Hello to you listening in Hatboro, Pennsylvania!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. As my mom told it I refused to transition from toddler diapers to toddler big girl pull ups the traditional way. No matter how they enticed me I was not going to sit on the Little Human pot. I wanted up on the Big Human's porcelain throne. Maybe my mother saw genius in my independence or maybe she was just harried with more babies coming along behind me every 18 months or so. She gave in. I did potty training my way.But sad to say “my way” was not as often as you would think. That little girl's voice got shut down and at times, forsaken in the din of the other voices, voices of authority, duty, obligation, and responsibility. But here's the thing. Her voice always was and still is her very own! Do you realize there is no other voice like yours? And never will be. Choose to use it.Story Prompt: Somewhere in the long ago is a story about how you decided to do it your way, with your voice. Write that story! Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something. All that matters is you have a story. You're always invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe and spread the word with a generous 5-star review and comment - it helps us all - and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out Services I Offer,✓ For a no-obligation conversation about your communication challenges, get in touch with me today✓ Stay current with Diane on LinkedIn, as “Wyzga on Words” on Substack, and now Pandora RadioStories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present Quarter Moon Story Arts. Power to the People: Use Your Voice, Change the World (Headline Press, 2024) is Danny Sriskandarajah‘s radical manifesto for change designed to inspire citizen action around the world. The book presents a blueprint for how we, as individuals, can make a difference through greater community engagement and how we can deliver a society that works for the many and not the few. He speaks to voter apathy and a growing sense that elections no longer matter, with politicians and institutions too focused on short-term issues to grapple with complex global problems such as climate change, rising inequality, and digital disruption. Yet the book is also filled with inspiring real-life examples of citizen power in action, ranging from a volunteer-run repair café in Danny's local suburb to Avaaz's successful campaigns to tackle endemic corruption in Brazil. From public ownership of social media spaces to democratizing share ownership and from re-energizing co-operatives to creating a people's chamber at the United Nations, this campaigning book has a mission to make us reclaim our power as citizens of the world. Hey sis! Do I have a special guest for you today on the Her Best Self Pod! Jaqueline Sherman has an inspiring story about overcoming an eating disorder rooted in challenging family dynamics that left her feeling voiceless. At 15, during her parents' divorce, she turned to bingeing and purging to cope with the chaos. Despite trying various treatment centers and Overeaters Anonymous, real change came only after working with her therapist, Anita Johnston, who helped her identify the underlying needs driving her behaviors. Through dedicated effort, Jaq learned to advocate for herself, set boundaries, and practice self-compassion, even when it felt forced. Her resilience is evident in her numerous comebacks after relapses, and today she enjoys a fulfilling life with a loving marriage, rewarding career, and genuine self-acceptance. Jaq's story offers hope that full recovery from an eating disorder is possible and underscores the importance of patience and persistence in the journey to self-love. ~ In today's show, we talk through so many things. Due to the event which took place on this past weekend, we want to make clear that Civic Media unequivocally stands for solving disagreements with words, not violence, and we must encourage our listeners to use ballots, not bullets, to express deeply held convictions and political views. We welcome you to Monday and the 2024 RNC in Milwaukee. We're talking about the speakers at this week's event, including Diane Hendrick. We also speak with Phoebe Petrovic from Wisconsin Watch about an article she wrote regarding Matthew Trewhella; a far right anti-abortion activist who has risen to power in the past years after being shunned by the GOP in the 90's. As always, thank you for listening, texting and calling, we couldn't do this without you! Don't forget to download the free Civic Media app and take us wherever you are in the world! It's also a great privilege for me to share today's interview with Kara Goucher. Kara is a two-time Olympian, World Championship medalist, and one of the most accomplished and admired long-distance runners of our time. Beyond her competitive achievements, Kara is also a passionate advocate for clean sport and gender equity, an inspiring speaker, author, podcaster and NBC broadcaster for track and field. She's someone who continues to inspire runners of all levels. As we'll talk about in this interview, two years ago, Kara began slipping while she was running. And after seeing multiple doctors, she was diagnosed with Runner's Dystonia, a neurological disorder with some similarities to Parkinson's. Many of you may remember the interview I did with my friend, and fellow Team Foxer, Justine Galloway, who also has Runner's Dystonia. So this is something we'll also talk about in this episode. Kara also as a unique and hard-won perspective on the power of brands to affect social change, and the power that we have as people– individually and collectively– to move and work with them to do so. Most recently, Kara has partnered with Brooks Running, a brand that holds a very special place in our hearts here at Charity Miles. Whenever we ask you what brands you want us to partner with, Brooks is always the #1 response. Which is why we are so thrilled to also be partnering with Brooks this year. For over a century, Brooks has been propelled by a never-ending curiosity with how humans move. It drives their every decision and every innovation. Because they believe movement is the key to feeling more alive. And we're all moving towards something. It could be the top of a mountain, a first-ever 5K, or peace of mind after a stressful day. It could be a cure for Parkinson's, a cleaner planet, fair play. So… let's run there. With gear and experiences specifically designed to take you to that place. Whether it's a headspace, a feeling, or a finish line. Let's run there. Head to BrooksRunning.com to learn more.
