NEW PODCAST DAYEp. 65 | Don’t Be ToxicThe Virgil’s Sound Den Podcast--How’s it going, guys? Today’s episode is an important one, because it’s all about being kind and how that alone is good instrument in helping your band, as well as the scene you’re in, grow. -No one wants to work with someone that makes rude comments about other bands or people, no one will want to go to your shows, no one’s going to rep your merch, if you’re not a positive person to be around, right? We all want to feel supported and loved in this scene, and you’re not going to make people feel that way if you’re burning bridges. You’re going to grow just by being helpful, kind, and trustworthy.

Whether it’s your band’s future or your own personal future, it’s important to keep your end goals in mind and put money aside when you can to make sure you meet those goals. -Sometimes, people end up really lucky and make it big with their first band. But that doesn’t always happen- so it’s important to have a backup plan for when things go south.
NEW PODCAST DAYEp. 63 | What We Can Learn From SharktankThe Virgil’s Sound Den Podcast--How’s it going guys? This week’s podcast is a pretty important one, because I explain the importance of numbers- whether it’s views, listens, likes, or sales. I have a new podcast out for you to watch, all about the importance of knowing your audience. -This episode is a really important one, because if you don't know the audience you're playing to, you're not going to grow within your scene. It's important to talk to people at your shows, reply to them on your social media, and get to know the fans that like your music so you can give them the same energy they're giving you!
NEW PODCAST DAYEp. 58 | Do I Have To Support Your Local Band? The Virgil's Sound Den Podcast--How's it going everyone?! Welllll I'm still sick...hahaBeen a hell of 2020 so fare hahaI am getting better it's just taking a little longer than I expected!BUTWhat I said last week still stands!I have an insane amount of information in my past podcast.Since we are in a new year I thought a good replay episode would be the time I had my good buddy Brandon Kellum vocalist of the band American Standards talk about his guide on how to release music!New year = New Music and if you don't release it properly it will get caught in the sea of new music and forgotten about...Don't miss out on this replay and make sure to release your music properly!
Welllllllll I am SICK everyone...It literally hurts to talk.Let me ask you a question tho. What's better than a new podcast?I'll tell ya...A killer replay of an older podcast! This episode was actually one of the first episodes I ever record.Specifically, it was episode 5 back when I used to call the podcast Learn From The Pros!It was such a blast hanging with my buddy Chris Davis of The Ghost Inside talking about ways to look at your band and how to improve it!
As a band, you probably had a bunch of ups and downs...You probably failed a lot on Instagram and you probably had some awesome realization on how Instagram and other platforms work better as well. I know I sure did. That is completely normal and it's how things work. You will always learn as you go and things will get better and better.BUT.Now you're a pro at social media.- You know when to post- You know what hashtags work and don't workYou're actually getting the hang of it!No, you can focus on properly branding yourselves and push your band forward like crazy!Pumped to pick your brain on what you should be doing in 2020.
Merry Freaking Christmas everyone! This episode is a very short episode just wishing you a Merry Christmas and also challenging you all to focus on the new year coming.Enjoy and I can't wait for the new year!
So I did it, EVERYONE...I made an Ep 2 of last week's branding Episode! I literally had a bunch of people wanting more detail. So I decided to go way more in-depth and give you a couple more bullet points. If you at all are interested in Self-branding and taking this to the next level definitely go back and listen to episode 48 and then hit this episode 49 hard!Pumped for this and pumped all you out there wanting to self-brand!
What if I told you that by doing a handful of things to SHOW the masses that your good at something could potentially make you money?- Could potentially fund your next tour.- Could potentially do this and make money on tour.- Could potentially replace your day job....I see people doing this every day and make a good living to.The issue is that people don't believe me.By putting in the work and having your end goal and being very strategic. You can take your hobby (Not your passion. Not replacing your band at all.) and show people that your amazing at it and then after a while of producing content and "proving" that you are good at this. You can start selling a product...Not sure what I mean?Confused on how you could take your- Photography hobby- Drawing hobby- Weight lifting hobbyand self-brand and actually earn side money?!Listen to this week's podcast!
What most businesses and bands focus on is 100% of the "fun" stuff or "the reason why we started this" and don't focus on the reality of what moves this thing forward and the foundational elements that will keep you around for decades.Taking the time to work on your business is just as important as working for your business. Making sure your business is running smoothly so you can focus on the other side of things. aka...The fun stuff and why we got into this in the first place.
I love doing these challenges. It takes everything we have been learning in past episodes and I actually challenge you to start putting everything we have been talking to into action.Don't just skip this episode or just decide not to do this.Don't make excuses because of the holiday. This is where we get off our butts and actually start making progress and grow our bands!Dig into this and get it done.-Steven | Virgil's Sound Den
I AM NOT KIDDING WITH THAT TITLE...THIS BAND BLEW MY MIND.I had a blast kicking is with Sam and Caleb of Marked;Life. These dudes had me literally giviong them Hi-Fives in the middle of the podcast...When I met a band that is taking the "None Traditional" route of having a band it gets me stoked. If you have listened to any of my past podcasts you will know that that's the side I focus on.I truly believe that we should not be doing the same things are "heroes" did in the '70s..ANDThat's exactly what Marked:Life is doing and what their whole approach is.I was literally blown away when I heard their accomplishment with OUT EVEN PLAYING A SHOW.Like not even one.AND YOU COULD NEVER TELL!They have been strategic from day one with EVERYTHING they have done anddddd it is paying off.Enjoy this episode and LEARN SOMETHING.
I'm stoked because I truly believe that if you decide to take advantage of this “platform” you and your band's lives will be changed forever. The band that decided to do something the “None traditional” way in this day in ageWILLWIN…The Proof is literally there. If you don’t believe me look for yourself and start paying attention to what’s happening in this world.Bands are literally getting signed without even playing a show...CHECK the podcast out on all streaming platforms OR link in bio.Don’t miss out on this one guys.-Steven
The idea of "Instant Gratification" is serious! It will literally always trap you and you will be insanely bummed when you decided to release - Your album- New Tour- Show that isn't in your home townand it doesn't do well because you decided to release it without actually any marketing and you didn't tell anyone..OR WORSEYou rushed the recording process and cut corners and it doesn't compete with the pros and you get left in the dust. This stuff happens every day and it literally hurts my heart.DON'TRUSHITand always take a step back and make sure it's done right.Definitely don't want to miss this one!
It literally BLOWS my mind how much this happens to me.You know what I am talking about...You get a friend request on Facebook and RIGHT after you confirm...They ask you to like all 5 bands they are in.THIS DOES NOT WORK.Your instantly lost in the sea of bands that live in Spamland. This mean you aren't standing out and are actually getting forgotten about. How do we fix this?I go in-depth on episode 42!Don't get caught up in the instant gratification that spamming has and focus on longevity with your band and how you can add value.
What is the one thing we all want as a band?AS MANY PEOPLE TO COME TO OUR SHOWS...Duh.How do we get there? What do we do?The answer is probably not what you think it is.I'm stoked about this subject and this episode and I'm pumped to push you to think outside of the box that we all created for our selves as musicians.Tune in and check out the latest episode of The Virgil's Sound Den Podcast and learn something!
I had a blast on this podcast talking to the dudes over in the band fairwell as they passed through Flagstaff AZ on their most recent tour. These guys are so passionate about the music it gets me stoked about the next generation of hardcore. Also, their live show is insane.I'm pumped to see where these guys go and I was very honored to have them on the podcast!
I had the opportunity to sit down with band No Home from Seattle Washington while they where on their No Sleep tour in beautiful Flagstaff Arizona. I had a blast hanging out with these guys and talking about their band and how they are growing it. These dudes are killing it and I have to say I'm blown away on how they look at their band and the mindset on how they look at how they release their music and how they are investing in their band.Later that evening I watched them play at The Hive downtown Flagstaff. THEYKILLEDIT.Learn from them and grow that band dudes!Check the blog outhttps://www.virgilssoundden.com/post/ep-39-no-homeLinks to EVERYTHING are in the blog.- Band Merch- Music- Band Accountsand morexoxoSteven
I messed up!I was out helping my mother in law cut down some OLD DEAD TREES in her yard anddddBINGBAMBOOM...A piece of wood got stuck in my eye.Now I'm a 4 eyed FREAK so I have no clue how it happened.I ended up going home hoping it would work it's way out and it didn't!I woke up the next morning and went straight into the eye doctor. He ended up pulling how a bunch of wood and said I really F'ed up my eye and there was a pretty big hole and scratch in my eye...This being said I feel pretty good now but at the time I was going to actually record the podcast I was not in the right headspace.Decided instead of recording a podcast that it would be cool to actually give you guys a "Challenge" for the week!I hope you all accept this "Challenge" and push your band to that next level and breaking point!I'll see you next week!-Steven-What’s a Jim-Jam?A Jim-Jam is the name of whoever I’m making fun of on the podcast. It could be the drummer. It could be the guitarist or the singer. This week it’s ME…Haha
When a potential fan finally decides to check out your- Instagram- YouTube- Spotify- etcWhat happens? Are they getting lost in a sea of none clickable links? Are they "clicking the link in your bio" and getting taken to a link that isn't available? What's happening? Can your potential fan smoothly find everything they are looking for?Are they finding all of your social media because of a awesome link page?Wherever the end "Landing point" for your band is(could be a website/link page or even Spotify) are your fans finding it easy?If they aren’t then you are losing potential fans every day...Tune into EP. 38 of the Virgil’s Sound Den Podcast and hear how to make your band rock solid and never lose a potential fan again.
I got to set down with the band NRWHL. These dudes are killing it right now and are super good buddies of mine! We talk about a bunch of rad stuff and how they are killing it and they have only played one show. They will show you that it actually doesn't take years and years of building something successful that (even though they are figuring it out still) if you have Drive and Focus, make good decisions and "Want it bad enough" you can actually do this. They blow my mind and im extremely excited to see how the conquer Arizona and the world.ALSO, they are releasing they're Ep on the 27th and are giving us a taste of it will a single drop on the episode. Make sure to go presave their Ep on all platform link in their bio's!Enjoy this episode!
Let me ask you this? How do you work at your job?Are you always looking for the easy way out?Are you willing to do whatever it takes? Are you thinking 5 steps ahead of what you need be doing?I believe if you don’t work hard at everythingESPECIALLY at someplace you HATE working atThat will spill over into your DREAM.Working towards this will be the hardest thing you have ever doneEven harder than your crap jobSo if you don’t give a 110% at your crap jobYou will end up not giving that when it comes time to buckle down and WORK for your band. Especially the none sexy things.Think about it?How is your work ethic?Honestly, that where your band will thrive when ALL of you buckle down and fight through all of the grit and grime. Not just one of you.A lot of bands have that one guy that fights for the whole band and that band wouldn’t be there without them.I'm here to tell all of you that you all need to buckle down and work hard towards this.
A lot happens when you decided to "Go For This Band Thing"...There is a lot of excitement yes!BUTThere are always those people that tear you down.I wanted to do something a little different this time around and personally encourage you to keep this dream alive!Keep moving forward and keep pushing towards this ultimate goal of taking over the world with your music.Don't let people speak negatively into your life and don't let them kill your dreams just because their dreams have been killed...
Ep. 34 The Story of Virgil’s Sound Den"Who is Virgil?""Why did you name your studio Virgil when your name is Steven?""Wait where did Virgil's Sound Den come from?"These are all questions I get daily and I thought to myself that I should FINALLY make a podcast all about it!Also, I'm moving to AZ right now and I thought it would be cool to take a step back and talk about "The Dude" behind it all and have more of a relaxed podcast.I hope you enjoy the podcast and I hope it answers any question you might have.
I sat down with a good buddy of mine and was blown away about all of the valuable information he gave me by just hanging out and eating some food.Mentorship is insanely important and WAY over looked. This podcast is all about the importance of having a mentor and implementing it to your band and your over all success.Don’t over look this.
Branding your band the correct way is INSANELY important. This is something that if you don't take seriously it could actually backfire and hurt your band.Clarity is the name of the game and if a potential fan is confused and they don't understand- What you stand for- What genre of music you play- If they can relate to youbefore you get on stage...you might have already lost them.Your branding is the first thing a potential fan will see and judge you on it.If your Instagram doesn't flow with your website or that your Spotify looks like a completely different band than from all of your other socials there is something wrong.A potential fan should be able to look you up while they are in the line of the venue on Instagram/Facebook/Website/Twitter/Youtube and instantly relate to you and should be able to find EVERYTHING about your band instantly. Everything should be clean and clear from your- Colors- Font's- Wording- Logo- Mission statement- and moreSo you stand out from the rest.If you want people to treat you like your a Bigger band. You need to act and look like a bigger band everywhere. On stageOff StageOn all streaming plate formsOn your Website...If you wanna be a "Big Band" you need to put the work that the BIGGER BANDS put in.
Have you ever been into a tattoo shop? What's the first thing they have? Its a stack of stickers that are for people to have. They aren't worried about $$$$ for the stickers they are focused on the value that a dollar sticker brings.Let me ask you this...would you rather walk up to a merch table and be greeted by a random girlfriend of one of the band members begging you to please buy a sticker because they need gas money to get to the next show (literally happened once...).orrrrrr would you rather walk up to the merch table and be greeted by a member of the band with a smile and a rad conversation while handing you a free sticker?Who are you going to remember the next day you roll out of bed at 10 am?I have been hounded by so many bands that are touring (technically living the dream right?!) needing gas money and to please buy something!.Focusing on always Adding Value and leaning towards making "20-year fans rather than 20-minute fans" or random people to pay for gas money...Focus on the long game and your long term goal and you will always make wise decision for your band.Your mindset going into every conversation should never be about a quick $ but about creating forever fans!Enjoy episode 31 of the Virgil's Sound Den Podcast and think about adding value off stage with a free sticker or a killer friendship bracelet and a friendly conversation!p.s. ...if I goto a METAL show and a band gives me a friendship bracelet...I would lose my mind and instantly be a 20-year fan!
Content CONtent CONTENT!Last week I talk about the importance of content and this week is all about implementing it and the mindset/tools you need to do it!What I love about this stuff it that the "Tools" I talk about you either already have or you can teach your self to implement them! Not talking about any type of gear but I'm talking about what you as a person need to work through and start posting more content as a band and GROW your fan base.Enjoy everyone!
I personally feel like if you are in a heavy band RIGHT NOW and your end goal is that you want to do this for a living and your not posting an insane amount of content.I personally believe you will be left behind...If I told you that there was a FREE way to literally be instantly in front of your fans eyes and actually gain new fans that would- Come to your shows- Buy everything you have- Put you that much closer to your end goal of taking over the worldAND YOU NEVER HAVE TO LEAVE YOUR COACH.Would you believe me?I feel like you are getting my point...Tune in to the Virgil's Sound Den Podcast Ep 29 My Heart About Content and keep an open mind while we talk about CONTENT!Enjoy and learn something, everyone!
Is drive or talent more important?!It's a very good question that I feel like everyone should ask themselves even if they are the most talented person ever.Do you have drive?Do you have enough drive to push that raw talent into success? Also, listen in while I go into depth about a bunch of personal news in my life and the studio.I had a lot of fun out of this and I hope you learn something!-Steven
The past couple of days I have been getting Phone Calls, Dm's, Emails from bands that have been challenged by the Virgils Sound Den Podcast and reached out to me to talk about why their goals aren’t lining up and the little band issues they are having.I decided to go ahead and address this situation with 3 bullet points and give bands tools and some insights on how to work through these issues! This podcast was actually a YouTube Video that I decided to make a podcast and I thought it turned out really well!If you want to see my face more I would definitely check out my Youtube channel for my videos all about helping your band grow! Also, check out my IG for daily tips on how to grow your band.Thanks!-Steven
Had that opportunity to sit down with Tucson Arizona band Decrown The Heir.I love doing these band interviews because it shows you first hand what up and coming bands are doing that are killing it right now in their scene. These guys are definitely killing it.Definitely pay attention to this band. They are still a newer band but in my eyes, they are doing everything right!Their music is also really freaking good hahaAt the end of this episode, you will be able to hear their newest single "Perish". Also, stream it everywhere and follow this band and watch how they take over this scene.I'm a huge fan already and I had a blast with this episode!Learn something, everyone!
How many of you are bummed RIGHT NOW because you haven't "Made It" yet? Many of us get stuck on the overnight success that actually doesn't exist. What we don't realize when we goto a show and we fantasize of being on that stage. Is that it's not an easy road.At all. It's literally all about the Long Game and how you push through all of the obstacles that are in your way. The stuff that you actually push through actually makes you stronger than ever. You will actually learn to love the game and look forward to the game.In this podcast, I go in depth on the "Long Game" and give you pointers and things that I feel like every touring musician should have.Find the podcast on all streaming platforms or the link in my bio.Enjoy the podcast, everyone!
Brandon Kellum messaged me the other day asking to jump on the podcast to tell everyone his step by step method of how he properly releases an album.I said DUH.This is the exact method that Brandon has used for American Standards and what he has been crafting and testing for a while now and he tells us EVERYTHING!Literally, step by step.If you are releasing music right now or have plans for releasing musicYouHaveToListen ToThis.By far one of the most details lists I have seen on this subject so far.If you want to see our notes and download the guide and see all of the rad videos and stuff we talk about on the podcast head over to www.virgilssoundden.com/ep24
The idea of making music is awesome! Actually doing it is another thing. The drive it takes to be in a band and actually takes it somewhere is very hard to find...Now doing it ALLLLL by your self is even more unheard of!My good buddy Zach of Crowsgold And The Old Souls did that exact thing!I was a huge part of his record and I am insanely stoked to talk about it and encourage you guys to keep working towards your goals! Even if you don't have members to play in your band doesn't mean you can't make music! Be encourage by this episode and enjoy the new single Half Rat that he is releasing only on the podcast until the 17th! The preserve link for Half Rat in his bio!
Adding value in someone's life is probably one of the MOST POWERFUL tools you can use to build your fanbase! The reason is that you just aren't word vomiting this pitch on how they "should totally buy a shirt and totally follow us on Facebook"...that you probably just told the last 10 people. If you connect with your audience and actually give them something to chew on then and just then they will remember you for the rest of their life andddd probably buy something and or tell everyone they know about you!"but we are a band...how the HELL do we do that?" I'm glad you asked! (...cheesy sales guy voice...)Tune into this weeks Virgil's Sound Den Podcast (Found on all streaming platforms) where I take on Episode 22 on completely by myself! I jammed this episode full of an insane amount of info and I hope it encourages you to take a leap in the right direction and start adding value and get you that much closer to your end goal!!!#keepkillingit

Also, very stoked to have my first full band on the podcast - Came To Conquer! These dudes are killing it right now both with how they are writing and how they are hustling to make their (very humbling) goals for the band come true! They truly love the deathcore scene and it was awesome talking to them. I had the privilege of mixing and mastering their single “Bad Habits” and they wanted to release it on the podcast for everyone to hear before its released on all streaming platforms!!! Make sure to pre-save “Bad Habits” and you will get notified when it’s released! Here is the link https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/cametoconquer/bad-habits

Collaborations can be code for "I want free work" or "I don't know what I'm doing, you do it." But when it comes down to it, working with someone else on a project can be a perfectly, scum-free way to create solid content and reach a bigger audience. In this episode John McLucas and I get into why adding collaborations to your band's growth strategy is a great way to grow your fan base. He's a Cali based producer and mixing engineer with a true passion to help musicians grow.
