to feel distant from God, necessitating a return to foundational faith practices. Unanswered prayers should be viewed as opportunities for growth and reflection, rather than sources of disconnection from God. It is essential to recognize that feeling disconnected does not equate to abandonment by God; He remains present even when we perceive silence. Engaging in honest prayer and reflection can help individuals reconnect with God during times of perceived distance or spiritual dryness. Building a strong community and maintaining regular engagement with Scripture can provide guidance and support in overcoming feelings of disconnection.

Today is day 242 and we are studying A Rule of Prayer: Prayer. 242. What should you remember when prayers seem to go unanswered? I should be certain that God always hears my prayers and answers them by his wisdom, in his own time and manner, for my good, and for his glory. (Psalm 37:3–9; Isaiah 55; Habakkuk 3:17–19; Luke 18:1–8; James 4:2–3; 1 John 5:14–15) We will conclude today with Prayer 100. For the Answering of Prayer found on page 675 of the Book of Common Prayer (2019). If you would like to buy or download To Be a Christian, head to anglicanchurch.net/catechism. The Bible instructs us to pray without ceasing. But so many times, our prayers seem to go unanswered. In this message, Adrian Rogers observes the story of Zacharias and Elizabeth in Luke 1 to explain what to do when prayer seems unanswered. SIXTY YEARS AFTER THE CRIME REMAINS UNANSWERED: 1/8: The Long Reckoning: A Story of War, Peace, and Redemption in Vietnam –by George Black (Author) 1920 SAIGON https://www.amazon.com/Long-Reckoning-Story-Redemption-Vietnam/dp/0593534107 The American war in Vietnam has left many long-lasting scars that have not yet been sufficiently examined. The worst of them were inflicted in a tiny area bounded by the demilitarized zone between North and South Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh Trail in neighboring Laos. That small region saw the most intense aerial bombing campaign in history, the massive use of toxic chemicals, and the heaviest casualties on both sides. In The Long Reckoning, George Black recounts the inspirational story of the small cast of characters—veterans, scientists, and Quaker-inspired pacifists, and their Vietnamese partners—who used their moral authority, scientific and political ingenuity, and sheer persistence to attempt to heal the horrors that were left in the wake of the military engagement in Southeast Asia. Their intersecting story is one of reconciliation and personal redemption, embedded in a vivid portrait of Vietnam today, with all its startling collisions between past and present, in which one-time mortal enemies, in the endless shape-shifting of geopolitics, have been transformed into close allies and partners.

Centennial Christian Church sits in the heart of Fountain Park. It's the lifeline of the north St. Louis neighborhood. But last month, an EF-3 tornado destroyed the 121-year-old church. Three people were trapped inside buried beneath the rubble for nearly two hours. One of them did not make it out alive. Repeated calls from a victim inside Centennial to the city's 911 emergency line went unanswered.
