Making a Scene Presents - The Revenue Stack: How Indie Musicians Build Music Career One Layer at a Time There was a time when the music business sold artists a very simple dream. Get discovered. Get signed. Get played on the radio. Get into the stores. Get on the charts. Then, if the machine liked you enough, maybe you could build a career. That system was never as fair as people pretend it was, but at least everyone understood the path. The gatekeepers owned the doors, and the artist stood outside hoping someone would let them in. http://www.makingascene.org

In this entertaining episode of The Neil Haley Show and Celebrity Interviews Live from the Grotto, Neil Haley sits down with musician, actor, writer, and filmmaker Hobart to discuss his upcoming comedy feature film I Am Ryan. The conversation explores Hobart's fascinating journey through the entertainment industry, from performing in bands and touring internationally to acting in national commercials and eventually creating his own feature film inspired by years of being compared to Hollywood superstar Ryan Reynolds.Growing up in central Illinois surrounded by farmland and small-town life, Hobart always dreamed of building a career in music. In 2012, he made the bold decision to move to Los Angeles and pursue those ambitions full-time. Like many artists who relocate to Hollywood, he quickly discovered that success often requires adaptability, persistence, and a willingness to explore opportunities beyond the original plan. While music remained his primary focus, Hobart soon found himself auditioning for commercials during downtime between musical projects. What started as an experiment quickly became a successful second career. Over the years, he landed campaigns with major brands including Walmart, Microsoft, ZipRecruiter, and numerous others. These experiences helped him become comfortable in front of the camera while providing valuable insight into the entertainment industry.Throughout the interview, Hobart reflects on his extensive music career. He shares stories about performing on the iconic Vans Warped Tour, touring across the United States and internationally, and playing more than a thousand live performances throughout his career. His music has also been featured in major media projects including Deadpool: The Video Game, Rock Band, MTV productions, ESPN broadcasts, and additional television and gaming properties. These accomplishments established Hobart as a versatile creative talent long before he stepped into filmmaking. The centerpiece of the discussion is Hobart's new comedy feature, I Am Ryan. The film is inspired by a unique reality that Hobart has experienced for years: people constantly telling him that he looks like Ryan Reynolds. Friends, strangers, casting directors, and entertainment professionals have repeatedly pointed out the resemblance. Instead of ignoring the comparisons, Hobart decided to turn them into a comedic concept. The story follows Brian Reynolds, an ordinary man who happens to look remarkably similar to Ryan Reynolds. After being discovered by a questionable manager looking to capitalize on the resemblance, Brian suddenly finds himself navigating bizarre situations, questionable promotional appearances, and opportunities that blur the line between reality and mistaken identity. The result is a comedy that combines satire, celebrity culture, and absurd humor while exploring the unexpected consequences of looking like one of Hollywood's biggest stars.Hobart explains that the original idea for I Am Ryan first came to him in 2017. Although he loved the concept immediately, bringing it to life required years of planning, development, networking, and persistence. Eventually, he connected with producer Carl Jackson, who immediately recognized the potential of the project. Together they assembled the team necessary to move the film into production, ultimately filming the movie in 2025.Neil and Hobart spend considerable time discussing the realities of independent filmmaking. Unlike major studio productions with massive budgets and resources, independent films require creators to wear multiple hats. Hobart not only stars in the film but also wrote, produced, and helped oversee many aspects of the project. He shares how challenging—but rewarding—it was to transform a simple idea into a completed feature film.
Today, we're excited to bring you a unique and powerful story from our Tupelo, Mississippi community. Sara and Chris Ekiss share their individual faith journeys, how the Lord brought them together, and the ways He deepened their faith early in their marriage. When Chris sensed God calling him away from being the lead singer of a secular band and into ministry, their lives took an unexpected turn, one that required trust, surrender, and a deep reliance on God's provision. This is a story about making your faith your own, moving beyond the foundation of family and discovering a personal, vibrant relationship with the Lord. It's also a story of learning to trust God's guidance, His timing, and His faithfulness as He leads us exactly where we're meant to be. VERSE OF THE WEEK: "May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us - yes, establish the work of our hands." Psalm 90:17 CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK: In what ways have your faith and prayer life become your own over the years? Praise God for the ways in which He has pursued your heart and established the work of your hands. _________________________________________________________ Listen to a similar story: Episode 309- Katie & JT Thornbury: "Seek and You Will Find: A Marriage and Salvation Story" Download a phone background of the weekly verse HERE! In response to a recent video I saw online, I wanted to address the current state of the desperate need for likes follows and statistics online through social media, and share my thoughts along with some support for artists who are feeling drained by how this is all playing out. Social media stats have become the metric upon which radio stations, labels, venues and distributors measure your music's value and how well your artistry resonates with audiences. It's one thing to have a streamlined social media strategy, but if it's draining you, if it feels inauthentic, if it is taking away from your joy of music, we have to address it.As musicians we have to see this for what it is. As followers you have to support your favourite artists in as many ways as possible. Build your email list, connect with genuine authenticity and know you are not alone if you are drained by following trends and being told you need to post more for your music.
If you want to build a successful career in music, this is not the 1990s, nor is it even the 2010s, when the path was much different. A few things never go out of style, such as practicing well and networking, but nearly everything else is different from when I began my journey nearly 30 years ago. My definition of a successful career is modest: I've been able to pay all of my bills and have enough money left over for moderate enjoyment without doing even a single job that didn't involve my music studies over the past 26 years. There's so much different now, and this requires new tactics to succeed. Musicianship Mastery is formerly known as The Musician Toolkit. Send us Fan MailHe didn't grow up with a band room, a stack of records, or a family cheering him on. Willie Steele grew up hearing “get a job,” drove lumber trucks, and only started taking guitar lessons at 30. Somehow, that late start turns into a lifelong working career where his name becomes shorthand around Long Island for a guy who can show up, make the music feel good, and tell the kind of gig stories you can't invent. We get into the unglamorous truth behind becoming a real musician: the weddings where you get yelled at for not knowing standards, the moment someone asks for a C major seven and you realize you have gaps, and the saving power of the right mentor. Willie gives huge credit to teacher Billy Bauer for unlocking harmony and a deeper system beyond blues licks, and we talk about what practice actually looks like when you're serious. If you care about adult music education, improvisation, and the working guitarist life, this conversation is packed with hard-earned perspective. Then it goes where musicians love to go: feel and groove. Willie breaks down why great players can “hear what's coming” and lock in fast, why some bands fall apart the second the groove returns after a flashy solo, and how he protects the pocket on real gigs. We also talk about money versus joy, the club date world, flipping songs on purpose, and why integrity sometimes means turning down the shiny offer. Subscribe to On Drums, share this with a musician who needs it, and leave a review if the stories hit home. What's one rule you've learned the hard way from gigging?Support the show
Send in your music story!A band can lose two core members and still keep moving, but the reason matters. Godsmack's touring fatigue headline opens the door to a bigger conversation about burnout in hard rock and metal, what the road actually demands, and why “push through it” culture breaks people. We take that news and connect it to the real economics of music today: streaming pressure, constant content, and the hidden costs artists absorb just to stay visible. Sean Martin from The Quarantined joins us and goes deep on the independent artist playbook. We talk Spotify strategy and why monthly listeners are leverage, not just pennies. We get into merch, influencer marketing, playlisting, and why the most important member of your “band” might be your lawyer. Then we zoom out to the vinyl resurgence and why labels are leaning back into full album releases as vinyl records become a premium, profitable product again. If you're building an audience, planning a release, or trying to understand music industry trends, this one is packed with usable insight. The heaviest part of the conversation is also the most important. Sean shares what PTSD really is: a permanent change to the nervous system, not a punchline and not just fear. He explains what helped him climb out, why therapy and expert support matter, and how metacognition can turn survival into progress. We wrap with our song of the week “Molly” by Sponge, then blow off steam with a three-second “guess the song” game that turns into laughs, nostalgia, and a little friendly chaos. If this hit home, subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. Send us Fan MailA lot of artists talk big. DapaDon shows up talking big and then backs it up with real stories, real process, and real scars from doing it the hard way. We sit down with the Brooklyn rapper singer engineer who now calls Charlotte home, and we get into what it takes to build a versatile independent music career without getting trapped in local politics or pay-to-play nonsense. If you care about the Charlotte music scene, artist development, touring strategy, or how to move like a pro when nobody is handing you a budget, you'll get something out of this one.We talk touring Africa and why Ghana felt different when the crowd already knew the music, plus the practical side nobody glamorizes like travel shots, logistics, and tightening a set. Then we go straight at the business: why some promoters pack 30 to 40 artists on one bill, why that hurts everyone, and what real curation should look like for showcases, venues, and podcasts. Dap also breaks down how songs come together quickly when chemistry is right, and why protecting your “bag” sometimes means saying no.After that, the Bounce Breakdown gets wild and honest: Charlotte road rage and distracted drivers, a disturbing influencer death story overseas that raises major questions, the rising cost of raising kids in the US, and the always messy debate around age gap relationships and double standards. We close with a deeper “therapy” conversation on emotional accountability, emotional intelligence, triggers, and how to communicate without turning every conflict into war.Subscribe for more unfiltered culture talk, share this with a friend who needs it, and leave a review if you want us to keep bringing guests like this. Mixing Music with Dee Kei | Audio Production, Technical Tips, & Mindset
In Episode 370 of the Mixing Music Podcast, Dee Kei and Lu continue their true-or-false format and dig into even more of the beliefs, myths, and gray areas that shape music production and audio careers. This round covers everything from whether you should mix and master your own music, to whether analog gear is really better, whether Pro Tools still matters, and whether networking outweighs skill. They also get into social media, working for free early in your career, standing out in a crowded industry, perfectionism, arrangement vs mix importance, and what actually makes a great mixer. One of the strongest themes in the episode is that audio is never just technical. Great mixing is also about psychology, emotion, decision-making, and understanding how to help artists feel confident in what they are making. This is a sharp, practical episode for engineers, producers, and artists who want more nuance than the usual black-and-white advice. Pre–Animal Kingdom, Disney World threw a bunch of real animals on an island and visitors floated over for a sleepy half-day experience. Poducer | The Podcast for Producers On this episode of Poducer, Jerry sits down with Neumonic, Northern Road, and Kiefer Ian for a conversation about the realities of building a career in electronic music. The discussion moves from early influences and first concerts into the path from DJing to producing, and how artists eventually find the sound that feels like their own. Neumonic talks about landing in the UK garage lane after years of DJing across genres, and how committing to that direction helped everything start to click. The group also dives into the modern production landscape, including the rise of sample packs, the temptation of drag-and-drop workflows, and why developing a real sound still takes intention and practice. They also get into the process of improving as a producer. Neumonic shares lessons from Justin Jay's production bootcamp, the mindset of finishing songs instead of stacking loops, and how mentorship and creative constraints can help break through creative blocks. Toward the end, the conversation shifts to the business side of music. From touring burnout to the real economics behind show fees and promotion, the episode offers an honest look at what it takes to keep building a sustainable project while still keeping the joy of making music alive.
