EP 147: Despair Is Not a Strategy: Emerge America CEO A'shanti Gholar on Servant Leadership and the Long Game

The Unburdened Leader

If it feels like you've lived a year inside of a month right now, you're not alone. The cycle of our times is relentless and demands more of our attention and emotional capacity than we were ever meant to carry. This disorientation makes us more prone to disengagement, burnout, cynicism, and the lure of certainty. We also risk what social psychologists call moral narrowing, where our moral attention and empathy constrict to a smaller set of people or issues—often those we identify with directly—while excluding or devaluing others outside that circle. We can become more rigid, less able to tolerate complexity, and more likely to simplify moral dilemmas into “us versus them.” Even the most caring people are susceptible to moral narrowing when they're constantly overwhelmed. But we can build skills that help us move through grief, tolerate uncertainty, and stay engaged without losing ourselves. We need to train for these times, not just intellectually, but relationally and somatically. We need to be able to stay in the room long enough to build lasting connections and coalitions. My guest today models what it looks like to think and lead with the long game in mind while also tending to present-day relationships and her own well-being. She reminds us that despair is not a strategy and that steady, relational, local action is how we keep the future from being decided by the loudest and most reckless forces in the room.A'shanti F. Gholar is the President & CEO of Emerge, the nation's largest network of women elected officials and candidates. A'shanti co-founded Emerge Nevada in 2006, was named Emerge's national policy director in 2016, and became the first Black woman to lead Emerge in February 2020. With affiliates in over two dozen states, more than 1,200 alums in office, and over 6,500 Democratic women trained to run for office and win, Emerge has become a force to be reckoned with in the political landscape. She is also the founder of The Brown Girls Guide to Politics and its award-winning podcast, which The Guardian recognized as a “practical guide to progressive activism.” Listen to the full episode to hear:How A'shanti learned early on the power of getting involved at the local levelHow Emerge helps women recognize the value of their skills and lived experiences in holding political positionsHow centering the “why” helps Emerge candidates get elected, fight through the hard days, and get re-elected at high ratesWhy servant leadership is at the core of how Emerge trains candidates to leadHow every day micro engagements in your community add up to make a difference and keep hope alive for the long haulWhy representation, visibility, and mentorship are vital to changing the narrative of who can run for and hold officeLearn more about A'shanti Gholar:EmergeThe Brown Girls Guide to Politics PodcastInstagram: @ashantigholarLearn more about Rebecca:rebeccaching.comWork With RebeccaThe Unburdened Leader on SubstackSign up for the weekly Unburdened Leader EmailResources:Fired Up: How to Turn Your Spark into a Flame and Come Alive at Any Age, Shannon WattsNot My Type: One Woman vs. a President, E. This week on Power House, Zeb Lowe sits down with Anthony Casa, President and CEO of UMortgage, for a candid conversation about what actually drives long-term success in the mortgage business. Anthony reflects on his decades in the industry, sharing why mentorship remains one of the most critical (and most overlooked) factors for loan originators. He explains how building early relationships with real estate agents compounds over time, why consistency matters more than short-term wins, and how earning trust is still the foundation of every successful career. The conversation also takes a personal turn as Anthony opens up about his own transformation, including sobriety and renewed focus on health and wellness, and how those changes reshaped his leadership style. He connects personal discipline to professional performance, arguing that sustainable success in mortgage lending starts with how leaders take care of themselves. Anthony and Zeb also dig into the industry's structural shift from retail to broker channels, discussing why compensation, flexibility, and culture are driving that movement—and how marketing strategies must evolve to support it. This episode is a grounded look at mentorship, leadership, and why the long game still matters in mortgage. Here's a glimpse of what you'll learn: Why mentorship is essential for new loan officers How early agent relationships compound into long-term success What Anthony's personal transformation taught him about leadership Why health and wellness matter in high-pressure careers How the broker channel is reshaping mortgage competition Why culture and autonomy attract top talent How marketing strategies should match individual sales goals Why consistency beats intensity over time How to succeed in today's market conditions Why earning trust still matters more than tactics The Power House podcast brings the biggest names in housing to answer hard-hitting questions about industry trends, operational and growth strategy, and leadership. PR isn't a “nice to have” in franchising, it's a credibility engine.Today we are chatting with Sherri Fishman, founder of Fishman Public Relations, for a conversation about how public relations has shaped franchise growth for more than three decades and why its impact is even more critical today.Sherri takes us back to 1991, when she launched her firm after years working in franchise public relations, a path that would go on to shape how franchise brands tell their stories. Since then, she's worked alongside emerging concepts and some of the most recognized franchise brands in the country, served in multiple leadership roles within the International Franchise Association, and, in 2023, was honored with the prestigious Bonnie Levine Award for her mentorship, leadership, and lasting impact on franchising. Throughout our conversation, she shares hard-earned lessons on leadership, risk, earned media, and why empathy has always been central to her approach. We also dig into how PR has evolved from traditional media pitching to a more integrated mix of earned media, content, social visibility, and local storytelling. Sherri explains why franchisees are often a brand's strongest ambassadors, how local PR programs like grand openings and community engagement fuel both unit-level success and franchise development, and why leaders who treat PR as a short-term tactic often miss its real value. So whether you're launching a franchise, supporting franchisees in local markets, or rethinking how your brand builds trust at scale, this episode offers real insight into how PR actually works inside franchising. Breeding season is underway on the ranch, and this year our breeding decisions look a little different than they have in the past. In this episode, I'm sharing what's happening right now at Dry Creek and walking you through how we're thinking about herd genetics, maternal traits, and long-term direction—not from a textbook perspective, but from real-world experience. I talk through why we sold our longtime Boer buck, how that decision reshaped this year's breeding plan, and why we're intentionally slowing down instead of rushing to replace him. We dig into how past experience with show goats changed the way I think about first kiddings, mothering ability, and how breeding decisions can either set does up for success—or make their job harder from the start. You'll hear how and why we're using Spanish bucks across the Boer herd this year, what we're watching for in the resulting kids, and how data collection—not trends or pressure—is guiding our next steps. I also share some of the longer-term options we're considering, including terminal crossing, maintaining two distinct herds, and what market demand may influence moving forward. This episode isn't about having the perfect breeding plan. It's about making thoughtful decisions that keep options open, protect herd function, and align with the season of ranching and life you're actually in. If you're raising goats, planning future breeding decisions, or trying to balance improvement with practicality, this episode will help you think more clearly and move forward with confidence—even if you don't have every answer yet. In This Episode, I Cover: A quick ranch update and what winter conditions mean for daily management Why we sold our Boer buck and how genetic concentration affects breeding decisions How past show goat experience reshaped our approach to first kidding does Using Spanish bucks to improve mothering and functional traits The pros and tradeoffs of slowing genetic progress for long-term herd success What a terminal cross is and why we're considering it How market demand, data, and personal goals influence herd direction Key Takeaways: Breeding decisions should support function, not just appearance or speed A doe's first kidding experience is important for long-term doe success Slowing down can preserve options and prevent genetic dead ends Data collection beats trend-chasing every time It's okay to move forward without having every future decision locked in Related Episodes: 22 | What Is the Perfect Meat Goat? Together, we talk about: - Why the message of God’s love is surging globally—and why it’s setting people free - Healing religious trauma rooted in “distance,” fear, and performance - Union with Christ (not striving) as the foundation for identity in Christ and spiritual healing - Obedience as a gift that matures us into love (not a fear-based scoreboard) - The difference between boundaries that heal vs. control that crushes - How Papa/Jesus/Holy Spirit leads you in peace, intimacy, and real freedom Connect with Jason Clark Website: AFamilyStory.org Community: Rethinking God with Tacos (Facebook) Podcast: “Rethinking God with Tacos”, most major platforms YouTube: @Rethinking God with Tacos “Rethinking God with Tacos BOOK” available on Amazon If this blessed you: • Subscribe for more conversations on God’s love, identity in Christ, and inner healing • Share this with a friend who needs hope today • Explore Catherine’s resources & community for next-step support Exhausted and worn out? What do world-class athletes actually eat — not in theory, not on Instagram, but in real life, day after day? After more than 100 conversations with elite climbers, ultrarunners, surfers, and endurance athletes, I started noticing a pattern I didn't expect. It wasn't about optimization. It wasn't about trends. And it definitely wasn't about eating something new every day.It started with breakfast. On nearly every episode of Ageless Athlete, I ask a simple question:“Where are you right now — and what did you have for breakfast?”Over time, a clear through-line emerged across sports, ages, and disciplines: the athletes who last tend to build simple, repeatable defaults, especially around food. This isn't a nutrition lecture. I'm not a scientist. And this isn't about macros or perfection. It's a human, experience-based conversation about how consistency, environment, and intention durably shape performance — especially as we age.In this episode, we explore:Why many elite athletes eat the same breakfast most daysWhat breakfast reveals about routine, discipline, and decision fatigueWhy consistency often matters more than noveltyHow environment matters more than willpower when it comes to eating wellWhat I had to relearn about protein, micronutrients, and recoveryHow my own diet evolved from gym culture to outdoor sports to a mostly plant-forward approachReferenced conversationsLionel Conacher — big-wave surfer, first surfed Mavericks at 59Jerry Moffatt — one of the most influential climbers in historyLynn Hill — first to free climb The Nose on El CapitanSteve McClure — elite climber still performing into his 50sHarvey Lewis — one of the most accomplished ultrarunners aliveGary Linden — big-wave surf pioneer with six decades in the ocean, now surfing in his 70sKitty Calhoun — legendary alpinist climbing strongly into her 60sAlso referenced: my conversation with EC Synkowski on practical, evidence-based nutrition for active people.Key takeaway: The nutrition that lasts isn't exciting. It's repeatable.---

Hayes Carll joins Wheels Off for a wide-ranging, deeply reflective conversation about songwriting as a lifelong practice rather than a race. Speaking candidly about his early obsessiveness, creative doubt, and eventual comfort in his own voice, Carll traces the evolution of his process—from locking himself in a room chasing melodies to learning how to trust silence and timing. The conversation explores how Carll writes songs today, why collaboration has become central to his creative life, and how working across different mediums has sharpened his instincts as a songwriter. He discusses the freedom that comes from not playing it safe, and the idea that creativity is not about speed or output, but about staying curious, present, and willing to be vulnerable. Maduro captured.I marvel at how methodical President Trump has been in dismantling the evil Democrats, and how he has Republicans winning the short game, while positioning the long game. And I will tie all this to what's happening with Venezuela and Maduro in this broadcast. The best example is how he stopped illegal immigration. You've heard me talk about this, but it bears repeating. Trump did what Democrats knew could be done, but pretended could be done. He closed the border. Consider the optics of this. While Democrats encouraged millions to invade America, and gave all kinds of excuses for doing so, Trump just stopped it. In its tracks. That's the short game.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
