Many times we feel the pressure to keep up with these social media influencers that we compromise. We compromise our integrity, our mental health and our loved ones. We do all we can to please people and forget to prioritize
Many times we get jealous of people we could learn from. As women, many of us would rather tear down the sister next to us, instead of lifting her up. We don't realize that person could hold the key to our next destination. We ought to be uplifting, celebrating and encouraging those around us. Many women deal with postpartum depression and are afraid to say anything because they don't want to be seen as though they are incapable of taking care of their child or themselves. Speaking up and seeking help is not a sign of weakness but of strength. Moms have one of THE MOST important jobs on this planet. So it's time we give ourselves grace. We are always trying to live up to everyone's expectations, not realizing how unhealthy that can be. We let people dictate how we should live our lives and give them the power they don't deserve. It is time we take control of who we are and our happiness. the question should never be "am I living up to their expectations," rather, am I pleasing God with the way I am living my life. We need to start looking within ourselves and ask why are we so worried about what they think. It doesn't matter who the person is and their title, we can not allow anyone to govern our lives to the point of depression and not being able to walk on purpose. In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, we wanted to share a story with you all. We also want to first remind you that if you have experienced this, it is not your fault. There's nothing you could have done to make the person not do what they did to you. Regardless of how long it has been, it is never too late to speak up and take your voice back. Do not allow anyone to keep you in that victimization state. Use your voice and share your story. Also, do not be afraid to seek therapy to help deal with that trauma. To all the parents out there, We encourage you to start teaching your children the proper name of their body parts at an early age. Teach them about appropriate and non-appropriate touching. Let them know and show them that they are safe with you, and should something happen to know it is more than ok to come and speak to you about it. Too many kids suffer in silence because they are afraid to speak up and don't feel safe. We can't change the heart of these people who do these things, but we can change how we respond and speak up. Many women grew up not liking other women due to them not seeing healthy women relationships growing up. We feel like there always has to be a competition. We tear each other down because we ourselves don't know our worth. We say we are just keeping it real when really we are just projecting the pain and the hurt we ourselves carry. This is a reminder to all women that we are phenomenal, powerful, world changers, life-givers, multitaskers, resilient, and much more. It is time that we truly learn who we are and embrace ourselves. It is also time for us as women to put our heads together and stop tearing one another down. We are stronger together. we are way more than just our bodies. We are exceptional! It seems like it is always much easier to forgive ourselves than it is to forgive others. We release them, while we keep ourselves in bondage. We fail to understand that we can't pour from an empty cup. We have to learn to forgive others, as we forgive ourselves. If we wouldn't talk to, serve, treat, and act with others this way, why do we do it to ourselves? Not being able to love and forgive ourselves is an indication that we shouldn't be trusted to love and forgive others. We cannot give what we don't have. We must learn to embrace, love, cherish, respect, honor, and forgive ourselves before we can do that for anyone else. The way we allow others to treat us is a huge indication of how we feel about ourselves. Many times we allow something that happened in 30 minutes to keep us stagnant for 15 years. We use these things as a crutch to not move forward. We allow what people have done to keep us from moving forward and becoming our best selves. We claim we are over it, but every time we see that person, our mood changes, we tense up, and we start having anxiety. No one should have that much power over us. We should be able to move on for our peace's sake. Also, many of us feel like that person does not deserve our forgiveness, not taking into account that we may and we will do things that we ourselves will need forgiveness for. The same grace we want, we should be able to give. Every time we chose to not forgive, we chose to allow this person to keep us in bondage. That person will move on with their lives, while we continue to hold on to what they did. With forgiveness comes freedom. With January 28th being my 30th birthday, I am just overwhelmed with gratitude. I never thought I would see 30 years, due to so much I have endured since childhood. I have dealt with so much trauma, depression, PTSD, suicidal thoughts/attempts, yet and still I am here. Now I am walking into my 30s so free, happy, confident, and more. In that same token, I want each of us to take the time and pinpoint the many things we can be grateful for. No matter how small it is. Though 2020 was so crappy for many, we do not have to take all of that crap and make it our 2021. This is a year where we can make it whatever we wish. We don't have to hold on to all the negative. May we free ourselves and be better. We deserve to be better, but we first have to start with a heart of gratitude. Many times we think we can run away from our past and not having to deal with it. We think we can cover it all up with money, fame, and call it a success. The past is not something anyone can just escape. Past trauma, pain, hurt, can all become the very chain that binds us. in order to experience freedom, we must face these things and allow ourselves to heal and grow. we can only masquerade these things for so long. Eventually, what's inside will begin to spew out. we will begin to not only self destruct, but push away so many great people that could have been great assets in our lives. This is why so many commit suicide and go into a deep depression. May we give ourselves a chance to be great, by dealing and healing from the things that plague us. With everything going on with the presidential election and COVID cases going up, please be sure to take care of yourself. Take the necessary precaution needed for your safety and your loved ones. Remember to be mindful of those around you who are still healing from miscarriages, infant loss, and stillbirth. Be mindful of the things you say. Not everything you can do, you should do. Use wisdom in your approach, and if you don't know ow what to say, it is OK! Just let the person know that you are there for them and allow your presence to be felt. If you are hurting, it is ok to say "I am hurting". No one can read your mind, and vulnerability is not a weakness, but a strength. During times like this, many are not sure of what they should NOT say to those hurting. Some end up putting their foot in their mouths with the things they say. We have to mindful to not say things that will be throwing salt on that person's wounds. May we ask ourselves, "if that was me, how would I respond to what I am about to say to this person?" One in four women have had a miscarriage. that is a lot of woman suffering in silence. Yet, things like this are barely talked about. Many do not seem to understand the trauma a woman's body goes through during that time. Many do not understand the toll it takes on the mind. Due to a lack of education and much ignorances, many unconsciously throw salt on that womb when they speak to a woman who is going through something like this. It breaks my heart to know that Breonna Taylor's family was not able to get justice for her. why is it that the life of an animal seems to be more important than that of a black person? Not only do we have to teach our black sons how to avoid being killed, but now we have to also teach our black daughters how to avoid being killed in their own homes. When will it be enough? As someone who has had many suicide attempts, I know first hand how difficult it can be dealing with depression. we allow the things going on in our lives to feed us this lie about us not matter. We tell ourselves that this world would be better without us in it. forgetting that we are here for a purpose. No matter how bad it seems, it will not last always. After the rain, the sun will shine. There is so much help out there. Please do not be ashamed to speak up and seek help. To those of us who ask others how they are doing when we don't really care, may we no longer do that. Many are fighting a battle we know nothing of. May we learn to truly care for one another. May we learn to care for those in our lives. If someone we know has become withdrawn suddenly, may we make it our business to check and make sure that person is ok. Don't allow yourself to sit and die in silence. I know it can be easier said than done, but remember no one can read your mind. If something is wrong and doesn't sit well with you, please speak up. You have to teach people how to treat you by setting boundaries for what you will and will not allow. Remember, it is not what you say, but how it is said. You are not a doormat, so do not allow people to walk all over you. You don't have to be mean and angry to get your point across. You can respectfully speak up and say how you feel. Your feelings are valid, but don't let it control you. With everything, acknowledge how you feel, find out whats the cause of it, deal with it, then move on. With all of us adjusting to our new normalcy as parents, let us not just place our children in front of the computer, then just leave without checking in to make sure they are paying attention and not being disruptive. Let us give these teachers the support they need to teach our children properly. May we make it clear to our kids that disrespect will not be tolerated. It is tough and stressful for us all, so let's work together to make it better. For those of us who homeschool, may we be a little bit more patient with ourselves and our little ones. I know it is challenging, but parents please know that we are the best teacher for our children. If they see that we are ready to give up, they will want to give up as well. As a believer of Christ, you can not be ok with everything that has been going on. The Bible says to mourn with those who morn, and to rejoice with those who rejoice. It also says to love our neighbors as ourselves. Even if you don't know what to do, it would be wise to go before God to pray and figure out what it is that you can do to become a part of the change that is needed. We can't stand around and say this has nothing to do with us. We ought to be each other's keeper. If as a believer what's going on doesn't move you, I have to question your salvation. The story of 19 year old Toyin is a heartbreaking one. This young woman who was so zealous to see justice for the men in the black community didn't find one person to stand up for her on her last day. A woman who stood and protested for equality didn't find anyone to stand for her life. This young woman was raped. She went to seek out help from the police, the church, and even went on twitter, asking for help. No one helped her and she ended up being murdered at the end. This is not ok. This is not right. Many are fighting for the justice and equality of our black men, But who is fighting for our black women? Ladies, may this be a wake-up call for us to make sure we get some self-defense classes, buy a mace, a pocket knife, or something to protect ourselves. Gentlemen, may you all truly become the protector you are called to be for the ladies. May this be a lesson all for us to care for one another, be one another's keeper. I know it is not easy to have certain conversations with our kids, especially when it comes to racism and discrimination. There are parents who worry about exposing their children to these issues at an early age. Others don't want to talk about it because they themselves might not fully understand or don't feel comfortable discussing it. These types are conversations will be different for everyone. While there is no one-size-fits-all approach, the science is clear: the earlier parents start the conversation with their children the better. Babies notice physical differences, including skin color, from as early as 6 months. Studies have shown that by age 5, children can show signs of racial bias, such as treating people from one racial group more favorably than the other. Ignoring or avoiding the topic isn't protecting children, it's leaving them exposed to bias that exists wherever we live. Despite our skin color differences, we all bleed the same. What is going on right now is not only social and racial injustice, it is also a lack of sympathy for a human race. We have placed the value of animals higher than that of a group of people based on skin color. We know all lives matter, but at this moment we just need the help of all races with #blacklivesmatter, because black lives are in danger. Police brutality is not new. A mom should not be afraid to send her son out, due to fear of him being killed by cops, just because he is black. Yes, there are good cops, but bad company corrupts good character. The black community has been oppressed for years. The police departments have gotten away with killing our black people for years. we are tired, we #cantbreath, we need the help of all caucasian male/female to stand, to speak up and recognize we are equal. We need all those in the police department who has been oppressing our people to be held responsible. It should be justice for all, not for some. we can no longer accept this systematic racism and prejudice that's been going on. We need the police to get their knee off of our neck! Therapy is not for those we consider "crazy". Do not allow the fear of being labeled to hinder you from feeling better. You do not have to go with the first therapist you find. It is ok to ask questions to those you know have been to therapy and to the therapist you may find. Speak with few, read reviews, get a sense of who the person is, and if they're a good fit for you. Mental health care is healthcare. The same way you take care of your physical body, you should take care of your mind as well. Be open to the experience. It may be uncomfortable to an extent, but try to remember that it is for the betterment of yourself. As we start our episode on mental wellness for the rest of the month, I figured it was only right to share my story on how I have come to understand the importance of mental health. You don't have to be mentally ill to seek out therapy or counseling. I know many of us have been raised to believe that something had to be extremely wrong for us to get the help we desperately need. We walk around hurting and bleeding on others, failing to realize it all starts in the mind. If we learn to take better care of our mind, it will help us to be better individuals for ourselves and our loved ones.
