Self-released through his new label, Seyerland Records, Boylife marks a new chapter—one where Seyer deepens his artistry while uplifting fellow independent musicians.Ari and Michael dive into the making of Boylife, collaborating with a young producer, shooting music videos guerrilla-style in Japan, and staying fully independent—from DIY vinyl runs to self-funded tours. Sonny Von Cleveland: Vocalizing Our Pain to Heal | The Hopeaholics Podcast Sonny Von Cleveland—a man who turned a life marked by profound trauma into a beacon of hope and redemption. From a childhood scarred by molestation beginning at age three, a felony charge at seven, and a harrowing prison sentence at 16, Sonny's story is one of survival against unimaginable odds. He opens up about enduring a violent prison environment, including a brutal assault in his first week, and how he adopted a gang mentality to survive, only to face a pivotal moment in solitary confinement in 2004 after a drug-fueled crime spree landed him back behind bars. A mentor's persistent question—“Why are you so angry?”—sparked a 19-month transformation, teaching Sonny emotional intelligence, forgiveness, and the power of vocalizing pain through writing forgiveness letters and reading Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl. Emerging from prison in 2016 at age 35, Sonny built a music career, signed with Ferocious Records, and later pivoted to YouTube success, only to face new challenges, including betrayal and the loss of his channel. Now married to a woman he met through a podcast, Sonny runs Frisky Business, the only cat café in the Coachella Valley, and the Von Cleveland Foundation, while speaking at schools and juvenile halls to break cycles of abuse. He shares his upcoming 22-city U.S. tour, “Conversations of Redemption,” starting July 1, where he'll explore city traumas and invite people to share their stories, partnered with Operation Light Shine to combat child sex abuse material. The central theme of this podcast episode revolves around the profound influence of familial inspiration on one's artistic journey, as exemplified by the speaker's desire to emulate her mother. The speaker reflects on her early experiences in kindergarten, where a nascent interest in performance ignited a lifelong passion. She recounts her formative years, characterized by a yearning to mirror her mother's artistic endeavors, which ultimately shaped her aspirations. Throughout the discourse, we explore the complexities of self-expression, the challenges of peer perception, and the significant role of encouragement from loved ones in fostering creativity. This conversation encapsulates the intricate interplay between personal history and artistic development, illustrating how one individual's journey can resonate universally.Takeaways: The initial inspiration for pursuing a career in the arts stemmed from a profound admiration for one's mother, who served as a role model throughout formative years. Experiences in school often involved being both celebrated for musical talents and subsequently criticized, which led to complex social dynamics with peers. The journey into music composition began unexpectedly, highlighting that creativity can emerge from the most mundane activities, such as cleaning the house. Art school provided a unique environment filled with like-minded individuals, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among aspiring artists and performers. Learning the importance of understanding personal strengths and weaknesses was emphasized during education, shaping future collaborations and artistic endeavors. Despite a passion for music, formal instruction did not encompass songwriting, prompting a self-directed exploration of musical creation later in life. In this episode, Lisa and Melissa discuss:The misconceptions and realities of pursuing a music careerThe value and limitations of majoring in music at collegeHow parents can support teens responsibly pursuing creative pathsBuilding sustainable and financially secure careers in the artsKey Takeaways: Majoring in music is often unnecessary, and sometimes unhelpful, for students pursuing contemporary music careers, who instead benefit more from learning entrepreneurial skills like music production, video editing, and social media marketing. Many successful musicians build income through diverse streams like collaboration, licensing, freelance production, and music business work, not just from their music.Early hands-on experience in music production, collaboration, and entrepreneurship helps students determine whether a professional music career is right for them before committing to a college major or expensive program.A helpful question to guide college decisions is: "What are you hiring a college to do for you?" Focusing on outcomes like networking or skill-building rather than simply pursuing prestige.“You do not need a piece of paper, or an institution, or anyone's permission to become great at your craft. Become an entrepreneur and launch yourself.” – Melissa MulliganAbout Melissa Mulligan: Melissa Mulligan is a renowned vocal and music career coach who has guided platinum-selling, award-winning, and touring artists, including Jack from AJR, Chelsea Cutler, Jeremy Zucker, and Aria Lisslo, the 2024 John Lennon Songwriter Award winner. YouTube SpotifyBioSanitatem is a Latin word meaning “soundness of mind.”Saint Tatum is a Canadian rapper making sounds for your mind. The connection? Saint Tatum, born Benjamin Michael Scott, borrowed from the Latin for hisartist name, inspired by the healing positivity of the ancient term.At 16 years old, and having just released his first mixtape, Are You Awake Yet, he hasn't hadmuch time to build a music career. But Saint Tatum is already making his mark. His new work isgaining an international audience, making it clear that the sky's the limit for the young artist. Are You Awake is made up of six tracks that explore emotion and atmosphere. He creates in hisgarage studio using a Mac and the online digital audio workstation BandLab. While he likes theDAW's interface and effects, he has also found collaborators through the platform's interactivefeatures.Saint Tatum's approach to lyrics puts emotion before storytelling. “I really resonate off offeeling,” he says. In practice, this means a layered approach to sound, contrasting positive andnegative voices and energies. While some lyrics are pre-written, like for tracks “The Mirage” and “Don't Ask Me Why,” onothers he takes a looser approach. “I just kinda let the bars come to me rather than overthinkingthem,” he says, describing his approach as like painting a picture. On the mixtape, Saint Tatum worked with YouTube beatmakers Auxiliary Beats, Vinnyx.Prod,2Facest, Yakinata, Goth Helma, and James J.The EP's title, Are You Awake Yet, comes from a personal place of self-determination — andself-discovery. “I was going through a point in my life where I was… doing a bunch of not greatthings,” he says. By making a conscious decision to move away from negativity and pride, hewas able to break out of a cycle: “I realized staying the same was wasting my time, and changewas the only way forward.”This personal journey is what makes Are You Awake Yet so compelling. Even when Tatum'svoice is buried under layers of reverb or melted into a dreamy beat, tracks like “Love It LikeThat” pulse with vulnerability. If his music sounds like mumble rap, it's because he wants it to —or, as he puts it, “mumble trap.” Artists like Lil Skies, Lil Xan, and Rae Sremmurd were majorinfluences. But Saint Tatum is not copying. He's channeling.“I love making people feel the same way I did when I heard some of my favorite artists,” hesays. “That changed my life. I want to give that back.”Saint Tatum is completely independent — no label, no manager, no PR team — and he isalready thinking big. He's got an eye on the long game, and a clear sense of who he is as anartist. “Even if nobody listens, I'll still be making music. Living without being who I truly am wouldtake everything away from me.”For now, his focus is on connecting with listeners all over the world. Fans far and wide areresponding to the positive and healing sounds in the musical paintings of Saint Tatum. With a new mixtape ready to drop in the coming weeks, interested listeners should follow SaintTatum today. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I talk again with my musical brother, the amazing Tim Hamilton. Tim's had such a rich and fascinating career that we absolutely needed to talk again. If you haven't heard the first interview with him, I encourage you to go back and listen. In this follow-up, Tim shares what life's been like recently, including the highs and challenges of a packed summer gig schedule. We dig into the evolution of country music, especially the return of more traditional sounds in the '90s, and Tim reflects on how crucial it is for a musician to have a signature sound. We also talk about his time playing in the house band at Cowboys in Kennesaw, Georgia—some great stories there—along with the memorable artists he worked with and the curveballs that come with live shows. From starstruck moments to behind-the-scenes stories about the camaraderie among musicians, Tim brings warmth, wisdom, and a lot of heart. We also reflect on the lessons we've learned from seasoned players, the changes in the Nashville scene, and just how much community and connection shape our lives in music.I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed catching up with Tim. This one's packed with stories, insights, and plenty of laughs.Thank you for listening!
